OCSID 10.2
OCSID is a Slackware based distro with Gnome, like the good old Slackware used to have. more>>
OCSID is a Slackware based distro with Gnome, like the good old Slackware used to have.
First lets start with what OCSID is NOT:
- is not yet another linux distro;
- is not yet another fork;
- is not born to divide the Community;
- is not a closed development project.
So What OCSID really is?
- is a wrapper to contain official Slackware packages together with Community related efforts;
- is a Slackware based distro with Gnome, like the good old Slackware used to have;
- is an installation dvd so that you can install everything you want from the good old Slackware installer;
- is an open Community project and everyone is free to participate, the first goal is to unite Slackware Communitys efforts.
So OCSID is a dvd with all the Official Slackware packages untouched, with Freerock GNOME and some other packages that usually people want but arent included in Slackware (Amarok, Postfix, ecc.). Besides OCSID ships kernel 2.6.13 by default.
Not only you can install everything from the classic installer but also OCSID fully supports dependencies through slapt-get.
So that you can do it the debian way: install a minimum set of packages directly from the first Slackware CD, then install slapt-get and set OCSID as your main repository, finally you can get everything you need as in this example:
slapt-get --install kde
This way you can also upgrade your old Slackware system to OCSID with a single command.
Latest stable version of OCSID: 10.2 (Slackware 10.2, Freerock GNOME 2.12.1).

MapServer 4.10.2
MapServer is an Open Source development environment for building spatially-enabled internet applications. more>>
MapServer is an Open Source development environment for building spatially-enabled internet applications. The project is not a full-featured GIS system, nor does it aspire to be. Instead, MapServer excels at rendering spatial data (maps, images, and vector data) for the web.
Beyond browsing GIS data, MapServer allows you create "geographic image maps", that is, maps that can direct users to content. For example, the Minnesota DNR Recreation Compass provides users with more than 10,000 web pages, reports and maps via a single application. The same application serves as a "map engine" for other portions of the site, providing spatial context where needed.
MapServer was originally developed by the University of Minnesota (UMN) ForNet project in cooperation with NASA and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR). Presently, the MapServer project is hosted by the TerraSIP project, a NASA sponsored project between the UMN and consortium of land management interests.
The software is maintained by a growing number of developers (nearing 20) from around the world and is supported by a diverse group of organizations that fund enhancements and maintenance.
Main features:
- Advanced cartographic output
- Scale dependent feature drawing and application execution
- Feature labeling including label collision mediation
- Fully customizable, template driven output
- TrueType fonts
- Map element automation (scalebar, reference map, and legend)
- Thematic mapping using logical- or regular expression-based classes
- Support for popular scripting and development environments
- PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby, Java, and C#
- Cross-platform support
- Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, and more
- A multitude of raster and vector data formats
- TIFF/GeoTIFF, EPPL7, and many others via GDAL
- ESRI shapfiles, PostGIS, ESRI ArcSDE, Oracle Spatial, MySQL and many others via OGR
- Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web specifications
- WMS (client/server), non-transactional WFS (client/server), WMC, WCS, Filter Encoding, SLD, GML, SOS
- Map projection support
- On-the-fly map projection with 1000s of projections through the Proj.4 library

openSUSE KDE Tweaks 10.2
openSUSE KDE Tweaks are actually KDE 3.5.5 (openSUSE 10.2) patches and two RPM tools. more>>
openSUSE KDE Tweaks are actually KDE 3.5.5 (openSUSE 10.2) patches and two RPM tools through which I have added, modified and removed some features.
I like and dislike the new kickoff menu at the same time, so I decided to change everything about it that I dont like.
Although my patches were meant to change only the new kickoff menu, I ended up changing other parts of KDE, and even writing two little apps. The results of my hacking are all here, so make good use of it.
The patch provides the following modifications:
bi-kicker:
- Changes the order of the kickoff tabs to a more logical order (in order of access frequency): Favorites, Applications, History, Leave
- Removes the IMHO useless Computer tab (can be replaced with a sysinfo icon in the Favorites tab)
- Corrects the order of Grub entries (to descending) in the "Start Operating System" submenu
- Removes the useless "Restart and boot directly into ..." comments from the Start OS submenu
- Changes the order of the Recently Used Apps to the same order as in the old menu and as in the Recent Documents list (new at top, older at bottom)
- Lower the number of days a New Application entry is kept (1 instead of 3)
- Adds an Uninstall context menu entry which calls the uninstall_rpm script with the *.desktop file as the first parameter
- Changes in the old KMenu the "Recently Used Applications" tag to just "Recently Used" and the "Most Used Applications" tag to "Most Used"
- Adds a rounded corner to the left side of the search mode
bi-kicker_noshadow:
- Everything included in bi-kicker
- Removes the shadow surrounding the menu. Useful for those who enable the nVidia composite mode (providing a cool shadow for all active windows) and would like to avoid a strange double shadow effect.
bi-kdesktop:
- Prevents the unwanted realignment of desktop icons when the Auto Align
bi-kcontrol:
- Removed the "Get New Wallpapers" button from the Desktop Configuration Dialog, because it provides unfiltered access to images that are more and more shameless
- Changes the icon of the Display option (different from the Screensaver option)
bi-krpmview:
- Adds a "Quick Install" button to the krpmview kpart which calls the install_rpm script with the *.rpm file as the first parameter
The RPM-Tools provide:
- Simple and quick solution to install an RPM + konqueror service menu
- Simple and quick solution to uninstall an RPM + konqueror service menu
- No dependency handling

Reveal 1.2
Reveal is an easy to use, cross platform EXIF metadata viewer with limited editing capabilities. more>>
Reveal project is an easy to use, cross platform EXIF metadata viewer with limited editing capabilities.
Reveal was designed to present as many details about how a photo was taken in a clear and easy to understand format.
Im finally letting the cat out of the bag. Today Ive released Reveal 1.0, a tiny yet very powerful EXIF metadata viewer and editor. Since Im putting Reveal and Album Shaper 2.2 screenshots on the same page I suppose Ill point out that you can view those here, which includes a great deal of spoilers for the next Album Shaper release.
Reveal kept me busy for a long time.
What started out as adding Exif support to Album Shaper grew, and grew, and grew. Originally I wanted Album Shaper to auto rotate photos during import, which it now does using the CVS code, in addition to being able to show EXIF metadata somehow. EXIF metadata is stored in just about every digital photo, encoding how the photo was taken (f-stop, shutter speed, ISO sensativity, date and time, etc), as well as various processing options (sharpness, saturation, contrast), what white balance was used, if the flash fired, and much much more.
EXIF was designed to keep track of all that stuff for you, but to date looking up how a photo was taken is a rather difficult error prone process. There are a number of text-based EXIF viewers out there. Usually youre prsented with a long list of fields and values, often uninterpreted, and in now particular order. If youre camera didnt record a value but you know it and youd like to enter it your our of luck. If you scanned in a photo you can guarantee such data is not present. Furthermore, most camera makers tend to hide a great deal of the details in proprietary Makernote entries, despite the fact that very good standard Exif tags exist. Jeesh!
Reveal is intended to be a breath of fresh air. Ive selected the settings I think most people will be interested in (shutter speed, aperature, ISO sensativity, flash status/mode, shooting mode, metering mode, focus mode, sensor type, subject distance, focal length and 35mm equiv, digital zoom factor, white balance mode, and contrast, saturation, and sharpness settings).
These fields have been organized into groups of four and annotated with nice icons that reflect the value of a particular field. More generate fields like the date and time a photo was taken, the camera used to take it, the copyright holder and photographer, in addition to any known photo modifications are presented in a primary summary pane. For those of you who would like to get direct access to the Exif data you can do so under a details pane that clearly separates entries using alternating colors.
While Id like to think Reveal is a step ahead in terms of usability, in terms of functionality there are a number of advances. Reveal is built on top of the Qt and Exiv2 libraries so its cross platform.
Today Im providing Windows and Mac OSX binaries in addition to the source. Ive gotten it running under Gentoo Linux so if anyone would like to produce packages for various distributions please send them my way. The OS X binary requires OS X 10.3.9 or later or 10.4 of course. I should be able to add support for 10.2 users in the future if the demand is there.
At this time Reveal does not support internationalization, but a version will be released that supports i18n along side the next Album Shaper release. Id like to think the editing capabilities in addition to Reveals ability to decipher a good deal of proprietary Makernote data will also be appreciated. So enjoy.
Reveal will also be embedded in the next release of Album Shaper as a photo info window that can be pulled up at any time similar to a layers dialog in many image editors.
Id like to also thank Pavel Nemec for putting together Album Shaper 2.1 Suse pacakges. Hopefully Album Shaper will even been included on Suse discs in the future. One can only hope.
Enhancements:
Major Improvements:
- Added read support for: (*not fully tested)
+PNG*
+TIFF
+ARW (Sony)
+CR2 (Canon)
+DNG (Adobe)
+NEF (Nikon)
+PEF (Pentax)
+MRW (Konica Minolta)
+SR2* (Sony)
+THM (Canon)
- Date, time, and numbering formatting performed using system locale
- Significantly improved animation when expanding/collapsing photo thumbnails
- Rewrote about window
- Bumped Qt to version 4.2
- Bumped Exiv2 to version 0.11
- Auto rotated embededded jpeg thumbnails now visible in the Details pane.
- Added Description viewing/editing support
Minor Improvements:
- Recognize lesser used .jpeg extension
- Report file sizes using correct suffixes for *bytes, aka MB instead of Mb, an so on
- When editing time, minutes line edit shows leading 0 when minutes are<<less
