Make CD-ROM Recovery 0.9.7

Make CD-ROM Recovery 0.9.7

Make CD-ROM Recovery is a disaster recovery CD-ROM maker. more>>
Make CD-ROM Recovery makes a bootable (El Torito) disaster recovery image (CDrec.iso), including backups of the linux system to the same CD-ROM (or CD-RW) if space permits, or to a multi-volume CD-ROM set. Otherwise, the backups can be stored on another local disk, NFS disk or (remote) tape.

After a disaster (disk crash or system intrusion) the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore the complete system as it was (at the time mkCDrec was run) with the command /etc/recovery/start-restore.sh

Disk cloning (clone-dsk.sh script) allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have to be of the same size as it calculates the partition layout itself). A thrid script, restore-fs.sh, will restore only one filesystem to a partition of your choice, and the user can choose with which filesystem the partition has to be formatted.

Linux 2.2.x, 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels are supported, and if size of the kernel is not too big a boot floppy can be made, otherwise a 2.88 Mb boot floppy will be emulated on CD-ROM.

MkCDrec supports ext2 , ext3, minix, xfs , jfs, reiserfs file systems, LVM and software RAID (multiple devices). Each file system is backed up as a compressed tar archive (including the tar log). The compress program used is the users choice (compress, gzip, bzip2, lzop,...)

But there is more: msdos, fat, vfat and ntfs mounted partitions are recognized and are saved as compressed dumps (on CD, tape, etc.)
The user has the possibility to encrypt all backups with openssl if desired (see the Config.sh configuration file for more information).

To restore your system completely just boot from the first CD-ROM made by mkCDrec and type "/etc/recovery/start-restore.sh " to restore everything from CD. Automatic Disaster Recovery and One Button Disaster Recovery are supported by mkCDrec too.
With the clone-dsk.sh script one can restore selective a disk or partitions to another free disk.

mkCDrec supports IDE (inclusive ATA), SCSI disks, hardware RAID based disks (e.g. Compaq SMART2 Disk Array), LVM and software RAID. With an El-Torito CD-ROM you can boot from an IDE or SCSI based CD-ROM drive on IA32/64, powermac and x86_64 GNU/Linux based computer systems only.

Mondo it backs up your GNU/Linux server or workstation to tape, CD-R, CD-RW, NFS or hard disk partition. In the event of catastrophic data loss, you will be able to restore all of your data [or as much as you want], from bare metal if necessary.

Mondo is in use by Lockheed-Martin, Nortel Networks, Siemens, HP (US and France), IBM, NASAs JPL, the US Dept of Agriculture, dozens of smaller companies, and tens of thousands of users.

Mondo is comprehensive. Mondo supports LVM, RAID, ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS, VFAT, and can support additional filesystems easily: just e-mail the mailing list with your request. It supports adjustments in disk geometry, including migration from non-RAID to RAID. Mondo runs on all major Linux distributions and is getting better all the time. You may even use it to backup non-Linux partitions, such as NTFS.

Mondo is free! It has been published under the GPL (GNU Public License), partly to expose it to thousands of potential beta-testers but mostly as a contribution to the Linux community. I charge for 1-to-1 technical support to fund Mondos development.

nedmalloc 1.04 Alpha

nedmalloc 1.04 Alpha

nedmalloc an alternative malloc implementation written in C for multiple threads without lock contention. more>>
nedmalloc an alternative malloc implementation written in C for multiple threads without lock contention based on dlmalloc v2.8.3.
It is more or less a newer implementation of ptmalloc2, the standard allocator in Linux (which is based on dlmalloc v2.7.0) but also contains a per-thread cache for maximum CPU scalability. It comes under the Boost software license which permits commercial usage.
It is more than 125 times faster than the standard Win32 memory allocator, 4-10 times faster than the standard FreeBSD memory allocator and up to twice as fast as ptmalloc2, the standard Linux memory allocator. It can sustain between 7.3m and 8.2m malloc & free pair operations per second on a 2200Mhz AMD Athlon64 machine.
It scales with extra CPUs far better than either the standard Win32 memory allocator or ptmalloc2 and can cause significantly less memory bloating than ptmalloc2. nedmalloc project avoids processor serialisation (locking) entirely when the requested memory size is in the thread cache.
Enhancements:
- This is an interim release from SVN as there have been many critical bugs fixed as nedmalloc was deployed on very high end architectures.
- Further speed ups and scalability improvements also made.
- However, this release is marked "alpha" since the usual thorough release testing has not been performed.

KFreeFlight 0.3.2-r2

KFreeFlight 0.3.2-r2

KFreeFlight is a flightgear gui-frontend. more>>
KFreeFlight is a flightgear gui-frontend. KFreeFlight can launch it with the most common options without taping a very long command line.
Some clicks and you can fly away.
Why KFreeFlight ?
Because all program I find doesnt have the common options I use. (NMEA for example) or cant be set up for using with an "exotic" GNU/Linux Distribution (like GENTOO or LFS) or a FlightGear source-based installation.
WARNING : the options you enter are not verify by the program and can render FlightGear unstable with bad options (ex caracter in place of number, etc...)
Knows bugs
1 -Some aircrafts havent pixmap because theyre in a directory witch a different name (ex seafireIII in the spitfire directory)
2 -When call reload config, sometimes, spaces appears behind the value in the QLineEdit.
QString::stripWhiteSpace() seem solve the problem. Contact me if it appears again.
Installation:
To build under Linux, follow these steps:
./configure
make
make install
if you have an exotic kde installation (like me on gentoo tape
./configure --prefix=Path/to/KDE/Directory like /usr/kde/3.4/ for example.
Whats New in 0.2.1 RC1 Stable Release:
- Add shadows(aircraft, ai objects, scenery objects) options
- Add bump mapped clouds option
- Add reload aircraft list button
- Add ATC-Chatter option (FlightGear CVS version only)
Enhancements:
- fix critic bugs only

Amanda CDRW-Taper 0.4

Amanda CDRW-Taper 0.4

Amanda CDRW-Taper is a drop-in replacement for the taper component of the Amanda backup system. more>>
Amanda is a client/server application for making remote backups. While originating from a UNIX environment, it also supports backups of windows machines (via the smbclient utility). Client software for other machines is planned. See the Amanda homepage for details.

Amanda CDRW-Taper program is a drop-in replacement for the taper component of the Amanda backup system. CDRW-Taper makes it possible to dump backups to CD-RW, DVD+RW or DVD-RW instead of tape. CDRW-Taper is licensed under the GNU general public license (version 2) (see COPYING for more information).

The original version of the CDRW-Taper simply copied the backed up data from Amandas holding disk to an intermediate directory. After the backup was finished, the CDRW-Taper program created an ISO-9660 image from the intermediate directory which was burnt on a CDRW.

After using this setup for about half a year it became clear, that CDRW media were simply too small for our purposes. While Amanda does support tape changers, the CDRW-Taper has no such equivalent.

One option was to move to a larger type of media, like DVD+R or "double density" CDRW, without changing the software. The other, at that time cheaper option was to change the software to emulate some kind of CDRW changer.

The idea is to have the taper copy the backed up data to several intermediate directories, each representing a single CDRW. After the backup is finished, these can be burnt to CDRW one by one. The changing of the media can be done manually.

The nice thing about this is that this way you can also back up to hard disk. Diskspace has become cheap, so you can have all of your backups available online, and still burn them all on removable media (to be stored in a safe place).

Meanwhile, DVD+RW have become sufficiently cheap to present an interesting alternative to the clumsy manual process involved with backups to multiple CDRW. Therefore, the current version has been extended to support backup to DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW media as well, using the dvd+rw-tools.
