PySamba is a Python library that provides a full wrapper for the Samba CLI library provided with samba-3.0.24.

PySamba is a full wrapper based in the work of Tim Potter. In fact, PySamba is built as a Python C extension over the cli library provided with samba-3.0.24 and a Python module that hides the complexity of the lower layer (smb) providing high-level commands like Mkdir or DiskAvail. At now, PySamba provides a fully functional samba wrapper, allowing the developer to interface any samba-capable device much like python’s ftplib does.

PySamba has been written by Juan M. Casillas and released under GNU GPL public License.

You need a gcc compiler, a python running environment (tested with 2.4.3) and the samba-3.0.24 sources. PySamba Has been developed under an UNIX environment (HP-UX) and tested against native NT shares.

from pysamba import * ... and go. Server login is encapsulated in the constructor, so just provide the require parameters, and start working with your favorite smb share. PySamba is easy to use, and easy to install.

Installation:

See the INSTALL file, but the installation process is the following:

Get Samba-3.0.24 and uncompress it.

copy py_smb.c and py_smb.h into samba-3.0.24/source/python replacing the existing files

go to samba-3.0.24/source and issue a configure --with-python=python. Then make , make install, make python_ext, make install This will install python’s dynamic library.

Import pysamba from the directory where pysamba is, or copy it to any place under the PYTHONPATH

GSAMBAD is a frontend for the Samba file and print server. GSAMBAD project features multiple local and remote user and group imports, on the fly share creation, and user handling, including randomization of usernames and passwords.

SMBGate provides a gateway and firewall with authentication managed by a Samba Primary Domain Controller. The firewall rules are set on a per-user basis.

Gsmb provides a graphical interface allowing simplified management of the file of the Samba users file /etc/smbpasswd.

In initial Windows 95 releases, passwords for accessing shared volumes were sent as cleartext over the network. Sambda authentication used the /etc/passwd file on the server. The Windows 95 updates introduced encryption of these passwords. There are two methods for making Samba support this new authentication scheme:

- modify the register base of Win95 clients to reactivate cleartext passwords
- configure Samba so that it accepts the encrypted password

The second option is what we are interested in here.

Installation:

You can download version 0.5 (released 1999-09-30) of gsmb.

To activate the recognition of encrypted passwords, the option ENCRYPT PASSWORDS = yes should be positioned in the /etc/smb.conf configuration file.

In addition to this, it is necessary to create the Samba users file. On Redhat 5.2, this is called /etc/smbpasswd.

The Gsmb program allows the management of the Samba users by modifying this file. It uses the Gtk 1.2.0. library.

Usage:

At this point, the possibility of the program are the following:

- The function Quit presented in the menu "File" allow to quit the program (Incredible, isnt it !!)

- The function presented in the menu "smbpasswd/create smbpasswd version 1.9.x from passwd" will erase the "/etc/smbpasswd" and another one. The /etc/passwd is read and a Samba count is created for each Linux users. The /etc/smbpasswd is filled with the samba 1.9.x format.

- The function presented in the menu "smbpasswd/create smbpasswd version 2.0.x from passwd" will erase the "/etc/smbpasswd" and another one. The /etc/passwd is read and a Samba count is created for each Linux users. The /etc/smbpasswd is filled with the samba 2.0.x format.

- The function presented in the menu "smbpasswd/create another users" creates a linux users by calling the program Adduser.

- The buttons between the two list permits to create samba users. Before, just select in the linux list one or several users, select the format you want, and then click on the button with the arrows. This action will create the corresponding Samba users.

- Possibility to delete Samba users. First, select the Samba users (Dont forget the shift and crtl buttons for multiple selection) and then click on the button delete.

- You have the possibility now have a null password for Samba users. If the row for a user is red, then you have validate the Null password option for this user.

- You can disable Samba users accounts. For the format 1.9.x, the password field will be replaced by "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX". For the format 2.0.X, the "D" will be added in a field. In each case, you can see the state of the account in the first column of the samba users list.

AutoRPM is a Perl program that automates RPM installation. AutoRPM project is designed to be run from cron nightly and run interactively as necessary.
By default, every night, it will check for official Red Hat updates for your system. However, you can modify the configuration file to do much more... like automatically install the same RPMs on a cluster of machines.
The interactive mode lets you actually install the updates (by default, RPMs are not upgraded automatically, although they can be).
You can also use the interactive mode to process a directory of RPMs. AutoRPM will compare each file with your installed RPMs and allow you to decide which ones to install.
Options:
--version
Displays the version of AutoRPM and exit.
--debug
Enables very verbose debugging information.
--notty
Usually used from scripts (such as cron scripts) to guarantee
that AutoRPM does not try to interact with a user. When running
interactively, AutoRPM also will print everything to the screen
(i.e. bypassing any configuration in the config file to mail
reports). So, if you are running AutoRPM interactively and want
it to behave as if it is running from a cron job, then you can
use this parameter.
--pidfile
Overrides the default PID file location (particularly useful for
running as a normal user when only updating a directory and not
a system). The default value is /var/run/autorpm.pid.
--tempdir
Overrides the default temporary (spool) directory (particularly
useful for running as a normal user when only updating a direc-
tory and not a system). The default value is
/var/spool/autorpm.
cmd1 cmd2 ...
Any number of commands can be specified on the command line. If
specified, AutoRPM will run all of the commands in the order
given, and then exit. For a list of commands, run "autorpm
help". For help on a given command, run "autorpm help com-
mand_name".

smblansearch is set of integrated tools that help you to find and download files you need on samba shares.
It consists of:
sls_main - frontend for sls_scanner
sls_scanner - console smb-scanner
qsmbdownloader - simple smb-downloader, that supports resuming and recursive downloads.
Enhancements:

- sls_main sends workgroup name to sls_scanner now. this should fix bug with smblansearch and domain

Samba Commander is a text mode SMB network commander. In SMBC, you can browse the local network or you can use the search function to find the files.
You can also download/upload files and directories or create them both locally and remotely. SMBC has a resume function and supports UTF-8 characters.
