DoXFS 0.7.4

DoXFS 0.7.4

DoXFS is a filesystem-based document management system. more>>
DoXFS project is a filesystem-based document management system.
DoXFS (pron. docs-eff-ess) is a document management system that uses the XFS filesystem to store both content (files) and meta-data (file attributes), bypassing the traditional architecture of filesystem and database, and leveraging the built-in advantages of XFS.
Currently, it offers a Web frontend based on PHP and standard management functionality (create, delete, attributes add/delete, etc.) as well as extras such as versioning and Full Text Indexing (using Namazu).
Enhancements:
- New Features in DoXFS Web Client:
- Super users can now see all of the hidden properties of a document or topic object.
- Some of the hidden properties are now editable (be careful) while the rest are read-only and should not be modified.
- Browse lists are now sorted ascending from the entire list.
- More work needs to be done here so that the end user can choose to sort ascending or descending.
- Bug fixes in DoXFS Web Client:
- When create a new document, the title bar showed an incorrect creation date.
- The topic tree was not refreshing after creating a new topic.
- New Features in DoXFS Server:
- Added a new index array to the document parents index to support sorting of all documents in a topic.

XFS combines advanced journaling technology with full 64-bit addressing and scalable structures and algorithms. more>>
XFS combines advanced journaling technology with full 64-bit addressing and scalable structures and algorithms. This combination delivers the most scalable high-performance filesystem ever conceived.
Main features:
Quick Recovery
- The XFS journaling technology allows it to restart very quickly after an unexpected interruption, regardless of the number of files it is managing. Traditional filesystems must do special filesystem checks after an interruption, which can take many hours to complete. The XFS journaling avoids these lengthy filesystem checks.
Fast Transactions
- The XFS filesystem provides the advantages of journaling while minimizing the performance impact of journaling on read and write data transactions. Its journaling structures and algorithms are tuned to log the transactions rapidly.
- XFS uses efficient tree structures for fast searches and rapid space allocation. XFS continues to deliver rapid response times, even for directories with tens of thousands of entries.
Massive Scalability
- XFS is a full 64-bit filesystem, and thus is capable of handling filesystems as large as a million terabytes.
- 263 = 9 x 1018 = 9 exabytes
- A million terabytes is thousands of times larger than most large filesystems in use today. This may seem to be an extremely large address space, but it is needed to plan for the exponential disk density improvements observed in the storage industry in recent years. As disk capacity grows, not only does the address space need to be sufficiently large, but the structures and algorithms need to scale. XFS is ready today with the technologies needed for this scalability.
- XFS also continues to evolve to match the capabilities of the hardware it is being deployed on. Efficiency when dealing with large amounts (terabytes) of main memory and hence large numbers of active files and large amounts of cached file data are areas demanding continual improvements. Extending XFS to improve performance on large NUMA machines is also an area of active research and development.
Efficient Allocations
- XFS implements extremely sophisticated space management techniques. Efficiency in space management has been achieved through the use of variable sized extents, rather than the simple single-block-at-a-time mechanism of many other filesystems. XFS was the first filesystem to implement delayed space allocation for buffered writes, supports direct I/O, provides an optional realtime allocator, and is able to align allocations based on the geometry of the underlying storage device. The XFS allocator performs admirably in the presence of multiple parallel writers, and is renowned for its resistance to space fragmentation under such conditions.
Excellent Bandwidth
- XFS is capable of delivering very close to the raw I/O performance that the underlying hardware can provide. XFS has proven scalability on SGI Altix systems of multiple gigabytes-per-second on multiple terabyte filesystems.

KoboldFS 0.2.2

KoboldFS 0.2.2

application-level distributed file system more>>
KoboldFS 0.2.2 is a professional and powerful application-level distributed filesystem which is written in Python. This product will be an excellent choice for everyone.

Major Features:

  1. Application level -- no special kernel modules required
  2. No single point of failure -- all the components of a KoboldFS setup (servers and database) can be run on multiple machines, so there's no single point of failure (a minimum of 2 machines is recommended)
  3. Automatic file replication -- files are automatically replicated between all the servers. In KoboldFS there is no concept of "class", so it is not possible to specify if a given file has to be replicated only in a subset of the available servers
  4. "Better than RAID" -- in a non-SAN RAID setup, the disks are redundant, but the host isn't. If you lose the entire machine, the files are inaccessible. KoboldFS replicates the files between devices which are on different hosts, so files are always available
  5. Flat name space -- Files are identified by named keys in a flat, global name space. You can create as many name spaces as you'd like, so multiple applications with potentially conflicting keys can run on the same MogileFS installation
  6. Shared-Nothing -- KoboldFS doesn't depend on a pricey SAN with shared disks. Every machine maintains its own local disks
  7. No RAID required -- Local disks on KoboldFS storage nodes can be in a RAID, or not. Its cheaper not to, as RAID doesn't buy you any safety that MogileFS doesnt already provide
  8. Local file system agnostic -- Local disks on KoboldFS storage nodes can be formatted with your file system of choice (ext3, XFS, etc..). KoboldFS does its own internal directory hashing so it doesn't hit file system limits such as "max files per directory" or "max directories per directory". Use what you're comfortable with
  9. Completely portable -- it is a python-only module, thus can be run on any operating system and architecture which is supported by Python
  10. Database-agnostic -- it can run with any SQL database; actually only the PostgreSQL support is implemented, but adding support for new databases is quick and easy
  11. Support for serving the stored files directly by an external web server, reducing the load on the application servers.
  12. KoboldFS is not: POSIX Compliant -- you don't run regular Unix applications or databases against KoboldFS; its meant for archiving write-once files and doing only sequential reads (though you can modify a file by way of overwriting it with a new version).

Enhancements: Fixes in the Data Manager: use the connection pool instead of always keeping a database connection open.

Requirements: Python

Rubix Linux 1.0

Rubix Linux 1.0

Rubix is a Linux distribution forked from Slackware Linux. more>>
Rubix is a Linux distribution forked from Slackware Linux.
It differs from its parent in that Rubix uses Arch Linuxs pacman for simplified package management with dependency resolution and it has a completely revamped init system, maintaining the BSD style, but adding modularity.
What is Rubix?
- It is a new Linux distribution that is something of a fork of Slackware 10.1.
- It will branch off in its own direction very quickly, in many ways, it already has.
- It maintains the Slackware traditions of Simplicity, Security and Stability.
- It will run on all i486 hardware and newer and is optimized for i686.
- It is designed to support mission critical hardware and be very admin friendly.
- It is a great distribution for knowledgable *NIX users!
- If you know Slackware, you will do great in Rubix!
How is Rubix different from Slackware?
- Rubix uses Arch Linuxs pacman for simplified package management with dependency resolution.
- Rubix has completely revamped the init system, maintaining the BSD style, but adding modularity.
- Rubix uses gcc 3.4.1 and compiles most packages with SSP (aka: ProPolice), and PIE (Position Independant Executable) wherever possible, but will never patch software just to make it compile with SSP andor PIE. This means that Rubix should not be thought of as a hardened distribution as many packages can not be compiled with SSP, however, it does mean that Rubix is harder than most. This logic makes most software more secure and does not require downstream patching for compatability, a major goal of Rubix.
Enhancements:
- This is the inaugural release of the Rubix Linux operating system. Rubix Linux is distributed with the Linux kernel versions 2.6.15.5, 2.4.32 and 2.4.32-grsec. Rubix Linux is well equipped to serve in both desktop and server roles. Rubix has exceptional hardware detection with udev replacing hotplug for 2.6 kernels and the latest KDE desktop version 3.5.1. Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Thunderbird 1.5 are now the default web browser and email client. Rubix Linux also supports the best modern filesystems including ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS and now Reiser4 (with 2.6 kernels) from installation.

Mondo Rescue 2.2.4

Mondo Rescue 2.2.4

Mondo it backs up your GNU/Linux server or workstation to tape, CD-R, CD-RW, NFS or hard disk partition. more>>
Mondo it backs up your GNU/Linux server or workstation to tape, CD-R, CD-RW, NFS or hard disk partition. In the event of catastrophic data loss, you will be able to restore all of your data [or as much as you want], from bare metal if necessary.

Mondo is in use by Lockheed-Martin, Nortel Networks, Siemens, HP (US and France), IBM, NASAs JPL, the US Dept of Agriculture, dozens of smaller companies, and tens of thousands of users.

Mondo is comprehensive. Mondo supports LVM, RAID, ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS, VFAT, and can support additional filesystems easily: just e-mail the mailing list with your request. It supports adjustments in disk geometry, including migration from non-RAID to RAID. Mondo runs on all major Linux distributions and is getting better all the time. You may even use it to backup non-Linux partitions, such as NTFS.

Mondo is free! It has been published under the GPL (GNU Public License), partly to expose it to thousands of potential beta-testers but mostly as a contribution to the Linux community. I charge for 1-to-1 technical support to fund Mondos development.

Gentoo Linux 2007.0

Gentoo Linux 2007.0

Gentoo Linux uses an enhanced BSD ports-style package system. more>>
Gentoo Linux, a special flavor of Linux that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability, performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience.
Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo Linux can become an ideal secure server, development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution or something else -- whatever you need it to be. Because of its near-unlimited adaptability, we call Gentoo Linux a metadistribution.
Portage is the heart of Gentoo Linux, and performs many key functions. For one, Portage is the software distribution system for Gentoo Linux. To get the latest software for Gentoo Linux, you type one command: emerge --sync.
This command tells Portage to update your local "Portage tree" over the Internet. Your local Portage tree contains a complete collection of scripts that can be used by Portage to create and install the latest Gentoo packages. Currently, we have more than 8000 packages in our Portage tree, with new ones being added all the time.
Portage is also a package building and installation system. When you want to install a package, you type emerge packagename, at which point Portage automatically builds a custom version of the package to your exact specifications, optimizing it for your hardware and ensuring that the optional features in the package that you want are enabled -- and those you dont want arent.
Portage also keeps your system up-to-date. Typing emerge -u world -- one command -- will ensure that all the packages that you want on your system are updated automatically.
Portage will keep your Gentoo Linux system as "up-to-date" as you desire. And because of this, experienced Gentoo users dont pay too much attention to "new versions" of Gentoo Linux -- after all, the latest and greatest version of Gentoo Linux is always available by typing an emerge --sync command.
Theres no need to wait several months for a "new version" of Gentoo Linux to be released because Gentoo Linux is continually updated and refined and these improvements are immediately made available to you.
Main features:
- Support for x86, AMD64, PowerPC, UltraSparc, Alpha and MIPS processors
- LiveCD-based installation for x86, AMD64, PowerPC, UltraSparc and Alpha
- Latest stable KDE and GNOME
- Various optimized Linux kernels
- Very modern GNU development environment
- Excellent filesystem support: ReiserFS, XFS, ext3, EVMS, LVM
- Excellent hardware support: NVIDIA, Creative Labs Live! and Audigy
- Modular OpenGL and compiler sub-system (supports multiple co-existing versions)
- Clean, dependency-based system initialization scripts
- New "hardened" Gentoo security initiative
- more than 8000 packages of the latest and greatest software
- Enhanced Portage capabilities
It all began with Extra Time. Time to explore, Time to discover, Time to experiment. Thats how the creator of Gentoo, Daniel Robbins stepped into the world of Linux. He started with Debian Linux, setup a couple of applications, learnt the ins & outs of Linux and as most Linux users do, tried out a couple of distributions and settled to help out with a distro called Stampede Linux.
Soon he was into Stampede development and working on their package management system. After a period of time and due to certain issues, he moved on and decided that he would create his own distribution.
Thus, Enoch was born. Daniel wanted Enoch to be a blazingly fast distro with capabilities to completely automate the package creation and upgrading process. Soon there was a #enoch on irc.freenode.net and 10 developers helping with the distro. Over a period of time, as Enoch started improving, they felt that it needed a new name.
They called it Gentoo Linux. Around about the time Gentoo was moving to its 1.0 release, Daniel bought a new, fast machine. The motherboard model had a faulty chip that caused Linux to lock up when idle and because of that, Gentoo Linux development came to a complete halt.
Since there wasnt anything going on with Gentoo, Daniel switched to FreeBSD. He liked what he saw. Especially the "Ports" system. And he returned to the Linux world. Along with the help of other developers like Achim Gottinger, Gentoo was back on track & charging ahead.
The whole package management system was redesigned & called Portage. Gentoo has been in active development ever since, with tons of features being continually added over the years. Teams of volunteers help keep Gentoo on the bleeding edge and patched to ensure maximum security & stability.
The Gentoo development model was extended with a complete project-based approach where each project develops independently but cooperatively with other Gentoo projects. Regular meetings between the project leads (called "project managers") keep the development high-paced. The Gentoo Foundation has been created to provide financial caretaking, juridical protection and oversee general Gentoo development to keep it in line with the Social Contract.
In April 2004, Daniel decided to resign from his development responsibilities within Gentoo. We are all very grateful for all the work that Daniel has put in Gentoo and wish him the best.
Gentoo still continues to grow, evolve and improve itself - new projects are added, new developers are joining, new packages are added every day. The Gentoo developer and user community is undoubtedly Gentoos strongest value.
Enhancements:
- After several delays, the Gentoo Release Engineering team is proud to announce the release of Gentoo Linux 2007.0, code named Secret Sauce. This release includes a completely rewritten version of the Gentoo Linux Installer on the AMD64 and x86 live CD and live DVD images. It also includes GNOME 2.16.2, KDE 3.5.5, Xfce 4.4, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3, OpenOffice.org 2.1.0, and the 2.6.19 Linux kernel. Updated hardware support is among the highlights of the x86 release. Besides the many updated office and productivity packages x86 also brings an update to glibc 2.5.
