myrescue 0.9.3

myrescue 0.9.3

myrescue is a program to rescue the still-readable data from a damaged harddisk. more>>
myrescue is a program to rescue the still-readable data from a damaged harddisk. The project is similiar in purpose to dd_rescue, but it tries to quickly get out of damaged areas to first handle the not yet damaged part of the disk and return later.

Note:

This tools is no replacement for a professional data recovery service! If you do have the latter option, dont even think of using myrescue, as it may further damage your disk. This tool is provided only for the case that you are absolutely desperate and definitely cannot afford a professional data recovery. Or in case you know what you are doing, e.g. if you know that it is the aging of the magnetisation layer that is causing your problem.

The usual GPL disclaimer applies. Especially the NON-WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Dont blame (or sue) me if it fails to recover or further damages your data.

How it works

The program tries to copy the device blockwise to a file and keeps a table ("block bitmap") noting whether a block has been successfully copied, not yet handled or has had errors. This block bitmap can be used in successive runs to concentrate on the not yet rescued blocks.

The program has a special skip mode to handle read errors. Usually harddisk surface defects cover more than just one block and continuous reading in defect areas can damage the surface, the heads and (by permanent recalibration) the drive mechanics. If this happens, the chances of rescuing the remaining undamaged data drop dramatically. So in skip mode, myrescue tries to get out of damaged areas quickly by exponentially increasing the stepsize. The skipped blocks are marked as unhandled in the block bitmap and can be retried later.

Finally, the program has an option to multiply try to read a block before considering it damaged.

Kuote 0.9.3

Kuote 0.9.3

Kuote is an applet for the KDE panel, inspired by Gnomes Wanda the Fish. more>>
Kuote is an applet for the KDE panel, inspired by Gnomes Wanda the Fish. It displays an animated character (a fish by default), which pops up quotes generated by the fortune(6) program when clicked (and optionally shows them in tooltips, too).
Kuote supports kioslaves for both the animation file and fortune files (fortune directories still work from local filesystems only). This means that you can enter any URL, not only local file names.
Try for example this fortune file available over WWW: http://hektor.umcs.lublin.pl/~mikosmul/computing/inet-fortune
It contains only two quotes, so for testing purposes use it as the only fortune file or assign it a high probability if you want to actually see these fortunes.
Main features:
- support for user-defined animations (file format compatible with Wanda the Fish)
- run fortune or any other program to generate quotes
- fortune can be configured through the GUI
Enhancements:
- added new animation: "See, Hear, Speak" (CC-BY-NC-SA license) - thanks to Mark Riedesel [Klowner]
- added French translation (thanks to Nicolas Ternisien)
- added "Next" button to fortune dialog
- fixed a memory leak associated with dialog boxes

SpadFS 0.9.3

SpadFS 0.9.3

SpadFS is a new filesystem that I design and develop as my PhD thesis. more>>
SpadFS project is a new filesystem that I design and develop as my PhD thesis. It is an attempt to bring features of advanced filesystems (crash recovery, fast directories) and good performance without increasing code complexity too much.
Uses crash counts instead of journaling (because journaling is too complex and bug-prone) and uses hash instead of btrees for directory organization.
Main features:
- New method to maintain consistency across crashes --- crash counts.
- 48-bit sector numbers. Supports device size up to 144PB.
- Variable block size from 512 bytes to machine page size. Due to design of Linux page cache, small blocksize increases CPU consumption considerably.
- Large directories are organized in a similar way as Fagins extendible hashing. Does not use btrees.
- Files are embedded directly in directory structure (unless hardlink is created). Thus, ls -la command doesnt have to seek to inodes.
- Free space is described in lists of extents rather than bitmaps like in most common filesystem. If a filesystem becomes too fragmented, list of free extents is converted to bitmap.
Enhancements:
- The main fixes are some spadfsck crashes and creating bad directory entries when a user tried to create s filename longer than 255 characters.

Kye 0.9.3

Kye 0.9.3

Kye is a clone of the classic puzzle game Kye to Linux. more>>
Kye is a clone of the classic puzzle game Kye to Linux (well, to Python and pygtk, so it should run on most platforms where those are available). If you want to know what Kye is about, read here.

Python Kye is written and maintained by me, Colin Phipps. News of new Python Kye releases will be posted here.

Kye is an unusual little puzzle game, with a variety of different types of objects. It takes a little time to figure out all the objects and their normal behaviour; so I have included 6 starter levels to introduce the different objects and different types of level you see them in. Once you have a feel for the game, there are plenty of extra levels to choose from. I have put together a levels page, which picks out some of the easier level sets for people getting started. The levels vary enormously in difficulty, so once you are finding the levels easy, look for a harder set.

See the other pages on this site for more information about the game, and suggestions for levels to play. The site on classicgaming also has lots of good information. I have also started a mailing list as a discussion forum to allow people to discuss levels and level design ideas.

This is a clone of the original Kye, but it is a good one. I have done my best to make it as authentic to the original game as possible (and when I say my best, people who have seen PrBoom will know I take this seriously). It mimics the original, including some of the unusual/buggy things which occur in the original game. It should be compatible with all levels for v1.0 and v2.0 of the original Windows version of Kye. Let me know if you find a level which seem not to work right (*).

usocksd 0.9.3

usocksd 0.9.3

usocksd project is a user-mode SOCKS5 daemon. more>>
usocksd project is a user-mode SOCKS5 daemon.

While the usual "socksd" runs as a system service, perhaps on a firewall machine with no users, this one is intended to be run by users themselves.

There are two situations where this is useful:

1. User has access to a machine with less restricted connectivity than the machine he works on.

2. User is on an insecure network and wants all network traffic to be enrypted using "ssh", and has access to a machine running "sshd" on a more secure network. "usocksd" contains special provisions for this situation.

More information on how to run "usocksd" is in the man page.

Installation: sh ./configure; make; make install.
configure takes additional arguments --enable-debug, --enable-norelax and --with-socks5. configure --help for more info.

This program can itself use SOCKS, although I havent tested that option.

Developed on Linux 2.0, tested also on HPUX 10, AIX 4.1, Solaris 2.6.

ReadySET 0.9.3

ReadySET 0.9.3

ReadySET is a ready-to-use Software Engineering Templates. more>>
ReadySET is an open source project to produce and maintain a library of reusable software engineering document templates.
These templates provide a ready starting point for the documents used in software development projects. Using good templates can help developers work more quickly, but they also help to prompt discussion and avoid oversights.
This is an open source project that you are welcome to use for free and help make better. Existing packages of software engineering templates are highly costly and biased by the authorship of only a few people, by vendor-client relationships, or by the set of tools offered by a particular vendor.
These templates are in pure XHTML with CSS, not a proprietary file format. That makes them easier to edit and to track changes using freely available tools and version control systems. The templates are designed to always be used on the web; they use hyperlinks to avoid duplicating information.
The templates are not burdened with information about individual authorship or document change history. It is assumed that professional software developers will keep all project documents in version control systems that provide those capabilities.
These templates are not one-size-fits-all and they do not attempt to provide prescriptive guidance on the overall development process. We are developing a broad library of template modules for many purposes and processes.
The templates may be filled out in a suggested sequence or in any sequence that fits your existing process. They may be easily customized with any text or HTML editor.
Main features:
- High-quality outlines, sample text, and checklists.
- Uses simple web technologies: Pure XHTML and CSS.
- Templates for many common software engineering documents. Including:
- Project proposal template
- Project plan template
- Use case template
- QA plan template
- Several design templates
- System test case template
- Release checklist template

xfsprogs 2.9.3

xfsprogs 2.9.3

XFS combines advanced journaling technology with full 64-bit addressing and scalable structures and algorithms. more>>
XFS combines advanced journaling technology with full 64-bit addressing and scalable structures and algorithms. This combination delivers the most scalable high-performance filesystem ever conceived.
Main features:
Quick Recovery
- The XFS journaling technology allows it to restart very quickly after an unexpected interruption, regardless of the number of files it is managing. Traditional filesystems must do special filesystem checks after an interruption, which can take many hours to complete. The XFS journaling avoids these lengthy filesystem checks.
Fast Transactions
- The XFS filesystem provides the advantages of journaling while minimizing the performance impact of journaling on read and write data transactions. Its journaling structures and algorithms are tuned to log the transactions rapidly.
- XFS uses efficient tree structures for fast searches and rapid space allocation. XFS continues to deliver rapid response times, even for directories with tens of thousands of entries.
Massive Scalability
- XFS is a full 64-bit filesystem, and thus is capable of handling filesystems as large as a million terabytes.
- 263 = 9 x 1018 = 9 exabytes
- A million terabytes is thousands of times larger than most large filesystems in use today. This may seem to be an extremely large address space, but it is needed to plan for the exponential disk density improvements observed in the storage industry in recent years. As disk capacity grows, not only does the address space need to be sufficiently large, but the structures and algorithms need to scale. XFS is ready today with the technologies needed for this scalability.
- XFS also continues to evolve to match the capabilities of the hardware it is being deployed on. Efficiency when dealing with large amounts (terabytes) of main memory and hence large numbers of active files and large amounts of cached file data are areas demanding continual improvements. Extending XFS to improve performance on large NUMA machines is also an area of active research and development.
Efficient Allocations
- XFS implements extremely sophisticated space management techniques. Efficiency in space management has been achieved through the use of variable sized extents, rather than the simple single-block-at-a-time mechanism of many other filesystems. XFS was the first filesystem to implement delayed space allocation for buffered writes, supports direct I/O, provides an optional realtime allocator, and is able to align allocations based on the geometry of the underlying storage device. The XFS allocator performs admirably in the presence of multiple parallel writers, and is renowned for its resistance to space fragmentation under such conditions.
Excellent Bandwidth
- XFS is capable of delivering very close to the raw I/O performance that the underlying hardware can provide. XFS has proven scalability on SGI Altix systems of multiple gigabytes-per-second on multiple terabyte filesystems.
