Free subtitle software for linux

Voody Blue Subtitler (aka VBS) is a simple program that allows you to manually synchronize a text file with a video stream, thus creating a subtitles file.

Currently, VBS imports text-only files and producesits output in SubRip format.

VBS requires GTK+ 2.2 or newer and needs mplayer. Besides this it should run in any decent environment.

This is an editor for the KDE environment to edit, make and save subtitles in the SRT subtitle format.

KDE DivX subtitles editor is a good solution for people who create and edit subtitles for DivX movies.
It is able to edit,convert subtitles between different formats, and test subtitles using some linux DivX player (at present Mplayer).
Enhancements:
- After "Save As" correct name on the bar is displayed
- Some compilation problems fixed
- Fixed number of columns in new file after spliting a file
- Fixed problem with editing file created by spliting another one
- Some "segmentation fault" fixes

Jubler is a subtitle editor which can work with *.SUB and *.SRT files. Jubler lets you join, split, and recode into different framerates, delete and remove depending on specific patterns, and edit specific subtitles in place.
Through a graphical interface, it is possible to launch mplayer to test the produced subtitles.
Main features:
- It supports *.SUB and *.SRT file formats, although it is easy to extend it to support other file types.
- You can view the results with mplayer and controll the video flow with a special console. Its again easy to extend it to support more players.
- All encodings supported by Java platform are also supported here (like UTF-8). The user is able to select a list of preffered encodings in order to load the localized subtitle files.
- Splitting, joining, sorting and recoding of subtitles is supported.
- Deleting specific subtitles or subtitle patterns is possible.
- Undo/redo is possible
- The program could also be used under windows, as long as mplayer is in your PATH
- Last but not least: its open source under GNU GPL!

Sinek is a GTK+ video/audio player, capable of supporting all formats libxine supports. At the moment, this includes; Audio MPEG 1, 2, and 3, Vorbis (.ogg), Video MPEG 1 and 2, MPEG 4 (aka OpenDivX), MS MPEG 4 (aka DivX) and motion jpeg.
One of the main differences between Sinek and other popular multimedia players is that it doesnt use skins; instead, it has a standard GTK+ interface. In other words, it works with your GTK+ theme.

- you can adjust font (any X font!) and placement of subtitles on the fly,

vobstripper is a program that copies a .VOB file from stdin to stdout, discarding subtitles and all but one AC3 audio channel. The practical effect is to make the .VOB file smaller by throwing away unused extra information without requiring the .VOB file to be remultiplexed.
This program does not adjust pointers and other information in the .VOB file to cleanly delete the discarded streams. However, the resulting .VOB files are acceptable for input to a program such as dvdauthor that expects to be responsible for filling in the VOBs.
Since vobstripper invalidates the pointers in the .VOB file, a .VOB file that is to be processed by both vobstripper and vobwalker must be processed by vobwalker first.
vobstripper is in the public domain (GPL license).
Enhancements:
- Multiple private stream 1 subchannels can be specified as keepers on the command line.
- Discards MPEG program stream end codes. Ive seen several files on which tools like mpeg2dec and bbdmux silently stop before processing the entire file because of a rogue MPEG program stream end code embedded in the middle of the file.
- Slightly more sophisticated Makfile contributed by a user.

Totem is movie player for the Gnome desktop based on xine and optionally GStreamer.

SIVE, short from Simple iPod Video Encoder, is a graphical tool to make video conversion for iPod Video real simple.
SIVE is a GTK2 frontend to mplayer, mencoder and mp4creator. With it, you convert your movies to play them on your iPod very easily. It currently works under unix OSes (yes, including your linux distro) ); im thinking about Windows porting but thats far from being a priority, since similar tools already exist in the Windows world (and I dont like Windows programming, too).
Its usefulness is pretty clear : it makes converting videos for playing on iPod Video real simple, allowing to select audio tracks and subtitles tracks. No need for end users to browse manpages and documentation to learn how to convert their videos to read them on iPod, which might make them think "geez, its so easy under MacOS and Windows and so difficult in Linux/Unix". This simple GUI does the job.
SIVE produces iPod compliant H.124 videos, by using mencoder to encode and mp4creator to create a container iPod Video can use. It generates the options to be passed to these command line tools in order to create what the user asked (bitrate, audio track, subtitles, resolution, scale, crop). It shows the commands and their results in an embedded terminal so the user can learn how to use these tools manually.
It does not do any conversion itself : this tricky job is left to the tools which are known for doing it well.
