NINJAM 0.01a

NINJAM 0.01a

NINJAM is a Realtime Music Collaboration Software. more>>
NINJAM is a program to allow people to make real music together via the Internet. Every participant can hear every other participant. Each user can also tweak their personal mix to his or her liking. NINJAM is cross-platform, with clients available for Mac OS X and Windows.

NINJAM uses compressed audio which allows it to work with any instrument or combination of instruments. You can sing, play a real piano, play a real saxophone, play a real guitar with whatever effects and guitar amplifier you want, anything. If your computer can record it, then you can jam with it (as opposed to MIDI-only systems that automatically preclude any kind of natural audio collaboration1).

Since the inherent latency of the Internet prevents true realtime synchronization of the jam2, and playing with latency is weird (and often uncomfortable), NINJAM provides a solution by making latency (and the weirdness) much longer.

Latency in NINJAM is measured in measures, and thats what makes it interesting. The NINJAM client records and streams synchronized intervals of music between participants. Just as the interval finishes recording, it begins playing on everyone elses client. So when you play through an interval, youre playing along with the previous interval of everybody else, and theyre playing along with your previous interval. If this sounds pretty bizarre, it sort of is, until you get used to it, then it becomes pretty natural. In many ways, it can be more forgiving than a normal jam, because mistakes propagate differently.

Part tool, part toy, NINJAM is designed with an emphasis on musical experimentation and expression.

How does NINJAM work?

NINJAM uses OGG Vorbis audio compression to compress audio, then streams it to a NINJAM server, which can then stream it to the other people in your jam. This architecture requires a server with adequate bandwidth, but has no firewall or NAT issues. OGG Vorbis is utilized for its great low bitrate characteristics and performance.

Each user receives a copy of other users audio streams, allowing for each user to adjust the mix to their liking, as well as remix later. This uses more bandwidth than having a server encode a single stream, but has numerous benefits (including lower server CPU use and the client having the full multichannel data for later use).
NINJAM can also save all of the original uncompressed source material, for doing full quality remixes after the jam.

rip-utils 0.2.1

rip-utils 0.2.1

rip-utils is a command line toolkit for ripping, encoding, tagging, organizing, compiling, and managing audio archives. more>>
rip-utils is a command line toolkit for ripping, encoding, tagging, organizing, compiling, and managing audio archives. Each utility participates in a common framework that allows commodity tools (such as file browsers, multimedia players and streaming servers) to access your digital catalog simply and effectively.

rip

A single command (tuned for optimal quality using cdparanoia and LAME) drives the ripping, encoding and tagging process from end to end:

% ru rip

No further intervention will be necessary. Each track will be extracted from the compact disc, encoded, tagged (using album information obtained from a freedb server) and filed in a sensible location (~/mp3 by default).

list, tag, diff and submit

For those of us who want to exercise some editorial control, rip-utils also provides powerful support for retrieving, modifying, comparing and submitting album information using freedb servers. In addition to supporting standard editing features based on freedb naming conventions, rip-utils offers convenient methods for performing otherwise tedious tasks such as tagging multi-artist compilations or properly capitalizing album and track information; when maximum flexibility is required, regular expressions can be used. For a detailed example, see:

ru tag + cddb read misc 710ef109

organize and compile

Furthermore, rip-utils uses portable mechanisms to organize your entire audio collection. You can use rip-utils to create file system-based categories or to compile standard Internet playlists. Every file created or managed by rip-utils can be easily used – without modification – by most multimedia players, streaming servers (such as the one provided with the SliMP3 Player) and operating systems that might access your recordings using a shared file system (e.g., Samba). At the same time, every effort is made to ensure that each file name and path is legibly formatted so that humans are able glean as much from the file system as their software:

String::MFN 1.27

String::MFN 1.27

String::MFN is a Perl module to Normalize a string in the manner of the mfn utility. more>>
String::MFN is a Perl module to Normalize a string in the manner of the mfn utility.

SYNOPSIS

use String::MFN;

my $sane_string = mfn($retarded_string);
...

Normalizes a string. Normalization, in brief, means modifying the string to resemble a sane UNIX filename while retaining information carried by the original formatting.
Normalization, in specific, consists of characters other than [w-.+] being removed, lowercasing of all letters, separation of internaCaps, separation of leading numerals from trailing non-numerals, replacement of "bracketing" characters ({[()]}), replacement of ampersands, and collapsing (things that look like) repeating extentions.

Some concrete examples (filenames found by googling for "mp3 playlist"):

Frank Sinatra & Count Basie - More.mp3
frank_sinatra_and_count_basie-more.mp3

Cornershop - Heavy Soup [Outro] [*] [*].mp3
cornershop-heavy_soup-outro.mp3

Soundtrack - American Pie 2 5 - Uncle Kracker - (Im Gonna) Split This Room In Half.mp3
soundtrack-american_pie_205-uncle_kracker-im_gonna-split_this_room_in_half.mp3

12. Only You (Bad Boys Remix)(Ft. The Notorious B.I.G.).mp3

Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown.mp3.mp3.mp3

FUNCTIONS

mfn

Normalizes a string. Returns the normalized string. If no argument is given, mfn operates on $_.
