Dr Fermi Tabulator 1.0
A program for converting Ascii tabulature (for guitar, bass guitar and drums) to MIDI files. more>>
A program for converting Ascii tabulature (for guitar, bass guitar and drums) to MIDI files.
I can see at least 5 different (classes of)music applications:
Theres this piece of music notated in tablature that youve seen in the news and you want to see how it sounds. You usually have to modify very ittle of the original file (if it was precise enough) to do that.
Play along with chord changes or a rythm section: just program the chord change / a simple drum sequence / a simple bass line and improvise.
Practise a lick: program the lick, loop it in the sequencer, start at slow tempo and speed up slowly.
Compose a song: you can, with a certain amount of work, obtain a very crude demo of a song that you can show to your friends before rehearshing.
Convert tablature to standard notation using this program plus a commercial notation program, or this mid2tex program thats supposed to hang around somewhere.

Tab 4.3.9
Tab is a typesetter for lute tablature, for renaissance and baroque lutes and theorboes, in French and Italian notation. more>>
Tab is a typesetter for lute tablature, for renaissance and baroque lutes and theorboes, in French and Italian notation. It runs on many computers but is developed on the linux operating system. Tab is a command line or "dos" program and you cant use the mouse.
You use tab in conjunction with a word processor or editor program and a PostScript display/printing program (like Ghostview). You edit a plain text file with special commands to enter the lute tablature, then you run tab to convert that input into PostScript output that you can print or display with the right program. Because I, as a programmer, have not spent my time on a fancy user interface, I have been able to exend the formatting capabilities of my program. There are other tablature programs that you can use to enter music and save in tab format to take advantage of tabs high quality fonts and proportional spacing.

GuitarTeX 3.1.0
GuitarTeX is a tool for guitarists who want to print good looking and easy to play song sheets. more>>
GuitarTeX is a tool for guitarists who want to print good looking and easy to play song sheets or song books from their chord or chordpro files. It uses the well known chord format with several extensions. The program was developed on a Linux system, but it should run on any other Unix system which has a Perl/TK environment.
It is based upon an idea of Martin Leclerc and Mario Dorion from Canada and their program Chord (Version 3.5 from 1993). To use GuitarTeX, you need to have knowledge of the Chord program (explained later). Though the LaTeX text processing system is used by GuitarTeX, you dont have to know very much about it. GuitarTeX produces Postscript or PDF output automatically (if you want). The Chord directives supplied by GuitarTeX are described in Chapter 5.
Main features:
- Graphical user interface with integrated editor and syntax highlighting
- Prints good looking song sheets including guitar chords without using monospace fonts
- Output formats: LaTeX, Postscript and PDF
- Compatible with ChordPro format, import function for ascii format
- Support for music typesetting with the LaTeX packages MusixTeX, MusixLyr and TabDefs
- Flexible page layout (paper size, margins...)
- User defined colors for different parts of a song (e.g. verse, chorus)
- Optional printing of chord symbols at the end of a song
- Transpose up or down your song by mouse clicks
- Creates single song sheets or complete song books with a title page, table of
- contents, headlines with page numbering, chord table and index
- Supports ASCII tablature and the built in tablature directives for guitar and bass tabs
- Support for multiple languages (if you dont find your langauage, you can help the
- author to add it)
- Runs on Linux operating system (it should run on any Unix system that is supported by Perl/TK and LaTeX, but it is not tested)
- Setup your song book project from single song files with the include directive
- LaTeX commands may be used in Chordpro files (for the professionals)
Enhancements:
- Support to create song books
- Several Bugfixes

eTktab 3.2
eTktab is an ASCII tablature editor for 4/5/6 stringed instruments. he code is based on TkTab by Giovanni Chierico more>>
eTktab is an ASCII tablature editor for 4/5/6 stringed instruments. he code is based on TkTab by Giovanni Chierico. Many of the ideas for the user interface came from tablature mode written for the Unix editor emacs. Mac and Windows binaries were created with freely available tk library.
The program makes 30 fretboard positions available for one-keypress entry (5 on each string.) The following is an example keyboard layout for United States keyboard (first row is numbers, second row QWERTY, etc.) "Base" refers to the movable position of the players hand.
Enhancements:
- Lyrics/tab mode now switches automatically, in response to mouse clicks in tab scores or textboxes
- Can now click on end of textbox symbol to go into that textbox
- In lyrics mode, "current position" color now only added to the textbox that contains the cursor
- Focus now follows cursor for left/right cursor key
- Menubuttons now keep consistent size, where possible
- Fixed bug in internationalization code, regarding Save in File menu
- Return key uses new feature, listed below to insert whitespace, rather than blank tab positions to end of line
- Macintosh Classic and OS X now have File, Edit, and Help menus exclusively in the Mac Menubar (rather than the window statusbar)
- Many OS X bugfixes, due to upstream cleanup in tcl/tk 8.4.5
- Blank spaces may now be added to tablature (using whitespace in tab makes files unreadable by versions older than 3.2)

Gnometab 0.7.4
Gnometab aims to be a WYSIWYG guitar tablature editor. more>>
Gnometab aims to be a WYSIWYG guitar tablature editor. Its features include copying and pasting of tablature passages, a chord library (which the user must fill), the ability to create a variety of tablature symbols specific to the guitar, and clean-looking printed output. It does not attempt to be "smart", i.e. it does not know how many beats are in a measure, nor does it know an E chord from an Am chord. Instead, the emphasis exists on the appearance of the output.
Main features:
- Gnometabs features include copying and pasting of tablature passages, a chord library (which the user must fill with chords), professional-looking rhythm notation (not perfect yet), the ability to create a variety of tablature symbols specific to the guitar -- bends, slurs (hammer-ons, pull-offs, etc.), etc. -- and, of course, clean-looking printed output, given any postscript-compatible printer. Gnometab does not attempt to be "smart", i.e., it does not know how many beats are in a measure, nor does it know an E chord from an Am chord. Instead, the emphasis has been on the appearance of the output.
- Gnometab was designed by me, for me. Consequently, it reflects the kind of guitar player that I am. It has a heavy emphasis on fingerstyle guitar. Note that chords can be printed directly on the staff rather than over it. This may prove helpful for teaching -- the students progress across the staff is interrupted by the chord, making overlooked chord changes less frequent. Gnometab lacks some features peculiar to "rock" guitar, most especially a method for creating complex bends or for notating wild whammy-bar pyrotechnics.... Please feel free to add these features and send me a patch!
- Gnometab is released under the GNU General Public License.

Songwrite is a tablature editor that uses Timidity for playing MIDI and Lilypond for printing. more>>
Songwrite is a tablature editor that uses Timidity for playing MIDI and Lilypond for printing. Songwrite is coded in Python and uses Tk (Tkinter); it relies on Timidity to play midi and on GNU Lilypond for printing.
Songwrite was previously known as GTablature. Due to many incompatibilities between Gnome 1 and Gnome 2, it is no longer a part of Gnome, and has been renamed Songwrite. There is a file compatibility is preserved between GTablature and Songwrite.
Untar the tarball.
Then you can immediately check Songwrite by running the ./songwrite script.
Songwrite now uses Pythons DistUtils for installation. To install Songwrite, type (as root):
cd Songwrite-XXX
python ./setup.py install
NB: Youll get a warning at the end ("warning: install: modules installed to /usr/share/..."); you can safely ignore this warning.

LilyPond 2.10.29 / 2.11.28
LilyPond is a music typesetter. more>>
LilyPond is an automated engraving system. LilyPond formats music beautifully and automatically and has a friendly syntax for its input files. It is Free Software (?open source?).
Main features:
Music language input.
- The input is done in the form of a textual music language.
- Entry may be done with the text editor of your choice, and using the national language of your choice.
- The ASCII input language can integrate with TeX, HTML and Texinfo, thus allowing musicological treatises to be written from a single source.
- The music and its layout are strictly separated, so score and parts (possibly in different styles and keys) and scores can be generated from the same source, and changes always take effect in both places.
- The output can be improved by upgrading the program.
- Pieces can be printed in different (typographical) house styles, or according to different notational conventions.
Automated high-quality formatting.
- Automatic spacing, line breaking and page breaking.
- Handling of polyphonic collisions for notes, dots, and rests.
- Automatic placement of accidentals, beams, slurs.
- Users dont need typographical expertise to produce good notation.
- No user interaction necessary during running, Running the program can be automated, which is convenient for mass converting databases of digitized music, and printing algorithmic compositions.
- The Feta font has been tailored especially for LilyPond, and was designed carefully mimicking the finest hand-engraved scores. It is available as a scalable font, but also as a Metafont.
- Support for many notation constructs.
Special notation
- Chord names.
- Drum notation.
- Figured bass.
- Grace notes.
- Fret diagrams.
- Basic tablature notation.
- Cluster notation and rhythmic grouping signs.
