SquidRestrict is a Web-based tool that allows multiple time restrictions to be placed on Internet usage for firewalls that use Squid.
Primarily, the focus of SquidRestrict is on the Linux-based firewalls IPCop and Smoothwall.

Enhancements:
- This release updates the writeacls() and restorebackup() functions to backup the squid acl file when saving time restrictions, in order to prevent the restrictions being lost when proxy changes are made.
- This release also adds some basic Javascript validation to prevent unnecessary form submissions.

FTwall 2.02

FTwall 2.02

FTwall is short for Fast Track traffic Firewall, a P2P traffic filtering script, for Kazaa blocking. more>>
FTwall is short for Fast Track traffic Firewall, a P2P traffic filtering script, for Kazaa blocking.
Ftwall-2 is an updated version of the original ftwall-1 software which adds new P2p protocols to the set it can control.
Ftwall-2 is an add-on for linux firewalls that allows the control of "Fast Track" peer-to-peer traffic (such as is used by "Kazaa" and its derivatives), WinMX and others using the OpenNAP protocol.
It is designed to block network traffic from P2P client applications running in the "home" (or "green") network from making access to any peers on the public internet. It is designed primarily for use in networks where the security reigme allows "open access" for outbound connections and "tightly limited" access for inbound ones. Ftwall-2 can be used in networks like this to prevent outbound P2P access from the supported protocols, hence restricting illegal file downloads and uploads.
A Fast track "home network" client that establishes an "outbound" connection is (worryingly) immediately available to accept inbound connections through the established TCP/IP socket - even if the gateway firewall blocks all in-bound connections via "normal" TCP/IP and UDP mechanisms. This is a kind of limited "tunnelling" and gives rise to a number of concerns. Other P2P applications and protocols present similar security challenges. Ftwall solves this (and other) problems for the protocols it understands.
Version 1 of ftwall controlled the Fast Track protocol only (Kazaa et al).
Version 2 of ftwall (the version discussed on this page) adds logic to allow blocking of traffic from WinMX and OpenNap clients using a mechanism based on DNS name wildcards. One simple example is the control of WinMXs native protocol which can be blocked by preventing access to IP addresses resolved from any domain name that ends "winmx.com". OpenNAP is similarly controlled using DNS wildcards to "train" ftwall. See the man page (etc) for these new features by following the links at the bottom of the page.
FTwall-2 runs on Linux-based firewalls using kernel 2.4 (tested with 2.4.20) or later and iptables (test with version 1.2.6). This combination of version numbers is the current set employed by RedHat 8.0 - which is the system on which the software has been developed. The software has also been tested briefly on RedHat 9 and Fedora - but I am awaiting more in-depth news of these and other Linux distributions.
FTwall-2 runs well on the "ipcop" firewall, version 1.3.0 (GPL) with the QUEUE target and string match modules added manually. I believe that it will similarly run on Smoothwall 2 (GPL) although I have not tested this. It will NOT run on Smoothwall 1.0 since this is an "ipchains" based firewall, not an "iptables" one.
FTwall-2 has been tested with the following P2P client applications:
Kazaa 2.1.1, 2.5-beta2, 2.5.1
Kazaa Lite 2.0.2, K++ 2.4.3
iMesh 4.1 build 132, 4.2 build 138
Grokster 1.7
WinMX 3.31
Version restrictions:
- Ftwall requires Linux kernel version 2.4, equipped with "iptables" and the "QUEUE" target. The "ip_string" match module of iptables is desirable, but not required.
- Ftwall works with the "current" version of the Fast track, WinMX and OpenNAP network protocols at the time of writing (July 2004). It is possible that it will need to be re-worked if the protocols are changed in future.
- Ftwall does not block the "SOCKS PROXY" connection option of FastTrack. For a complete lock-down, the firewall must block this style of traffic.

Dnsmasq 2.39

Dnsmasq 2.39

Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP server. more>>
Dnsmasq is lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP server. Dnsmasq is designed to provide DNS and, optionally, DHCP, to a small network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the global DNS.
The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of diskless machines.
Dnsmasq is targeted at home networks using NAT and connected to the internet via a modem, cable-modem or ADSL connection but would be a good choice for any small network where low resource use and ease of configuration are important.
Supported platforms include Linux (with glibc and uclibc), *BSD and Mac OS X. Dnsmasq is included in at least the following Linux distributions: Gentoo, Debian, Slackware, Suse, Smoothwall, IP-Cop, floppyfw, Firebox, LEAF, Freesco, CoyoteLinux and Clarkconnect. It is also available as a FreeBSD port and is used in Linksys wireless routers and the m0n0wall project.
Main features:
- The DNS configuration of machines behind the firewall is simple and doesnt depend on the details of the ISPs dns servers
- Clients which try to do DNS lookups while a modem link to the internet is down will time out immediately.
- Dnsmasq will serve names from the /etc/hosts file on the firewall machine: If the names of local machines are there, then they can all be addressed without having to maintain /etc/hosts on each machine.
- The integrated DHCP server supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and multiple networks and IP ranges. It works across BOOTP relays and supports DHCP options including RFC3397 DNS search lists. Machines which are configured by DHCP have their names automatically included in the DNS and the names can specified by each machine or centrally by associating a name with a MAC address in the dnsmasq config file.
- Dnsmasq caches internet addresses (A records and AAAA records) and address-to-name mappings (PTR records), reducing the load on upstream servers and improving performance (especially on modem connections).
- Dnsmasq can be configured to automatically pick up the addresses of its upstream nameservers from ppp or dhcp configuration. It will automatically reload this information if it changes. This facility will be of particular interest to maintainers of Linux firewall distributions since it allows dns configuration to be made automatic.
- On IPv6-enabled boxes, dnsmasq can both talk to upstream servers via IPv6 and offer DNS service via IPv6. On dual-stack (IPv4 and IPv6) boxes it talks both protocols and can even act as IPv6-to-IPv4 or IPv4-to-IPv6 forwarder.
- Dnsmasq can be configured to send queries for certain domains to upstream servers handling only those domains. This makes integration with private DNS systems easy.
- Dnsmasq supports MX records and can be configured to return MX records for any or all local machines.
Enhancements:
- This release adds some features to the log subsystem: it is now possible to log directly to a file, and to log asynchronously to syslog.
- More detailed logging of DHCP transactions is available.
- DHCP options can now be specified by name instead of by number.
- DHCP configuration can now use information from a DHCP relay agent.
- There are a few minor bugfixes (notably failure of TFTP with --listen-address).
- Some translations have been updated.

chilli_applet 1.1

chilli_applet 1.1

chilli_applet is a script which creates an applet within your GNOME panel. more>>
chilli_applet project is a script which creates an applet within your GNOME panel. The applet shows the status of the smoothwall with a smiley :) or a sad :( face. When you click on it with the left mouse button it pops up a window showing the uptime and allowing you to Connect, Disconnect or open your web browser to the smoothwall status page (these actions are performed using chilli_control, above).

For popping up the window it requires my other program, pgrompt. The popup window is a bit superfluous because there are also menu options for doing the same things in the applets right click m enu. If you dont want the popup window, you dont need pgprompt.

You can easily edit what the applet shows if you dont like the smiley.

Note that although this is an applet, it doesnt get restarted automatically - youll need to make sure it gets run when you log in. Its position in your panel should be remembered fine though.

Because the applet uses the perl-GTK (or Gtk-Perl?) perl modules, you will will need to get them too.

chilli_control 1.1

chilli_control 1.1

chilli_control is a script that takes a command-line argument telling it what to do with your smoothwall, ie connect, disconnect more>>
chilli_control is a script that takes a command-line argument telling it what to do with your smoothwall, ie connect, disconnect, or get the status. This version is designed for smoothwall version 2.0 beta.

You will need to edit the script to set it up for your smoothwall. If you use the same smoothwall version, you will probably only really need to change the firewall IP address and port, maybe tell it your web browser, and edit the getPassword subroutine to somehow generate your password (for example by prompting you for it, or extracting it out of a file, or by putting it directly in the script).

If you use a different smoothwall version you may need to change the page locations for the dial for dialling and status pages. You probably know the URL of the page that shows you the status, and you can find out the dial page by looking at the source html for whichever page contains the Connect (or Dial) and Disconnect buttons, and look at the ACTION= tag of the form which contains those buttons.

Also you may need to change it to use http instead of https - I dont know as I have never used another smoothwall version.

Usage: ./chilli_control Connect|Disconnect|Status|view

DNALinux 0.5b (592)

DNALinux 0.5b (592)

DNALinux is a Linux distribution with bioinformatics software pre-installed. more>>
DNALinux is a Linux distribution with bioinformatics software pre-installed.
We believe that this distro fills an empty niche. Specialized biotech software usually is released as source code only and its not packaged for easy installation on "mainstream" Linux.
Most scientific software is "author software" and it is not easy to install (that is particulary true for Biotech people). As we told before, all the software is pre-installed. Since the distro works from CD, you dont even have to install the operation system.
Since is a live-CD, no permanent changes can be made to your system (unless you make a hard disk install). Its not easy to apply a security patch to this kind of distros, thats why you shouldnt used under a "raw" (unprotected) Internet conection.
So you are advised to use it inside a trusted network. If you want a Linux distro to act as a firewall, we recommend SmoothWall.
Enhancements:
- The server edition features a live NCBI BLAST server.
- The H5N1 genomic sequence is included, but you can install you own sequence database.
- This version is based on Slax 5.10 and Apache 2.
