Sony RM-X2S XMMS Plugin 1.3

Sony RM-X2S XMMS Plugin 1.3

Sony RM-X2S XMMS Plugin plugin lets you control XMMS with a Sony RM- X2S joystick. more>>
Sony RM-X2S XMMS Plugin plugin lets you control XMMS with a Sony RM- X2S joystick. These joysticks are typically shipped with certain car radios. The use of similar devices from other vendors should be possible. The joystick is connected to the standard game port.
Installation:
Compile and install the plugin source with:
./configure
make
make install
You can supply the following options to configure:
--enable-debug
enable debugging prints
--enable-nls
enable localization
You can insert module options into /etc/modules.conf to load the joystick module automatically by make installmodule.
If you are not root, or dont want to install into the global plugin directory use make install-home to install the plugin to your private xmms directory (~/.xmms).
Setup in XMMS
- Now start xmms and get the plugin configuration panel with CTRL+p. Select the plugin and click the Configure button (picture).
- Check the device setting. If you have only one joystick port, the default of /dev/js0 should be fine. (picture)
- Calibrate the joystick. The systems needs to perform 4 measurements each lasting 2 seconds. If you press the calibration button the first measure will start and a popup window will appear after 2 seconds. (picture)
- Press the OFF Button on your Sonystick on click OK. Leave the button pressed during the measurement (2 seconds) until the text in the popup window changes
- Now the same procedure with the MUTE Button
- Now press no button on the sonystick
- Now set the precision to 5. If you experience difficulties when using the joystick (events without touching the joystick or some buttons having the same event) you can alter this setting. Lower values make the joystick more precise, thus harder to control.
- Configure the buttons. A beep indicates that an event was successfully recorded.
- Pressing the OK Button to save the configuration. Cancel will not save any changes made to the configuration.
- Finally you can enable the plugin in the XMMS preferences window.

Python library for PS3 0.1.2

Python library for PS3 0.1.2

Python library for PS3 (Sony Playstation 3) game development under Linux. more>>
Python library for PS3 (Sony Playstation 3) game development under Linux. Includes: rendering to the PS3 frame buffer on a per pixel basis or with blittable objects (solid, masked or alpha blended), support for PS3 controllers and integration with PIL.
As you may know, Ive been writing my PS3 stuff with a view to building up a library suitable for writing games and as I thought about it more the idea of using a scripting language for the game seemed the most logical way forward. I plumped on python as Id used it before for a couple of small jobs and it seemed like a nice language with a lot of support. Plus, it has the advantage of being pre-installed on most Linux distributions and very easy to extend, and so the PS3 library for python was born...
Brief bullet points of the current build:
Support for the PS3 frame buffer on a per pixel basis
Support for blittable objects (solid, masked or alpha blended)
Support for the PS3 controllers
Easy integration with PIL for image manipulation and text rendering
A proof-of-concept breakout game
After about a day and a half development, the core of the library was in place but in a not very visible way. It seemed that the only way I could actually demonstrate this to all be good stuff is by writing a quick game. And breakout is one of the simplest, so I spent another day writing that. Its important to have a good demo on release... So, Ill settle for this half-hearted attempt at a breakout game whose main redeeming feature is that it has alpha transparency on all the blocks!
Just to whet your interest, heres an example of how easy the code can be (taken directly from the test.py file):
image = Blittable(Image.open("miglu.jpg"))
for count in xrange(screen.height-image.height):
screen.clear()
screen.blit(image, (count,count) )
screen.flip()
screen.wait()
Enhancements:
- Adds support for image blitting with the SPUs.
- Currently, using 4 SPUs the alpha blended breakout demo runs at 30fps at 720p.

jrawio 1.0 RC5

jrawio 1.0 RC5

jrawio is a Service Provider Implementation for the Java ImageIO API. more>>
jrawio is a Service Provider Implementation for the Java ImageIO API. It provides the ability to read images coded in a digital "camera raw" format (such as NEF for Nikon or CRW/CR2 for Canon).
jrawio is to be pointed out that jrawio is implemented in 100% pure Java.
In simple words, a Camera RAW format is the dump of the data collected by the camera sensor, with basically no post-processing applied. While it has the pitfall of requiring heavy processing in order to achieve a displayable image, the basic advantage is that any transformatio applied to it is "reversible".
From this point of view a Camera RAW format can be thought as a "digital negative". But dont confuse this with Adobes Digital Negative format (.DNG), which is just the try to define a standard format of RAW images. Indeed every camera manufacturer (e.g. Nikon, Canon, ...) has its own format.
jrawio is presently a Release Candidate for v1.0, so its coming out of beta stage. Please refer also to the Release Notes for information about issues.
It has been tested with about 8,000 photos taken with Nikon D100 and D70 cameras and with about 250 samples of various cameras downloaded from the web. jrawio has been explicitly tested with the following models:
Canon CR2 Digital Rebel, EOS 1D MkII, EOS 1Ds MkII, EOS 350D
Canon CRW D30, EOD 10D, EOS 300D
Leica DNG R8, R9
Minolta MRW DiMAGE 5, DiMAGE 7i, DiMAGE 7Hi
Nikon NEF CoolPix 5400, CoolPix 5700, CoolPix 8700, CoolPix 8800, D1, D100, D1X, D200, D2H, D2X, D50, D70, D70s
Pentax PEF *ist D, *ist DL, *ist DS
Sony SRF F828
Enhancements:
- This release fixes bugs related to application integration.

Gentoo PPC64 PS3 LiveCD Beta

Gentoo PPC64 PS3 LiveCD Beta

Gentoo PPC64 PS3 LiveCD is a Gentoo-based linux distribution for PlayStation 3 gaming console. more>>
With Sonys recent introduction of the PS3, you can now run Linux on it as well as use it as a gaming console. The PlayStation3 is based on a Cell processor and therefore can run most of the ppc64 64ul or 32ul binaries without change. As of now, the kernel does differ.

This project page is commited to Linux running on the PS3. Here you will find all kinds of information related to Gentoo for the PS3, Cell processors, toolchains, and the Gentoo LiveCD for PS3 and PowerMacs.

The latest Livecd is very close to working. Join us on IRC for the latest. To wet your appetite, check out nickthecooks screenshot of the livecd working. Notice the full gnome desktop. You can also see a hi-res screen shot of the gnome-desktop here.
With the right equipment and a little hack (soon), the PS3 should boot into high resolution and include among other things:

- Full gnome desktop 2.16.x
- Sound support with audacious and rythmbox
- Firefox 2 and thunderbird, evolution, epihany, seamonkey

S-Jog 0.6

S-Jog 0.6

S-Jog is a GUI for Sony VAIO Jog Wheel. more>>
S-Jog is a GUI for Sony VAIO Jog Wheel.
S-Jog is a program that uses the Sony Vaio laptops Jog Wheel to launch user applications, adjust the screen brightness, volume, and also to scroll pages up and down (like a mousewheel).
S-Jog pops up when you move the Jog Wheel, then disappears after 3 seconds of inactivity so that it doesnt waste desktop space.
The aim of S-Jog is to give Linux a nice graphical application to manage Jog-Dial wheel on Sony Vaio laptops. It utilizes the Sony Programmable I/O driver in recent 2.4.x kernels or the legacy SPIC driver provided in S-Jog distribution.
Currently, S-Jog is able to launch applications defined in the sjogrc file, adjust the screen brightness level and also the master volume of the sound card. Also S-Jog makes the Jog-Dial work like a mousewheel and it runs in background.
Enhancements:
- README, sjog.1: Updated doc file

DV Video Assembler 0.93

DV Video Assembler 0.93

DV Video Assembler allows you to append multiple Sony DV files. more>>
This application is particularly useful for owners of digital DV video cameras and other people who use the Sony DV video format for high quality video production.

DV Assembler allows you to append multiple Sony DV files with nice looking transition effects for both audio and video. Multiple transition effects are supported, like cross-fade, zoom, blur and a flash effect.

I created DV Assembler because there are no user friendly video editing applications for Linux. Yes, Kino is promising, but its user interface is still a mess and development is slow.

DV Assembler only touches the head and tail parts of the original video files that are needed to create the transition effects. The rest of the video is left untouched, which means zero quality loss.

DV Assembler can also be used to generate video editing scripts that can be run without KDE and Kommander.

Reveal 1.2

Reveal 1.2

Reveal is an easy to use, cross platform EXIF metadata viewer with limited editing capabilities. more>>
Reveal project is an easy to use, cross platform EXIF metadata viewer with limited editing capabilities.
Reveal was designed to present as many details about how a photo was taken in a clear and easy to understand format.
Im finally letting the cat out of the bag. Today Ive released Reveal 1.0, a tiny yet very powerful EXIF metadata viewer and editor. Since Im putting Reveal and Album Shaper 2.2 screenshots on the same page I suppose Ill point out that you can view those here, which includes a great deal of spoilers for the next Album Shaper release.
Reveal kept me busy for a long time.
What started out as adding Exif support to Album Shaper grew, and grew, and grew. Originally I wanted Album Shaper to auto rotate photos during import, which it now does using the CVS code, in addition to being able to show EXIF metadata somehow. EXIF metadata is stored in just about every digital photo, encoding how the photo was taken (f-stop, shutter speed, ISO sensativity, date and time, etc), as well as various processing options (sharpness, saturation, contrast), what white balance was used, if the flash fired, and much much more.
EXIF was designed to keep track of all that stuff for you, but to date looking up how a photo was taken is a rather difficult error prone process. There are a number of text-based EXIF viewers out there. Usually youre prsented with a long list of fields and values, often uninterpreted, and in now particular order. If youre camera didnt record a value but you know it and youd like to enter it your our of luck. If you scanned in a photo you can guarantee such data is not present. Furthermore, most camera makers tend to hide a great deal of the details in proprietary Makernote entries, despite the fact that very good standard Exif tags exist. Jeesh!
Reveal is intended to be a breath of fresh air. Ive selected the settings I think most people will be interested in (shutter speed, aperature, ISO sensativity, flash status/mode, shooting mode, metering mode, focus mode, sensor type, subject distance, focal length and 35mm equiv, digital zoom factor, white balance mode, and contrast, saturation, and sharpness settings).
These fields have been organized into groups of four and annotated with nice icons that reflect the value of a particular field. More generate fields like the date and time a photo was taken, the camera used to take it, the copyright holder and photographer, in addition to any known photo modifications are presented in a primary summary pane. For those of you who would like to get direct access to the Exif data you can do so under a details pane that clearly separates entries using alternating colors.
While Id like to think Reveal is a step ahead in terms of usability, in terms of functionality there are a number of advances. Reveal is built on top of the Qt and Exiv2 libraries so its cross platform.
Today Im providing Windows and Mac OSX binaries in addition to the source. Ive gotten it running under Gentoo Linux so if anyone would like to produce packages for various distributions please send them my way. The OS X binary requires OS X 10.3.9 or later or 10.4 of course. I should be able to add support for 10.2 users in the future if the demand is there.
At this time Reveal does not support internationalization, but a version will be released that supports i18n along side the next Album Shaper release. Id like to think the editing capabilities in addition to Reveals ability to decipher a good deal of proprietary Makernote data will also be appreciated. So enjoy.
Reveal will also be embedded in the next release of Album Shaper as a photo info window that can be pulled up at any time similar to a layers dialog in many image editors.
Id like to also thank Pavel Nemec for putting together Album Shaper 2.1 Suse pacakges. Hopefully Album Shaper will even been included on Suse discs in the future. One can only hope.
Enhancements:
Major Improvements:
- Added read support for: (*not fully tested)
+PNG*
+TIFF
+ARW (Sony)
+CR2 (Canon)
+DNG (Adobe)
+NEF (Nikon)
