xmountains 2.7
xmountains is a project which renders a fractal mountain range. more>>
xmountains is a project which renders a fractal mountain range.
xmountains is a classic X11 hack that renders a fractally-generated mountain range that slowly scrolls across your desktop.
The basic idea behind a fractal landscape is to generate a continuous surface which varies in height randomly but with the random variation obeying a particular statistical law.
In the case of a fractal landscape the average difference in height between pairs of points separated by a distance l should go as a power law in l.
If you are only interested in random terrain generation rather than fractal self-similarity then you could use other functions of l that tend to zero as l tends to zero.
If the function does not tend to zero then the result will not be continuous
Enhancements:
- Added a -n flag to set the number of colours.
- This changes the same parameter as -B but you request total number of colours.

Virtual server monitor 0.5
Virtual server monitor (vsmon) is a monitoring tool for Linux-VServer. more>>
Virtual server monitor (vsmon) is a monitoring tool for Linux-VServer that gives a system administrator a global view of all vservers running on his park.
For now, it does not offer control over the vservers life cycle (e.g. provisioning, start, stop, and restart operations). To use vsmon, you must deploy one backend on each vserver host and one frontend, preferably in its own vserver.
Enhancements:
- The frontend was reworked to display a summary of all hosts.
- An owner can be assigned to each vserver.
- The backend can be used on hosts without Linux-VServers, and it no longer obtains IP addresses.
- The libdnet dependency was removed.
- The parsing of /proc/"pid"/stat now works for kernel 2.6.18.
- A Nagios plugin was added, which enables the use of the vsmon backend to monitor a host disk, memory, and swap.
- The plugin monitors all mount points according to an "intelligent" algorithm, which determines warning and critical thresolds as a function of the total size of the partition.

Software Engineering Environment 0.07
Software Engineering Environment is an information manufacturing platform for software development. more>>
Software Engineering Environment (SEE) is frame for manufacturing information. It is implemented in sevlet and xml, and is used by the web-browser.
Software Engineering Environment (SEE) attempts to provide the information manufacturing platform for software development.
SEE is a free project, that is the author will provide all of its source code at the same time.
It runs in any servlet environment (The author merely verified in the Win and Linux environment), not using any special technique and needs no auxiliary program.
All of its data are saved in XML files, and need not database. (The future release will support the option of saving data, so that the user can select some free database, such as mysql, or commercial database to improve SEE speed.)
This means that the user can run SEE without any money. (Tomcat is a free servlet environment.)
User uses all SEE functions with the web-browser. So information sharing is very convenient.
SEE supports Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and English now.( It will support any language if someone will translate.) User can switch to interfaces in different language at any time when SEE is running. And user can add language translations which will work at once.
The main body of SEE is a frame for information manufacturing. All information included in it can be costumed dynamically and all changes will get into effect immediately. This means that the user can modify or add her/his own information structure as will at any time.
SEE provides various predefined selections for information attributes, which correspond various predefined information manufacturing patterns. The user can focus on the information description when costuming information definition, and the system will implement the functions automatically. This is the core of SEE. Most functions of SEE are in this model.
The default information definition of SEE is the result that the author understands what is the Software Engineering.
Although the target of SEE is helping for software development, actually, user can use it to design any type information, such as book registering, personnel lists, and financial reports etc.
The speed of SEE is not bad. Reading and writing 20000 records needs no more than 1 second. At present, the sorting speed is 9 seconds for 5000 records. (The testing platform is 1.8G CPU and 256M memory)
Enhancements:
- The data interface to prepare supporting databases.
- The databases are not supported in this release.
- A new interface style "Beautiful Flowers".
- These flowers are photoed in parks in this year by the author.
- The author likes the honeybee who holds a flower in its mouth very much. It is the first cartoon figure by the author. It will appear when you save wrong data. :)
- The function of "Personal Message".
- User can only query the messages sent by and sent to herself/himself. And user can only remove the messages sent to herself/himself.
- After a user read a message sent to her/him, SEE will mark it as "have_read" automatically.
- The number of new arrived messages will be shown in the interface.
- The data privileges management
- When user "Remove All" or "Modify All", the "base conditions" will be checked at first. That is user can only do what she/he can do.
- The Password fields values can not be visited, except when the user, who owns the "Import" privilege to current data, exports the data.
- All the data structures of ACL tables are changed! Their keywords become the "Title". This will permit user define better ACL.
- And the "condition" in the ACL tables are implemented completely. Now any "SEE conditions" is valid.
- Snapshot for image file
- When list the data, a snapshot will be shown for the image files type, which may end with jpg/jpeg/gif/png.
- Data sorting concerned with langauges.
- Thus when sorting data in Chinese, the result is Chinese result.
- General users can not visit the "User" table! Then they can not fill in many data!
- This is a fatal bug! This means all former releases can not be used actually!
- Now all ACL tables are redesigned.
- When a new user is added without password, SEE will add some password itself! Then this new user can never login!
- This is another fatal bug!
- In the last English release, which is 0.06, the ACL data are in Chinese!
- So the English users can not use SEE at all~~
- This is still a fatal bug!
- The "Risk Items" in the table "Deviation Handling" is wrong defined.
- This will cause an error information when user clicks the "Select" button.
- The values of Password fields can be visited when query or export.
- Although the values are meaningless encoded codes, they are still security thread.
- When some quota marks in the key values, pages will report errors and the function buttons, such as Modify and Remove, can not act!
- This is because quota is also an element of web page.
- When the interface language changes, the language in audit records changes too!
- This is not permitted. Language of all data is determined when SEE is installed and can not change with interface!

Python Traffic Camera Analyzer
Python Traffic Camera Analyzer is an automated traffic camera congestion analysis tool. more>>
Python Traffic Analyzer is a Python base class and sample driver script written to retrieve and manipulate images from the TrafficLand cameras and calculate a numeric value representing the current traffic flow.
PyTrAn, an example driver script, an image collector and an image mask creator are available for download from the link shown at the bottom. To use the PyTrAn package begin by choosing a camera that you wish to analyze, for this example well use the camera captioned above.
We want to construct a mask over the area of the image that we are interested in, namely the road. In this particular example the road takes up the majority of the image but that is not always the case.
We will apply the mask over captured images to fine tune the area over which we are looking for movement. To create the mask we will first need to collect a sequential series of snapshots from the target camera. The image_collector.py script was written for this task:
$ mkdir mask_200003
$ cd mask_200003
$ ../image_collector.py 200003 30
Collecting 30 images...
30
Done.
The script is hard coded to capture images on a 2-second delay. The delay is necessary to ensure the image has changed. I believe 2-seconds to be the absolute minimum. Once complete, 30 images numbered 1 through 30 will be created in the current directory.
We construct a mask from these captured images by creating a diff-image for each sequential image pair and then adding each diff-image together. Naturally, a script was written to automate this task as well:
$ ../mask_maker.py 1 30
Creating a diff for each sequential image pair.
Diffing 29
Creating the initial mask from the first image pair.
Adding the rest of the diffs to the mask.
Masking 29
Done.
A number of .diff files are generated in this process. These files repesent the movement between individual sequence pairs.
The .diff files are simply intermediary files, the important bit is the mask file, which is generated as the sum of all differences.
The mask file may be dirty (as in this case) and require manual cleanup. The basic shape of the road however is clearly visible, evidence that we can with minimal effort automate the mask generation process. Also, this run was conducted at night, day-time images yield better results.
There are a few final steps we need to take before we can use the example PyTrAn driver script. First we need to convert the mask to ASCII (noraw) format:
$ pnmnoraw mask > mask_200003.ascii
Then we need to open an ImageMagick display window and get its X-window-ID using xwininfo. Finally, update camera_id and window_id in pytran_sampling.py and launch the driver:
$ ../pytran_sampling.py

DEBUG> refreshing image in 3 secs

5 minute sample[35]: 12.42
5 minute sample[40]: 10.53
5 minute sample[45]: 9.06
5 minute sample[50]: 7.85
The sampling script will take 5 minute samples at varying color thresholds. The optimal threshold must be manually chosen. Furthermore, you will need to sample the traffic ratios during both heavy and light traffic times to get a good feel for your acceptable range. Also, keep in mind that the traffic ratio value is simply the percent change detected, or in other words the movement detected within the masked region. This means that a completely empty road will register similar values to a road so congested it looks like a parking lot. The time of day can be combined with the traffic ration to determine the logical truth.
With this task implemented and abstracted more complex systems can be built. When I find the time Id like to create a system that will take multiple potential travel routes and times, and during the travel time e-mail the traveler with the best route to take. Another idea I had would be to record the traffic flow values for each camera, for each day and for each half hour interval. Travelers and other interested parties can then analyze traffic patterns to determine the fastest route dependant on date/time.

Travelers and other interested parties can then analyze traffic patterns to determine the fastest route dependant on date/time.

khdapsmon 0.1.2
khdapsmon is a monitor primarily for the Hard Drive Active Protection System (HDAPS) found in IBM ThinkPads. more>>
khdapsmon is a monitor primarily for the Hard Drive Active Protection System (HDAPS) found in IBM ThinkPads. Its primary interface is a system tray icon that indicates whether the queue is frozen or not on the selected hard disk device.
This is similar to the tray icon found on the pre-installed OS on ThinkPads. khdapsmon project should work with other systems similar to the ThinkPads, such as those found in Apple PowerBooks but this has not been tested and is probably dependent upon kernel code that is not yet available.
A status dialog also prints out useful information like accelerometer status and keyboard/mouse activity status. It also allows for the selection of the monitored device if you have more than one hard disk that supports queue freezing.
WARNING: THIS PROGRAM DOES NOT PARK DISK HEADS BASED ON ACCELEROMETER DATA. That is the job of the hdapsd daemon. The author is not responsible for lost data or other damage resulting from a misconfigured HDAPS setup. In fact, no one is responsible for any damage resulting from anything except you. But since you are a seasoned user of open-source software, you already knew that.
Please mail me if you have any problems (see the source archive README for my address). PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE SUPPORT QUERIES IN THE COMMENTS SECTION OF KDE-APPS.ORG. I also do not want basic queries about computers, KDE, or Linux not related to khdapsmon. Im not running a consulting business and I dont want to. Feedback or suggestions for the program are most welcome, however, both at kde-apps.org and in my inbox.
Please read the documentation for this and more information, including system requirements.
Note: GUI is changed but screenshot upload appears to be broken.

Mountain Climbing Journal for liux 2.4.9
Means to publish journal entries and other content to the World Wide Web. more>> The Mountain Climbing Journal (MCJ) is a free standalone journal application released under the GPL that runs on Windows (98-Vista), MacOS X, or GNU/Linux (SUSE, Red Hat, and others) systems. The MCJ does not require a web server to manage the entries. Journal entries can be private or they can easily be published using the content management (CMS) features as a complete website.
The MCJ categorizes journal entries by using keywords based on a user chosen list of categories, as well as by person, place, thing, and time. The keywords are generated by simply highlighting the keyword and clicking the appropriate icon. Navigation of the resulting collection of keywords and articles is quick and easy, with the keywords showing up in red in the journal entry box when chosen. MCJ uses icons for the main journal window that are not specific to a particular language.
MCJ provides a means to publish journal entries and other content to the World Wide Web with a content management system (CMS). Unlike most CMSs, MCJ does not require a server-side scripting language. The website is generated as HTML and one RSS XML file. Many of the decisions about how the website will look are already decided. There is, though, quite a bit of variation.
MCJ stores all data in a SQLite database. Although there is a cost in performance, all changes are immediately committed and the database is closed to prevent corruption.<<less

astGUIclient is a GUI client application for the Asterisk open-source PBX.
This is a suite of programs that are designed to interact with the Asterisk Open-Source PBX Phone system at a client computer level to extend the functionality of your phone and system.
The suite of software is designed to work with an Asterisk system that has Zap(T1/E1/PSTN),IAX or SIP trunks and SIP/IAX/Zap phones.
The main GUI application, astGUIclient, is a set of PHP web-based scripts utilizing Javascript and XMLHTTPRequest functions that work through a browser to give real-time information and functionality with nothing more than an internet browser on the client computer.
Another component included with the astGUIclient package is the VICIDIAL auto-dialer. This is a list dialer(another real-time web-client) that can be added to Asterisk and is highly configurable with detailed logging. VICIDIAL can dial one-call-at-a-time or you can put it in auto-dial mode and it acts as a predictive dialer. VICIDIAL also can function as an ACD for inbound calls or for Closer calls coming from VICIDIAL fronters and even allows for remote agents that may only have a phone.
The software suite also includes a from-scratch software installation document, full English and Spanish versions of the web-clients and admin pages, and the Asterisk Central Queue System(ACQS) which allows for optimized and streamlined Asterisk integration.
This group of applications is designed to run on top of just about any version of Asterisk so no messing around with the Asterisk source code is necessary. For more information see the system requirements. astGUIclient is not an Asterisk configuration utility, it is an end-user Graphical User Interface.
All astGUIclient software elements are distributed freely through the GPL with no warranty.

Monster Masher 1.8
Monster Masher is a mashem-up action game for GNOME. more>>
Monster Masher is an action game for the Gnome desktop environment.
In the old days, before man entered the world, the gnomes were abundant. Through centuries of hard labour, only slightly eased by the levitational powers provided to them by their god, they bored out shafts and caves in the mountains. Always seeking the precious stones and valuable ore...
But the gnomes dug too deep. So the story begins.
The basic idea is that you, as levitation worker gnome, has to clean the caves for monsters that want to roll over you. You do the cleaning by mashing the monsters with stone blocks. Take a look at the screenshots page to see how this looks like.
Main features:
- Mash your way through 30 levels (for hours of fun)
- Four kinds of monsters: stupid monsters, stupid-but-hard monsters, intelligent monsters, egg-laying monsters
- Power-up gems for invisibility, exploding the nearby monsters and freezing all monsters
- Easy, medium and hard difficulty levels (for even more hours of fun!)
- Support for two simultanous players (cooperative)
- Automatic support for large tiles for large displays
