ROX-All 1.1
ROX-All is a single archive containing launchers for most of the ROX applications. more>>
ROX-All is a single archive containing launchers for most of the ROX applications.
It contains everything you need to get started with ROX, a GTK desktop based around the file system.
Because actually putting all the software in this archive would make it very big and quickly out of date, it will download the latest versions of programs when you run them the first time.
Therefore, you will need a network connection (but only when downloading or upgrading programs).

ROX-Session 0.29
ROX-Session is a simple session manager. more>>
ROX-Session is a simple session manager. It loads, runs any programs you asked it to, and then quits when you run it a second time (thus ending your session). ROX-Session does not display any windows until you ask it to quit.
The first time you run it it will offer to make itself your session manager, so that youll get a ROX desktop when you log in (see screenshots below).
ROX-Session will automatically run any programs in your Auto Start directory when you log in. You can open this directory by bringing up the menu over ROX-Sessions icon and choosing Auto Start...
Enhancements:
- A large number of small bugs were fixed.
- New settings for the Gamma, Screensaver, and Keyboard configlets were added.
- The freedesktop.org configuration directories are now used instead of the old CHOICESPATH ones.

ROX-Filer 2.6.1
ROX-Filer is a drag-and-drop based filemanager. more>>
ROX-Filer is a fast and powerful graphical file manager for the X Window System.
You can use ROX-Filer as a small and fast filer within your current desktop......or get it to manage your pinboard, panels and applications.
Main features:
- Fast scanning of directories (in the background),
- Uncluttered display (popup menus are used throughout),
- Background file operations (copy, move, link, delete, permissions, find),
- Powerful expression-based find feature with on-line quick reference (eg mtime after 2 days ago and size > 10Mb finds files based on their modification time and size)
- Mounts and unmounts filesystems (just Shift-Click on the mount point),
- Supports the XDND protocol, which provides for drag-and-drop file loading, and the new XDS extension which allows drag-and-drop saving,
- VfS support allows browsing around inside zip files (and other types of archive),
- Fully configurable from the Options dialog box,
- User-defined key bindings for all menu entries,
- A pop-up minibuffer allows navigating the filesystem using shell-style tab completion,
- The minibuffer can also be used for quickly entering shell commands,
- Full manual provided (HTML format),
Other features:
XDND
A common drag-and-drop protocol used, for example, by the GNOME desktop[GNOME]. This allows data to be loaded into an application by dragging it from a filer window to a program. The full specification is given in [DND].
XDS
An extension to XDND that allows applications to save data by dragging an icon back to a filer window. The full specification is given in [XDS].
Choices
A simple, but flexible, system for managing user choices. See [Choices] for details.
Application directories
Self contained relocatable applications, where installation is as simple as copying it to where you want it and uninstalling it is just a matter of deleting a directory. Described later in this documentation.
Thumbnails
The filer can be made to display image files by using the image itself for the icon, instead of a generic `this-is-an-image icon. Very useful for organising a directory full of photos! See [Thumbs] for details (spec is still in developement).
Shared MIME Info Database
In the past, each desktop had its own database of rules for determining the type of files. The Shared MIME Info Database[SharedMIME] unifies these into a single system shared by all desktops.
Icon Themes
Collections of file icons, called themes, can be installed (eg, to `~/.icons). You can switch between themes in the Options box. Once other desktops support this fully, themes will be sharable between desktops.
DNotify support (Linux only)
If used with a recent Linux kernel (2.4.x series), the filer will notice changes to directories automatically. On other systems, directories will update when the pointer is moved over them.
Enhancements:
- Some problems with session management were fixed.
- This makes it easier to use ROX-Filer with gnome-session and similar software.
- When creating thumbnails, this release can use a thumbnail embedded in an EXIF image, which speeds things up.
- A couple of build problems were fixed.

Absolute Linux 12.2.5 / 13.0 RC2
Absolute Linux is a lightweight modification of Slackware. more>>
Absolute Linux 12.2.5 / 13.0 RC2 is an excellent software which functions as a lightweight modification of Slackware. Makes configuration and maintenance much easier, has common applications installed and configured. Plays audio CDs, DVDs and movies "out of the box", easy to configure and simple to use.
Major Features:
- Uses icewm/rox-filer for window/file managers.
- Has backup of fluxbox/fox pathfinder.
- Installer is same setup as Slackware, with a couple changes.
- Automatically installs all packages that weight in at 1.7Gb when complete.
- Is a modification of Slackware
- Fast, stay-out-of-your-way desktop. No Gnome or KDE. Uses well integrated collection of the best lightweight software to give you most of the things the "big desktops" give you, only at at much, much faster pace.
- The software folks use on a desktop: Firefox, OpenOffice, Pidgin chat, GIMP image editor, WPClipart, Thunderbird mail, K3B CD/DVD burning, Frostwire P2P, Deluge BitTorrent, 2 dictionaries, a bunch of games -- basically any of the latest, most popular Open Source software.
- Many script utilities (with friendly little GUIs) to make configuration and maintenance of system easier and still allows manual (text-file based) configuration, if desired.
- Package compatible with Slackware minor versions. (ex. Absolute 12.2 -> Slackware-12.2), with a few exceptions: kernel packages, KDE-libs, madwifi, ndiswrapper, svga-helper, a/etc.
- Root user can install software or set system configurations. That's it. Perfect for parents and IT guys. If you want to do something root user is allowed to do, log in as root. That's what the account is for.
Enhancements:
- Interface updated along with kernel, python, packaging system which is now txz-based and due to higher compression the main release contains much more than previously: OpenOffice and Java, as well as many other applications now fit on a single CD.
- Pcmanfm and rox have both been modified to seamlessly work with the TXZ package archives as well as the new "Add/Remove Programs" item in root menu.
- New volume control (now in system tray, sleeker.)
- New theme, more complete file type handling.
- Midori installed from main ISO, option to change to default in control panel.
- New KDE libs (in support of new K3B), a large number of interface tweaks, mostly to do with filetype handling.
- Seems pretty stable, looking for bug reports.

APODIO 4.3.9
APODIO is a Mandriva-based specialist live CD designed for musicians and multimedia enthusiasts. more>>
APODIO project is a Mandriva-based specialist live CD designed for musicians and multimedia enthusiasts.
The new version 4.2.2 is considered a test release; it contains a large collection of software for audio, video and graphics manipulation.
The APODIO live CD boots into French by default, but English and a number of other languages are also supported.
The default window manager is the light-weight PWM, with OroboROX provided as an alternative.
The APODIO project was started in 2003 by the APO33 association It has two objectives : First : to create a live CD for PC, a complete audio station under GNU/Linux that could quickly be installed on the hard disk, or work straight away as a CD, with a Ram of at least 320 Mo, and practical and simple administration tools.
The 3.0.9 April 2003 APODIO version of the live CD immediately recognizes and adjusts itself to your equipment, your sound and graphic display adapters and your eventual hard disk partitions. It offers various interfaces, such as Gnome, Rox, Fluxbox... and a choice of software to work on sound. It is based on the GNU/Linux Mandrake 10.0 distribution and on the mklicecd group scripts for the creation of the live CD or of the hard disk.
The second objective is to give some sort of permanence to part of our work, while adhering to the principles of GNU/GPL. Unlike most other distributions that tend to drift too far away from the Linux Debian/RedHat/Mandrake communities, we wished to remain close to Mandriva, to allow users to reclaim the tools for themselves.
From the start, APODIO was not meant to become a finished or final product, but rather, a toolbox, more adapted to the common user than to the developer ; more practical than technical. Since we follow closely the Mandriva platform, we can concentrate more on what we find interesting in the first place, while making sure that our work will keep up with changes in hardware and software.
The complete remade July 2005 APODIO-4 version utilizes less RAM than the V3 ; it is based on - and can be synchronised with – Mandriva 2006 (cooker). Some video processing software has been added and the PureData base has been considerably increased.
We now have a practical base in the evolution of the live CD APODIO on Mandriva and new projects are in progress : the Poulpe (Octopus), a live CD that can be the basis for a sound and plastic installation, in various places linked by web-radio flows. Ref. the site : (http://www.apo33.org/poulpe) The Ubik, the live CD for a standby or a disabled situation, becomes a sound and video sculpture, connected to any other Ubik. It can be responsive to a network or to a keyboard/mouse set. Each user can either modify the CD base or the PureData patches found in a known directory in a disc, usb, fp... and thus personify his/her Ubik.

Grafpup 2.00
Grafpup Linux is a desktop Linux operating system based closely on Puppy Linux. more>>
Grafpup Linux is a desktop Linux operating system based closely on Puppy Linux. Grafpups goal is to be as useful to graphic designers and other imaging professionals as possible while still remaining extremely small and fast. How small?
Grafpup is a live cd of only 72mb with current versions of Gimp, Cinepaint, Inkscape, and Scribus. You will be amazed at how much is in there for the size. You will also be amazed at how fast everything runs.
Running from the live cd, the entire operating system loads into ram, including all of the applications. This means that your programs start without any hesitation and respond instantly to your input. Unlike some live cds, however, you dont have to reconfigure every time you reboot.
Grafpup saves all of your settings into a file called pup101 on your hard drive. This file contains your entire home directory, plus any additional programs that you wish to install. Grafpup is also very user friendly, with wizards for doing most system tasks like connecting to the internet and installing to hard disk or usb drive.
There is also a powerful package management system, pupget, with a very extensive and ever increasing list of additional packages available for easy installation. An additional package installer, dotpup, offers single click installation of a long list of software. In other words this is much more than a garden variety live cd. It is capable of being your main operating system and extensible enough to satisfy just about anyone.
How is all of this accomplished? I wish I could take all of the credit but I really have to take my hat off to the developer of Puppy Linux, Barry Kauler. Puppy (and Grafpup) uses the squash filesystem method of compression to reduce the size of the cd image by about two thirds. Then, through the magic of unionfs the whole filesystem becomes writeable again.
For a full explanation please go to the Puppylinux website, www.puppylinux.org. Another aspect of the incredible size to utility ratio is the careful selection of applications that goes into Puppy and has made its way into Grafpup. Applications are chosen for speed and simplicity, avoiding bulky and wasteful code. Grafpup uses icewm as its default (and only) window manager.
KDE or Gnome arent even considered. Opera is used as the default browser and email client, instead of the common combination of Firefox and Thunderbird which would be half again as large. Though small, you will find that ROX-filer is one of the best filemanagers that you will ever use. It just plain works. I have further cut down in certain other areas in order to leave room for some serious heavy duty graphics applications.
Even though things are cut down, you will find that Grafpup is a fairly complete operating system and most tasks can be completed without the need for additional software. You will be able to browse the web, send and recieve email, write and print documents, organize your digital photos, and watch dvd movies and video off the internet.
You will also be able to burn cds and dvds, create impressive graphics and animations, put together professional looking web pages, and create press-ready brochures or other materials for print. And Im talking about the live cd without any additional software.
Visit the Grafpup and Puppy package repositories and you can unlock as much potential as any of the most popular Linux distros out there. There you will find such powerful software as OpenOffice and the Seamonkey internet suite. You can create 3d graphics using Blender, or even install and run a large selection of Windows software using Wine.
Try it and see for yourself. Since it is a live cd there is very little, if any, risk involved. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised at what can be done using such a tiny system.
Enhancements:
- Grafpup 2.00 (final) is officially on the mirrors. This release comes with some really bleeding edge features when compared with previous versions, such as a 2.6.20.2 kernel, revamped package management with dependency resolution, GIMP 2.3.14, Cinepaint 0.22 with the Ufraw plug-in, a brand new control panel, cdrkit replacing cdrtools, Openbox replacing IceWM, and a host of other changes. In addition to the light-weight Openbox desktop, you can also easily download and install both Xfce and KDE. The software repository has blown up to include over 1,100 titles (and counting).
<<lessGrafpup is a live cd of only 72mb with current versions of Gimp, Cinepaint, Inkscape, and Scribus.
Martini 0.1.0
Martini is a powerful file manager. more>>
Martini is a powerful file manager. Martini was written with performance and user-friendliness in mind.
Martini is a file manager for linux, it is written in c and only need Imlib2, glib and fam to work. Martini was written with speed and user-friendly in mind.
The core make use of plugin to display different view (icons, list, image, ecc..). In this way its very simple to add new views and to use the program in different environment. In fact dont depend by any specific desktop such as gnome or kde.
Martini try to be more freedesktop standard as possible and follow this specification: mime-spec, icon-theme, thumbnail-spec.
For now I have quite finish the GtkIcon and GtkList plugin. There are also, but in really early stage, an Icon plugin that use the new EFL for the best eye-candy experience and a text plugin for all the console lovers.
Martini is really small and fast and dont make use of any special Desktop Environment facilities. It can be used in any environment such gnome, kde, enlightenment, and so on.
The program as an integrated image thumbnailer, and can make use of external thumbnailer helper.
