X-Chat NewsWindow 1.0
X-Chat NewsWindow is a perl script for X-Chat. more>>
X-Chat NewsWindow is a perl script for X-Chat (or X-Chat Aqua) implements one of those annoying announcer scripts that announce your currently playing audio track in iTunes or your current audio or video track in VLC to your IRC channel because you feel for some reason that everyone wants to know.
I basically consider this script to be a better counterattack than just abusing the annoying mIRC users and getting the usual ignorant "pfft. sif mac" response. Since VLCs meta-data support leaves a bit to be desired, it obtains the album name from the containing folders name and the track name from the filename (minus the extension). This works quite well if you have a well labelled music collection. Note: If you use this script, exercise discretion. Not everyone cares what youre listening to.
To use this, you must first turn on logging in VLC. To do this, open VLCs preferences, and under the "Interface > Control Interfaces" preference page, tick the "File Logging" option. Then under the "Interface > Control Interfaces > Logging" page, enter "/tmp/vlc_log.txt" as the log filename. You can choose a different name or location if you wish, but if you do, change the path definition to it in the vlc_announce function below. You may have to choose the "Add Interface > Debug Logging" menu option (under the VLC menu) if VLC hasnt already turned it on via the preferences change.

Voodoo chat 1.0
Voc is a stream-chat engine which is designed to work on high-loaded chat-servers. more>>
Voc is a stream-chat engine which is designed to work on high-loaded chat-servers. It is written in PHP, but uses Perl or C++ for Voc-daemon -- the special program to handle multiple user-connections. With Voc you can make a chat that will serve many conversations simultanously. And its html-based, so your chatters can use it from almost any browser.
The Voc-engine includes a lot of features so it will be interested not only for a big chat owners.
Whats so special about Voc-engine?
There are 2 classes of html-chats. Classic-type, with refreshing messages-window, And stream-type.
Refresh-type is known to everybody, so lets think about streams. What is the common way to introduce such functionality? Webmasters make cgi-script (PHP-script, jsp-srcpt, e.t.c) which checks for new messages every second (2,3...) and prints something to the client. Of course, you need one instance of the script for each client. Now calculate how many data-requests you need to process every second... At least two for each client -- get messages, get users-list.
Also dont forget about memory and CPU usage. For instance, if you have PHP-scripts and PHP is compiled as an Apache-module, be ready to spend 5 Mbytes of memory and 0.1-1% of CPU for each client (only for messages-window).Multiple it to number of users online.
Do you still want to use such scripts?
Is there any solutions? I guess, yes -- try Voodoo chat. It uses Perl- or C++-daemon which processes users-requests to a messages list. And you need just one daemon for all clients. This daemon takes approx. 10 Mbytes of memory for 100 users. CPU usage is also small (of course it depends on your CPU, i.e. for 100 users online it is 0.5% of Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz). Do you see the difference now?
Main features:
- Daemon-stream type (recommended)
- Classic-type (with refreshes)
- PHP-stream script (read text above and use this type only when you have less then 20 simultaneous visitors and cannot use daemon-type)
- JavaScript stream-emulation (refreshing hidden frame which just add text to the main message-window)
- Themes-support. You can use one of exisitng designes, or easily create your own
- rooms
- private messages
- ignoring
- you can enable to use bold, italic, underlined messages
- inline images
- personal info-page with photo for registered users
- avatars
- internal mini-mail system
- status (online/offline/not available/dont disturb)
- web-indicator (see example at the left)
- nick & string highlighing for personal messages
- anti-flood
- messages and ban/unban logging
- limits for maximum number of users and maximum number of users from one ip (anti-nick-flooding)
- graphical statistic, example
- admin-zone to manage the chat
- moderator-levels for registered users, so you can give someone permissions to ban/unban users, change rooms-info, edit/delete registered users

ChaNT 1.0.1
ChaNT is a flexible, powerful, cross-browser and easy to use open source web-based chat system written in PHP and JavaScript. more>>
ChaNT is a flexible, powerful, cross-browser and easy to use open source web-based chat system written in PHP and JavaScript. Support for BBCode, 3D Animated Smileys with a IM like toolbar for formatting your chat messages. This project does not require any browser plugins like Java or Flash. Also it not requires MySQL, all data stored in ordinary files.
ChaNT included privacy features such as traffic encryption(client-server-client) and client side password hashing. It have powerful admin control panel and can integrated with many forums and CMS. ChaNT supports all major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Mozilla. It has a minimalistic and an elegant user interface which looks and feels a lot like a IM desktop application, since it uses AJAX. ChaNT is very fast, light weight and makes chatting more fun.
You can bookmark this page and return at any time to find the latest ChaNT updates as they`re released.
How does it work?
The ChaNT client side functioning on JavaScript XMLHttpRequest object to asynchronously communicate with the server-side. Server response parsed and used to update the chat window content. By generating the HTML locally within the browser, and only bringing down JavaScript calls and the actual data, AJAX web pages can appear to load relatively quickly since the payload coming down is much smaller in size.

GYach Enhanced 1.0.7
Gyach Enhanced is currently the most feature-rich Yahoo! client for Linux operating systems. more>>
Gyach Enhanced (Gyach-E) and pY! Voice Chat. Gyach Enhanced is currently the most feature-rich Yahoo! client for Linux operating systems.
It is an unofficial fork of the original Gyach, and supports almost all of the features you would expect to find on the official Windows Yahoo! client: Voice chat, webcams, faders, nicknames, audibles, avatars, display images, and more.
Yet, it remains very light-weight and memory-friendly. Gyach Enhanced, pY! Voice Chat, and the Gyach-E Webcam Utilities all use Gtk-2 for their user interfaces (Gtk-2 2.0.6 or better required).
Gyach Enhanced is intended to be a deliberate departure from the growing trend of multi-protocol/multi-platform messaging and chat clients which often suffer from half-baked or non-existent support for major features such as voice, webcams, privacy, security, and spam control, and generally offer slower adoption of new protocol features that Windows users have access to almost immediately with each new Y! Messenger release. Gyach Enhanced is never intended to be a multi-protocol application (i.e., not intended for connecting to MSN, AIM, etc.) as I would rather use a client that handles one messaging system and handles it well, than a client that handles only the basics on several systems.
Gyach-E is about PROGRESS: Being among the first, not the last, to implement support for new features. Lately, Gyach Enhanced has been adopting new features at an alarming rate, as the development has not been bogged down with a need to rewrite/recompile code for Windows and other operating systems or a need to delay the addition of new features for fear of its affects on other protocols plugins. In other words: New features are added quickly because I do not have to worry if something will work on Windows or if the new addition will break MSN support...Gyach Enhanced just worries about Yahoo! on Linux: Thats it. "One protocol, one OS...done well.". Gyach Enhanced is also the first Yahoo application for Linux with support for the vast majority of the new features added to the Windows Y! Messenger 6: Display Images in the PM window, Avatars, Audibles, and Stealth Settings.
While other applications prefer to focus on things such as themeable smileys...Gyach Enhanced is focused on USEFUL features such as webcam support, voice chat, controlling spam (about 75-95% effective), and doing the best it can to prevent you from being booted, bombed, flooded, and stalked. Gyach-E is known to survive tons of different boot codes and is constantly being patched to defend against new ones as I find out about them. For example, when support for Audibles was added to Gyach-E, I also anticipated that people would eventually start using Audibles to flood people and send Audible spam, so I also implemented measures to help defend against these types of abuse.
This is part of the concept behind Gyach-E: Allow the user to enjoy the latest features while containing and minimizing any damage that can be caused by people abusing the new features. The program responds intelligently to boot attacks by temporarily shutting down sound events and dialog boxes to avoid X and sound card-related crashes, controlling the flow of incoming network packets, minimizing CPU usage during an attack, auto-ignoring users as necessary, monitoring and logging suspcious events, and sometimes, even booting the bot/person thats trying to boot you.
Together with pY! Voice Chat, the Gyach-E Webcam utilities, and a few light-weight plugins (including encryption support), Gyach Enhanced is the most advanced, feature-rich Linux client for Yahoo! thus far. It is the first (and, to my knowledge, the ONLY) Linux Y! client that supports both voice chat and webcams (sending and receiving.)

AjaxChat 1.2
AjaxChat is a simple, fast, and customizable chat server that uses Ajax. more>>
AjaxChat is a simple, fast, and customizable chat server that uses Ajax to smoothly refresh and display the chat zone and the nickname zone.
AjaxChat project supports customized CSS stylesheets and plugins.
Online chat is a generic term for what are now mostly known as instant messaging applications-computer programs that enable two-way typing to connect users to each other.
However, there are net dating systems and other online services that do not use these applications to provide chat facilities, e.g., Delphi, often relying on HTTP-based protocols instead. Sometimes these are called a chat room or chat extending the physical metaphors of sites and magazines which many web services exploit.
Today there are many chat rooms, some incorporating instant messaging features without having to install additional chat software. These chatrooms often have friend finders built in.
Some of these systems also provide telephone voice mail access. These are usually known generically as just chat systems.
A chat log is a record of a chat. Sometimes this is put on the web.
The earliest online chat system widely used was probably the Unix talk facility. The earliest one in general use was likely the French Minitel. During the 1980s, online chat was made available on CompuServe and DDial servers, and later on GEnie. In 1988, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) protocol, an instant messaging tool, was developed and became the de-facto standard for online chat.
Enhancements:
- An optimized chat weight, a simplified initialization process, and simplified theme creation.

Xphone is made for users who intend to hook their modem up to external speakers or their sound card and use it as a speaker . more>>
Xphone is made for users who intend to hook their modem up to external speakers or their sound card and use it as a speaker .
By default you get a half duplex speaker phone. Try full duplex at your own risk.
If it locks up type killall chat at a prompt to try to get back.
Also if it locks up try running minicom and quitting it without resetting the modem to initialize the serial port.
The preferences menu has some good facilities to play with.
Select either half duplex or full duplex:
Half duplex doesnt seem to have any problems. Full duplex appears to only work on a few modems and it may lock yours up. More importantly full duplex may pop your speakers.
If yours locks up execute "killall chat" at a command line to get back.
Select a modem device:
The serial device your modem is connected to: (/dev/modem)
Select a chat command:
Xphone uses chat syntax to communicate with the modem. Set this to whatever your chat command is (/usr/sbin/chat). Some versions of chat have a -S flag which may improve serial port performance so you can also try "/usr/sbin/chat -S".
Compilation notes:
Libc6 users can build it by typing make in this directory. The standalone executable is dropped in xphone/
Hacks and problems:
Full duplex doesnt work on my modem. Serial port interface sometimes doesnt happen. GUI toolkit cant close sockets to the X server.
Enhancements:
- Fix hang on startup because the default volume setting was out of range.

Perl Chat 0.1.1
http://perlchat.sourceforge.net more>>
Perl Chat is a project that consists of a client and a server, both written in perl.
The goal of this project is to create a chat server that can be used on smaller networks such as a college campus or a business network.
Both the client and the server are written in Perl, and the client uses the Tk module to generate its GUI.
Installation:
First of all you need a working version of Perl. Preferably 5.6 but 5.005X should also work fine. For versions of Perl Chat < 0.1.0 you will need to compile Perl with Threads. (Keep in mind that Threads are still experimental) I designed this program with Perl 5.6.0 which can be found HERE.
You will need to read the installation instructions to compile it with Threads. I advise anyone who is doing this to install this new version of perl into /usr/local/ so as to not overwrite your old perl. Then by changing the first line of the script you can toggle between the different installs of perl.

Then by changing the first line of the script you can toggle between the different installs of perl.

wchat 1.2.6
wchat is a telnet-based Chat Server written in the C language. more>>
wchat is a telnet-based Chat Server written in the C language. It was originally based on chatC code, but then expanded to be a fully functional chat environment. wchat is designed to use minimal cpu or memory resources, and be a modular high-level code base. What this means is all low-level functions are written in separate libraries which wchat uses them.
This allows any additions or changes to the "look and feel" of the chat to be very simple and straight forward. wchat is an extremely stable and solid base from which to build a chat environment around. This is not a web chat, but a telnet chat server usually connected to via clients such as tinyfugue, gmud, CRT, etc.
Main features:
- System configurable network options (listen size, max user, etc.)
- Full ANSI color support
- Multiple chat channels
- Fully configurable handle with color support in handle
- Idle times
- System uptime information
- Basic login information
- message timestamps
- User accounts
- guest, normal, and admin user levels
- /admin command for admins
