Xubuntu 5.10

Xubuntu 5.10

Xubuntu is a linux distibution derived from Ubuntu that uses Xfce as desktop manager. more>>
Xubuntu is a linux distibution derived from Ubuntu that uses Xfce as desktop manager.

The aim of the Xubuntu community project is to provide a nice Ubuntu desktop experience (even on older hardware) by using Xfce4 as the desktop environment and GTK+ 2 applications wherever possible.

Xfce4 has been supported in Ubuntus universe by the MOTUXfce team since Hoary and Breezy. For Dapper we want to go one step further and make Xubuntu a sibling of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu by having install and live CD images generated for it.

We havent decided on a release date, but it should be as close as possible to Dappers and should use the latest stable Xfce 4.X code (hopefully 4.4 will be release by then)

Kubuntu 5.10

Kubuntu 5.10

Kubuntu is an Ubuntu-derived distribution. more>>
Kubuntu Linux is a Ubuntu-derived distribution. The Kubuntu CDs are made up of Ubuntus base plus KDE. You can get exactly the same effect by installing Ubuntu and adding the KDE packages from the Ubuntu archives.
Kubuntu is the result of several months effort to get KDE 3.4 into Ubuntus main repository and create the first major derived Ubuntu distribution. It is not a fork of Ubuntu but an official project of it, sharing the same package archive and infrastructure. It is possible to convert an Ubuntu system to Kubuntu or vice versa.
Highlights of KDE 3.4 include the groupware manager Kontact 1.1, the multi-protocol instant messenger Kopete and the excellent KPDF reader. As well as official KDE applications Kubuntu also features the finest pick of leading Free Software desktop programmes.
KDEs default settings have been tweaked to Ubuntu standards while remaining true to KDE. Changes include sudo support, an uncluttered desktop and a tidied K-Menu for applications. Kubuntu developers come from the KDE and Debian communities and improvements are sent back to the original projects. Kubuntu would like to thank the KDE developers and Debian KDE packagers for their excellent work.
As an Ubuntu user you should already know that Ubuntu is based on the Debian distribution and ships, by default, with the GNOME desktop. When you tell people your distro of choice is Ubuntu, they will naturally assume you run a GNOME desktop.
Therefore, once you install KDE for Ubuntu, simply saying you are running Ubuntu can lead to some confusion in the support forums and on mailing lists. So, for purpose of clarity and to help avoid confusion, it was decided that KDE for Ubuntu will be affectionately known as "Kubuntu." This follows the long standing tradition of the KDE application naming convention, which entails adding K as the first letter of a KDE application name.
Kubuntu aims to be to KDE what Ubuntu is to Gnome: a great integrated distro with all the great features of Ubuntu, but based on the KDE desktop. Kubuntu is released regularly and predictably.
Main features:
- KDE 3.4.2
- X.org 6.8.2 - with modular packaging
- Adept and Adept Updater - Package Manager
- KDE System Settings - Easier Control Centre
- KDE Language Packs - now on the CD
- KDE Bluetooth Framework
- OpenOffice.org 2
- GStreamer for Kaffine and AmaroK - media framework

- KLaptopDaemon - now with hibernate support
- Locate File Search - find files in Konqueror
- Automounting - for CDs and memory sticks
- Katapult - alt+space for program launching
- Simplified Konqueror

SCCS 1.0

SCCS 1.0

SCCS is an implementation of the POSIX standard Source Code Control System. more>>
SCCS project is an implementation of the POSIX standard Source Code Control System.
Calling configure manually is outdated because this is a task of the makefile system.
There is no configure, simply call make on the top level directory.
***** If this does not work for you, read the rest if this file *****
***** If you have any problem, also first read the topic specific *****
***** README.* files (e.g. README.linux for Linux problems). *****
All results in general will be placed into a directory named OBJ/< arch-name >/ in the current projects leaf directory.
You **need** either my "smake" program, the SunPRO make from /usr/bin/make (SunOS 4.x) or /usr/ccs/bin/make (SunOS 5.x) or GNU make to compile this program. Read README.gmake for more information on gmake and a list of the most annoying bugs in gmake.
All other make programs are either not smart enough or have bugs.
Enhancements:
- The new program, "sccslog", creates a Changelog file from SCCS history files.
- The program was ported to HP-UX. (Since HP-UX has no seteuid(), setresuid() is used instead).
- Several bugs in the man pages have been fixed.

Ubuntu Linux 5.10

Ubuntu Linux 5.10

Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. more>>
Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support.

The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

These freedoms make Ubuntu fundamentally different from traditional proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.

The team behind Ubuntu makes the following public commitment to its users:

* Ubuntu will always be free of charge, and there is no extra fee for the "enterprise edition", we make our very best work available to everyone on the same Free terms.
* Ubuntu includes the very best in translations and accessibility infrastructure that the Free Software community has to offer, to make Ubuntu usable by as many people as possible.
* Ubuntu is released regularly and predictably; a new release is made every six months. You can use the current stable release or the current development release. Each release is supported for at least 18 months.
* Ubuntu is entirely committed to the principles of free and open source software development; we encourage people to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.

Ubuntu is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports Intel x86 (IBM-compatible PC), AMD64 (Hammer) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.

Ubuntu includes more than 1,000 pieces of software, starting with the Linux kernel version 2.6 and Gnome 2.8, and covering every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to internet access applications, web server software, email software, programming languages and tools and of course several games.

NBTScan 1.5.1

NBTScan 1.5.1

NBTScan is a NetBIOS Name Network Scanner. more>>
NBTScan is a NetBIOS Name Network Scanner.
NBTscan is a program for scanning IP networks for NetBIOS name information. It sends NetBIOS status query to each address in supplied range and lists received information in human readable form. For each responded host it lists IP address, NetBIOS computer name, logged-in user name and MAC address.
NBTscan compiles and runs on Unix and Windows. I have tested it on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, FreeBSD 4.3, OpenBSD 2.8 and RedHat Linux 7.1 and 7.3. It should also compile and run on Solaris and other Linuxes as well.
Steve Coleman (Steve (dot) Coleman (at) jhuapl (dot) edu) ported previous versions of NBTscan to Solaris, HP-UX and OSF/1 and fixed several bugs. He reports that NBTscan also runs on IRIX/SGI with minor problems. I was also told that NBTscan runs on AIX (Antonio Dellelce) and SunOS 4.1.3_U1 (Joe Cline). Mohammad A. Haque (mhaque (at) haque (dot) net) ported nbtscan to Darwin.
This program is a successor of a perl script with the same name and does essentially the same thing, being much faster though. NBTscan produces a report like that:
IP address NetBIOS Name Server User MAC address
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
192.168.1.2 MYCOMPUTER JDOE 00-a0-c9-12-34-56
192.168.1.5 WIN98COMP RROE 00-a0-c9-78-90-00
192.168.1.123 DPTSERVER ADMINISTRATOR 08-00-09-12-34-56
First column lists IP address of responded host. Second column is computer name. Third column indicates if this computer shares or is able to share files or printers. For NT machine it means that Server Service is running on this computer.
Most often it means that this computer shares files. Third column shows user name. If no one is logged on from this computer it is same as computer name. Last column shows adapter MAC address.
If run with -v switch NBTscan lists whole NetBIOS name table for each responded address. The output looks like that:
NetBIOS Name Table for Host 192.168.1.123:
Name Service Type
----------------------------------------
DPTSERVER < 00 > UNIQUE
DPTSERVER < 20 > UNIQUE
DEPARTMENT < 00 > GROUP
DEPARTMENT < 1c > GROUP
DEPARTMENT < 1b > UNIQUE
DEPARTMENT < 1e > GROUP
DPTSERVER < 03 > UNIQUE
DEPARTMENT < 1d > UNIQUE
??__MSBROWSE__? < 01 > GROUP
INet~Services < 1c > GROUP
IS~DPTSERVER < 00 > UNIQUE
DPTSERVER < 01 > UNIQUE
Adapter address: 00-a0-c9-12-34-56
Installation:
- Ungzip and untar sources
- Run ./configure script
- Run make and make install
- Thats all.
Enhancements:
- Fixed segmentation fault when using -f option (noticed by Brian Lovrin)
- Fixed printing ugliness (noticed by Darren Critchley)
- Changed version number :) (1.5 said that it is 1.0.3 - now it proudly says 1.5.1)

sh2log 1.0

sh2log 1.0

sh2log is a PTY sniffing program that captures all keystrokes and console output of physical and virtual consoles. more>>
sh2log is a PTY sniffing program that captures all keystrokes and console output of physical and virtual consoles. sh2log works in userland and does not require the installation of a kernel module.

Consequently, it can be run on a wide range of different UNIX platforms. It provides ready-to-use log files and is meant to be used for legitimate purposes such as auditing user actions on a sensitive server or a honeypot.

How to install it

2.1. Edit config.h and setup the following values:

CONNECT_IP IP address of the machine on which sh2logd runs
SERVER_PORT UDP port in use by sh2logd
REAL_SHELL_DIR Directory for the real shells (/bin/shells)
MAX_LOG_SIZE Maximum size before a new log file is created
secret This is a 128-bit symmetric key used to secure
the data when transmitted over the network.

2.2. Compile sh2log by simply running "make system"

System can be any of those: linux, freebsd, openbsd, cygwin, sunos, aix, irix, hpux and osf.

2.3. Replace the original shell with sh2log and run sh2logd:

# mkdir /bin/shells/
# cp -p /bin/{sh,bash} /bin/shells/
# rm -f /bin/{sh,bash}
# cp -p sh2log /bin/bash
# cp -p sh2log /bin/sh
# ./sh2logd

If you see an error message about "bash: text file busy", check that you have rmed the file before copying sh2log over it. Also, Id recommended not running sh2log and sh2logd on the same machine.

Warning: /bin/sh is often a symlink to /bin/bash. DO NOT FORGET TO CREATE "/bin/shells/sh" OR YOUR SYSTEM WILL BE UNUSABLE!

3. Monitoring your users: the interactive log parser

Please try first to run ./parser with the provided sh2log example file "test.bin". Window resizing requires XTerm (not rxvt, eterm or konsole) and a valid DISPLAY; or if you use PuTTY, try resizing the window by hand.

The parser provides both non-interactive and interactive (takedown-like) modes of operation. In interactive mode, you can pause, fast forward (2x or 4x) and also follow in real time what the users are doing one the system, and have a live view of all terminals.

cnet 2.0.10

cnet 2.0.10

The cnet network simulator (v2.0.9) enables experimentation with various network protocols. more>>
The cnet network simulator (v2.0.10) enables experimentation with various data-link layer, network layer, routing and transport layer networking protocols in networks consisting of any combination of point-to-point links and IEEE 802.3 Ethernet segments. cnet has been specifically developed for, and is used in, undergraduate computer networking courses taken by thousands of students worldwide since 1991. At The University of Western Australia, cnet is used primarily in Chris McDonalds undergraduate unit Computer Networks (IT312).

cnet either displays the entire network under Tcl/Tk or runs rather less visually on an ASCII terminal. Under Tcl/Tk, cnet provides a graphical representation of the network under execution and permits a number of attributes of the network to be modified while the simulation is running. Nodes may be selected with the mouse to reveal a sub-window displaying the output and protocol statistics of that node. Some of the nodes attributes, such as message generation rates and sizes, may be modified while the network is running by selecting choice buttons. Similarly, the default attributes of all nodes in the network may be simultaneously modified by selecting and changing global attributes. From another menu, each node may be forced to reboot, (impolitely) crash, (politely) shutdown and reboot, pause and (hardware) fail, you can do many things.

You should note the following requirements and restrictions for various systems:

If using a Linux(ELF) system, the freely-available libelf package is required. Most Linux(ELF) systems (with at least version 2.0 kernels) now provide a copy of libelf, but if yours doesnt it greatly simplifies things if you can install libelf globally on your system. A full copy of libelf is included in the cnet distribution.
If using SunOS you should be using Release 4.1.2 or beyond. If still using Release 4.1.1 you must obtain and install Sun-Patch-ID#100257-03 (4-Oct-91) - whoa! welcome to the 21st century.
If using an SGI-IRIX machine, you must be using Release 5 or 6 (Release 4 is not supported).
Older Linux systems with a.out formats are no longer supported.
cnet has been tested with most Tcl/Tk versions, (Tcl7.X+Tk3.X), (Tcl7.X+Tk4.X), (Tcl8.0+Tk8.0), and. (Tcl8.3+Tk8.3).

Frankenwall is a bash shell script intended to create a highly secure IPTables based Linux firewall/router. more>>
Frankenwall is a bash shell script intended to create a highly secure IPTables based Linux firewall/router with QOS/traffic shaping/bandwidth management.
Be certain you know exactly what your network needs before using it. The primary focus of this project is security through an intimate understanding of your networking requirements. All configuration is done by editing text files.
Enhancements:
- Added check for file to exist before attempting to back it up in install.sh
- Added timestamped backup directories to install.sh
- Added the ability to specify alternate configuration directories in order to quickly change from one configuration to another without overwriting the files found in /etc/frankenwall.d. This option can be used with frankenwall, and with install.sh as well. This way, you can update your alternate config files by specifying a different config directory to install.sh.
- Added "spawn" as a new control option to the frankenwall script. When you specify "spawn", frankenwall will read all network information from a new configuration file called spawn_net.conf instead of pulling it from your systems actual network configuration. This allows frankenwall to generate working iptables rulesets for a system other than the one it is running on.
- When you specify "spawn", frankenwall will not execute any iptables or tc commands on your machine. Instead, it will send all of the commands in shell-script format to STDOUT so you may redirect it to a file for use as a static script on another system.
