Mup takes a text file as input and produces PostScript output for printed music. Mup can handle both regular notation and tablature notation. (It can also produce MIDI output.)
Main features:
- Up to 40 staffs, which can include 1-line, 5-line, and tablature staffs. Output can be restricted to any subset of the staffs. Different staffs can be different sizes.
- Up to 3 independent voices per staff, up to 70 simultaneous notes per voice.
- Double whole to 256th notes, with any number of dots. Tuplets.
- Note styles of normal, grace, cue, X, diamond, plus shaped notes. Optional parentheses around notes and/or accidentals.
- Cross-staff stems.
- Time signatures of cut, common, or numerators from 1 to 99 and denominators from 1 to 64. Complicated time signatures, including numerators with two or more numbers added together, or two or more fractions added together, or alternating time signatures.
- All standard clefs, including treble, treble8, 8treble, French violin, soprano, mezzosoprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass, as well as the drum (neutral) clef. Clefs can be changed in the middle of measures.
- Barline styles of single, double, dashed, dotted, end, repeats, or none.
- 8th note and shorter notes can have either flags or beams; beams can be cross-staff.
- Guitar grids
- Lyrics can be placed above, below, or between staffs. Unlimited number of verses, with control of font and size.
- Headers and footers.
- Staffs can be grouped with braces or brackets.
- Automatic transposition of music and chord marks per staff.
- First and subsequent endings.
- Optional rehearsal marks and/or automatic measure numbering. Rehearsal marks can be boxed, circled, or plain.
- Crescendo/decrescendo marks.
- Rolls, ornaments, fermatas, accents.
- Measure repeats.
- Ties, slurs, phrase marks, octave marks, piano pedal marks, etc. Ties, slurs, and phrase marks can be solid, dotted, or dashed.
- Suport for figured bass, analysis, and chords.
- Optional MIDI file output. (Very useful for "proof-listening" to your songs to check for input mistakes!)
- PostScript output for printing on any PostScript compatible output device. Can be used with Ghostscript.
- All standard PostScript fonts supported, in 1 to 100 point size, including most common non-English characters.
- Input is a text file, for easy portability between computer systems.
- Macros and include files.
- General if clauses that can be used to generate different outputs based on values of parameters.
- Mup will determine how to lay out the music, but there are numerous user controls available to fine-tune the output to meet your specific needs.
- Comprehensive Users Guide provided in both PostScript and HTML formats, including many examples.
- Mup is available via ftp to try out for free. If you like it and want to keep it, the shareware registration is far lower than the cost of most music publication software.
Enhancements:
- This version adds new features requested by users, including support for user-defined symbols, several new parameters affecting layout and how accidentals are used, a new way to force alignment, an HTML index, and various other enhancements.

Corel PHOTO-PAINT is an application with a long history and one that I have used off and on for as many years. This latest Version 9 is not all that different in outward appearance and the included feature set than the previous Version 8, or even 7 for that matter.

However, using this new Version 9 was a much better experience because of what I can best describe as refinement. Before getting into how Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 performed, let me first describe what the package contains and generally what it is designed to do. The name PHOTO-PAINT is about as broadly descriptive as you can get for such an image-editing product.

It has the tools, processes, and brushes that computer artists need for painting and digital photographers require to acquire images from scanners and digital cameras, color correct, manipulate, and incorporate in a publishable document containing not just photographic images, but graphic design elements and standard text and manipulated type fonts.

In addition to the main paint and image-editing application, Corel also includes Bitstream Font Navigator 3.0 to organize, view, and select fonts stored in your operating system. Canto Cumulus 4.0 is an acclaimed professional digital asset management application; Adobe Acrobat Reader for access to documentation in Acrobat .PDF format on disc; DigiMarc Digital Watermarking to record your copyright within images; Human Software Squizz an image morphing utility; Corel Capture 9 to record and save screenshots; and Corel Script Editor to automate processes.

The features within Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 are more extensive than just about any image editor consumer software product currently available. They include in part:

• Artistic media brushes that may be used directly and as cloning brushes to paint or repaint using all kinds of natural painting effects as well as more imaginative options.

• Layered object effects can be created to manipulate, composite, as well as add graphic elements like type with drop shadows over a photographic image.

• You can either open or save to a wide variety of graphics file types making resources created in a number of different applications available, as well as creating images in PHOTO-PAINT that can be used in other applications, including Adobe Photo-shop, MetaCreations painter, among others.

Ixla digital camera support is built-in providing easy access to the images stored by most of the popular brands and models of cameras.

• Full support is included for HTML output to create content for web publishing.

• Encapsulated PostScript Export includes enhanced color management to assure high quality printing and output to offset press reproduction.

• Images created in PHOTO-PAINT may be output in PDF format for web or offset printing targets.

• A Wizard is included which makes output to a pre-press service bureau easy.

More extensive and controllable access support of color management is included, incorporating the selection of one of a number of standard color workspaces with ICC profiles which may be imbedded in output files.

• And in Corel tradition the package includes a clip art library of 1200 items, 1500 royalty free photos, 750 floating objects, and 300 TrueType fonts.

downCast converts XML documents valid according to the upCast DTD (and, in fact, any XML document whose DTD can be mapped into the upCast DTD) linked with an external stylesheet to Word and Rich Text Format (RTF) for editing and printing.
Combine it with upCast, and you have a combo that offers a unique, streamlined, roundtrip-capable and integrated XML editing and publishing solution based - among others - on the open standards XML, XLink, XSLT and CSS2.
The conversion process downCast implements tries to use the structuring RTF constructs wherever possible like native tables, character and paragraph styles derived automatically from the stylesheet, native lists, headers, footers, textboxes, footnotes or annotations.
This makes the result very different from a PDF document that places objects at specific positions on a canvas and is not editable by the end user. Instead, downCast makes the resulting document highly accessible for editing without breaking the general layout.
Inserting a list item in a numbered list with automatic renumbering or adding a column in a table is something which cannot easily (if at all) be done in output formats like PDF or XSL-FO by a regular user.
downCast project also supports more advanced features like rendering of OASIS Exchange Table Model tables or fields whose actual contents gets automatically calculated by Word.
Additionally, downCast does not rely on the availability of Word template files for styles or font definitions, which makes it suitable for Word document generation on server platforms other than Windows.
Two-byte encoding and Unicode support is built-in. Encodings for special fonts can be specified in a font property mapping table, as well as you can modify the default stylesheet used for the conversion.
downCast has a built-in slim, but efficient application programming interface (API). You can program against this API and thus include the complete functionality of our downCast Technology into your own applications.
By writing only a few lines of Java code, you gain complete control over the document conversion process the same way as you would using the GUI.
