aPong

aPong

aPong is a Pong game written in x86 Assembly language. more>>
aPong is a Pong game written in x86 Assembly language.
As I run Linux on my own machine, I dont do a lot with intel syntax. I needed to learn this for a lab. After scouring the internet for a few hours, I came across NASM. This looked as though Id be able to just code in this, take it into the Windows computers and have it just work.
No such luck. So, thats beside the point now, but I wrote this in order to get to grips with the syntax (which turned out to be the wrong one.)
Main features:
- 2-player
The left one uses Q/A to go up/down, the second one uses P/L. Escape to quit.
- Uses SDL from assembly language
I quite like SDL. I quite dislike x86. I already know SDL. It was already a learning exercise, I wasnt going to go off learning xlib or something at the same time. This gave me a way to quickly get the code written.
- Avoids the use of frame pointers
Why do you need frame pointers if youre not going to be running it in a debugger. Its not difficult to keep track of the stack frame if youre writing it yourself. You dont need to keep moving the stack pointer inside a function, just once at the start and once at the end. Then all you need is to take offsets from esp (so long as you remember how big the frame is at the time.)
This really gets on my nerves. People dont seem to realise the amount of overhead (in terms of lost cycles) that a function call has. To say global variables are BAD is just plain wrong. Sure, it can lend itself to abuse, but thats like saying you shouldnt code in C or use UNIX because they dont hold your hand.
- The input system isnt great.
Because I was trying to keep the code size down, I went the way of using SDL_GetKeyState and SDL_PumpEvents. These mean that if the key is not actually down at the time of the PumpEvents call, it drops the keypress. (if you want to see how you should do it, look at the events system in STP

Openbravo 2.30 / 2.31 Beta

Openbravo 2.30 / 2.31 Beta

Openbravo is an ERP business solution for small and medium sized companies. more>>
Openbravo is an ERP business solution for small and medium sized companies. Its database structure is originally based on Compiere. Openbravo uses a fully Web based client/server architecture, and can be used from any Web browser.
It has support for PostgreSQL and Oracle database back-ends. Openbravo project is currently available in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian.
Main features:
Fully Functional
- Openbravo includes the full suite of functionalities that are common nowadays in an extended ERP: procurement, warehouse, project management, manufacturing, sales and financial processes. Basic CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and BI (Business Intelligence) are built in as well. Openbravo is already in production in companies spanning several industries, including distribution, services and manufacturing.
Truly integrated, truly an ERP
- Openbravo is different from other ERP solutions that piece together independent modules, often resulting in unnecessary complexity and unstable interfaces. From the start, Openbravo was designed with the whole at heart: all functionalities share a common architecture, philosophy, rules and user interface. Yet, you can still decide if and when you configure or use each functionality provided by Openbravo.
Open Source
- Openbravos open source license permits unrestricted access to the source code and makes it possible for an independent community of IT professionals to provide services without any type of vendor lock-in.
- Additionally, Openbravo provides a broad range of functionalities that can be easily customized to fit the common business needs of SMEs. We understand that each company is unique and has its own specific particularities. For these companies, that require a more particular customization, we offer something more: unrestricted access to the underlying source code to tailor to your specific needs. Youre not likely to get this kind of flexibility if you license a solution from a traditional vendor.
Revolutionary Architecture
- Openbravo is developed around a revolutionary architecture that results in a better way to build software applications. Through a combination of well known standards such as MVC (Model, View, Control) and MDD (Model Driven Development) an abstraction layer has been created that provides the automation of code generation. This strategy enables higher productivity than in other architectures or development platforms. Besides, it provides better quality because the files are coded always using the same rules and style. Consequently, if a specific requirement, not met by the standard solution, needs to be developed from scratch, coders can greatly benefit from a consistent coding framework.
Fast Implementation
- Openbravo can be installed in just a few hours. After having your business needs defined, it can be customized to fit them in a matter of days. In just a few weeks you can have your current business information migrated to the Openbravo, integrations with other systems done, specific requirements developed and your employees trained to start working with the new enterprise management system. Openbravo does not require any irreversible implementation decisions. This allows you to go into production faster. Moreover, the system can be easily adapted to changing business needs whenever required and have a flexible deployment of new functionalities.
Best-in-Class Usability
- Because Openbravo is a pure web-based ERP users access the application with just a web browser, a well known user interface environment. The user interface is generated based on rules and these are designed to minimize the user learning curve. We continue investing to have the best-in-class usability, adopting the most recent presentation techniques for web applications like AJAX.
Whats New in 2.30 Stable Release:
- Alarms can now be defined by users (with e-mail notification).
- An alarm is a periodic check that is performed to verify certain conditions.
- A complete revision of Accounting was made, improving reporting and tracking.
- Messages were also revised to ensure that they provide a clear explanation, a homogeneous style, and a consistent user interface.
- The applications user interface was redesigned using Dojo as the user interface library.

Adobe Flex 2.0 Beta1

Adobe Flex 2.0 Beta1

Flex 2.0 delivers an integrated set of tools and technology for build and deploy scalable Rich Internet Applications. more>>
Adobe Flex is the complete solution for building cross-platform Rich Internet Applications within the enterprise and across the web.
Flex 2.0 delivers an integrated set of tools and technology enabling developers to build and deploy scalable Rich Internet Applications.
Flex provides a modern, standards-based language supporting common design patterns and includes a client runtime, programming model, development environment, and advanced data
Main features:
- Flex Framework 2.0
- Flex Builder 2.0
- Flex Enterprise Services 2.0
- Flex Charting Components 2.0
- ActionScript 3.0
- Flash Player 8.5.
Enhancements:
- The Flex 2.0 product line enables developers to build rich, engaging web-based applications based on the ubiquitous Macromedia Flash runtime from Adobe and includes a complete solution for building Rich Internet Applications. Macromedia (now Adobe) originally coined the phrase Rich Internet Application (RIA) to describe a trend in the web development community toward building more engaging web experiences using Flash and HTML.
- The first generation of RIAs combined graphic-rich user interface controls that reduced or eliminated page refreshes. They have since evolved into sophisticated desktop-like applications that integrate rich data visualization components, such as data grids and graphical charts, multimedia audio and video, collaborative features like whiteboards and cobrowsing experiences, and real-time data push. As the complexity of such applications increased, so too did the cost of building and maintaining RIAs. Adobe responded to this need with Flex, which has become the industry-leading RIA development solution.
- Developers are a major focus of the Flex 2.0 release. To ensure that we take the product in a direction that meets your needs, the Flex team is excited to announce the public beta release of the Flex 2.0 product line. If youre not already familiar with Flex 2.0, you can find a complete overview in the David Wadhwanis article, Flex 2.0: Enabling the Next Generation of Rich Internet Applications. Read on to learn more about changes since the release of Flex 2.0 alpha 1.
- The beta 1 release includes updated installers for Flex Builder 2.0, Flex Charting 2.0, Flex Framework 2.0, and Flash Player 8.5. In addition, Flex Enterprise Services 2.0 is now available for the first time. The following outlines what is new in the Flex 2.0 beta 1 release.

libopkele is a C++ implementation of an OpenID decentralized identity system.

Normally, I do not jump on the emerging technologies, especially in the blogging arena, but this one is truly brilliant. Besides, despite its livejournal origins, the very idea doesnt have much to do with blogging.
In case you happen to be aware of the so called rest of the world existance, you may be as well aware of the frustrating experience to secure a visa to enter any particular territory and having to ask whatever country you happen to live in for assistance in confirming your identity. As if being yourself is not enough!
The same goes for Internet. It is much more pleasant to prove that you are what you are by being yourself and to carry your very own identity around. Furthermore, you dont have to force people to submit to your authority for the sole purpose of being recognized (if you want them to, youre not interested in this system and I am not interested in you either).
The library is semi-documented using doxygen markup. You may wish to make dox target to build the documentation.
Enhancements:
- Standards-compliance of URL canonicalization was improved along with association expiry handling.
- The documentation was updated slightly.

Damn Small Linux Not 0.1 RC4

Damn Small Linux Not 0.1 RC4

Damn Small Linux Not provides a reliable, and compact array of applications based mostly on the GTK2 libraries. more>>
Damn Small Linux Not is built on Damn Small Linux technology. Damn Small Linux Not is also small, bigger than DSL but smaller than most. Damn Small Linux Not provides a reliable, and compact array of applications based mostly on the GTK2 libraries.
DSL-N is not an evolution of DSL, it is not intended as progress over the philosophy of DSL, but is intended for a different user, or the same user under different circumstances.
Main features:
- it is small
- it has software which is feature full
- it takes advantage of redundant lib dependencies and suits to pack features into a tight distribution
- DSL-N has a modern kernel and does not squeeze out critical modules that would limit compatibility
Like DSL, DSL-n can:
- Boot from from a CD as a live Linux distribution (LiveCD)
- Boot from a USB pen drive
- Boot from within a host operating system (thats right, it can run *inside* Windows)
- Run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive via a method we call "frugal install"
- Transform into a Debian OS with a traditional hard drive install
- Run fully in RAM
- Modularly grow -- DSL-N is highly extendable without the need to customize
- The applications in DSL-N were chosen because they are functional, usable, and relatively compact. Unlike DSL, DSL-N has GTK2 applications, that means DSL-N will need more ram and CPU cycles than DSL. To have a pleasant experience, we recommend at least 64MBs and 300MHz.
DSL-N, unlike DSL, does not have a hard size cap, but it is being developed by the DSL team, and we hate bloat! So, dont expect DSL-N to get too big.
Why are you making this offshoot of DSL when DSL is so successful? Because a 50MB, GTK2 based distribution, with a 2.6.x kernel and excellent hardware detection/support is a contradiction in terms. DSL-N represents our best effort to stay compact while providing for the needs of those who want the Bling Bling such as SATA support, Gnumeric, Abiword, gMplayer.
Enhancements:
- Added "noprompt noeject" to default boot options for frugal installs.
- Fixed madwifi wireless.
- Fixed chpasswd vs passwd. "secure" boot option now works correctly.
- Added gnu-utils into the base iso.
- Fixed USB2 not loading bug
- Improved mydsl=hdxy when specified to not also search this makes it consistent with restore boot option.
- Enhanced exitcheck to prompt warning if no backup device is selected when requested to save special settings.
- Fixed multi user hard drive install bug.
- Added murgaLua Lua/Fltk development toolkit.

refdb-mode 1.4

refdb-mode 1.4

refdb-mode is a minor mode for Emacs which implements an interface to RefDB. more>>
RefDB integrates nicely into Emacs. Combined with editing modes for SGML, XML, and RIS documents, youll get an integrated authoring environment with direct access to your bibliographic data.
"Cite-while-you-write", document transformation, and previewing is just a few mouseclicks away for DocBook SGML and XML as well as for TEI XML documents. Emacs support is not included in the RefDB sources, but available separately.
If your editor of choice should be Emacs or XEmacs, the RIS major mode (ris.el) will make editing RIS datasets a little bit more comfortable. Font-locking will help you to spot syntax errors. Especially the end tag (ER - ) is prone to lack the trailing space if youre not careful.
The ris-mode displays valid tags in blue, except the special type (TY - ) and end (ER - ) tags which are shown in red. The tag contents are colored according to several criteria. If the contents of a field is limited in length, the color will extend only up to that limit. Author/editor, publication date, and reprint fields are checked for a valid content. ris-mode also provides the following commands:
- insert-set (C-c-C-s): inserts a new skeleton dataset (a "reference"). The function will prompt you to enter the publication type. You can use either the auto-completion feature of the minibuffer to enter a valid type or the history feature to select a previously entered type. The function will create a newline, a type tag with the type you selected, default sets of tags for a selected range of types, as well as an end tag.
- insert-tag ( C-c-C-t): insert a new tag. Use either the auto-completion feature of the minibuffer to enter a valid tag or the history feature to select a previously entered tag.
duplicate-tag (M-RET): insert a new line below the current line with the same tag as the current line. This command is convenient if you add multiple keywords or authors, each of which have to go on separate tag lines.
- backward-set (C-x[) and forward-set (C-x]): move between RIS datasets.
- narrow-to-set (C-xns) and widen (C-xnw): narrow the buffer to the current RIS set and widen to the full buffer contents.
The mode currently does not check the length of author entries, nor does it handle continued lines in any way. It does not attempt to check whether a reference is complete (e.g. it wont notify you if there is no author)
Enhancements:
- Support for Muse documents was added.
