Parapin 1.5.0
Parapin library makes it easy to write C code under Linux that controls individual pins on a PC parallel port. more>>
Parapin library makes it easy to write C code under Linux that controls individual pins on a PC parallel port.
This kind of control is very useful for electronics projects that use the PCs parallel port as a generic digital I/O interface.
Parapin goes to great lengths to insulate the programmer from the somewhat complex parallel port programming interface provided by the PC hardware, making it easy to use the parallel port for digital I/O. By the same token, this abstraction also makes Parapin less useful in applications that need to actually use the parallel port as a parallel port (e.g., for talking to a printer).
Parapin has two ``personalities: it can either be used as a user-space C library, or linked as part of a Linux kernel module.
There is also a device driver that provides access to the kernel module from user-space, allowing the administrator to use filesystem permissions to control access to the port.
Parapin was written with efficiency in mind, so that Parapin can be used in time-sensitive applications.
Using Parapin should be very nearly as fast as writing directly to the parallel port registers manually.
Parapin provides a simple interface that lets programs use pins of the PC parallel port as digital inputs or outputs. Using this interface, it is easy to assert high or low TTL logic values on output pins or poll the state of input pins.
Some pins are bidirectional--that is, they can be switched between input and output modes on the fly.
Parapin was originally written by Jeremy Elson while at the University of Southern Californias Information Sciences Institute. The original work was supported by DARPA under grant No. DABT63-99-1-0011 as part of the SCADDS project, and was also made possible in part due to support from Cisco Systems. It is freely available under the GNU Library Public License (LGPL).
Current maintenance of Parapin is coordinated by Al Hooton, who also wrote the device driver interface. This work is supported by a very understanding spouse and quite a lot of black pekoe tea.
Enhancements:
- Fixes for two important bugs.
- A build infrastructure has been added for building/maintaining multiple language bindings on top of parapin.
- This is the first formal release of Pedro Wernecks Python language binding.

Swiftfox 1.5.0.7
Swiftfox is an optimized build of Mozilla Firefox. more>>
Swiftfox project is an optimized build of Mozilla Firefox. Swiftfox has builds for both AMD and Intel processors. The 2.0.0.1 release is based on Firefox 2.0.0.1.
The trunk is the most cutting edge of all the builds and is where Firefox 3 is being developed.
Branch builds are built from a code base that has been tested much more than the trunk and therefore should be considered to be more stable.
Swiftfox 2.0.0.2pre is from the 1.8 branch which is where Mozilla tests security patches and other minor fixes before they release the next Firefox update. If you want your security patches as soon as possible and require a browser built from a stable code base this build is perfect for you.

Gnapster 1.5.0
Gnapster is a powerful client to the napster online MP3 community written for GTK/GNOME. more>>
Gnapster is a powerful client to the napster online MP3 community written for GTK/GNOME.
Installation (standard GNU autoconf installation):
./configure [ --disable-gnome ]
make
and as root:
make install
Napster itself has kind of a hacky way to get around firewalls, by setting your port to 0 and connecting outgoing instead of incoming in order for you to upload. This still means that you cannot download from other firewalled users with the same setup, severely limiting the functionality of Napster. Gnapster currently supports this option from 1.3.7 version.
The real problem is that a lot of users on Napster are behind a firewall as well. Thus, your computer and the one you are trying to download from cannot accept connections in. This creates problems. The only way around this is for one of you to be able to accept. This is left up to you.
The best way to completely resolve this problem if you have access to the gateway machine is to setup port redirection. Redirect port 6699 on the gateway machine to your IP in the LAN (port 6699). Then connect to Napster normally and everything should work fine. I used a program called redir to do this on my home LAN.
IMPORTANT! If you do not have admin access on the gateway machine you cannot do this! I suggest opening the properties and checking the firewall option. This will cause the server to limit your search results to only computers you can download from.
Enhancements:
- Multiple server/account management
- Search history
- Bandwidth limiting
- Ability to specify multiple share directories
- Many internal improvements
- Vorbis file sharing support
- MPEG/AVI file sharing support
- Added file type to search criteria
- Updated Browse OpenNAP dialog
- Fixed Safe Exit option
- Added an option to execute a program after a successful download
- Fixed a potentially exploitable remote segmentation fault concerning uploads
- SOCKS5 support should (hopefully) be fixed now
- Timestamped events
- Lots more changes I cant remember
- As usual, many bug fixes

gBootRoot 1.5.0
gBootRoot it construct, develop, test, and boot distributions. more>>
gBootRoot makes the construction and development of distributions fun and simple with its Root Methods (Yard) and user-mode-linux test bed. Finish the product with a Boot Method (2-disk compression supported).
Normal (non-root) users can make root filesystems and boot disks. It includes the make_debian script to create a testable user-mode-linux base Debian system, add-ons to enhance methods, and an MTD Emulator useful for running distributions made with the jffs/jffs2 filesystem.
Enhancements:
- Fixed a @INC problem with rpm packages. The fhs checks usually insert the module path (Debian std. path) into @INC via a BEGIN {}, but the new BootRoot::Options was trying to be loaded before the fact because it had been placed within the BEGIN{} and there was even a reminder in the code documentation from prior releases explaining not to do this. Updated BEGIN statements in gbootroot, expect_uml and yard_chrooted_tests, and made sure "." is always specified first in @INC.
- Thanks to Stian Skjelstad for pointing out some bugs - namely the former annoying @INC bug that never should have occurred in the first place - after I asked him to try out gbootroot to help with his MTD requirements.
- Added a new if/elsif control structure. if ( condition ) n statement(s) n elsif ( condition ) n statements elsif .. Nice functionality to have.
- Made Example.yard portable with the new if/elsif control structure, and added pam.d/system-auth if it exists on the system.
- Commented out many things in Helper.yard because UML.pm has been modified to allow no login along with no password, and provides a new method "close_no_init" to provide a shutdown marker after which uml_mconsole can be used to halt the process. This means faster creation time for root_fs and no lag.
- Huge fixes to all source packages.
- Added format rules found in Example* to the main documentation.
- Compiled for >= glibc 2.2.5. Previous version was compiled >= 2.3.1 which caused some things not to work on old distributions using 2.2*
- Removed the -q from expect_uml because this caused the newer version of mkreiserfs to fail because Namesys decided that unsolicited advertising was in order so everybody knows that there are actually some organizations and companies paying for its development. Wouldnt this be nice in a perfect world for all Free Software projects?
- Tested on Debian stable/unstable and rpm based distros RedHat 7.3/8.0, Mandrake 9.0, and Suse 7.3 thanks to umlbuilder. Overall, this is by far the most heavily tested release to date. Observed that stack overflows are occxurring from time to time in the nested testing environment.
- Added /usr/info/dir and info to make_debian which makes things much nicer.
- Added libexpect-perl and libgtk-perl to Build-Depends for debs; in general, there were many fixes for both debs and rpms and their respective source packages.
- Improved documentation.
- Added stop and go to the uml_mconsole interface for the UML Box.
- Made perl 5.8 compliant perl-IO-Stty, perl-IO-tty and perl-Expect rpm packages. Many things have changed especially with IO-tty and perl-Expect.
- Had to build slram into the kernel because RedHat 7.3s depmod causes the build to fail.
