Play What I Mean 0.09

Play What I Mean 0.09

Play What I Mean plays media files on a local machine based on a given set of terms found within the filenames. more>>
Play What I Mean project allows a user to, from a single commandline or terminal, enter a string, or list of strings, that represent what he/she wishes to have played by whatsoever media player he chooses, the default being MPlayer, and then having that particular item be found and played.
What this essentially means is that if I were to have a sudden hankering to listen to a particular song or video, lets say Ice Pick by The Pillows, which happens to be the song to a particular music video that I enjoy watching. Under the traditional methods of video viewing I would be stuck with two potential courses of action for playing this particular file:
- Change directories several times to that one folder somewhere that I "know" its in, or
- Point and Click my mouse until I find that same directory and then search through what could be countless files to find it.
Each of these prospective choices have their own inherent difficulties and ire. Using the commandline often requires alot of typing to arrive at the desired directory, often times nestled deep within the tree.
Once there your problems only multiply by the number of files you actually store in your "media" folder, try ls | moreing through a heavily populated folder looking for the name of that file you wanted to play sometime, it isnt too fun and further is a waste of my valuable time.
You may be thinking at this point that the second option, the graphical one, must be easier since its exciting, full of pictures, and frankly novel, I disagree. I may not be the best judge on this matter, seeing as how I cant see out of my right eye however, I feel that scanning through a large folder, or folders, full of files is quite a strain on the vision, and more importantly an unnescesary burden on what should be a simple matter.
Main features:
- Nestable Playlist support
- Multi-string arguments
- Transparent command option passing
- Cache for faster access of frequently played files
- Graphical configure

AnotherScrapBook (ASB) is based on the original AutoScrapbook as developed by Kirk Bauer.

I discovered this fine tool in version 3.7, and, because of one little feature (the capacity to handle Films from my Canon camera), I began rewriting from ground the script from KB.

By lack of fantasy, it became AnotherScrapBook (lets see if itll stay like this, but I need to keep "ASB" as initials...).

In the mean time, KB has further developed AutoScrapbook, so you might as well have a look at it in version 4.1.

Color::Fade 0.01

Color::Fade 0.01

Color::Fade provides a Perl extension for fading text colors. more>>
Color::Fade provides a Perl extension for fading text colors.

Color::Fade uses mathematical formulas to take an input string of virtually any length, and virtually any number of colors, and assign an individual color to each character to fade between each of the input colors.

In other words, it makes your sentences look really pretty.

Methods

Fade $string among the colors in @colors, where $string is a string of length greater than zero, and @colors is an array of colors in six byte hexadecimal format, with or without the leading octothorpe. @colors must have at least two elements.

When called in array context, the method returns an array in which each element is of the format:

y

For each character, where xxxxxx is a hexadecimal color code and y is one character from the original string.

When called in scalar context, this array is joined before being returned.

JColorGrid 1.860

JColorGrid 1.860

JColorGrid is a data visualization tool. more>>
JColorGrid is a data visualization tool. JColorGrid is a platform-independent Java application for transforming numerical or text data into color-grids.

A color-grid is a generalization of the popular heat map representation that displays information two-dimensionally with an associated color hue. Color-grid representations provide an excellent means of illustrating complex data sets and can be used to identify trends, clusters and extremes in a given data set.

JColorGrid has been designed for ease of use and general utility. Data is entered into JColorGrid from a spreadsheet file (.xls) or a tab-delimited text file. Titles, row and colomn headings, scale titles and data are specified in input file. JColorGrid will represent both numerical and text data. There is no limit on the number of columns and rows.

Configuring the output color-grid is done using the JColorGrid configuration menu. Display colors can be specified for the data range, as well as for data the requires special handling, called exceptions. Additionally, the gradiant of the color scale is specified in the configuration menu. JColorGrid has many flexible color options that users are encouraged to explore. JColorGrid will output to both JPEG and EPS allowing the user to further modify the color-grid output in a suitable graphics editor.

Virtual Ring Buffer 0.5.0

Virtual Ring Buffer 0.5.0

Virtual Ring Buffer (VRB) is an implementation of a character FIFO ring buffer. more>>
Virtual Ring Buffer (VRB) is an implementation of a character FIFO ring buffer. Virtual Ring Buffer provides direct access to the buffer so the calling program can construct output data in place, or parse input data in place, without the extra step of copying data to or from a calling program provided buffer area.
In order to facilitate this direct access, VRB makes sure that all references to buffer locations for either output or input is always a single contiguous block of memory so that the calling program does not have to deal with split buffer spaces every time the cycling of data reaches the end of the buffer and wraps around to the beginning.
Thus, the calling program is free to use any number of tools available which do not have to be aware that they are operating directly in a ring buffer. In the latest version, VRB also provides a buffer overflow protection mechanism so that buffer overflow bugs force the program to be trapped by the operating system if accessed pointers wander beyond the range of address space managed by VRB. This feature can be disabled if desired, since it occupies 2 extra pages of address space.
VRB does all this without adding any copying overhead of its own. This ability is achieved by placing a mirror image memory map immediately after the buffer that is a reference to exactly the same memory as the buffer itself. Thus a reference to the memory location immediately past the last location in the buffer accesses the same physical RAM as the beginning of the buffer.
Thus a pointer near the end of the buffer that has a length that would otherwise have to wrap around will instead extend into the mirror image space to get the same result, but without any special handling by the program.
Installation:
First extract the source where you wish to store it. One of these commands might be used within the desired directory after the tar files has been downloaded there:
bunzip2 < vrb-0.5.0.tar.bz2 | tar -xpf -
gunzip < vrb-0.5.0.tar.gz | tar -xpf -
A subdirectory called vrb-0.5.0 is created. Execute these command to change into that directory and compile the source (changing the prefix if desired):
cd vrb-0.5.0
./Configure --prefix=/usr/local
make clean
make install
Note that unlike most other source packages using a configuration system, the configure command name is capitalized. The above commands will not install the man pages at this time. To install the man pages, simply copy them to the desired location, such as:
cp -p vrb/man/man3/*.3 /usr/local/man/man3
Usage:
VRBs basic approach designed into its API is that the calling program asks for the address and length of either the empty space where output data can be placed, or the data space where input data is present (previously placed there). These steps are implemented by macros for maximum speed, and are separate for address and length. The calling program then accesses that data directly in the buffer via that address (and length).
Once the data handling is complete, the calling program decides how much of that data it has inserted into empty space, or taken from data space, and calls VRB functions to indicate the which, which updates pointers (but does not copy any data). There are also functions available to assist in doing read/write I/O. Once the man pages are installed, the command man vrb is the starting point.
Enhancements:
- A vrb_empty function was added.
- Dead code in vrb_take was cleaned up.
- A poll loop was implemented in vbuf. vbuf now uses getopt.
- Buffer size calculation and data type/format were fixed in vbuf.
