Apple Disk Transfer ProDOS 1.0.2
Apple Disk Transfer ProDOS transfers diskettes and logical disk images between Apple ][-era computers and the modern world. more>>
Apple Disk Transfer ProDOS (or ADTPro for short) transfers diskettes and logical disk images between Apple ][-era computers and the modern world. If youre familiar with the original ADT, ADTPro extends ADTs reach by working with more logical disk formats, drive types, communications devices, and host operating systems.
Main features:
- Compatibility with any device ProDOS can read
- Compatibility with any Apple ][ (or clone) computer with 64k memory
- Compatibility with many logical disk image formats: .DSK, .PO, .NIB, 2IMG
- Server compatibility with original ADT client program
- Server compatibility with Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and probably Solaris
- Ability to bootstrap an Apple ][ from bare metal over serial or cassette ports
- Ability to send floppies in "batch" mode without having to name each one
Server
The server program runs on a computer capable of running Java. Depending on how you want to connect to your Apple, you might also need a serial port and cables, an Uthernet card for your apple, or a couple of audio patch cables. The server offers a compact user interface that shows what communications are taking place between the host and the Apple ][.
The servers primary role is to send and receive disk images as requested from the client. But if you have recently acquired an Apple and a disk drive, and you have no software for it - youre in a bit of a tricky situation if you want to move software from the Internet all the way to your shiny new Apple. ADTPros server can help get you get bootstrapped.
Client
The client side runs on the Apple ][. It handles most of the user interaction. When choosing disks/volumes to transfer, anything that ProDOS can see is fair game. Transferring data occurs with a 20k buffer on the Apple, so all transfers are broken up into 20k chunks. A progress indicator shows how far it is into the current chunk, as well as a running count of the total progress.
Enhancements:
- This release has been enhanced with Jean-Marc Boutillon (Deckard)s FASTDSK fast Disk II reading routines.
- This results in a speed boost of 25%-33% for Disk II to host transfers.
- Bootstrapping operations have been reduced, as there is no longer a dependency on ProDOS BASIC.

FDMS-3 Ripper
FDMS-3 Ripper is a Perl program for extracting the tracks from the FDMS-3 filesystem. more>>
FDMS-3 Ripper is a Perl program for extracting the tracks from the FDMS-3 filesystem. I recently bought a Fostex FD-8 multitrack hard disk recorder for recording music. It works great, but I was disappointed to discover that, although it uses a standard external SCSI hard disk, there was no way to "rip" the recorded tracks from the hard drive to my PC over the SCSI port. The alternatives were to use the analog-out to re-record each track using my soundcard (resulting in loss of quality and loss of synch between tracks), or buying a $500 ADAT card for my PC.
I decided that I would try to figure out a way to rip the music directly over the SCSI port. The FD-8 uses a proprietary Fostex filesystem, FDMS-3. I decided to hook it up to my PC and probed the drive. I was able to figure out the basic layout of the filesystem pretty quickly. Note: this is designed to hard disks formatted in the FDMS-3 "Mastering" mode, which stores the audio data in uncompressed format.
In order to use the program, you will need to take the hard disk that has the FDMS-3 filesystem on it and hook it up to your PC (mine is a SCSI drive -- dont know if this will work with one of the internal IDE drives you can hook up to the FD-8). Make sure that Linux can see the drive (dont try to mount it, though!). You might want to have a look at SCSI-2.4-HOWTO to get the drive recognized. My external hard disk is located at "/dev/sda", but yours could end up elsewhere.
Next, you need to make sure you have the following on your system: perl, sox and fileutils (for the "dd" utility). Security Warning Unfortunately, this program presents significant security issues, so be careful with it. The script needs to be able to access the hard disk directly, so you can either run it as root (not safe), or change the permissons for the hard disk device (in my case, "/dev/sda"). Run the program with "./fdms3rip /dev/sda" (substituting the actual location of your hard disk).
This will list all of the programs present on the hard disk. Then, run it again with the number of the program you want to fetch off the hard disk: "./fdms3rip /dev/sda 5" to get all of the recorded tracks for program number 5. After waiting a bit, you should now have a bunch of WAV files on your Linux machine. Warning This program will create and erase files with the names "dir" and "header" in the directory it is run from. It would be best to run this program from a clean directory, just to make sure there are no problems.

- Linux: Requires PyGame 1.6 or above.
- OS X: No quit menu-item (just close the window). How do you add menu items in PyGame anyway?

GWhere 0.2.3
GWhere allows you to manage a database of your CDs and other removable media. more>>
GWhere project allows you to manage a catalog of your CDs and any other removable media (such as hard disks, floppy disks, Zip disks, CD-ROMs, etc...) indexed in a database.
With GWhere it is easy to browse your CDs or to make a quick search without needing to insert each CD one after another.
GWhere is not finalized, but it will still work and GWhere is very usable. GWhere is free and distributed under the free GNU GPL license.
This program is written in C with GTK+ for GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and MS Windows.
Main features:
Graphical user interface
- GWhere is very easy to use by its intuitive graphic interface. The principal functionalities are accessible in the principal window thanks to panes.
- The exploration of the catalogs is done as in a traditional explorer of files. The majority of the functions are accessible by mouse right click, the menus bar or by the tools bar.
- The functionalities are explained with tool tips. Thus simplifying the comprehension of the program for a user beginner.
Multilingual support
- GWhere can be used in any supported language. If the language of the operating system is not supported then the program will be executed in English (language by defect). The multilingual support is realized with the GNU internationalization system. It is thus very easy for a user to translate GWhere in new a language.
Manager of catalogs
- The catalogues are stored in a very simple data base : a file. Not need to install and configure a complex and enormous data base. The format of the file is optimized not to be too large and to be able to reach the data quickly.
- Information about files, folders, disks
Detailed information
- The strong point of this kind of program is to be able to find acurate information on a file, a repertory or a disc. GWhere makes it possible to do it simply: either in the explorer of files, or with right click. The user can find all necessary information: name, size, dates, category, description...
Automatic detection of the devices
- Whereas other programs require of the user to indicate which is the way to access the device to add to the catalog (and for some the device even should be mounted manually), GWhere detects only the list of the devices present and automatically mount (optional) that which will be added (the automatic eject in the case of CD-Rom can be also activated).
Search engine
- Equipped with a powerful search engine, GWhere makes it possible to find one or more files quickly. This search engine is compatible with the regular expressions.
- Fast research is very easy of use. It makes it possible however to make some adjustments of research (case sensitive, ...).
- Advanced research (nonavailable) makes it possible as for it to make the research based on all the criteria available in the data base.
Settings panel
- In order to correspond to users needs, a important number of functionalities are settables. In this panel we can configure all properties about catalogs : compression ratio, default catalog, catalogs exploration, mail sending...
Mail sending by mail
- This tiny gadget is very usefull in order to quickly send his own last catalog to their friends.
Catalog import/export
- Interroperability sign, it is possible to import or export catalogs from or to differents formats.
- Differents formats support is done via plugins. So GWhere is not closed to no catalog format.
Enhancements:
- Critical crashes for catalog import and empty result search were fixed.
- An application freeze which occurred when the disk to add contains pipe files was fixed.
- The disk adding was optimized when auto description is activated.
- A lot of compilation warnings were solved.
<<lessWith GWhere it is easy to browse your CDs or to make a quick search without needing to insert each CD one after another.

Joyce and Anne 2.1.11
Joyce and Anne emulate the Amstrad PCW series of computers. more>>
Joyce and Anne projects emulate the Amstrad PCW series of computers. Joyce emulates the 8000, 9000, and 10 series; Anne emulates the PcW16.
When moving from a PCW to an emulator, the biggest change you have to accustom yourself to is the way that JOYCE handles discs. Real PCWs (except the few with add-on hard drives) use real floppy discs; you use a start-of-day disc to use LocoScript or MicroDesign, a data disc to save your work on, and so on.
It is possible for JOYCE to use real disc drives in the same way that a PCW does. However this is pretty slow and awkward; since the PCs got a hard drive, you might as well use it.
Enhancements:
- A bug in the Z80 emulation which caused Starglider to hang has been corrected.

TrueCrypt 4.3a
TrueCrypt is free open-source disk encryption software. more>>
TrueCrypt is free open-source disk encryption software.
Main features:
- It can create a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mount it as a real disk.
- It can encrypt an entire hard disk partition or a device, such as USB memory stick, floppy disk, etc.
- Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
- 1) Hidden volume (more information may be found here).
- 2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (TrueCrypt volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
- Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent (256-bit key), Triple DES, and Twofish (256-bit key). Supports cascading (e.g., AES-Twofish-Serpent).
- Based on Encryption for the Masses (E4M) 2.02a, which was conceived in 1997.
Enhancements:
- Access rights are now elevated using sudo.
- Volumes can be dismounted only by the user who mounted it or by root.
- Support for writing data to file-hosted volumes located on devices that use a sector size other than 512 bytes (e.g. new HDD types, DVD-RAM, some flash drives) was added.
- A TrueCrypt volume is now automatically dismounted if its host device is inadvertently removed.
- The maximum allowed size of FAT32 volumes was increased to 2 TB.
- Support for big-endian platforms was improved. 64-bit block ciphers are being phased out; such volumes can still be mounted, but not created.
