Free videolan software for linux

VLS is a dedicated server that compiles under Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. It isnt under very active development at the moment and we advice you to consider the Stream Output functionality of VLC instead.

The network on which you setup the VideoLAN solution can be as small as one ethernet 10/100Mb switch or hub, and as big as the whole Internet! The bandwidth needed is:

* 0.5 to 4 Mbit/s for an MPEG-4 stream,
* 3 to 4 Mbit/s for an MPEG-2 stream read from a satellite card, a digital terrestial television card or an MPEG-2 encoding card,
* 6 to 9 Mbit/s for a DVD.

libdvdplay is a simple library designed for DVD navigation. It depends on libdvdread (which can optionally use libdvdcss).
NOTE: libdvdplay is no longer under active development. VLC has switched to libdvdnav which appears to be more reliable for DVD navigation than libdvdplay. Of course you are still welcome to use, work or submit patches to libdvdplay.
Currently supported platforms are Unix, Windows, BeOS and Mac OS X, but it should work on almost any platform.
Enhancements:
- dvdplay_seek() now also works inside VMGM_DOMAIN and VTSM_DOMAIN.
- a couple of initialisation fixes.

Makepack project is a Makefile which together with a settings file and some simple rule files are able to download, compile and install software for your Slackware installation.

As the installation is done using checkinstall a Slackware package is also created at the same time.

The big strenght of makepack is that it has mechanisms to keep track of dependencies when downloading and installing software.

Wildcards in REMOVE_FROM_PACKAGE now also works with newer
versions of tar.
This version of makepack is supposed to work with
Slackware 12. Unfortunately ddd does not compile on
Slackware 12 because of broken header files from X.org or
lesstif. If you really want ddd on Slackware 12 there are
instructions out there on how to modify those header files.

libdvdcss is a cross-platform library for transparent DVD device access with on-the-fly CSS decryption. It currently runs under Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, BSD/OS, Solaris, BeOS, Win95/Win98, Win2k/WinXP, MacOS X, HP-UX, QNX, and OS/2.
It is used by libdvdread and most DVD players such as VLC because of its portability and because, unlike similar libraries, it does not require your DVD drive to be region locked.
Main features:
- Portability. Currently supported platforms are GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, BSD/OS, BeOS, Windows 95/98, Windows NT/2000, MacOS X, Solaris, and HP-UX.
- Simplicity. There are currently 7 functions in the API, and we intend to keep this number low.
- Freedom. libdvdcss is released under the General Public License, ensuring it will stay free, and used only for free software products.

My Knoppix - Digital Home Edition is aimed to be a smart and centerised OS that can implement at home. Imaging you have a Plasma TV or big LCD screen that connect to a server and you can record and play DVD from the server and surf internet with big screen.

Video sharing using NX technology is also possible where you can play and watch different movies using different pc or pda at home. This CD also comes with videolan program where you can broadcast video or music throughout the network.

With the help of the NX technology, you can have a diskless PC that direct connect to the server and share application and files. Therefore server can play the movie on plasma tv while you can write document with openoffice using diskless pc that connect to the server.
