VaryOnApplet 1.4

VaryOnApplet 1.4

VaryOnApplet is a pushbutton process-control applet for Gnome. more>>
VaryOnApplet is a pushbutton process-control applet for Gnome.

After VaryOnApplet is installed, you will need to logout and log back into Gnome, or you can force the panel to reload by killing it:

killall gnome-panel

As soon as the panel recovers, you can add the VaryOnApplet to it by right clicking on the panel and selecting Add: Utility: VaryOn Applet.

Initially, it will look like a red "X" Checkbox.

To make it do something, you will need to right click on it and set Preferences, as follows:

Applet Title is the text to show beside the checkbox on the panel.

Start and Stop are shell commands to bring up and take down the process that you want VaryOnApplet to control. When you left click on it, the applet plays the role of a toggle to vary the process on and off. Note: VaryOnApplet wont try to bring a process down if it doesnt believe the process is running.

For example, in my Beyond Linux from Scratch (BLFS) configuration:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start

... starts the *dhcpcd* process, which opens my DSL line. Thus, my Applet Title is "DSL," and my Start Command is as above. My Stop Command is "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop."

In VaryOnApplets Preferences, Lock is the name of a file (any file) created by the process.

Now, I happen to know that, as soon as *dhcpcd* starts, it creates a file called /var/run/dhcpcd-eth0.pid on my machine, so thats what I put in Lock File.

Check is to confirm that the Lock File belongs to the Process.

If Check is False, then, whenever Lock File is present, VaryOnApplet changes from a red "X" to a green "V". Every three seconds, VaryOnApplet makes sure the Lock File is still there. No further checks are done, and this is fine so long as the process doesnt crash leaving the Lock File behind.

Process Name is (not) always obvious. You can find out what it should be. First *cat* out the contents of Lock File. If it is a process ID (pid) number, then you can print the name of the process that "owns" it like this:

ps --pid 999 --format ucmd --no-headers

... where 999 is the process ID.

In VaryOnApplets Preferences, set Process Name to the Lock File owner. In my case, this is "dhcpcd," but I already knew that. Now, if you want VaryOnApplet continually to be sure that the Lock File owner is alive, set Check Process.

Of course, VaryOnApplet is a general-purpose toggle. It doesnt insist that there be any particular content in the Lock File if you dont set Check Process. Thus, there doesnt have to be a running process that owns it. There doesnt have to be any special relationship between the presence of the Lock File and the Start and Stop Commands. There dont have to be any Start/Stop commands, for that matter.

There doesnt even have to be a Lock File. Then VaryOnApplet will just sit there looking like a red "X."

ZoltanPlayer 1.0.0

ZoltanPlayer 1.0.0

ZoltanPlayer is a music playing daemon. more>>
ZoltanPlayer is a music playing daemon. It accepts remote commands via its own mini HTTP server and can use seamlessly Audio or Data CDs. Audio CDs are played internally (optionally querying CDDB info servers) and digital songs in audio CDs are played via external players. Its not limited to CDs, as a hard disk directory can also be used.
The optimal equipment for ZoltanPlayer is a CDROM-equipped computer directly connected to an amplifier or stereo. Its not a streaming server, nor a ripper, nor a simple HTTP+HTML interface jukebox (this could be done with a CGI). ZoltanPlayer integrates the controlling of CD insertion / eject with the capability of directly playing CD Audio and spawning external player for MP3 / Ogg Vorbis / whatever song files.
Current version is 1.0.0. This software only runs on Linux and its licensed under the GPL.
Here is a list of commands for ZoltanPlayer:
mount: Mounts the CD in the drive (closing it if necessary). If its a CD Audio, it will take info about it and search the local CDDB cache; if no info for this CD is found, it will query a remote CDDB server. If its a CD-ROM, it will traverse it recursively looking for playable files and the subdirectories containing songs will be treated as groups. Anyway, the list of songs will be stored in its internal database ready for playing.
umount: Unmounts the CD, and ejects it.
xmount: A combination of the previous two. If CD is mounted, umount it, and vice-versa.
hd: Reads a directory from the hard disk (this directory must be defined in the config file to be used). It will be treated the same as a CD-ROM. This command can also be used to re-read the hard disk directory contents if it has been updated since ZoltanPlayer read it.
play: Starts playing the first song.
stop: Stops playing.
pause: Pauses / unpauses the currently playing song.
next-song: Moves to the next song and plays it.
prev-song: Move to the previous song and plays it.
goto-N: Moves to song number N and plays it.
next-group: Moves to the first song of the next group and plays it If no group is defined (as in Audio CDs), it restarts playing from the first song.
prev-group: Moves to the first song of the previous group and plays it.If no group is defined (as in Audio CDs), it restarts playing from the first song.
song-info: Returns information about the song being played in one line. This command can be used from a shell script to display the info on an LCD, a ticker or something like that.
vol-up: Pumps up the volume by 5%. Only operative if the sound card mixer is being used (see sample config file).
vol-down: Lowers the volume by 5%. Only operative if the sound card mixer is being used.
cd-info: Shows the current list of songs, and information about the current group and song being played, if any.
skip-N: disable the song number N (do not play it).
rest-N: enable the previously disabled song number N.
toggle: toggle the skip selection.
toggle-playlist: toggle the skip selection for those songs inside playlists.
shuffle: shuffle the playing order of songs.
unshuffle: get back to original sorting of songs (CD order for Audio CDs, or alphabetical ordering if song files from CDROMs or hard di

glScope 2005.08.12

glScope 2005.08.12

glScope is an audio oscilloscope program I wrote to be used in a physics lab at CSM. more>>
This is very a simple audio oscilloscope using OpenGL, GLUT, and ALSA. Distributed under a completely free license; this means you can do absolutely anything you want with this code. Id appreciate if you credit me where appropriate, though.

Controls are as follows:

Left mouse button: Pan
Mid mouse button: Move trigger
Right mouse button: Scale
Space bar: Start/stop recording
t: Toggle trigger mode (rising, falling, off)
p: Print data
Esc: Exit

When you print the plot data by pressing "P", two columns of text are printed to stdout. The first column is time, the second is amplitude. The easiest way to capture this data to a file is via the command line:

./glscope > data.csv

Since there is no interface to change the audio input device that is displayed, youll actually have to change some code if you want any other channel besides the default recording device. The important line in the code looks like this:

pcm_name = strdup("plughw:0,0");

I guess youll have to read about ALSA to figure out how to change that string.

Feel free to email me with any questions.

TnFOX 0.87

TnFOX 0.87

TnFOX is a fully featured C++ and Python toolkit library. more>>
TnFOX is a modern secure, robust, multithreaded, exception aware, internationalisable, portable GUI toolkit library designed for mission-critical work in C++ and Python forked from the FOX library.
This project replicates the Qt API in many places and has been designed primarily for Tn, the port of Tornado to FOX.
Main features:
- Portable to X11/POSIX (Linux, BSD) and Microsoft Windows
- License based on the Library GNU Public License (LGPL) so can be used by closed-source applications
- Dynamic run-time binding of widgets to each other and to data via messaging
- Wide range of easily extendable (via subclassing) widgets
- Fast and Lightweight, noticeably faster than other C++ GUI toolkits
- Also provides OpenGL, drag & drop, anti-aliased fonts, MIME, graphics & compression support
Enhancements:
- FOX v1.4.35 and FOX v1.6.28 merged.
- 2D and 3D graphing support of arbitrary datasets rendered using OpenGL along with official Visualisation Toolkit (VTK) support.
- Modular building support. You can now build separate no-GUI, SQL database and Graphing sublibraries. You can also toggle whether large proportions of FOX and TnFOX are compiled into your library or not, making for a very slimline standalone executables if you so choose.
- Added child process device i/o class QChildProcess. You can now redirect i/o and manage child processes on all supported platforms.
- An automated test suite now can perform full regression testing on all supported platforms. It stores its results inside a SQLite3 database and can output the database in HTML format (as you can see on the TnFOX website).
- TnFOX is now completely portable to any architecture (not just Intel based ones).
- Fixed stack backtracing on exception throw for Windows (which had become broken thanks to Microsoft) and added support for stack backtracing on Linux via glibc.
- Even more performance increases. Tn now runs on Linux slightly faster than Windows!
- Lots of bugs (some major) fixed.
- New platforms now officially supported: Apple Mac OS X (using Apples X11 server), CoLinux and Microsoft Windows Vista. TnFOX is fully & officially supported on all 32 bit and 64 bit platforms.
