Phorum 5.1.24a

Phorum 5.1.24a

Phorum is a web based message board written in PHP. more>>
Phorum project is a web based message board written in PHP. Phorum is designed with high-availability and visitor ease of use in mind.

Features such as mailing list integration, easy customization and simple installation make Phorum a powerful add-in to any website.

As of Phorum 5.0, PHP 4.2.x or higher is required. Some people have used it with earlier versions, but we can not support you on it. There were some key changes in that version that are beneficial to Phorum.

You can get PHP from the PHP site or if you are leasing web space, your provider may already have it installed. As database there is currently only MySQL supported while it should be possible to port the database layer to other databases. MySQL is available from MySQL AB. It is OpenSource. Just download, decompress, configure and go.

Another great thing about Phorum is that it is OpenSource software and is licensed under the Phorum License (Very similar to the PHP License and Apache License). This means it is free! But you need to be sure and read the license before using it.

libsexier 1.0 Beta 1

libsexier 1.0 Beta 1

libsexier is a sexy cairo widget library for gtk/gnome. more>>
libsexier is a sexy cairo widget library for gtk/gnome.

Currently only one widget is in this new library, fittsmenu, find out more at http://www.qdh.org.uk

You can build it like so:

./configure
make

Once built you can cd examples and run ./fittsmenu to try it out. There have been many interesting comments regarding this new menu, and some misconceptions about the way it works. As a result there are some interesting new features I want to add to the fittsmenu widget, however some of these features are very difficult (slice scaling for instance) to put together so please be patient.

If you’d like to know more or get involved please email me about it. As this is in the very very early stages of development I’m very curious to hear peoples opinions and rants about what I’m doing.

Orca Interactive Forum Script 1.1

Orca Interactive Forum Script 1.1

Orca Interactive Forum Script is an interactive Web-based forum script that is based on AJAX technology, more>>
Orca Interactive Forum Script is an interactive Web-based forum script that is based on AJAX technology,
In the world of accelerating technologies you dont want archaic forum software. You want something new, fresh, classy, stylish and sexy - just like Orca.
Orca introduces a new approach to building online discussion boards. The main focus in Orca is given to self-moderation - it provides tools to build a community without -moderators or administrators. It gives true freedom.
Main features:
AJAXy
- AJAX is cool and trendy, but whats more important - it makes web apps work better. Orca is an AJAX forums script, using AJAX exactly where it should be used. This brings unique user experiences and considerable server load savings.
Self-ruling
- Forums need close attention to run smoothly. Orca doesnt. We built Orca as a self-moderated community script, which can work effectively without any moderators whatsoever. This is the main difference, and Orca will be getting better at it.
Integratable
- You might already have a website, and it might already have a good database of users. Orca is remarkably easy to integrate with your existing user database. You just add it to your site, and it accepts existing members with their photos and passwords.
GPL-licensed
- Free community needs a free forum script. Orca is completely free, open-source and free in terms of licensing. It is distributed under GPL license, which should uncover its potential and make it #1 forum software on the net.
Enhancements:
- This release added a live post tracker, "Sticky" topics, an advanced WYSIWYG post editor, a "Reply with quote" option, and wider support for hosting setups.

KMSBII for Slackware 2.1.0

KMSBII for Slackware 2.1.0

KDE Menu Sidebar Image Improvement is a simple improvement for your KDE Menu. more>>
KDE Menu Sidebar Image Improvement is a simple improvement for your KDE Menu that replaces default KDE Menu Sidebar image with one designed specifically for your Slackware GNULinux distribution.
Having say a Slackware or Debian or FreeBSD or any other OS/distribution logo instead of default KDE gear may be a much better choice for those of you who are just in love with your favorite *nix.
Personalized it looks sexy, it looks witty, it stresses the facts.
This project proved to be a little success because people seem to appreciate it.
So, now here we are with updated package again and it is my pleasure to hear from you that youve given it a try.
Enhancements:
- Project structure has been redefined so that it is now template based and extensible. This is basically a first attempt to unify all types of KMSBII presented at kde-look.org.
- Installation script has been dramastically improved; added new features to control the installation process and the ability to perform post-installation actions; run `./install.sh help for more information. The script is quite verbose now and informs user of every action performed in a user-friendly manner;
- Abbreviations of the project related names have been introduced to provide a convenient way to refer to them. See "ABBREVIATIONS" section of `./install.sh help output;
- Graphic source files as well as KMSBI files have been changed once again, changes have been made to achieve the best look of the KMSBI;
- Added KMSBII for Slackware GNULinux distribution v11.0.0;
- Updated documentation.
- Licensing agreement has been introduced to protect intellectual property and rights of its owner. See COPYING file for more details and "Licensing Agreement" section of this file for short explanations on how this licensing agreement works.

BubbleMon 1.46

BubbleMon 1.46

BubbleMon is a system monitoring dockapp, visually based on the GNOME BubbleMon applet. more>>
BubbleMon is a system monitoring dockapp, visually based on the GNOME "BubbleMon" applet. Basically, it displays CPU and memory load as bubbles in a jar of water. But thats where similarity ends.

New bubblemon-dockapp features translucent CPU load meter (for accurate CPU load measurement), yellow duck swimming back and forth on the water surface (just for fun), and fading load average and memory usage screens.

Either of the info screens can be locked to stay on top of water/duck/cpu screen, so that you can see both statistics at once. Pretty nifty toy for your desktop. Supports Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Solaris 2.6, 7 and 8. Code has been thoroughly optimized since version 1.0, and even with all the features compiled in, BubbleMon still uses very little CPU time.

Load Average screen locked at about 20% looks particularly sexy (pictured at right). All the extra "bloated" features can be compiled out or disabled on command-line, if you prefer original "BubbleMon" look.

Papercut NNTP Server 0.9.13

Papercut NNTP Server 0.9.13

Papercut NNTP Server is a NNTP server written in Python. more>>
Papercut NNTP Server is a news server written in 100% pure Python. It is intended to be
extensible to the point where people can develop their own plug-ins and by that integrate the NNTP protocol to their applications.

The server is compliant with most of the RFC0977 standards (when they make sense and are needed) and implements a lot of RFC1036 and RFC2980 extensions to the NNTP protocol. It was tested against Netscape News, Mozilla News and tin (under Solaris) and it works properly.

The original need for this server was to integrate my PHP related web site forums with an NNTP gateway interface, so people could list and read the messages posted to the forums on their favorite News reader.

At first it wasnt intended to support message posting, but it made sense to allow it after seeing how effective the tool was.

The concept of storage modules was created exactly for this. I would create a Python
class to handle the inner-workins of Phorum and MySQL and if I ever wanted to integrate the server with another type of software, I would just need to write a new storage module class.

Anyway, back to the technical praise. Papercut NNTP Server forking-based on UNIX platforms and should be reasonably fast (that means basically: its pretty fast, but dont try serving 1000 connection at a time).

The best thing about the application is that it is very simple to extend it.

NNTPCache 3.0.2

NNTPCache 3.0.2

NNTPCache is a proxy cache newsgroups. more>>
NNTPCache is a proxy cache newsgroups.

NNTPCache (efficiently) executes on the localhost pretending to be an NNRP news reading server. In fact, what it does is pass certain NNTP commands through to real (remote and possibly local) news-servers based on various pattern matching rules.

NNTPCache then takes the output from those servers and caches & indexes it in funky ways (much case specific magic goes into this). The next time such information is asked for, or other information which can be logically inferred from the previously collated information, it is sent directly from the cache, without consulting the remote servers.

NNTPCache can transparently merge local newsgroups & multiple remote feeds (usually handled by INN) with remote NNRPD and NNTPCache servers to create mind-bogglingly large "virtual" newsfeeds, without having to negotiate for standard feeds or allocating anything like bandwidth or drive space normally required (normally around 3-10G/day).

NNTPCache is an obsessive SPAM killer. NNTPCache has full support for cryptographically signed NoCem messages, and if enabled, actively monitors news.lists.filters and alt.nocem.misc for NoCem SPAM advisories. Tagged SPAM message IDs are then transparently filtered from NNTPCache traffic.

NNTPCache can also act selectively as an intelligent chrooted firewall NNTP application proxy and supports full RFC931/ident, source address and newsgroup access controls with quite a reasonable degree of granularity.

NNTPCache saves IMMENSE amounts of bandwidth (we were quite astounded to see just how much bandwidth news uses - on our network, news accounted for more IP traffic than everything else combined (though were not sure if this says more about the authors proclivities or network traffic statistics in general.

NNTPCache also saves truly huge amounts of drive space (if you are talking about a full feed - as of writing thats around 3 - 10Gb a day). With NNTPCache, startup times for news readers become limited only by the speed of the internal network (or the loopback device if the readers are run on the same machine as NNTPCache). It is possible to run several NNTPCacheds on different machines - indeed with larger sites, this practice is recommended; even intranets can become clogged with news traffic.

NNTPCache tries very hard to look like nnrpd, so there shouldnt be any reason why the remote servers that NNTPCache is directed to feed from can not be other NNTPCaches themselves.

NNTPCache performs sophisticated filtering based on weighted extended regular expression pattern matching against article headers and content on a per-user, per-group, per-host (etc) basis (so the filters only effect particular user groups, not the entire population). This can be used (for instance) as a kind of Usenet "net-nanny" or to transparently remove usenet SPAM (and probably a few not so nice uses as well, like political censorship. Sadly to say though, after introducting this feature we have had not had one iota thanks from neo-corporate east-asian totalitarian capitalist running dogs). ).

NNTPCache tries very hard to emulate remote article numbering. This means that NNTPCache can be "dropped" in into an nntp network without interrupting (at the news level) the flow/ordering of articles. In the same manner, it can be transparently "plucked" from the network in the same way should it not prove to be as sexy as a sweet, ripe, red persimmon (well, its unlikely, but you never know.

NNTPCache caches the active, active.times, newsgroups and overview.fmt files, article, head, body, stat, group, listgroup, newgroups, newgroups, xgtitle, xover and xhdr commands. NNTPCache cross-posts seeds its cache and also maintains a database of message-id -> group/article_number tuples. This is just about everything.

NNTPCache has been designed to be quite efficient, in order to serve very large reader populations. It takes full advantage of copy-on-write OS design, shared memory and mmaped files/memory/anonymous regions.

NNTPCache has a built in web-server and macro language - ostensibly for displaying NNTPCache statistical information, but the depraved or security retentive (ok, ok, AND) could use it for other diversions.

Alleged to autoconfigure, compile and run, dance and make walnut milkshakes on a wide number of unix platforms. But not NT (of course!).

WMCpu 1.3

WMCpu 1.3

WMCpu is a dockapp CPU monitor resembling Xosview. more>>
WMCpu is a dockapp CPU monitor resembling Xosview. Displays system/user/nice/idle CPU statistics, and also system uptime. Supports 2.2 or 2.4 kernels.

This is a pretty boring looking CPU monitor dockapp. Its not sexy, not fast, and not really useful either. This is something I started back in 1998 and I guess I really havent had time to play with it since then.

T. Sander sent me a couple fixes for the display problems, so I got motivated to look at this mess and see what I can do with it.

If you havent used XosView, this might be a little puzzling for you. But what you need to do is get XosView and run it for a few minutes and youll understand what this dockapp does.

Installation:

1) % tar -zxvf wmcpu-1.3.tar.gz
2) % cd wmcpu-1.3
3) % make
4) % make install
5) % wmcpu & (or wmcpu -h for help)

JDraw is a pixel oriented graphics editor designed especially for small to medium-sized pictures used to decorate web pages.
JDraw image editor is completely written in Java, simple to use and saves (animated) GIFs, ICOs and PNGs.
I started writing this tool because it took me ages to do little things like changing a couple of pixels, making a colour transparent, adjusting some RGB values. Most graphic tools irritate with hundreds of sexy filters but have steep learning curves or just dont care about simple pixels.
So its high time for a good old pixel editor.
Programming language: JDraw is entirely written in Java. Originally written for JDK 1.4 it now supports JDK 1.3 as well.
Supported Platforms: So far I developed and tested JDraw under Windows XP and SuSe Linux 8.1.
