downCast 1.7.2

downCast 1.7.2

downCast converts XML documents valid according to the upCast DTD. more>>
downCast converts XML documents valid according to the upCast DTD (and, in fact, any XML document whose DTD can be mapped into the upCast DTD) linked with an external stylesheet to Word and Rich Text Format (RTF) for editing and printing.
Combine it with upCast, and you have a combo that offers a unique, streamlined, roundtrip-capable and integrated XML editing and publishing solution based - among others - on the open standards XML, XLink, XSLT and CSS2.
The conversion process downCast implements tries to use the structuring RTF constructs wherever possible like native tables, character and paragraph styles derived automatically from the stylesheet, native lists, headers, footers, textboxes, footnotes or annotations.
This makes the result very different from a PDF document that places objects at specific positions on a canvas and is not editable by the end user. Instead, downCast makes the resulting document highly accessible for editing without breaking the general layout.
Inserting a list item in a numbered list with automatic renumbering or adding a column in a table is something which cannot easily (if at all) be done in output formats like PDF or XSL-FO by a regular user.
downCast project also supports more advanced features like rendering of OASIS Exchange Table Model tables or fields whose actual contents gets automatically calculated by Word.
Additionally, downCast does not rely on the availability of Word template files for styles or font definitions, which makes it suitable for Word document generation on server platforms other than Windows.
Two-byte encoding and Unicode support is built-in. Encodings for special fonts can be specified in a font property mapping table, as well as you can modify the default stylesheet used for the conversion.
downCast has a built-in slim, but efficient application programming interface (API). You can program against this API and thus include the complete functionality of our downCast Technology into your own applications.
By writing only a few lines of Java code, you gain complete control over the document conversion process the same way as you would using the GUI.
Version restrictions:
- 30-day evaluation DEMO
- The document text output will contain interspersed random characters.
- The evaluation version only converts one document at a time then quits.

Tribal Trouble is a fast paced realtime strategy game. more>>
Tribal Trouble is a fast paced RTS (real-time strategy) game where you will find yourself pitted against your computer or online players. Your job is to lead your somewhat clueless kinsmen (be it vikings or natives) to new discoveries and victories as the tribal clashes rage across a group of tropical islands.
Once upon a time, a gang of viking raiders got so drunk celebrating their latest successful pillaging trip, that they got lost on the high sea and ended up stranding on a small group of tropical islands. Here they chose to stay for a while, much to the annoyance of the local natives.
While Tribal Trouble is quite simple to grasp, planning successful strategies and utilizing the complex and varying terrain to your advantage, is the real challenge.
Main features:
- A single player mode where you can play against computer controlled opponents of 3 difficulty levels.
- A single player campaign mode.
- A multiplayer mode where you can challenge other players online and enter The League.

NFTP 1.72b4

NFTP 1.72b4

NFTP is a powerful, full-featured FTP client. more>>
NFTP is a text-mode ftp client for (in alphabetical order): BeOS (Intel R4 and up), Digital Unix (Alpha), FreeBSD (Intel), Linux (Intel, SPARC), OS/2, Solaris (SPARC and Intel), Windows 95/NT.

Here `text-mode means that it runs in fullscreen mode or text window -- Command-line session on OS/2, Command Prompt on Windows 95/NT, console or xterm on Unix, Terminal on BeOS.

However, with version 1.50 the quasi-GUI version has appeared for OS/2. It looks much like textmode version, but utilizes native GUI menu, some dialog boxes, can be resized freely etc.

This does not mean of course that textmode version will be abandoned. X11 version (using Xlib) appeared in version 1.51. One of the main design concepts of NFTP is speed and effectiveness of text-mode keyboard interface. Everything can be done without mouse!

To clarify things a little, NFTP is not based on ncftp; neither on user interface nor on source code. The code is written from scratch (I have started the project in 1994, but NFTP was OS/2-only until Feb 1998).

Some ideas might seem to be common but still such ones are floating in the air, every decent FTP client should support things like directory caching and restarting transfers. Furthermore, NFTP user interface is quite different from ncftps. Name "NFTP" comes from somewhat ugly "New FTP client".

Personally, I think NFTP is one of the most advanced FTP clients in the Unix world (although you might disagree with my opinion, of course). Under Windows and OS/2, it stands aside as almost all FTP clients for these systems are GUI-based (unlike NFTP).

While GUI offers prettiness and ease of use for novices, textmode interface gives speed without sacrificing power (including speed of use when you learn key combinations). Besides, textmode interface makes possible the same interface on a variety of systems, including Unix.

VNC Enterprise Edition 4.3.1 (Server)

VNC Enterprise Edition 4.3.1 (Server)

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. more>>
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. The VNC project is remote control software which allows you to view and fully interact with one computer desktop (the "VNC server") using a simple program (the "VNC viewer") on another computer desktop anywhere on the Internet. The two computers dont even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view a Windows Vista desktop at the office on a Linux or Mac computer at home. For ultimate simplicity, there is even a Java viewer, so that any desktop can be controlled remotely from within a browser without having to install software.
VNC is in widespread active use by millions throughout industry, academia and privately. There are several versions to choose from, including a free version and some substantially enhanced commercial versions.
This package contains the following VNC modules:
- vncviewer - The VNC Viewer for X
- vncserver - The VNC Server for X
- vncconfig - Configuration tool for VNC Server.
- vncpasswd - VNC Authentication password tool for VNC Server.
- vnckeygen - Cryptographic key generator for VNC Server.
- vnclicense - License management tool for VNC Server.
- x0vncserver - Polling VNC Server for existing X sessions.
- Xvnc - X VNC Server, used internally by vncserver.
In addition to these standalone programs, on Linux platforms this distribution can also be used to turn a native XFree86 version 4 X server into a VNC server. This is done using a module loaded at run-time, which is normally installed to the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions directory. The module can then be enabled like any other module by adding a SubSection "vnc" block to the Module section of XF86Config. The parameters listed in the Xvnc manual page can be set as options in XF86Config in the "vnc" sub-section of the Module section, e.g. Option "passwordFile" "/root/.vnc/passwd".
In order to run VNC servers you will need a reasonably recent version of the X window system installed. This come as standard with most unix machines. If you dont have it installed, see http://www.xfree86.org or http://www.x.org
VNC Viewer for Java is provided in-built to VNC Server, but newer viewer versions can be used if required by placing the files in a suitable directory, e.g. /usr/local/vnc/classes and setting VNC Servers httpdir parameter. By default, VNC Servers httpdir parameter will default to < inbuilt >.
The default settings used by VNC Server can be modified by editing the system-wide defaults file at /etc/vnc/config, or the users own overrides at %HOME/.vnc/config. This includes both VNC settings e.g. PasswordFile, and X server settings, e.g. geometry. Settings can also be overridden for a specific instance of vncserver only, by providing them on the command-line.
Installing from the tar file:
You should copy the programs to some directory which is in your PATH environment variable, such as /usr/local/bin. You can use the vncinstall script to do this for you:
% ./vncinstall /usr/local/bin
This will also attempt to install the manual pages in an appropriate directory. You can specify an alternative directory as a second argument to vncinstall:
% ./vncinstall /usr/local/bin /usr/local/man
It will also try to install the vnc.so XFree86 version 4 module if appropriate.
Version restrictions:
- A version of the Software is available for a limited trial period as set out in the Website. It will perform for only a limited period of time. THE LIMITED TRIAL SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OR LIABILITY TO YOU WHATSOEVER.
- This software requires a license key

xFunction for Linux 2.16

xFunction for Linux 2.16

JNI proxy for calling native code functions and APIs from Java more>> The xFunction library is the universal solution for integration of Java code with code written in other languages, superior in many aspects to Java Native Interface (JNI). With xFunction, you no longer need to implement those ugly native methods. Instead, you extend and instantiate xFunction classes to create conventional Java objects representing external functions, data structures, pointers, and callbacks. All necessary data conversions and external function calls are done seamlessly by the xFunction library. Java Platform Invoke API Demo (Linux) 2.00.02

Java Platform Invoke API Demo (Linux) 2.00.02

Java Platform Invoke API (Demo version) for Linux, i386 more>> Java Platform Invoke API (Demo version) for Linux/Unix, i386.
Enables Java code to call native functions implemented in shared link libraries like in Microsoft .NET Framework. Written for JSE 1.5.x and later.
Java platform invoke an API that enables Java code to call native functions implemented in shared libraries, such as those in the Linux API. It locates and invokes an exported function and marshals its arguments (integers, strings, arrays, structures, and so on) across the interoperation boundary as needed. This API supports implicit marshaling that makes Java coding with native functions very simple.
To consume a shared library functions you need
1.Identify functions in shared librarys.
Minimally, you must specify the name of the function and name of the the shared library that contains it.
2.Create a class to hold shared library functions.
You can use an existing class, create an individual class for each native function, or create one class that contains a set of related native functions. This class should extend CNativeLibrary. Use the annotation ImportLibrary to bind your class to the native library.
3.Create prototypes in Java code.
Write prototype of a native function as a method with signature that corresponds to the native function using data type map agreement. To identify the native function use the annotation Function. Mark the method with the native modifier.
4.Call a shared library function.
Call the method on your Java class as you would any other Java method. As parameters can be passed structures and implemented in Java callback functions.

PDFlib TET 2.2

PDFlib TET 2.2

PDFlib TET (Text Extraction Toolkit) is software for reliably extracting text information from any PDF file. more>>
PDFlib TET (Text Extraction Toolkit) is software for reliably extracting text information from any PDF file. It is available as a library/component and as a command-line tool. TET makes available the text contents of a PDF as Unicode strings or structured XML, plus detailed glyph and font information. With TET you can retrieve the corresponding Unicode values for text in a PDF document, as well as its position on the page.
In addition to low-level text retrieval TET contains advanced content analysis algorithms for determining word boundaries, removing redundant duplicate text (such as shadows and artificial bold). Using the auxiliary pCOS interface you can retrieve arbitrary objects from the PDF, such as metadata, hypertext, etc.
Fully functional evaluation versions of TET including documentation and samples are available from the TET download page for all supported platforms. Purchasing a license and applying the license key will fully enable the evaluation version for production deployment.
With PDFlib TET you can:
- extract text from PDF, e.g. to store it in a database
- implement a search engine for processing PDF
- convert the text content of PDF pages to XML for processing with other tools
- process PDFs based on their contents
Supported PDF Input
PDFlib TET supports all relevant flavors of PDF input:
- all PDF versions up to PDF 1.7 (Acrobat 8)
- all font and encoding types: base 14 fonts, TrueType, PostScript, OpenType, CID fonts
- encrypted PDF with 40- and 128-bit encryption (appropriate permission settings or password required)
Unicode
Although text in PDF is usually not encoded in Unicode, PDFlib TET will normalize the text from a PDF document to Unicode:
- TET converts all text contents to Unicode. In C the text will be returned in the UTF-8 or UTF-16 formats, and as native Unicode strings in all other language bindings.
- Ligatures and other multi-character glyphs will be decomposed into a sequence of their constituent Unicode characters.
- Vendor-specific Unicode assignments (Private Use Area, PUA) are identified, and mapped to characters in the common Unicode area if possible.
- Glyphs without appropriate Unicode mappings are identified as such, and are mapped to a configurable replacement character.
Full CJK Support
TET includes full support for extracting Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text. All predefined CJK CMaps (encodings) are recognized; horizontal and vertical writing modes are supported.
Content Analysis and Word Identification
TET can be used to retrieve low-level glyph information, but also includes advanced algorithms for content analysis:
- Detect word boundaries to retrieve words instead of characters.
- Recombine the parts of hyphenated words.
- Remove duplicate instances of text, e.g. shadow and artificial bold text.
- Recombine paragraphs into reading order.
- Reorder text which is scattered over the page.
- Reconstruct lines of text.
Geometry
TET provides precise metrics for the text, such as the position on the page, glyph widths, text direction. Specific areas on the page can be excluded or included in the text extraction, e.g. to ignore headers and footers or margins.
Version restrictions:
- Unlicensed versions support all features, but will only process PDF documents with up to 10 pages and 1 MB size. Evaluation versions of TET must not be used for production purposes, but only for evaluating the product. Using TET for production purposes requires a valid TET license.
Enhancements:
- repair mode for damaged PDF repairs damaged documents which were rejected by earlier versions of TET
- support for PDF 1.7, the file format of Acrobat 8
- support for AES-encrypted PDF (appropriate password required)
- TET command-line tool: extract the text based on article threads in the document
- updated pCOS interface (the same pCOS as in PDFlib 7)
- Perl language binding
- many new heuristics and workarounds
- Unicode mappings for more documents
- improvements in the Wordfinder
- various bug fixes
- TET Plugin for Acrobat as a free tool and TET technology demo
