xterm XFree86 4.4.99.23
xterm is a terminal emulator for the X Window System. more>>
The xterm program is the standard terminal emulator for the X Window System. It provides DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014 compatible terminals for programs that cant use the window system directly.
If the underlying operating system supports terminal resizing capabilities (for example, the SIGWINCH signal in systems derived from 4.3bsd), xterm will use the facilities to notify programs running in the window whenever it is resized.
Enhancements:
- increase color pairs value for xterm-256color and xterm-88color to match ncurses, which has an experimental option to support this.
- modify ifdefs to make AIX use termios rather than termio; the struct sizes for the two were not the same.
- improve CF_WITH_IMAKE_CFLAGS configure macro script for OSMAJORVERSION and OSMINORVERSION values, e.g., for Tru64 and AIX.
- modify ifdef to define USE_POSIX_TERMIOS for Darwin (patch by Min Sik Kim).
- modify find_utmp() to initialize the whole utmpx struct (except ut_id), since that is needed for OSF1 4.0D to prevent an infinite loop on exit.
- add configure check before adding -D_POSIX_SOURCE since some platforms predefine it, e.g., cygwin.
- add simplified sed expressions in CF_IMAKE_CFLAGS configure script macro to ensure value for PROJECTROOT is quoted on Solaris, i.e., when nested ( and ) are not interpreted correctly.
- correct DEC rectangle operations to reset state after completing the operations.
- modify CASE_ST handling in charproc.c to ensure that the parse state is reset even if xterm is not currently processing an OSC or other string (patch by Johnny Billquist forwarded by Matthias Scheler, NetBSD xsrc/29003).
- fix OS/2 build for innotek_libc (patch by David Yeo).
- fix a regression from patch #197 fix for Debian #277832 which disowned the selection if it was scrolled, e.g., by the user pressing return at the bottom of the screen (Debian #291787).
- move the warning/exit for missing $DISPLAY into the error handler in case -display is given, and the connect fails for some other reason.

Xfree86 4.7.0
XFree86 is an open source X11-based desktop infrastructure. more>>
XFree86 is an open source X11-based desktop infrastructure.
The XFree86 Project, Inc is a global volunteer organisation which produces XFree86, a freely redistributable open-source implementation of the X Window System since 1992.
XFree86 runs primarily on UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems like Linux, all of the BSD variants, Sun Solaris both native 32 and 64 bit support, Solaris x86, Mac OS X (via Darwin), SGIs Irix as well as other platforms like OS/2 and Cygwin.
What XFree86 does, is provide a client/server interface between the display hardware (those physical things like the mouse, keyboard, and video displays) and the desktop environment, (this is typically called a window manager as it deals with how X is displayed i.e. the overall appearance).
Yet X it goes beyond that and also gives the infrastructure and a standardized application interface (API). All of this, makes XFree86 platform-independent, network-transparent and extensible.

freeglut 2.2.0
freeglut is an OpenSourced clone of the GLUT library. more>>
freeglut is a completely OpenSourced alternative to the OpenGL Utility Toolkit (GLUT) library. GLUT was originally written by Mark Kilgard to support the sample programs in the second edition OpenGL RedBook.
Since then, GLUT has been used in a wide variety of practical applications because it is simple, widely available and highly portable.
GLUT (and hence freeglut) allows the user to create and manage windows containing OpenGL contexts on a wide range of platforms and also read the mouse, keyboard and joystick functions.
freeglut is released under the X-Consortium license.
The original GLUT library seems to have been abandoned with the most recent version (3.7) dating back to August 1998. Its license does not allow anyone to distribute modified library code.
This would be OK, if not for the fact that GLUT is getting old and really needs improvement. Also, GLUTs license is incompatible with some software distributions (e.g., XFree86).

xrestop 0.4
xrestop is a utility to monitor the usage of resources within the X Server, and display them in a manner similar to top. more>>
xrestop project is a utility to monitor the usage of resources within the X Server, and display them in a manner similar to top.
Xrestop uses the X-Resource extension to provide top like statistics of each connected X11 clients server side resource usage. It is intended as a developer tool to aid more efficient server resource usage and debug server side leakage.
It should work with any server supporting the X-Resource extension, including the freedesktop.org server and XFree86 4.3+. "xdpyinfo | grep Resource" should tell you if your server supports this extension.
Installation:
The `configure shell script attempts to guess correct values for various system-dependent variables used during compilation. It uses those values to create a `Makefile in each directory of the package.
It may also create one or more `.h files containing system-dependent definitions. Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status that you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, and a file `config.log containing compiler output (useful mainly for debugging `configure).
It can also use an optional file (typically called `config.cache and enabled with `--cache-file=config.cache or simply `-C) that saves the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring. (Caching is disabled by default to prevent problems with accidental use of stale cache files.)
If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try to figure out how `configure could check whether to do them, and mail diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README so they can be considered for the next release.
If you are using the cache, and at some point `config.cache contains results you dont want to keep, you may remove or edit it.
The file `configure.ac (or `configure.in) is used to create `configure by a program called `autoconf. You only need `configure.ac if you want to change it or regenerate `configure using a newer version of `autoconf.
The simplest way to compile this package is:
1. `cd to the directory containing the packages source code and type `./configure to configure the package for your system.
If youre using `csh on an old version of System V, you might need to type `sh ./configure instead to prevent `csh from trying to execute
`configure itself.
Running `configure takes awhile. While running, it prints some messages telling which features it is checking for.
2. Type `make to compile the package.
3. Optionally, type `make check to run any self-tests that come with the package.
4. Type `make install to install the programs and any data files and documentation.
5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory by typing `make clean. To also remove the files that `configure created (so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer), type `make distclean.
There is also a `make maintainer-clean target, but that is intended mainly for the packages developers. If you use it, you may have to get all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came with the distribution.

Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution. more>>
Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution ("LiveCD") for system administrators, based on Debian testing "etch".
You can mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, monitor networks, rebuild boot records, install other operating systems, and much more.
Finnix includes the latest technology for system administrators, with Linux kernel 2.6, LVM2, encrypted partitions, etc. And above all, Finnix is small; currently the entire distribution is over 300MB, but is dynamically compressed into a 105MB bootable image.
Finnix is not intended for the average desktop user, and does not include any desktops, productivity tools, or sound support, in order to keep distribution size low.
Finnix is freely distributable under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
Main features:
- Finnix is based on Debian "testing"; Knoppix is based on Debian "unstable" and several other repositories.
- Finnix is available as a 105MB ISO; Knoppix is available as a 700MB or 3.5GB ISO (CD/DVD editions).
- Knoppix includes XFree86 and many, many desktop and productivity tools and games; Finnix does not.
- Finnix includes utilities not found in Knoppx, such as LVM2, cryptsetup, cdpr, iftop, irssi, reiser4progs, an OTP calculator, VLAN tools, and the essential robotfindskitten.
- Finnix includes a different Linux kernel than Knoppix; as of this writing, 2.6.13.3 versus 2.6.12, respectively.
- Finnix uses an almost completely reworked initrd, a compressed ROM filesystem with BusyBox; Knoppixs initrd uses a compressed ext2 filesystem with statically compiled tools.
- Knoppix can be installed on a hard drive or use floppies/USB keys for storing personal data; Finnix cannot.
- Finnix can be copied to RAM and run in only 256MB; Knoppix requires at least 1GB.

FreeFont 20060126
FreeFont project aims to provide a set of free outline fonts. more>>
FreeFont project aims to provide a set of free outline (PostScript Type0, TrueType, OpenType...) fonts covering the ISO 10646/Unicode UCS (Universal Character Set).
Why do we need free outline UCS fonts?
A large number of free software users switched from free X11 bitmapped fonts to proprietary Microsoft Truetype fonts, as a) they used to be freely downloaded from Microsoft Typography page, b) they contain a more or less decent subset of the ISO 10646 UCS (Universal Character Set), c) they are high-quality, well hinted scalable Truetype fonts, and d) Freetype, a free high-quality Truetype font renderer is available and has been integrated into the latest release of XFree86, the free X11 server.
Building a dependence on non-free software, even a niche one like fonts, is dangerous. Microsoft Truetype core fonts were never free, they were just costless. Citing the TrueType core fonts for the Web FAQ: You may only redistribute the fonts in their original form (.exe or .sit.hqx) and with their original file name from your Web site or intranet site. You must not supply the fonts, or any derivative fonts based on them, in any form that adds value to commercial products, such as CD-ROM or disk based multimedia programs, application software or utilities. As of August 2002, however, the fonts are not anymore available on the Web, which makes the situation clearer.
Dont there exist any free high-quality outline fonts? Yes, they do. URW++, a German digital typefoundry, released their own version of the 35 Postscript Type 1 core fonts under GPL as their donation to the Ghostscript project. The Wadalab Kanji comittee has produced Type 1 font files with thousands of filigree Japanese glyphs. Yannis Haralambous has drawn beautiful glyphs for the Omega typesetting system. And so on. Scattered around the internet there are numerous other free resources for other national scripts, many of them aiming to be a suitable match for Latin fonts like Times or Helvetica.
Free UCS outline fonts will cover the following character sets:
- ISO 8859 parts 1-15
- CEN MES-3 European Unicode Subset
- IBM/Microsoft code pages 437, 850, 852, 1250, 1252 and more
- Microsoft/Adobe Windows Glyph List 4 (WGL4)
- KOI8-R and KOI8-U
- DEC VT100 graphics symbols
- International Phonetic Alphabet
- Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, Georgian, Ethiopian, Thai and Lao alphabets, including Arabic presentation forms A/B
- Japanese Katakana and Hiragana
- mathematical symbols, including the whole TeX repertoire of symbols
- APL symbols etc.

Independence 6.0.0.8
Independence is not just one of these commercial distributions who have been appearing daily for the last months. more>>
Independence is not just one of these commercial distributions who have been appearing daily for the last months. It aims at being a distribution allowing the users to make hear their voice in distribution design.
It is built by volunteers who no longer accept having an aristocracy of distribution designers providing solutions who have little relation to the problems faced by us, Linux users. It is built by people who dont accept that present distributions time and again neglect two areas who are vital for Linux future: the desktop and the personal computer.
Software included in Independence:
This is the selection of software that we think to be useful. And even those packages that do originate from the RedHat distribution are often modified to serve the end-users needs better.
Here, you will find a short explanation of the packages we provide, that are either a special remake from RedHat packages, or that are not derived from RedHat packages at all - our very own packages.
ClanLib: Game library, I will include ClanBomber with it.
FileRunner: a filemanager reminding Amigas. It can also act as an FTP client.
Giram: Modeller who uses POV as raytracer. Linux is supposed to be fun.
GnoSamba: Makes easier to config Samba
GTk-Perl: used by Independences Gimp
Hermes: provides MMX acceleration to the ClanLib and SDL libraries.
LinPopUp: allows sending and getting WinPopUp messages. For instance a Samba printer server could notify the user when the job is finished, alternatively a Linux user printing through an NT or Samba server will be avle to know when his output has been printed.
MPEG: An MPEG encoder and decoder.
Mesa: 3D libray used by various programs in Indy
OpenPTC: needed for the game libraries.
SDL: Indys second game library.
Timidity++: Midi sound player.
VNC: With it you can display on Linux applications running on Windows or Macs. Or the opposite.
VNC-alien: This is the part of VNC who will run on Windows or Macs.
Visual-Tcl: IDE and GUI builder for TCL/TK. One of Indys goals is to get that Windows people develop on Linux.
Wav-plugin: A Wav plugin for netscape.
XFree86 (Indy): This is obsolete. Indy had a patched XFree supportng more cards than RedHat, now RedHat has cauight up howver Indys XFree had the hooks for running XFCE in addition to Gnoime and KDE. However I dont think I will be able to add XFCE so I will put the new XFree in the updates section (we will use 3.3.6 against RedHats 3.3.5)
Xconfigurator (Indy): The XF86Config built by RedHat assumes the user is smart enough to nevver shutdown the font server. I find that making a distribution so frail to user error is unacceptable, so Indys configurator geerates a config file whho aloows X to be more tolerant of user errors.
aalib: Needed by Indys gimp.
abisuite: Wysywyg word processor able to read MS word files.
acroread: Adobes PDF reader, better quality than xpdf and able to read files xpdf chokes upon.
anacron: Indy does not assume that every Linux user and specially personal isers will kepp their boxes powered up 24 hours a day. Anacron takes care of doing your cron jobs (jobs that are automatically done from time to time) in such a way that your computer can be put on and off whenever you like.
atalkconf: Graphical configurator for netatalk (Apple Talk server).
autofs: (Indy) Indy was the first distrib relieving the user of the chore of mounting CDROMs. This was unacceptable on workstations.
blender: A complete tool for graphical creation.
cbb: Check book balancer. I have seen much too often people complaining they had to keep Windows due to lack of a Quicken like program. We asumme that many Linux users use it at home and that means they need programs in this vein.
cdda2wav: Reading audio data from CDs and making WAv files of it.
cooledit: Nice X editor.
etcskel (Indy): This contains the files wgho will be placed in the home directory of a newly created user. Indy puts some tricks of its own in this files/
gaim: Taliking to people using AOLs instant messaging service.
gdm (Indy): This is specific due to stupid copyright reasons: it displays RedHat logo.
gfcc: Allows easy configuration of masquerading and similar tricks you can do with ipchains. Can be useful in corporations but also for people with two computers linked by a LAN at home
gimp 1.1.14: For the artist sleeping in each user. This version is supposed to be for developers but I found stable and leagues ahead of the old gimp 1.0 shipped in RedHat..
gimpdoc-pdf: This is version 2 of the manual. RedHat uses HTML for the Gimp manual, Indys uses PDF due to the far graeter quality of the output. In addition some chapters of the manual would not display on Netscape unless you had _at least_ 64 megs of memory.
gltt: This is a library who will no longer be needed after we drop mooonlight, but the demo is so nice I will keep it in the distrib hoping people will create programs with it.
gnomeicu: ICQ client.
gphoto: Downloading images from electronic cameras and making some common manipulatins like removing the red eyes effect.
grip: CD player and ripper.
gtk--: C++ interface for GTK+
gxtar: A Gnome front end to tar, gzip, bzip2 archives.
ibtk: For ATI TV cards.
initscripts (Indy): Indy provides for automatic activation of network daemons when a PPP link is brought up. Also Indy is smarter and more robust than RedHAt respective to an uninstalled gdm, kdm. These tricks and perhaps some more are provded through this packege.
install-sendmail: Easy configuration of sendmail. We want the user being able to ask for help if something goes wrong.
kdebase (Indy): Again there is alittle Indy trick making things easier for the user.
kdevelop: IDE for UNix. If I have tiime to build it we will ship Code Crusader instead
killustrator: I wanted a vector drawing program but I still doubt between this and sketch. Anyone willing to compare them?
klyx: Nearly wysywyg word processor.
knetmon: You really need it if you have windows boxes around you. People who have never been in this situation include Gniomba instead. :-)
kvoice: Voice utility for modems
kwintv: Watch TV
lesstif: Library replcng Motif. Intended for Ted but some of the Motif apps we have could be recompiled with it.
libwmf: needed for abisuite.
lilo (Indy): Indys LILO tells you how to get out of trouble.
lincity: Game.
lokkit: Instant protection against the scum of the Internet. Indy does not assume the user has an experienced sysadmin at hand or is sitting behind a firewall: we have heard of something called home users.
loser: Game. Far too fast when the box has been optimized by Cobra.
lpe: A reasonable editor with online help for people who have to fix a box before having time to learn VI. Indys installs it in a such way it is available in the most desperate situations.
<<lessIt is built by volunteers who no longer accept having an aristocracy of distribution designers providing solutions who have little relation to the problems faced by us, Linux users.
Timidity++: Midi sound player.
VNC: With it you can display on Linux applications running on Windows or Macs. Or the opposite.
VNC-alien: This is the part of VNC who will run on Windows or Macs.

x-fontperf 1.1
x-fontperf is a small utility to measure X11 font loading time. more>>
x-fontperf is a small utility to measure font rendering/loading time in an x11 environment. Originally intended to see if there is any notable performance difference between a separate font server and local font rendering.
It actually does three different tests:
1) Loading the same font several times
Gives you an average loading time for this particular font. If you use a font already in use in your x-session this should be really quick as this font will be reused and not actually loaded again (cached)
2) Loading the same font in different sizes (incrementing)
Default is from 6 to 144 pixel. Interesting to see how rendering time increases with font size (see option -v)
3) Loading all available fonts
This should give you a good estimate on average fontloading time. Also a good test to stress your system and check if all fonts are loadable (see option -e)
Sample output:
x-fontperf -v
x-fontperf: Copyright (c) Holger Pfaff - http://pfaff.ws
x-fontperf: version 1.1 from 26-Mar-2004
x-fontperf: connected to server: :0.0
x-fontperf: server vendor: Gentoo Linux (XFree86 4.3.0, revision r3)
x-fontperf: vendor release: 40300000
x-fontperf: total of 6406 fonts found
x-fontperf: basefont: -*-helvetica-*-*-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
x-fontperf: loading basefont 100 times ... 6292 usec 62 usec/font
x-fontperf: loading font from pixel size 6 to 144 ... 2977820 usec 21578 usec/font
x-fontperf: loading all 6406 available fonts ... 34965472 usec 5458 usec/font
Usage:
Usage: x-fontperf ...
-display X-display to use
-v Increase verbosity (may falsify results)
-e Show errors during tests
-n Number of iterations for test 1 [100]
-min Minimum pixel size for test 2 [6]
-max Maximum pixel size for test 2 [144]
-foundry Foundry of font [*]
-family Family of font [helvetica]
-weight Weight of font [*]
-slant Slant of font [*]
-setwidth Set width of font [*]
-addstyle Additional style of font [*]
-pixelsize Pixel size of font [12]
-pointsize Point size of font [*]
-resolutionX X resolution of font [*]
-resolutionY Y resolution of font [*]
-spacing Spacing of font [*]
-avgwidth Average width of font [*]
-registry Registry of font [iso8859]
-encoding Encoding of font [1]
Verbosity can be increased in three steps by specifying -v several times. No-
tation -vvv is not supported. Use -v -v -v. Errors opening fonts are not shown
by default. Use -e to see them.
-n specifies the number of iterations for test 1. The default of 100 (shown in
brackets) should be ok for most systems. Increase/decrease values for fast/slow
systems
-min/-max specifies the minimum/maximum pixel size for test 2. Pixel sizes are
incremented by one.
The last block of arguments is for specifying the basefont to use for tests 1
and 2. These follow the standard x11 font naming scheme. Again: defaults are
shown in brackets.
Enhancements:
- first public version 1.0

camsource 0.7.0
camsource project grabs images from a video4linux device and makes them available to various plugins for processing or handling. more>>
camsource project grabs images from a video4linux device and makes them available to various plugins for processing or handling. It features a modularized and multithreaded design to offer a large amount of flexibility.
A server plugin runs in its own thread, which makes it possible to use the same grabbed frame for several purposes at the same time.
There are also filter plugins, which can be daisychained to create useful and no-so-useful effects in images. The configuration happens through an xml config file, hopefully making configuring camsource an easy task.
Main features:
- The video4linux input plugin. This functionality was built into camsource in versions 0.6.0 and earlier, but has been modularized in 0.7.0 and up. New in 0.7.0 is also the capability to automatically adjust the cameras brightness level (thanks to Nigel Roberts and Stefan Meyer).
- A plugin "wc_serv" providing compatibility with webcam_server 0.30. You can use its java applet to view the image stream from this plugin.
- A http mini-server plugin "http", which can serve the current still frame to a web browser, as well as serve a Mozilla/Netscape compatible multipart jpeg stream. This stream can be viewed without plugins in said browsers, or with a java applet such as Cambozola in any browser (read: IE). This multipart jpeg stream is compatible to what Camserv 0.5.0 produces. Camserv also includes a javascript snippet to turn a still image into an animation. The http server also supports basic http authentication, so you can password-protect those important live pictures (new in 0.7.0).
- A "filewrite" module, which periodically saves a new snapshot jpeg to a local file.
- The "ftpup" module, which works like the filewrite module, only that the snapshot is uploaded to an ftp site.
- The "flip" image filter, which lets you flip an image horizontally or vertically. Useful if your webcam produces mirrored images like mine.
- The "resize" image filter, doing simple nearest-neighbor image resizing. The idea is to make the hardware grab images at the maximum size, and use the resize filter to scale the image down to the required size. This lets you create several versions of the same image stream, at different sizes.
- An image filter capable of rotating the image left or right by 90 degrees. If you want to rotate the image by 180 degrees, use the "flip" filter.
- A text overlay module, which is able to display either a fixed text (possibly containing a timestamp) in the image, or read the text to display from a local file or from a commands stdout.
- In case your camera produces frames in an BGR palette while the driver detects an RGB palette (or the other way round, haw haw), theres the "rgbbgr" filter to fix this. Also includes the "bw" filter to convert a color image to grayscale.
- (New in 0.7.0) A module to feed the current image data back to a vloopback device. This feature should still be considered experimental. Credits go to Cyril Rocheteau for this.
- (New in 0.7.0) An x11/xwd input plugin. This lets you use an x11 display as an input source to camsource, making it possible to serve live screenshots to viewers, possibly even as a live stream. When combined with the http authentication feature of the http module, you could use this to see whats going on on your desktop at home from anywhere in the world. The external "xwd" program is required to do this though (which is part of the core xfree86 distribution).

Featherweight Linux 1.3
Featherweight Linux is a Live-CD installable Linux distribution that is remastered from Feather Linux. more>>
Featherweight Linux is my Live-CD installable Linux distribution that I remastered from Feather Linux, which is built on knoppix technology. Youll find some great people over at Feather and you can find some good documentation there.
Their goal is to make a light and fast Linux with a very small footprint that can be installed on USB pen drives and such. My goal is a bit different. I want a full featured Linux that isnt bloated with a kazillion gigs of crap that Ill never use. I want a small footprint that is light and fast, even on older machines, but still carries a knockout punch.
So I took Feather and stripped out a bunch of apps that I never even thought of using. I wanted to make an easy to understand desktop that was compatible and easily configurable with the latest apps being developed, so I removed all of the window managers and installed a minimal KDE 3.3 desktop.
I included the most popular internet apps like the Mozilla Suite complete with plugins, Gaim, Gftp etc... I added full printer support and wifi support. In my test environment, it automatically detects and configures both my network printer (HP PSC 1210)and my linksys wireless card. Hopefully, itll do the same for you. It is debian based so I installed Synaptic for easy upgrading and totally FREE software management. Customizing your own system with the software that you want is only a few clicks away.
In its current state, the ISO is about 240mb and the HDD install is about 700mb, which is about 1/4 of all the other overweight distros out there. Once you install it, you can install OpenOffice and a bunch of other stuff if you need it, but I just wanted to make a good solid functional base so you can build your own system if you want.
Featherweight is intended for novice users with "some" linux experience, intermediate users, and experienced linux users alike. It has a pretty straight forward install but you should know linux and HDD partitioning basics before trying to install it.
Packages included are:
- aalib1 1.4p5-22 ascii art library
- abcde 2.2.3-1 A Better CD Encoder
- acpi 0.07-1 displays information on ACPI devices
- adduser 3.52 Add and remove users and groups

Enhancements:
- Ive upgraded e2fsprogs and e2fslibs as well as some other critical core files.
- I updated the apt sources and added abiword and acroread, as well as the acroread mozilla plugin, and I added kppp.
- I upgraded samba and switched the quick start konqueror and kde help buttons with a mozilla button and a konsole button.
- I fixed the install script where some folks were getting a blank screen after installation and added a grub install script for easy installation of grub after the initial install.
- The total installed size is now about 800mb.
<<lessTheir goal is to make a light and fast Linux with a very small footprint that can be installed on USB pen drives and such.
