BabyChess 16

BabyChess 16

BabyChess is a chess program. more>>
BabyChess is a chess program. You can edit chess games, play chess on the internet, and play locally against engines.
BabyChess is distributed as free software under the terms of the GNU GPL.
Main features:
- Games between humans and/or engines can be played in the match window. XBoard engines are supported.
- The chess position editor lets you edit a chess position, and save it in FEN notation, as used by other chess programs.
- The chess game editor understands PGN notation.
- The game archive editor reads PGN files that contain any number of chess games. It displays a list of all games and lets you edit those games using the game editor.
- The ICS client connects you to an Internet Chess Server and lets you play games against human opponents.
- The "evaluator" of BabyChess is a chess engine that uses its own communication protocol. It is not an XBoard engine. This program is given a FEN position as an argument and analyzes the position. During the thinking process, information about the current best move and more is written.
- The game editor uses the chess evaluator to analyze chess positions.
- Internally, the evaluator uses 64 bit numbers even on 32 bit systems, meaning it is possible to analyze more than 2 billion positions on PCs.
- This program implements an XBoard chess engine. It uses the evaluator as a backend.
- In addition to the standard algebraic notation (SAN). French, German and Dutch notations are supported. Figurine notation is also supported, also the current fonts dont make it look good. New notations can be created.

IRC-Chess 0.1

IRC-Chess 0.1

IRC-Chess project is a 2-player chess game for IRC which turns a computer into an IRC chess bot. more>>
IRC-Chess project is a 2-player chess game for IRC which turns a computer into an IRC chess bot.

It consists of a Java chess server, with frontend scripts to convert an IRC client into a chess bot. Players then communicate with the bot using standard IRC commands, and dont require any special software to play.

Frontend scripts are available for IRSSI and X-Chat.

The client is merely responsible for interpreting this data and displaying it. In this way, porting the system to a variety of IRC clients is very simple, since
the client script will be short, and effectively contain no code specific to the game being played.

In other words, the Java part is smart. The script is dumb and is just there to make things look pretty.

This idea works. Currently, client scripts have been designed for RSSI and XChat. Since both these programs use Perl for scripting, the scripts are practically identical, with a few client specific modifications.

Porting this script to other IRC clients shouldnt be too much of a hassle, since its just the frontend thats ported, not the chess game itself. Anyone wanting to create frontend scripts for other IRC clients, please feel free to do so.

The PROTOCOL file describes exactly what needs to be done.

miniCHESS 0.8

miniCHESS 0.8

miniCHESS is a chess game WindowMaker dockapp. more>>
miniCHESS is a chess game WindowMaker dockapp.

miniCHESS was born out of boredom. I warn you... if your a chess enthusiast and play a lot then please use xboard or some other chess gui.

Even though miniCHESS has that kinda cool factor, it does get hard on the eyes. I like using miniCHESS for games in which Im in no hurry to finish and go on for a couple days.

Sorry but miniCHESS has no save/restore features yet.

Usage:

miniCHESS has a variety of options:

-h help
-t play text game (def = mouse game)
-r more random moves by the engine
-a hard, engine will also think on your time (def = no)
-d n max search depth used by the engine (def = 29)
-c n max time the engine gets to make a move (def = inf)
-T n size of the transposition table (def = 150001)
-C n size of the cache table (def = 18001)
-k #color background color for a checkmated king (def = #ff0000)
-b #color background color for the black pieces (def = #000000)
-f #color foreground color for the black pieces (def = #ffffff)
-1 #color color for the dark squares (def = #c8c365)
-2 #color color for the light squares (def = #77a26d)

If you specify a search depth (-d) to (say) 4 ply, the program will search until all moves have been examined to a depth of 4. If you set a maximum time (-t) per move and also use the depth option, the search will stop at the specified time or the specified depth, whichever comes first.

Gnuchess is a cpu hog while its thinking. Be aware. When the hard option (-a) is specified then the engine thinks all the time and pins your cpu.

Also gnuchess can be a memory hog. Specifying the size of the transposition and cache tables will modify the memory used. See the memory usage excerpt from the gnuchess FAQ below.

White piece colors are the reverse of what is specified for the black pieces.

CSBoard 0.7

CSBoard 0.7

CSBoard is a small GUI for gnuchess. more>>
CSBoard is a small GUI for gnuchess. It is written in C# and uses gtk-sharp and mono. CSBoard is simple, but allows you just play chess with SVG graphics and native look and desktop theme usage.

CSBoard has very detailed user documentation and fully integrated with GNOME desktop environment for many things, like support of mime-types.

CSBoard use gnuchess as playing engine, but you can also play with crafty of phalanx.

Currently user part of CSBoard is almost finished, it can satisfy newbie user needs. But the requirements of advanced chess users are much more complicated.

So the main goal is development of architecture that will allow things like ICS (internet chess server) support but still keep interface simple.

KBoard 0.9b

KBoard 0.9b

KBoard is a generic game interface for two player turn based board games. more>>
KBoard is a generic game interface for two player turn based board games, and currently supports a bunch of chess variants, connect four, reversi and chain reaction (and more will be added). Kboard also supports network chess play on ics servers, as well as game observation and examination.
We have implemented a quite powerful generic animation engine, and a highly customizable theme specification (based on lua), that can just load everything and create shadows (default theme is SVG, skulls theme too).
At the moment the released code is only based on Qt4, so it should be quite portable, but we will make use of Kde when available in future releases.
Generic game support:
Many board games can be easily implemented using the extensible KBoard infrastructure. So far, the following board games are implemented:
- Chess
- Crazyhouse
- Atomic
- Monster Chess (King and four pawns)
- Progressive Chess
- Reversi
- Connect Four
- Chain Reaction
