Red Hat Enterprise 4.0
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the next generation enterprise linux operating system. more>>
Red Hat Enterprise Linux supports a wide range hardware and software applications, and is the worlds leading enterprise-focused Linux environment.
The following section outlines a few of the major new features in Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4:
Linux 2.6 kernel infrastructure
Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4 provides the most stable and robust commercial product based on the Linux communitys 2.6.9 kernel. Open source projects such as Fedora provided an environment for the Linux 2.6 kernel to mature significantly during 2004.
As a result, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4 kernel offers numerous improvements over earlier kernels, including many enhanced algorithms and features:
- Generic logical CPU scheduler: Handles multi-core and hyperthreaded CPUs.
- Object-based Reverse Mapping VM: Improved performance in memory constrained systems.
- Read Copy Update: SMP algorithm optimization for operating system data structures.
- Multiple I/O schedulers: Selectable based on the application environment.
- Enhanced SMP & NUMA support: Improved performance and scalability for large servers.
- Network interrupt mitigation (NAPI): Improved performance for heavy network loads.
Improved storage and file system capabilities
Numerous enhancements have been incorporated into Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4 that improve the scalability and performance of the data storage subsystems, including:
- Ext3 performance: Block Reservations and Hash Tree Directories improve the performance of read/write I/O and directory scanning operations.
- Ext3 scalability: Dynamic file system expansion and file system sizes up to 8TB are now supported.
- Logical Volume Management: A comprehensive update to the LVM provides new features such as read/write snapshots and transactional metadata updates, along with a flexible new management GUI. Mirroring and enhanced multipathing are scheduled for delivery by mid 2005.
- Scalability: Enhanced storage LUN management makes it possible to configure much larger storage subsystems.
- Automounting: The inclusion of AutoFSv4 provides sophisticated device access control, supporting features such as browsable mounts and replicated servers.
- Cost reduction: Support for Serial ATA disk storage provides increased performance, higher densities, and reduced cost per megabyte over traditional IDE devices.
New security capabilities
Provision of sophisticated security capabilities has been a specific development focus of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4 release. New features:
- Mandatory Access Control: Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) provides a MAC infrastructure that complements the existing Discretionary Access Control security features provided by the standard Linux environment. In a MAC-based environment, application capabilities and privileges are set by predefined policies and enforced by the kernel. This prevents errant applications from compromising system security.
- Memory management enhancements: Several features, including Exec Shield and Position Independent Executables, combine to prevent applications from being exploited by attacks such as buffer overflows.
- Compile and runtime consistency checking: New buffer validation techniques in the GCC compiler and Glibc library greatly reduce the risk of faulty applications being compromised.
Improved desktop capabilities
Significant emphasis has been placed on providing a feature-rich, easy-to-use, desktop environment for all Red Hat Enterprise Linux family members (including Red Hat Desktop). A brief summary of new features:
- Personal productivity: Advanced user capabilities are provided by the OpenOffice.org productivity suite, the Firefox web browser and Evolution email client
- Plug-and-play device support: Easy handling of devices such as USB disks and digital cameras (as well as photo management applications such as gThumb)
- Multimedia: Applications for audio, video, and streaming content such as RhythmBox, HelixPlayer, Totem, and SoundJuicer
- User environment: GNOME 2.8 provides numerous enhancements for a more consistent graphical look and feel. Comprehensive management tools (e.g. printer and network management and VNC-based application session sharing) and utilities (e.g. Gaim instant messaging, and GIMP image processing) combine to provide a complete and highly functional user experience.
- Interoperability: Technologies that allow user login authentication with Microsoft Active Directory, NTLM authentication for web-based applications, Evolution mail client access to Windows Exchange Servers
- IIIMF: The Internet/Intranet Input Method framework provides the next-generation multilingual Unicode input method framework. It offers many features, such as full Unicode support and the ability to run multiple concurrent language engines.
Miscellaneous features
As a major new release, almost every aspect of Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been enhanced. Some of the more important improvements:
- Compatibility with prior releases: Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4 includes compatibility libraries that enable most v.3 and v.2.1 applications to continue to run without modification.
- Languages: Focused on international standards, such as OpenI18N and GB18030, Red Hat Enterprise Linux has documentation and software available in 15 languages: English, Japanese, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Italian, French, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Devnagari, Bangla, Punjabi, Tamil, Gujarati.
- Auditing: In an update planned for mid-2005, a new auditing facility will be available that provides an open, bidirectional socket interface that can be used by auditing applications. It provides comprehensive auditing capabilities for SELinux and standard Linux events.
- File serving: Provision of NFSv4 provides features such improved security, operation coalescing and integrated file locking, while Samba provides easy access to Microsoft Windows printers and file shares.
- Software development: The latest GCC 3.4 compiler toolchain, and a technology preview of the forthcoming GCC 4.0 toolchain, are provided. These offer standards-compliant C/C++ and Fortran 95 development environments.
- Advanced configuration and power interface: Support for the ACPI standard enables a wide range of power management capabilities (battery monitoring, automated power down, suspend), and provides a foundation for increasingly sophisticated features in the future.
- Extras: Optional software is provided on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Extras CD and Red Hat Network channel. This includes features such as additional desktop applications (e.g. Adobe Reader, Macromedia Flash), Java environments, and printroom-quality Agfa/Monotype fonts.

Vendetta 1.7.19
Vendetta Online is a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) from Guild Software Inc. more>>
As pilots in the Vendetta universe, the progression of the players character is up to each individual. The starting Nation affiliation gives the player certain benefits and liabilities that fit the particular culture of that Nation, but this merely serves as a starting point for the character. If the user wishes to be a peaceful trader, military pilot, guard for hire, dastardly pirate, or whatever the player imagines, this is all up to the behaviour and play style of the user. There are both lawful and lawless places in the universe, and many different factions (including a pirate faction) with differing motives and shifting alignments. The universe is never a completely "safe" place, but lawful authorities do not take kindly to combat within their populated areas, making those places safer than most. More lawless regions may prove more dangerous, but potentially yield lucrative possibilities for those who align themselves with the darker underbelly of society. The life of a criminal is difficult, however, and pirates are not well-loved in most of the populated galaxy.
Character progression takes place in the form of a variety of skills and other attributes, any combination of which can potentially open up new gameplay content (missions, ships, equipment, trade items, etc). General activity related to a skill can increase it (trading can increase the Commerce skill, etc), but taking on missions will generally increase skills that much faster. Missions are offered by particular factions, with mission difficulty and availability increasing as the character becomes better known to the faction. Rising in the esteem of a given faction can itself yield better item prices, a wider item selection, and access to unusual "special" equipment available only to those who have proven themselves worthy. It is possible to win many types of accolades and commendations from particular factions, all of which can help demonstrate the characters accomplishments. These and other character stats may be viewed by other users in a Character Information panel.
The ships themselves are highly customizable, with various different designs and addon modules making possible a wide range of equipment loadouts. In addition, users may configure the color of their individual craft. Various types of ships are specifically suited to a particular task (such as combat or trading), while others prove more flexible, depending on how they are configured by the pilot.
Vendetta Online launched in North America in late 2004. Since then, continuous full-time development has pushed the game still further, towards the intended goal of "version 2.0" in 2007. Patches, upgrades and releases are usually seen on a weekly basis, the game ever-increasing in complexity as Guild Software gets closer to their next milestone. Since 2006, the userbase has also been helping out, creating new content via the Player Contribution Corps toolset, allowing the development of new missions and other features. The level of developer-userbase interaction is often considered one of the unique aspects of VO, with the core dev team posting and replying daily on the messageboard, and user-requested features often appearing in-game in a matter of days or weeks.
Zap! 1.196.0
Zap is a game of action and strategy. more>>
As a 2D game Zap can be played with keyboard+mouse or (recommended) a dual-analog gamepad. Zap has several game types, including CTF, Zone Control, Retrieve, Soccer, Hunters and Rabbit, and it supports familiar features like hierarchal V-menu chat and recorded voice.
Zap is a game of action and strategy.
Main features:
Capture the Flag
- Team game where the objective is to take the enemys flag and return it to your flag. Each capture earns your team one point. Take care to defend your flag from the enemy -- you can only score if it is at home!
Soccer
- Team game where the objective is to move the white circle (the ball) into the goal of the opponents color.
Zone Control
- Team game with a single flag and multiple "capture zone" areas. The goal of the game is to escort a team member carrying the flag to each of the capture zones in the map. When a capture zone is entered by the flag carrier, the zone turns to that teams color and the team scores a point. If the capture zone was already owned by a different team, the team that lost the zone loses a point. If all the zones on the level are captured by a single team, that scores a "touchdown", and the zones and flag reset.
Retrieve
- In Retrieve, one or more flags are scattered throughout the level. Teams compete to bring these flags back to team-colored goal zones. Each retrieved flag is worth one point to the capturing team. If a team retrieves all the flags on the level, the team keeps the points for the flags and the flags reset to their original locations.
Hunters
- Solo game where the objective is to collect flags from other players and return them to the Nexus for points. Each player starts with one flag, and drops it if he or she is zapped. Scoring in Hunters is based on how many flags the player is carrying when touching the open Nexus. The first flag is worth one point, the second is worth two, the third 3, and so on. So the total value of capturing 5 flags would be 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15 points. If the Nexus is dark, it is closed -- the upper timer in the lower right corner counts down to when it will next be open.
Rabbit
- Solo game wherein there is one flag that all players are fighting to control. Players accumulate points by holding the flag, zapping the flag carrier or zapping other players while holding the flag.
Zapmatch
- Solo game, often of short duration between levels. Just zap as many other players as you can!

BlockBuster (Independence Day) 1.1
BlockBuster is an arcade game special for the Independance Day. more>>
birthday this year (2004).
The 4th of July is a time for the Red, White and Blue. A time for Picnics, Parades, Marching Bands and from this time - its a time for BlockBuster - our special release for Independence
Day!
BlockBuster is a collection of wonderful arcade games. Relaxed game-playing modes are present, as well as those that will require all your skills in quickly moving the mouse
and shooting your clicks at the right spot. This game will give you possibility to exercise both your brainpower and reaction speed.
Game Rules
The main goal of the game is very simple-to remove color squares from the board. They can be taken out only in blocks of the same color, these blocks are selected when the mouse moves over. Just click on the block to take it out. Single squares cannot be
cleared, and when no blocks remain-the game is over. There are two different games:
STRATEGY
Here the goal is just to remove as many squares in few moves as possible. You get two points for every square youve managed to clear at the end of the game the percent of the field left uncleared is counted down. This value is shown on the indicator under the
playing field. The new level begins. At the end of it the percent of the squares left on a board is added to the value on indicator.
When indicator reaches 100%, the game is over. The goal is to go through as many levels as possible.
ARCADE
In this game you have to remove like-colored blocks that are in clusters so that they couldnt fill the board to the top. Removing big blocks will bring you more points. Youll get extra bonus if you remove extremely big blocks.
To move to the next level you should cope with a certain number of lines that will be added to the board. The speed of the game grows as you move from one level to another. Bombs that sometimes appear on the board will help you to cope with a level: a click on a bomb
of certain color will blow up all the squares of the same color. Clicking on a black bomb will blow up all the squares around it.
