Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. more>>
Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris.
Main features:
Binary Compatibility
- Loads Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP, Windows 3.x and DOS programs and libraries
- Win32 compatible memory layout, exception handling, threads and processes
- Designed for POSIX compatible operatings systems (eg. Linux and FreeBSD)
- ``bug-for-bug compatibility with Windows
Graphics
- X11-based graphics allows remote display to any X terminal
- X11, TrueType (.ttf/.ttc) and Windows Bitmap (.fon) Fonts
- DirectX support for games (limited Direct3D support)
- Printing via PostScript driver or legacy native Win16 printer drivers
- Enhanced Metafile (EMF) and Windows Metafile (WMF) driver
- Desktop-in-a-box or mixable windows

Allows Windows program to interface with:
- Sound devices via ALSA, OSS, ARTS, JACK, and libaudio etc
- Multi-lingual keyboards and CJK input method support via XIM
- Modems, serial devices
- Networks (TCP/IP and IPX)
- ASPI Scanners
- Windows Tablets via XInput (eg. Wacom)
Wine API
- Designed for source and binary compatibility with Win32 code
- Win32 API test suite to ensure compatibility
- Compilable on a wide range of C compilers
- Permits mixing of Win32 and POSIX code
- Permits mixing of ELF (.so) and PE (.dll/.exe) binaries in one address space
- Win32 compatible header files
- Automatically generated API documentation
- Resource compiler
- Message compiler
- IDL compiler
- extensive Unicode support
- Internationalization -- Wine supports 16 languages
- Built-in debugger and configurable trace messages
- External memory checker support using Valgrind
- Sample programs
Enhancements:
- Direct3D support on top of WGL instead of GLX for better portability.
- Many DirectSound fixes.
- Still more gdiplus functions.
- Many crypt32 improvements.
- Lots of bug fixes.

TkWiCe 0.9

TkWiCe 0.9

TkWiCe is a free wine cellar software. more>>
TkWiCe is a free wine cellar software. As it is written in native Tcl/Tk, youve got a real chance to use it on any operating system with that interpreter on it (you can get Tcl/Tk for any Unix like Mac OS X, Linux, *BSD, AIX, HP-UX or Solaris as well as for PowerPC and Windows).
If you want to get a fast overview about your bottles (perhaps youve got to choose one?), this might be what you are looking for.
If youre more interested in writing intellectual tasting notes take a wordprocessor like LyX or OpenOffice instead. And if 100 points are the most important thing to you, please choose other points of interest than wine (and bestow the saved money). Such things never will be added to this software:
Aims
- Focus is on pleasure, not on charts.
- Function conquers eyecandy.
- Own plain text files for each wine.
- Everything about one wine fits on 1024x768 pixel at once.
- Old computers are new enough.
- No more dependencies than Tcl/Tk (not: operating system).
- Free (means: liberty *and* free of charge).
- Dont replace wine literature (as commercial solutions try).
Enhancements:
- Bugfixes in startup, the cellar book/history window, and the country selection buttons in the main window.

Wine-doors is an application designed to assist users in obtaining, installing, uninstalling and working around the caveats associated with wine applications.

Although wine doors is intended to be a replacement for winetools it is not limited to release cycles for the applications available to install, instead a web service will be provided, this web service will serve XML Pack Lists and Application Packs as well as various other resources.

Using a web service to connect users to applications means the service can be community managed thus splitting application installation and configuration from the user interface used to install the applications.

arianne 0.12

arianne 0.12

arianne is a multiplayer online game engine project. more>>
Arianne is a multiplayer online games framework and engine to develop turn based and real time games.

It provides a simple way of creating games on a portable and robust server architecture. The server is coded in Java and uses Python for your game description, provides a MySQL backend and uses an UDP transport channel to communicate with dozens of players.

Our reference client engines are coded using Java and the C language in order to achieve maximum portability.

Arianne has been in development since 1999 and has evolved from a tiny application written in pseudo-C++ to a powerful, expandable but simple server framework, running on the Java platform, and a portable client framework, written in bare C to allow total portability of ariannes clients. Ariannes server is totally client agnostic.

Since the beginning, the key concept at the heart of Ariannes development has been KISS: Keep it simple, stupid!

Arianne games are playable. It now hosts several games:

* a multiplayer Gladiators fighting game
* a multiplayer Pacman game

All our efforts are supported by ariannes server: Marauroa.

Marauroa is completely written in Java using a multithreaded server architecture with a UDP oriented network protocol, a MySQL based persistence engine and a flexible game system. The game system is totally expandable and modifiable by game developers and is able to run Python scripts defining the games rules.

Marauroa is based on a design philosophy we called Action/Perception. Each turn a perception is send to the clients explaining what they currently perceive. Clients can ask the server to perform any action in their name using actions. Marauroa is totally game agnostic and makes very little assumptions about what are you trying to do, allowing a great freedom to create any game type.

Bugs are facts of life, they just happen.

On Arianne we care about code quality so code is fully tested using Test Units with JUnit and cppunit, so all modules are tested for most common cases, allowing a better quality software to be deployed.

The name originated from the Greek name Ariadne. (Latin; Arianna and from French; Arianne). Ariadne is a famous character in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of King Minos of Crete and she was in love with Theseus, the Athenian hero who killed the Minotaur ( a half human, half bull creature).

Theseus married her, however, then later left her alone on the island of Naxos. Ariadne later married Dionisos the God of Wine. The name Ariadne originates from the ancient Greek words ari which means intelligent and adnis which means pure (as in a virgin). Hence, the daughters of the Romans and Greeks where often called by this name.

silverflux 0.6.0

silverflux 0.6.0

silverflux allows you to easily install and manage commercial games on your GNU/Linux system. more>>
silverflux allows you to easily install and manage commercial games on your GNU/Linux system. Only games with available GNU/Linux native binaries are supported at this time, but extensions for running games under wine/cedega/dosbox are planned.
silverflux automagically installs, downloads patches, and configures games without any required user intervention. silverflux project is a truely simplified game management system.
The intended audience for this software includes desktop as well as advanced end users.
silverflux was created to fill in the last linux gaming deficiency; the interface between the user and the system. silverflux provides the glue that prevents the user from fumbling with ill-concieved and clumsy game installers (both windows and linux native).
Instead an advanced user figures out how an optimal installation works then creates an automated script; thus simplifying the installation process for everyone. This is especially important for enabling games on wine where config files often need to be tweaked manually. everyone benefits.
Installation:
1. extract the archive
$ tar zxvf silverflux-0.6.0.tar.gz
2. add silverflux binaries to your path (this is a required step). you will want to add this path to the end of your ~/.bashrc file so you wont have to type this all the time.
$ PATH="$PATH:$PWD/silverflux-0.6.0/bin"
3. start the gui
$ silverflux-gui
Enhancements:
- A lot of work has been done on code clean-up.
- Various important features have been finalized.
- A simple Python-based GUI interface is now available.

ppsei 0.1

ppsei 0.1

ppsei is a simple command line program, which tries to extract images from Microsoft PowerPoint documents. more>>
ppsei short from PPS Extract Images is a simple command line program, which tries to extract images from Microsoft PowerPoint documents (PPS/PPT).

Because i get a lot of mails with attached PPS/PPT in, containing some nice images (about universe, about pretty girls, etc). The sender people are using this file format as an image-container, or image-encapsulator.

They could use tar/zip/..., but somehow PPS is the general. On *nix systems only resource-consume application can handle this file formats (openoffice, wine + win.exe), so i decided to write this tool.

Currently only JPEG and PNG files can be extracted. Because the PPS file format is not so well-documented as the gnumeric :-), there is no guarantee, that all images will be grabbed correctly. But the experience is, that it works!

As i said, this is a command line program: you can call it from SHELL (or from favorite email software). It takes only the PPS file(s) as argument, and will extract all detected images to the current directory:

$ ppsei universe.pps beauty-islands.ppt
...
$ gqview (start here some image viewer application, to see the result)

Makepack 0.2.0

Makepack 0.2.0

Makepack project is a Makefile which together with a settings file and some simple rule files are able to compile software. more>>
Makepack project is a Makefile which together with a settings file and some simple rule files are able to download, compile and install software for your Slackware installation.

As the installation is done using checkinstall a Slackware package is also created at the same time.

The big strenght of makepack is that it has mechanisms to keep track of dependencies when downloading and installing software.

Exemple:

$ make list

Numeric: Python package for scientific computing
SDL_image: Image file loading library
SDL_mixer: Sample multi-channel audio mixer library.
SDL_ttf: Library for using TrueType fonts in SDL applications.
angrydd: Angry, Drunken Dwarves, falling blocks puzzle game
atlas: Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software (ATLAS)
easytag: graphical (gtk) mp3 id3 tag editor
flac: library for Free Lossless Audio Codec
id3lib: library for mp3 id3 tags
ms-sys: Utility for writing microsoft compatible boot records
numpy: Python package for scientific computing
pygame: A set of Python modules designed for writing games
qemu: Generic processor emulator
smpeg: SDL MPEG Player Library

Whats New in This Release:

Upgraded the following rules:
MPlayer to version 1.0rc1

gpgme to version 1.1.4
gphoto2 to version 2.3.1
jack to version 0.103.0
kqemu to version 1.3.0pre9, also changed dependencies so that
kqemu now depends on qemu instead of qemu depending on
kqemu. This might make sense for future versions of qemu
which might use kvm instead of kqemu.
qemu to version 0.9.0, qemu will not compile with gcc 4 which is
included with Slackware 12. Also, once compiled it does not
seem very stable.
lame to version 3.97
libdv to version 1.0.0
libdvdread to version 0.9.7
libggi to version 2.2.2
libgphoto2 to version 2.3.1

Wildcards in REMOVE_FROM_PACKAGE now also works with newer
versions of tar.
This version of makepack is supposed to work with
Slackware 12. Unfortunately ddd does not compile on
Slackware 12 because of broken header files from X.org or
lesstif. If you really want ddd on Slackware 12 there are
instructions out there on how to modify those header files.

libkarma 0.1.0

libkarma 0.1.0

libkarma is a C library for managing the Rio Karma via TCP/IP. more>>
libkarma is a C library for managing the Rio Karma via TCP/IP. libkarma library supports all basic protocol commands and some advanced functions on top of these, like caching of the Rio database.
There are two proof-of-concept tools included, riocp and chprop. riocp can be used to upload files to the Karma.
The Rio Karma is a small mp3 player, which supports the music formats ogg vorbis, flac, mp3, wave and wma.
Moreover, it has an ethernet port which is in my opinion a major advantage compared to similar players.
...just plug it into your network, use the java tool and...ehrm...what? Java?
I dont want to use Java for copying my newest CD to the Karma because that small java-application even needs 15 seconds to start up. Sure, i could try the software for usb2, but then i would have to install Wine.
Thats why i began to implement the networking protocol in C - libkarma was born.
Theres no documentation of the API, yet. Just examine the header files and the sample applications riocp and chprop, which are included in the package. If you want to learn more about the protocol which is used, go to karmalib.sf.net or PearlLib.
libkarma depends on iconv and riocp on libFLAC/libvorbisfile. Its open source and licensed under the GPLv2.
libkarma allows developers to do the following:
- login (karma.h)
- read, write and delete music or data files (karma.h)
- read and write file information (karma.h+properties.h)
- write music or taxi files with one function, including setting all metadata(rio_rw.h)
Enhancements:
- This release fixes two resource leaks and some smaller bugs.
- libkarma can be built on OS X properly now.
- Trailing whitespaces in music tags will be trimmed for the rio db.
- The signature of the function lk_properties_cache_obsolete() was changed.

Ark Linux Live 2007.1

Ark Linux Live 2007.1

Ark Linux Live is a Live CD edition of Ark Linux. more>>
Ark Linux Live is a Live CD edition of Ark Linux. Ark Linux is a beginner-friendly Linux distribution meant primarily for desktop use.
The Ark Linux team is pleased to announce the release of a first version of Ark Linux Live, a Live CD version of the Ark Linux operating system.
Ark Linux Live is designed to be as close to the "normal" version of Ark Linux as possible - and is built from the same source code.
There are a couple of known problems with this CD image, most notably non-English languages are not working in non-KDE applications, and the kernel spews some [harmless but dangerous looking] error messages at bootup. These (and other bugs that will possibly show up) will be fixed before the release of Ark Linux Live 2006.1.
The primary uses of a Live CD are:
- Recovering a normal system after a big hardware or software failure (Ark Linux will launch a special live CD for this purpose later, with more recovery tools and fewer other tools)
- Checking the system out without any risk
- Showing others what Linux is like, on their own hardware
- Taking your favorite operating system with you - e.g. to get on the net with Linux even if youre on vacation and the only internet cafe in town is a Microsoft shop
While it is possible to use Ark Linux Live as your primary operating system, that is not recommended - use Ark Linux Home instead.
Ark Linux is a Linux distribution designed especially for desktop use, primarily for people without prior Linux experience. Ark Linuxs main goal is ease of use, and the inclusion of many tools end users will need.
Ark Linux is fully Open Source and Free Software, meaning, basically, you can freely redistribute it in both modified and unmodified form.
Enhancements:
- The Ark Linux team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Ark Linux 2007.1, the latest version of its multi-purpose desktop operating system. Ark Linux can be used for office/school work, desktop publishing, graphics, multimedia entertainment/editing, gaming, software development, and more.
Ark Linux is very adaptable and responsive to the users needs without being overly complicated and/or bloated or difficult to install (all a basic installation takes is 3 mouse clicks). For a more customized install, use the expert mode, which makes it possible to manually set up the partitions you wish to install Ark Linux into.
There have been many more changes since the 2006.1 release - all components have been updated to current versions. For example, Ark Linux 2007.1 includes the KDE 3.5.7 desktop, the OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 office suite and the Amarok music player 1.4.7. It also includes the latest underlying technologies such as Linux kernel 2.6.22.3, glibc 2.6.1, and has been built completely with gcc 4.2.1, resulting in a faster system and quicker response times.
A new and better integrated version of the wine Windows emulator makes it possible to run more Windows applications on Linux than before.
In addition to this, hardware detection has been improved, many new drivers are included, support for encrypted wireless networks has been improved and many additional applications and games have been added to the software repository.
We also have good news for developers and OEMs: The Ark Linux build system has been extended to allow customized builds of both Ark Linux and Ark Linux Live including your packages of choice - making it easier than ever to build your own Linux distribution. All details on the new build system can be found at http://wiki.arklinux.org/index.php/Customized_Ark_Linux_CDs-.
Ark Linux 2007.1 and various add-on CDs can be downloaded at http://www.arklinux.org/. Free live support is available using the web chat at http://www.arklinux.org/content/en/Live+Support
