Free space commander software for linux

Space Commander is a game that aims to be similar to Elite and Privateer, with maybe a bit of Trade Wars thrown in.
The project is a remarkably functional space simulation with under 200 lines of code in the main file.
DEPENDENCIES
You need a recent version of Python and some support libraries. The game is currently being written using Python v 2.4.3 but it may work with newer or older versions with some minor tweaking. I intend to be using Python 2.5 and PyGame 1.8 shortly.

Basically you need a pretty complete Python kit. Most Linux distributions should have everything that you need and Windows / OSX users will be able to install it all with a small bit of effort.
To play the MIDI score in Linux you have to install and configure Timidity due to some old code in sdl-mixer which is a pre-dependency of PyGame. If the game crashes and
complains about midi, just comment out the MIDI line in spacecommander.py to disable it.
As to performance issues. I pass the buck. If it runs too slowly then get a faster computer, better graphics card, better operating system, whatever.
The idea of writing this in Python is to have a compromise between ultimate performance and the ability to understand and tinker around with the code.
You could try reducing the number of stars in the galaxy by editing bigbang.py also.
Feel free to re-write the game in hand optimized assembler, but you must send me a copy of your code per the LICENSE.

Enhancements:
- The main engine was completely rewritten and now supports flying a spaceship around a randomly generated galaxy. 2D rendering of objects using PyGame is supported.

Samba Commander is a text mode SMB network commander. In SMBC, you can browse the local network or you can use the search function to find the files.
You can also download/upload files and directories or create them both locally and remotely. SMBC has a resume function and supports UTF-8 characters.

GNOME Commander is file manager aimed at people who want a fast and efficient file manager. GNOME Commander can currently perform most common file operations, and will detect changes to files caused by other programs and update its views without the need for the user to manually reload. The program also supports Copy and Paste, DND and MIME.
The program has some basic FTP support through GnomeVFS, but its not very good. Its good enough to download/upload files, but lacks more advanced functions, like issuing SITE commands.

- Quick device access buttons with automatic mounting and unmounting ("no-mount" option for supermount users).
- Rightclick context menus with the most usual file operations, plus configurable "send-to" favorite applications.

Enhancements:
- This release (apart from the usual bunch of fixes) adds support for Python scripting, user defined keyboard shortcuts, OLE and ODF metatags in advanced file rename templates, and SAMBA authentication.
- More work was done on the following translations: ar, bg, cs, dz, en_GB, fr, it, oc, pl, sl, and sv.

Linux Commander is a powerful file manager for the X Window System.

It is partially modelled after Window Commander for Windows.

Space Racer project is a OpenGL Car Game in a galactic environment.

It aims to be a clone of the well known Stunt Car Racer developed by Geff Crammond, author of Grand Prix I and II.

To play a 3dfx is recommanded. But TNT and Matrox Cards should now work.

If you have a 3dfx, you can take advantage of OpenGL 1.1 in adding this line in config.h:

GNU Midnight Commander is a user-friendly yet powerful file manager and visual shell, useful to novice and guru alike. It provides a clear, user-friendly, and somewhat protected interface to a Unix system while making many frequent file operations more efficient and preserving the full power of the command prompt. After some practice, you will wonder how you could ever live without it.
Being a text mode application, GNU Midnight Commander can be used locally or remotely, on the console or under X Window System. By using full screen space of the terminals, it provides an intuitive user interface to the operating system, aiming to be a useful tool for users with any level of experience, from a newbie to a guru.
GNU Midnight Commander used to support a GNOME interface, which was historically the first file manager for the GNOME project. This interface is no longer part of GNU Midnight Commander.
GNU Midnight Commander runs on POSIX (Unix-like) operating systems, such as GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris, HP-UX and others. It can also be compiled under Cygwin on Windows.

Because GNU Midnight Commander is a full screen program it doesnt run on dummy terminals but anything more advanced will do (like vt100). If your terminal works with vi, emacs, elm or pine it will work with GNU Midnight Commander.

Mr Commander is a file manager based on GTK+ 2.0. It behaves like the Total Commander program, which is available on MS Windows.

It features SMB and FTP support.

Installation

The `configure shell script attempts to guess correct values for various system-dependent variables used during compilation. It uses those values to create a `Makefile in each directory of the package. It may also create one or more `.h files containing system-dependent definitions. Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status that you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, and a file `config.log containing compiler output (useful mainly for debugging `configure).

It can also use an optional file (typically called `config.cache and enabled with `--cache-file=config.cache or simply `-C) that saves the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring. (Caching is disabled by default to prevent problems with accidental use of stale cache files.)

If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try to figure out how `configure could check whether to do them, and mail diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README so they can be considered for the next release. If you are using the cache, and at some point `config.cache contains results you dont want to keep, you may remove or edit it.

The file `configure.ac (or `configure.in) is used to create `configure by a program called `autoconf. You only need `configure.ac if you want to change it or regenerate `configure using a newer version of `autoconf.

Compilers and Options

Some systems require unusual options for compilation or linking that the `configure script does not know about. Run `./configure --help for details on some of the pertinent environment variables.

You can give `configure initial values for configuration parameters by setting variables in the command line or in the environment.

Here is an example:

Compiling For Multiple Architectures

You can compile the package for more than one kind of computer at the same time, by placing the object files for each architecture in their own directory. To do this, you must use a version of `make that supports the `VPATH variable, such as GNU `make. `cd to the directory where you want the object files and executables to go and run the `configure script. `configure automatically checks for the source code in the directory that `configure is in and in `...

If you have to use a `make that does not support the `VPATH variable, you have to compile the package for one architecture at a time in the source code directory. After you have installed the package for one architecture, use `make distclean before reconfiguring
for another architecture.

Installation names

By default, `make install will install the packages files in `/usr/local/bin, `/usr/local/man, etc. You can specify an installation prefix other than `/usr/local by giving `configure the
option `--prefix=PATH.

You can specify separate installation prefixes for architecture-specific files and architecture-independent files. If you give `configure the option `--exec-prefix=PATH, the package will use PATH as the prefix for installing programs and libraries.
Documentation and other data files will still use the regular prefix.

In addition, if you use an unusual directory layout you can give options like `--bindir=PATH to specify different values for particular kinds of files. Run `configure --help for a list of the directories you can set and what kinds of files go in them.

If the package supports it, you can cause programs to be installed with an extra prefix or suffix on their names by giving `configure the option `--program-prefix=PREFIX or `--program-suffix=SUFFIX.
