GXemul 0.4.6
GXemul is a machine emulator Im developing in my spare time. more>>
GXemul is a machine emulator Im developing in my spare time.
GXemul project emulates processors and surrounding hardware components, in some cases well enough to allow unmodified "guest" operating systems to run inside the emulator as if they were running on a real machine.
MIPS:
- Several machine types are emulated well enough to run guest operating systems. NetBSD, OpenBSD, Linux, and even obscure things such as Ultrix and Sprite can run, to various degrees.
ARM:
- CATS is emulated well enough to run NetBSD and OpenBSD as guest OSes.
PowerPC:
- NetBSD/prep can run (experimental).
The emulator can be used for:
- experimenting with operating systems which you have not tried yet, or operating systems for hardware which you might not have access to,
- running guest operating systems for historical purposes, e.g. Ultrix or Sprite,
developing portable software, when you want yet another target platform to try to compile your software on (you can use GXemul to run a guest OS and compile your software inside that OS),
- development of new firmware or operating system code (but then you need to be aware of some limitations),
- educational purposes...
Enhancements:
- NetBSD/pmppc can now run in the emulator (with root on NFS).
- For ARM emulation (with NetBSD/cats, OpenBSD/cats, NetBSD/evbarm, or NetBSD/netwinder as the guest OS), the emulator does not use 100% of the hosts CPU if the guest OS is idle.

bicl 0.1.0
bicl is a tool for editing the builtin command line boot arguments in binary files like the PPC64 Linux compressed kernel image. more>>
bicl is a tool for editing the built-in command line boot arguments in binary files like the PPC64 Linux compressed kernel image and the PPC64 Xen compressed hypervisor boot image.
he boot argument processing for powerpc Xen is much less complex than it may appear. Assuming that the Simplify bootargs processing patch is accepted in some form, the following rules apply:
1. Arguments from 32-bit wrapper override all else
2. Builtin arguments in 64-bit image override firmware
3. Firmware is used if neither of the above exist
It is true that dom0 Linux has its own boot argument processing, but there is a simple transitive relation between Xens bootargs and Linuxs bootargs. That is, Xen first applies the above three rules to decide what to feed Linux. Linux then applies its three rules (it orders their precedence slightly differently) to decide what to feed the kernel proper.
The format of the builtin command line buffer is essentially just a seperate ELF section, which makes it easy for post-processing tools to locate it and edit it. If you have a 2.6.17 or later zImage kernel available, the following is illustrative:
$ objdump -h arch/powerpc/boot/zImage | grep cmdline
2 __builtin_cmdline 00000200 00406274 00406274 00016274 2**2
The format of the builtin command line buffer is simple, so many tools may one day understand it, but at present the most commonly-used tool is `bicl, which is shipped under the LGPL as part of the K42 source:
http://www.cs.unm.edu/~k42/tools/bicl
The usage of the tool is simple:
$ bicl
`builtin-cmdline manipulates builtin command line arguments
Usage: builtin-cmdline FILE [ARGS]
-?, --help Show this help statement.
--version Show version statement.
Examples: builtin-cmdline zImage
builtin-cmdline zImage console=ttyS0
The tool is used every day to edit the builtin command lines of Linux and Xen binaries as part of an internal IBM project.

cdck 0.6.0
cdck is a simple program for verifying CD/DVD quality. more>>
cdck is a simple program for verifying CD/DVD quality. Even if all files on the disc are readable, some sectors having bad timing and could become unreadable in the future.
The tool reads a disc sector by sector, recording all reading timings, and then tells you its verdict.
cdck project can optionally write a timing table into a text file usable by gnuplot, from which graphs can be drawn.
Enhancements:
- A signed char patch for ARM, PowerPC, and s390 was merged into the main source tree.
- More verbose information about ISO9660 disks is provided.

Factor 0.87
Factor is a dynamic programming language. more>>
Factor project is a language based around a programming paradigm that encourages simple, testable and reusable code.
Factors main influences are Joy for the syntax, Forth for the implementation techniques, and Lisp for the object model. The source is released under a BSD-style license. Share it freely.
Main features:
- Runs on FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.
- Native code compiler for x86 and PowerPC.
- Minimal postfix syntax with an extensible parser.
- Image-based environment offering orthogonal persistence.
- Polymorphism through predicate-based dynamic dispatch.
- Language support for delegation-based design patterns.
- Data structures include linked lists, vectors, and hashtables.
- User-defined types, known as tuples.
- Rich math library including big integers, floating point, ratios, complex numbers.
- Continuations.
- Profiling, tracing, single-stepping, browsing.
- Static stack effect inference.
- HTTP server and continuation-based web framework.
- C library interface.
- SDL graphics library interface.
- Focus on interactive and test-driven development.
- A plugin for the jEdit text editor offers a powerful development environment.
Reflection
Factor is defined in terms of itself as much as possible. Every layer of the system is inspectable and editable at runtime. Everything in the system carries consistent object semantics, and every object can be queried for its type and shape.
Metaprogramming
A powerful meta-level takes advantage of the duality between code and data. The object system, and even tools such as steppers, browsers, inspectors and profilers are built within the language framework.
Transparency
Nothing is hidden from the programmer. Factor is designed not as a black box, but a tool box. The programmer is encouraged to mold the language to fit the problem.
Simplicity
Everything is as simple as possible. The system should be small enough that one person can study the code and understand it completely. Unnecessary code and features are not included.

MacOSD 0.3.2
MacOSD is a visualization frontend for PBButtonsD, the button and power event daemon used for Apple computers. more>>
MacOSD is a visualization frontend for PBButtonsD, the button and power event daemon used for Apple computers.
For PowerPC laptops such as the iBooks and PowerBooks a special daemon named pbbuttonsd can handle the special "multi-media" keys to dim the display and regulate the audio volume accordingly.
However I find the example Gtk+ application gtkpbbuttons not that pretty.
So I implemented a more On-Screen-Display like variant. Currently it can utilize the XOSD library.
Although recently that other program got some pixmap theming support, it is still written in "handling every bit manually C" and still uses Gtk+.
The latest MacOSD deos now utilze the anti-aliasing and real alpha blending canvas library Evas. It does utilize gtkpbbuttons themes just fine - and comes with a slightly cleaned-up version CleanOSX
Version 0.3.0 of MacOSD is also able to provide real transparency With latest X.org servers and a running composition manager.

pyglplot 0.1.0
pyglplot is an interactive 3D plotting and visualization tool written as a Python module that uses OpenGL and the GIMP Toolkit. more>>
pyglplot is a program to 3D-plot mathematical functions and datafiles. It is written as a module for python and as such features the full power and flexibility of the python programming language.
Main features:
Data Sources
- Plot python functions
- Plot python dictionaries containing the coordinates of the points and their position in the grid
- Plot plain datafiles as understood for example by gnuplot
Graphics
- Can make 3D plots of surfaces in normal or parametric mode
- Support coordinate transforms, i.e. can make e.g. polar plots
- Support for pm3d-style coloring of the surface
- Support for wireframe plotting atop of the surface
- Support for transparency: translucent plots
- Support for different types of fog and arbitrary background colors
- Support for dynamic light and specular reflexes etc.
- Use either perspective projection or parallel projection
- Save the rendered plots as portable network graphics (.png)
- Adjust all graphics parameters via dialog windows
Platforms
- This program is developed and tested on Max OS X 10.4 on powerpc with fink and Debian GNU/Linux on i386. It should compile and run everywhere where its prerequisites and requisites thereof are available. These are gtkglext-1.0 and gthread-2.0. Some minimum versions of the libriaries must be met, unfortunately, the gtk+-2.2 packages provided by fink for Mac OS X 10.3 are not sufficient -- perhaps I will port it there.
