LPRng 3.8.29 RC3
LPRng is an Enhanced Printer Spooler. more>>
LPRng is an Enhanced Printer Spooler.
The LPRng software is an enhanced, extended, and portable implementation of the Berkeley LPR print spooler functionality. While providing the same interface and meeting RFC1179 requirements, the implementation is completely new and provides support for the following features: lightweight (no databases needed) lpr, lpc, and lprm programs; dynamic redirection of print queues; automatic job holding; highly verbose diagnostics; multiple printers serving a single queue; client programs do not need to run SUID root; greatly enhanced security checks; and a greatly improved permission and authorization mechanism.
The source software compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX systems, and is compatible with other print spoolers and network printers that use the LPR interface and meet RFC1179 requirements.
SVR4 LP and LPSTAT Emultation
LPRng provides emulation packages for the SVR4 lp and lpstat programs, eliminating the need for another print spooler package. These emulation packages can be modified according to local requirements, in order to support vintage printing systems.
Security and Authentication
For users that require secure and/or authenticated printing support, LPRng supports Kerberos V, MIT Kerberos IV Print Support, and PGP authentication. LPRng is being adopted by MIT for use as their Campus Wide printing support system. Additional authentication support is extremely simple to add.
Licensing, Commercial Support, and Y2k Compliance
LPRng is Open Source Software, and the current public distribution is available from the listed FTP and Web Sites. LPRng is distributed under the GPL or Artistic license. Licenses and support agreements for users who do not want to use the terms of the above licenses may be obtained from AStArt Technologies which provides commercial support and enhancements for the LPRng and other network software. AStArt provides network and system consulting services for UNIX and NT systems, as well as real time and network software.
The LPRng software has no known Year 2000 data dependencies. Where necessary, dates are generated using values relative to the UNIX Epoch, and will be consistent to 2034 at a conservative estimate. Details are available in the Y2K Compliance file in the source distribution.

Oscailt 3.0
Oscailt is an independent media center content management system. more>>
Oscailt is an independent media center content management system.
Oscailt is an independent media centre content management system developed by the Indymedia Ireland Tech Group, and written using PHP and MySql.
The word "Oscailt" is an Irish word meaning "open" and is pronounced kind of like us-kilt or us-cult or us-culch depending upon your accent.
Oscailt is a Content Management System designed to allow users to publish news and information on a web-site without knowing HTML or having a high degree of technical proficiency. It requires the following software environment:
Web server
The first thing that you need to run Oscailt is access to a webserver. This can either be a home-version on your PC or part of a commercial hosting package, or even your own dedicated server.
Oscailt definitely works with the Apache web server and it has been tested under MS Windows 2000, XP, FreeBSD, Mac OS and GNU/Linux with various versions of Apache 1.x and 2.x. There are no known compatibility issues with any webserver, but others have not been tested.
Apache Modules
Although Oscailt is designed to work on any webserver that runs PHP, our assumption is that it will mostly be deployed on Apache webservers. Therefore it is shipped with a .htaccess file which makes use of the apache mod_rewrite module as well as providing a relatively secure initial configuration. Oscailt uses this module to enable search-engine friendly URLs. If you do not have this module available on your server, Oscailt will work perfectly happily, although the URLs produced wont be as nice.
PHP
Oscailt requires PHP to be available on the webserver. PHP is a Free software programming language and is commonly available as part of commercial web hosting packages. See the php website
Oscailt requires PHP 4.x or PHP 5.x. It has been tested with several variations of PHP 4.3.x and PHP 5.0.x on diverse platforms and there are no known compatibility issues. There are possible issues with PHP 4.4.x There are a small number of incompatibilities with early version of PHP 4.0.x but they are highlighted in the code and should be easy to ammend.
PHP Modules
Several of the Oscailt modules rely on the GD image extension to PHP. The system is still usable without them but you will not be able to use the image tools such as the resizing of images to create thumbnail links, etc.
MySQL
MySQL is a free software database management system that is also commonly available with commercial hosting packages. Oscailt has no known compatibility issues with any version of MySQL on any platform. It has been tested with a number of versions of MySQL 4.x on MS Windows, GNU/Linux and FreeBSD.
Home Installs
For home installs and testing of Oscailt, you can download a PHP/MySQL/Apache bundle for any platform from several sites on the Internet (Google is your friend) and run Oscailt on your home machine. If you are running a distribution of GNU/Linux, its generally best to install the appropriate software using the software packaging system that comes with your distribution e.g. If you are using Red Hat, Mandriva or Suse Linux, its best to install the RPM packages. If you are running a Debian based distribution such as Ubuntu, its best best to install from .deb packages - preferably using apt or a similar tool to solve dependency issues.

Milter-Virus 2.0.0
Milter-Virus is a wrapper that can be used with many commercial and freely available virus scanners. more>>
Milter-virus is not a virus scanner. It is a wrapper that can be used with many commercial and freely available virus scanners. Milter-Virust is written completely in C, and requires (few skills??).
It is run-able with the Milter interface, but then will only scan for "double extensions".
If you wish it to scan for more, you need at Ripmime or other tools to extract files from MIME-encoded emails. You also need a (command-line) virus scanner.
The difference between this program and the original is that this is much more configurable via the config file. The original version has the advantage that it is simpler and easier to bugfix.
Enhancements:
- This is a large update.
- Many problems in the statistik module were fixed.
- Some spam protection features were included.

Linux-HA 2.0.5
Linux-HA provides a heartbeat and IP address takeover functions for a high-availability Linux cluster. more>>
Linux-HA provides a heartbeat and IP address takeover functions for a high-availability Linux cluster.
The basic goal of the High Availability Linux project is to:
Provide a high-availability (clustering) solution for Linux which promotes reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) through a community development effort.
The Linux-HA project is a widely used and important component in many interesting High-Availability solutions. We estimate that we currently have around thirty thousand installations up in mission-critical uses in the real world since it became suitable for mission critical production in 1999. Interest in this project continues to grow. These web pages are average more than 17000 hits per day, and we see around 100 downloads of our software per day.
Heartbeat now ships as part of SUSE Linux, Mandriva Linux, MSC Linux, Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Red Flag Linux, and Gentoo Linux. Ultra Monkey, and several companys embedded systems are also based on it. Although this is called the Linux-HA project, the software is highly portable and runs on FreeBSD and Solaris as well (even MacOS X from time to time).
There have been many articles and chapters in books written on this project and software. See the PressRoom for more details.
We have put our foot on the road to being competitive with commercial systems similar to those described in D. H. Browns 1998 or March 2000 analysis of RAS cluster features and functions. In most important respects, we think youll find that Linux-HA has achieved this level of competitiveness with our release 2 software.
This release 2 series brings technologies and basic capabilities which match or exceed the capabilities of many commercial HA systems. We think youll be surprised. An R2 getting started guide is available.
We also work well with the LVS (Linux Virtual Server) project and expect to continue to collaborate with them in the future, since our goals are complementary.
Enhancements:
- This release has significant bugfixes and enhancements, making it a worthwhile upgrade for anyone running R2 CRM-style configurations, or who would like to.
- An OCF RA for Xen guests and Chinese GUI support have been added.
- ipfail has been replaced and generalized (limited testing). Master/slave testing and fixes.
- Significant cibadmin fixes.

If only I had the source code... I would change it to run on my favourite operating system. But its a commercial game and its manufacturers dont want to make it free, although its rather old (1993). "Let you make it from scratch." I said to myself and started writing my first game in Ruby.

Cooperative Linux is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively.
More generally, Cooperative Linux (short-named coLinux) is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine.
For instance, it allows one to freely run Linux on Windows 2000/XP, without using a commercial PC virtualization software such as VMware, in a way which is much more optimal than using any general purpose PC virtualization software.
In its current condition, it allows us to run the KNOPPIX Japanese Edition on Windows.

jTDS 1.2
jTDS is a JDBC 3.0 type 4 driver for Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase. more>>
jTDS is an open source 100% pure Java (type 4) JDBC 3.0 driver for Microsoft SQL Server (6.5, 7, 2000 and 2005) and Sybase (10, 11, 12, 15). jTDS is based on FreeTDS and is currently the fastest production-ready JDBC driver for SQL Server and Sybase.
jTDS is 100% JDBC 3.0 compatible, supporting forward-only and scrollable/updateable ResultSets, concurrent (completely independent) Statements and implementing all the DatabaseMetaData and ResultSetMetaData methods.
Quite a few of the commercial JDBC drivers out there are based on jTDS (or FreeTDS), even if they no longer acknowledge this.
jTDS has been tested with virtually all JDBC-based database management tools and is the driver of choice for most of these (recommended for DbVisualizer and SQuirreL SQL, distributed with Aqua Data Studio and DataDino).
jTDS is also becoming a common choice for enterprise-level applications: it passes both the J2EE 1.3 certification and Hibernate test suites, and is recommended for JBoss, Hibernate, Atlassian JIRA and Confluence and Compiere.
jTDS is free software. jTDS is released under the terms of the GNU LGPL, giving you not only the posibility to debug and tweak it to your own liking but also to use it in and distribute it with your free or commercial applications.
The other "free" choices, the JDBC-ODBC bridge and Microsofts own JDBC driver are not actually free. If you encounter an issue with any of them you wont be able to fix it yourself and response times from both Microsoft and Sun are anything but short. Also, both of them lack functionality (the Microsoft driver implements JDBC 2.0, while the bridge is just a JDBC 1.0 implementation) and have serious stability problems: the bridge crashes the JVM if the ODBC driver has any problem and Microsoft just has no intention of really supporting Java/JDBC.
jTDS is also the most performant JDBC driver for both SQL Server and Sybase. We have an older benchmark result but we strongly encourage you to download any benchmark published by commercial JDBC driver vendors and see for yourself. Here are a couple of benchmarks you could use: JNetDirects JDBC Performance Benchmark and i-net Softwares BenchTest 2.1 for MS SQL Server.
Anyway, just give it a spin.
Enhancements:
New features:
- Support for Sybase ASE 15
- Improved support for SQL Server 2005 varchar(max) and varbinary(max)
- Complete handling of cursor exceptions and downgrading
- Better handling of cancels and timeouts
- Configurable socket timeout
- Subclasses of basic JDBC types recognized as setObject() values
Major bug fixes (out of over 30 fixes):
- Statement pool memory leak
- Java 1.5 BigDecimal problems
- Possible synchronization problems
- setAutoCommit() behavior not according to specification
- getTimestamp() returns invalid value after calling getString()
- Cursor opens fails when cursor threshold -1
- iso_1 charset and Sybase
- "All pipe instances are busy" not handled properly
- SSL fails with SQL Server 2005
- Sybase: insert UTF8 string fails when length is 255
