Network Communicator 2.0.0
Network Communicator is a simple script for sending and receiving data over TCP/UDP connections. more>>
Network Communicator is a simple script for sending and receiving data over TCP/UDP connections.
It can be useful for testing firewall configurations, routing tables, and similar things.
I had originally written two scripts for testing TCP only: a talker and a listener. Upon failure to properly modify them to support UDP only, I made Netcom. It allows the sending and receiving of TCP or UDP data to arbitrary IPs/Ports and optional from/to files.
Im sure there are already tools like this out there like netcat, but wasnt able to get netcat working properly for UDP also. Either way, here you go and enjoy!
Launch Netcom with no options to view the usage.
Enhancements:
- A complete re-write to support arbitrary source/destination and port forwarding (not tunneling).

ETH Lecture Communicator 1.0
ETH Lecture Communicator is a tool to improve classroom interaction between an instructor and their students. more>>
ETH Lecture Communicator is a tool to improve classroom interaction between an instructor and their students.
ETH Lecture Communicator enables the instructor to create and carry out in-class online assessments, and facilitates organized instant communication for large classes.
It is intended to improve the overall quality of a lecture by providing the instructor with continuous feedback on the students understanding of the material.
Enhancements:
- The remaining known bugs were fixed.
- The most annoying of these was the seemingly random resending of no longer existing questions.
- Some GUI ugliness was cleaned up as well, especially for Linux systems.

mod_roaming 2.0.0
mod_roaming is a Netscape Roaming Access module for Apache. more>>
mod_roaming is a Netscape Roaming Access module for Apache. With mod_roaming you can use your Apache webserver as a Roaming Access server for your browser. This allows you to store your browser preferences, bookmarks, address books, cookies etc. on the server so that you can use (and update) the same settings from any browser that can access the server.
Supported browsers are:
- Netscape Communicator 4.5x through 4.8x
- Mozilla 1.8 (currently in beta, see Bugzilla for progress)
This version has been ported to Apache 2.0
Main features:
- mod_roaming allows your existing Apache webserver to double as a Roaming Access server.
- mod_roaming implements the GET, HEAD, PUT, DELETE and MOVE methods that make Roaming Access work.
- Specifically mod_roaming implements the non-standard MOVE method so that you do not have to set the li.prefs.http.useSimplePut preference to true.
- mod_roaming automatically creates directories for new users to keep administration simple.
- mod_roaming does not allow anonymous access to the roaming access files, does not allow users to read or write each others roaming access files, and is generally very strict about the requests it allows. Only that which is needed by Netscape Communicator 4.5 or Mozilla is allowed.
- mod_roaming can be installed as a DSO (Dynamic Shared Object) module.

gpkcs 0.7.2
gpkcs11 provides support functions to make the development of support for new tokens. more>>
gpkcs11 provides support functions to make the development of support for new tokens easier and contains a complete software token, as well as an automated testing environment.
gpkcs serves as a testing tool in the development of new applications that contain cryptographic support.
A core of the functions have been implemented, but still need a lot of testing. The following features are lacking at this time (03/00), but will be implemented ASAP:
- propper SO/token reset support
- thread save
- multi session/multi app support
If you have need for another feature not yet implemented, give me a holler. Even though I will probably ask for your cooperation, I might bump it up on my feature list. But I consider this library only of use to the hardened crypto developer, therefore will assume that you are able to help further the development.
This code is now usable with the Netscape Communicator! I found out that it is due to a collision between symbols in the libcrypto and symbols within the Communicator. Therefore this release now does some magic to the OpenSSL code before compiling and linking it to the ceay token.

Fortify 1.4.6
Fortify provides full strength, 128-bit encryption facilities to the export editions of Netscape Navigator and Communicator. more>>
Fortify provides full strength, 128-bit encryption facilities to the export editions of Netscape Navigator and Communicator. If you routinely use Netscapes export-grade web browsers, (i.e. the ones you can download from the Internet), then you need Fortify. It is easy to illustrate why you need Fortify. Take a look at this diagram. Follow the links on the navigation bar below to find out more about Fortify or to download a copy for yourself.
Fortify is free for all forms of non-commercial use, including individual, educational, research, or charitable use. Please refer to the Copyright for full details.
Commercial use, or commercial re-distribution, of Fortify is controlled under the terms of the software Copyright, and requires a formal licence. However, the terms are deliberately simple, and, more often than not, they are purely a formality.
Organisations should, in the first instance, register their interest in using Fortify, via the contact enquiry form .
When comparing Fortify to alternative strong encryption solutions, such as SSL relays, SSL proxies, or Java-based applet solutions, there are a number of advantages which has to be considered:
1. It is more secure. A Fortified browser performs strong encryption internally. When connecting to a full strength web server, you have a true, end-to-end, strongly encrypted channel. With SSL proxies, at least one segment of the channel remains weakly encrypted.
2. It is faster. When using a Fortified browser, the data in the communications channel is not re-encrypted as it travels between the browser and the web server. It also has fewer network "hops" to traverse. And, unlike some alternative solutions, no supplementary Java applets are involved. All these factors result in better network performance, and less load on your PC or workstation.
3. It is simpler. A Fortified browser requires no additional certificates for its correct operation. Indeed, no other browser reconfigurations are needed at all. It is easy to install.
4. It is intranet friendly. A Fortified browser can be readily installed on a LAN file server and shared to a group of users. No further installation effort is required on each individual workstation or PC. In medium or large scale networks, this can lead to substantial savings in administrative time and effort.
Main features:
- In the Netscape 2.x and 3.x browsers, Fortify provides full strength, 128-bit encryption facilities. These are used when connecting to an encrypting web server (with the SSL protocol). Without Fortify, the export-grade web browsers are limited to 40-bit encryption facilities, which are substantially weaker, and have been demonstrated to be "crackable".
-
- In the Netscape 4.x browsers, Fortify provides these same 128-bit encryption features, plus the ability to generate 1024-bit RSA keys internally (these are typically used for client certificates), plus the ability to send and receive e-mail messages using strong 128-bit encryption (with the S/MIME protocol).
-
- Further details are provided in the following sections of this document.

Grendel 19990514
Grendel is a Java mail client. more>>
[COPYRGHT=1]
You may recall that in 1997, Netscape embarked on a project to rewrite Navigator/Communicator in Java. This project (code named "Xena," but sometimes referred to by the press as "Javagator") was cancelled before completion.
Grendel is the mail-news portion of the Xena project written in Java. Its goal is to be a true cross-platform application with a feature set that satisfies the poweruser.
Grendel was originally developed as a part of the "Javagator" project at Netscape. This project was cancelled before completion after 3 years of development. After the source for Grendel was released other people started to work toward completing it for about another 2 years. The original release was therefore incomplete.
The build system is currently being redone to use Apache Ant instead of Makefiles. The easiest way to compile Grendel in its current state is to grab a copy of JCreator and create a Grendel project in the directory and compile it. A lot of test files are currently being separated out into different directories so if a certain file isnt compiling nicely, its probably because its a broken test file that can be deleted from your tree safely.
Were also in the process of moving Grendel from its own XML format to a Mozilla-friendly XUL format using the MozCreator Java XUL Parser API. Wed also like to contain all resources into one easy to manage resource folder instead of dumping them all over the source tree.
Why have Grendel when we have Thunderbird?
A primary goal with Grendel is restoring the libraries contained in the email client to full state as well as providing a working email program. Having a Java port of many of the Mozilla libraries from C++ to Java would be very valuable to many projects. The code has a lot of potential and having the Mozilla platform available for Java programmers can be a invaluable resource for Java programmers wishing to utilize email features easily. Its Java design eliminates some of the problems of a C++ design like Thunderbird. For example, Java has garbage collection and no restriction of language features in order to maintain cross-platform compatibility (like with C++ and lack of feature usage like templates for compatibility).
