KTemperature 1.9-1
KTemperature is an application to monitor the system temperature. more>>
KTemperature is an application to monitor the system temperature. I was motivated to develop this utility because I could not find a simple system tray resident application for monitoring the system temperature using the ACPI interface.
The application obtains the system temperature from the file /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature .
I have been using Linux and Open Source for quite sometime and this is my first contribution. I hope this will lead to many more contributions from me.
Main features:
- Displays temperature in the system tray.
- Auto loading of ACPI thermal module if required and present.
- Detection of ACPI thermal interface if interface is present /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*
- Right click options of Pause, Restart and Update for greater control of polling with ketboard shortcuts.
- Visually represents the temperature by increasing or decreasing the redness of the system tray icon with change in the temperature.
- The polling frequency can be changed from 1 second to 60 seconds.
- Configurable temperature monitoring interface. If the default monitoring point of /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature is not present the icon displays NA instead of the temperature. The monitoring point can be configured in such cases.
- Persistent configuration. The configuration parameters are stored in a file located at $HOME/.ktemperatue . The file is read at application startup and previously stored values are used. If the application is being run for the first time the default values will be used.
Enhancements:
- Created archive to include version information.
- Added keyboard shortcuts to right click menu options.
- Added caption to root password dialog.

PerlPrimer 1.1.14
PerlPrimer is a free, open-source GUI application written in Perl. more>>
PerlPrimer is a free, open-source GUI application written in Perl that designs primers for standard PCR, bisulphite PCR, real-time PCR (QPCR) and sequencing. PerlPrimer aims to automate and simplify the process of primer design.
Main features:
- Calculation of possible primer-dimers
- Retrieval of genomic or cdna sequences from Ensembl (including both sequences automatically for QPCR)
- Ability to BLAST search primers using the NCBI server or a local server
- Results can be saved or optionally exported in a tab-delimited format that is compatible with most spreadsheet applications.
- ORF and CpG island detection algorithms
- Ability to add cloning sequences to primers, automatically adjusted to be in-frame
- QPCR primer design without manual intron-exon boundary entry
PerlPrimer calculates primer melting temperature using J. SantaLucias extensive nearest-neighbour thermodynamic parameters. To adjust for the salt conditions of the PCR, PerlPrimer uses the empirical formula derived by von Ahsen, et al. (2001) and allows the user to specify the concentration of Mg2+, dNTPs and primers, or use standard PCR conditions. The result is a highly accurate prediction of primer melting temperature, giving rise to a maximum yeild of product when amplified.
PerlPrimer is written in Perl and Perl/Tk. In addition, for QPCR functionality PerlPrimer uses the open-source Spidey executable from NCBI, and restriction enzyme data from the REBASE project is used when adding cloning sites. The program is designed to be cross-platform compatible and has been developed and tested on both Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux-based operating systems. Users have also reported success using the program under Mac OS X.
Enhancements:
- Ensembl compatibility restored once again (slight change in the searchview output was causing problems)

WMtemp 0.0.5
WMtemp is a dockapp that shows CPU and system temperature. more>>
WMtemp is based on code from (WMMemLoad and the sensor code is inspired by WMgtemp).
It displays the CPU temperature and the system temperature in a dockapp, these temperatures are obtained through lm_sensors.
The layout is in line with WMMemLoad and WMCPULoad (and a couple of others).
Enhancements:
- Found out Debian (http://www.debian.org/) has a package and the maintainer has added a manual page, which Ive shamelessly copied. Only the part explaining this package had no manual page is removed, since its no longer true. Thanks to Lars Steinke < lss@debian.org > for maintaining the Debian package.

PowerTop 1.7
PowerTop detects which Linux programs and kernel tunables are resulting in the largest power consumption and use of battery time more>>
PowerTop project detects which Linux programs and kernel tunables are resulting in the largest power consumption and use of battery time.
Power usage is a hot topic for computer users everywhere. For some, its a matter of how long a laptop lasts without being plugged in. For others, its controlling the temperature of hundreds of systems within a datacenter. For all of us, its about keeping the electricity bill under control and being kind to the environment.
Getting your computer to use the least amount of power can be problematic. This site provides information on reducing power usage, tips, and tricks for Intel-based computers running Linux*.
As a first step, Intel is releasing PowerTOP, a tool that helps you find what software is using the most power. By fixing (or closing) these applications or processes, you can immediately see the power savings in the tool. Youll also see the estimated time left for battery power if you are running a laptop. The Tips&Tricks page has fixes for a lot of the issues that are already found. Join our mailing list to participate in this effort to get Linux to use less power.
Building:
Just type make and then run the program...
tar -zxf powertop-1.1.tar.gz
cd powertop
make
./powertop
Enhancements:
- This release shows P-states (frequencies).
- A suggestion to disable TV-out and to disable Wake-On-LAN for unused ethernet has been added.

Simple Monitor 1.1
Simple Monitor is a SuperKaramba theme inspired by the simple but effective Very Simple Monitors theme. more>>
Simple Monitor is a SuperKaramba theme inspired by the simple but effective "Very Simple Monitors" theme by the user humanthing. Some values are not displayed properly though in Very Simple Monitors (network values and IP). This could be because of different setups. My computer is pretty standard so my theme should function properly on most pcs. http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=48973
I like a tight and clean desktop, so I simplified the idea even more. This theme is showing all basic information, and nothing more.
Main features:
- Processors type
- Processor speed
- Processor load (number and graph, for one proc)
- Processor Temperature
- Amount of ram used / amount of ram
- amount of swap used / amount of swap
- amound of HDD space used / amount of HDD space total (for "/root" and "/home")
- HDD temperatue (for "/hda", I could add another drive if requested)
- Computer name
- Computer ip
- Network load (up- and download, values and graph)
- Amount of transfered data thrue internet (up- and download) since last boot
Enhancements:
- Made the three blocks clickable.
- The CPU block opens Processor information
- The Memory block opens KsysGuard (youll need to have it installed to be able open it, obviously. Its in Kubuntu by default)
- the Network block opens your computers ip settings window
- Added a line for your computers uptime
- Changed font colors to very dark gray and very light gray, instead of black and white, to make it look softer.

Tgauge 0.12.1
Tgauge displays lm_sensor readings with gauge-style graphics on GNOME or ROX panels or in a window. more>>
Tgauge displays lm_sensor readings with gauge-style graphics on GNOME or ROX panels or in a window.
Tgauge is a tool for displaying lm_sensors readings. Instead of boring old numbers, tgauge uses graphical representations designed to look like the gauges on a car dashboard. Or anything else if you care to make a theme for it. tgauge stands for temperature gauge because I designed it mainly for monitoring my CPU temperature.
Tgauge can be run in a window, but its really meant for use on a panel; it supports the Gnome (version 2) and ROX panels.
Installation:
Download the appropriate package from the Sourceforge files page. Youll probably need to compile it. For ROX this will happen automatically the first time you run the program from the ROX filer. For Gnome use:
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
make install
then add the applet to the panel using the menu.

wmpower is a Window Maker dock application allowing the user to graphically see the power management status of his laptop. more>>
wmpower is a Window Maker dock application allowing the user to graphically see (and set) the power management status of his laptop.
Main features:
- Battery status display (you choose the battery);
- Both APM and ACPI kernels are supported;
- On ACPI kernels you get fan status and a thermal sensor;
- Direct access to Toshiba hardware: you get fan status and LCD brightness management even without an APCI kernel;
- While on battery, it can stop your fan, HD, lin-seti service to make the battery last longer; if you have a Toshiba Laptop, it can also adjust your LCD brightness;
- Fast battery charge mode: you can keep on battery settings until your battery reaches 100%: this will make it recharge much faster;
- no-meddling option: if you want the program to display power manamenegt status, but not to take any action.

- Support for Dell laptops for temperature and fan status
- Support for Compal hardware
- CPU frequency scaling support
Installation:
./configure
make
su root (if you are not root already)
make install
Enhancements:
- Fixed a memory allocation issue that on rare occasions could make wmpower crash.
- Fixed small bug that made wmpower print forever that it would not fast charge the battery as it was already at maximum capacity.
- When calculating battery time, and battery is charging, now wmpower displays time remaining until battery is fully charged instead of how much time would left if we were running on battery power.
