Eject removable media is a servicemenu to add "Eject removeable device" to all media.

Sometimes USB keys etc dont have any GUI option to unmount them (in KDE 3.5.2), and just pulling them out is so wrong!

the poldek 0.20

the poldek 0.20

the poldek is a full-featured console frontend to RPM. more>>
The poldek project is the RPM packages management helper tool; its basic features are similar to every modern package updater like apt-get -- the program takes information about packages from package index file (packages.dir.gz by default) and allows packaging installation, upgrading and removal.
Package dependencies are automatically handled, so if you need to install a package which requires other packages to be installed, poldek downloads and installs all the required packages by itself.
Main poldeks advantages are:
- Relatively fast dependency processing
Package dependencies, conflicts and setting in order are handled by poldek itself without using rpmlib, so the program is significantly faster and uses less memory than rpmlib-based tools.
- "Smart" installation of a big package sets
Before their installation packages are divided into small groups, usually from 2 to 10 items (depending on their reciprocal dependencies). Each group is installed separately, which ensures that unsucessful installation of one of the groups doesnt influence other groups.
Another benefit of this separate installation is that it requires less memory and disk space than the usual one.
- Interactive mode
The poldek can work in two modes: a batch mode (in use similar to apt-get one) and interactive one. The interactive mode puts the user into a readline interface with command line auto-completion and history. In this mode the user is able to browse, search, download, install/upgrade and deinstall packages. In its concept it is similar to shell mode of Perls CPAN module (see sample interactive mode session).
- Installation system from scratch needs 8-12 MB memory only
During this type of install packages are downloaded and installed separately, so used memory size is independent of number of packages intended to install. Program is used by PLD Installer
- Quick package set verification for unresolved dependencies unneeded conflicts and dependency loops.
Feature is useful for distribution maintainers; see sample report.
- Division package set for the purpose of placing it on removable media (like CDROM or ZIP).
Program divide packages in the way that minimize needs of disk changes; for example if distribution fits on 3 CDs, then only 2 changes of CD disk are necessary during installation system from scratch. This feature is used for making PLD CD ISO images, see geniso-poldek script for details.
- Support for "patches" of package index
To save users time and bandwidth program supports "incremental indexes" which is very useful with repositories which frequently change. This feature consist in creation "patches" of index which gives the users possibility to update local index by download "patch" with information of changes only.
- Program is prepared to be run by ordinary user, installation of packages in that case can be done with sudo.
Enhancements:
- This is the first release after the poldek redesign.
- New features and significant changes include a new native package repository index format, support for Yum and XML Metadata repositories, improved support for APT-RPM indexes, a more user friendly interactive mode, proper packages ordering before their uninstallation, a clearer configuration syntax, a better dependency resolver, and many more.

Wireless Tools 27

Wireless Tools 27

The Wireless Tools is a set of tools allowing to manipulate the Linux Wireless Extensions. more>>
The Linux Wireless Extension and the Wireless Tools are an Open Source project sponsored by Hewlett Packard (through my contribution) since 1996, and build with the contribution of many Linux users all over the world.

The Wireless Extension (WE) is a generic API allowing a driver to expose to the user space configuration and statistics specific to common Wireless LANs. The beauty of it is that a single set of tool can support all the variations of Wireless LANs, regardless of their type (as long as the driver support Wireless Extension).

Another advantage is these parameters may be changed on the fly without restarting the driver (or Linux).

The Wireless Tools (WT) is a set of tools allowing to manipulate the Wireless Extensions. They use a textual interface and are rather crude, but aim to support the full Wireless Extension. There are many other tools you can use with Wireless Extensions, however Wireless Tools is the reference implementation.

iwconfig manipulate the basic wireless parameters
iwlist allow to initiate scanning and list frequencies, bit-rates, encryption keys...
iwspy allow to get per node link quality
iwpriv allow to manipulate the Wireless Extensions specific to a driver (private)
ifrename allow to name interfaces based on various static criteria

Most Linux distributions also have integrated Wireless Extensions support in their networking initialisation scripts, for easier boot-time configuration of wireless interfaces. They also include Wireless Tools as part of their standard packages.
Wireless configuration can also be done using the Hotplug scripts and distribution specific support, this enable the proper support of any removable wireless interface (Pcmcia, CardBus, USB...).

Any versions of the Pcmcia package offer the possibility to do wireless configuration of Pcmcia and Cardbus card through thefile wireless.opts. This allow to fully integrate wireless settings in the Pcmcia scheme mechansism. However, this method is now deprecated in favor of distribution specific methods.

Please note that the Wireless Tools (starting with version 19) supports fully IEEE 802.11 parameters and devices, support older style of devices and most proprietary protocols, and are prepared to handle HiperLan as well. More recent versions of course adds more 802.11 support.

But, unfortunately not all drivers support all these features...

CryptoMaster is a little Frontend to cryptsetup where you can initialize and mount your dm-crypt (LUKS) encrypted devices.

The status for each device is shown and you are able to add and remove new existing disks. The idea is to be completely independent from the usual crypttab/fstab setup and is mostly for use with removable devices.

Devices can be unlocked with a keyfile or with a given password. There is a panik button which will shred the keyfiles and the config files, so without the proper password thirds will be unable to decrypt your volumes.

Currently there is no GUI to setup new devices, you can only use your existing LUKS drives/images.

Xfce4-mount-plugin 0.5.0

Xfce4-mount-plugin 0.5.0

Xfce 4-mount-plugin is a mount/umount utility for the panel. more>>
Xfce 4-mount-plugin provides a plugin for the Xfce 4 panel allowing you to mount devices and have them opened in a file manager afterwards.

This little plugin behaves like the "kwikdisk - removable media utility" shipped with KDE.

Press it and it will display a list of items representing your various devices. If you click on an unmounted devices it will mount it and vice versa. There is no warning in case a device cant be mounted or unmounted.

The plugin displays various information on each device :
"device name" > "mount point" ["used size"/"total size"] "available size" free and an obvious progress bar

The plugin works in a very simple way. It builds a list of devices from your /etc/fstab (using setfsent() and getfsent() ) and get device stat from the list of mounted devices (ie same data as the df command), using setmntent() and getmntent().

For mouting a device, the plugin simply runs a "mount /mount_point/ " command.

Xfce 4 mount plugin is a plugin for the Xfce 4 panel allowing you to mount devices and have them opened in a file manager afterwards.

Usage:

Add it to the panel, close the appearing options dialog and simply click the new hard disk icon in your panel. You will see a menu containing all items from fstab, i.e. any partitions and removable media, that is currently inserted.

Now, you want to mount the inserted CD-Rom? Just click onto the appropriate line in the menu. Can’t mount it? But have the possibility to `sudo’? Then go to the options dialog and specify your own mount command, which might be `sudo mount’.

Next, you didn’t get any feedback if the CD was mounted successfully? Why don’t specify a file launcher in the options dialog to display the mounted volumes after mounting them?

Ok, now you’re done working with the CD and want to unmount it. You click the hard disk, click the appropriate line, but don’t know, whether it was unmounted successfully. You can check so by clicking the hard disk icon again and see, whether it is still mounted, or specify to display a short messages after successfully unmounting the mounted volume.

So, basically, everything works now, but you have network file systems which might be nice to be displayed... Well, there’s another option to include network file systems.
As a last item, you can also specify another mount icon you like more, e.g. a block device symbol, or a CD, or a rack, ...

syrep 0.9

syrep 0.9

Syrep is a generic file repository synchronization tool. more>>
syrep is a generic file repository synchronization tool. syrep software may be used to synchronize large file hierarchies bidirectionally by exchanging patch files. Syrep is truely peer-to-peer, no central servers are involved. Synchronizations between more than two repositories are supported. The patch files may be transferred via offline media, e.g. removable hard disks or compact discs.

Files are tracked by their message digests, currently MD5. The following file operations are tracked in the snapshot files: creation, deletion, modification, creation of new hard or symbolic links, renaming.

(The latter is nothing more than a new hard link and removal of the old file). syrep doesnt distuinguish between soft and hard links. In fact even copies of files are treated as the same. Currently, syrep doesnt synchronize file attributes like access modes or modification times.

syrep was written to facilitate the synchronization of two large digital music repositories without direct network connection. Patch files of several gigabytes are common in this situation.

syrep is able to cope with 64 bit file sizes. (LFS)

syrep is optimized for speed. It may make use of a message digest cache to accelerate the calculation of digests of a whole directory hierarchy.

Katalog 0.4

Katalog 0.4

Katalog is a CD organizer integrated in konqueror. more>>
Katalog is a CD organizer for the KDE.

If you have many CD and tons of downloaded files, but you arent able to remember where you put a file when you need it, then Katalog may help you. With this application you can scan a CD and store all the data about each file in a tree structured catalog.

You can add as many catalogs as you like. Searching through the catalogs its easy and fast. The folder to search can be on your drive or on a removable media, such a CD, ZIP or floppy. Katalog saves data in a XML file, compressed on the fly using gzip.

I start to write this application trying to port the excellent KDE 1.x application kdiskcat to KDE 3.x, but the part of the KDE API involved is changed radically so I start to write Katalog from scratch.

In the first revision of the application I tried to mimic the graphic interface and the features of kdiskcat. Soon I found two better alternatives of Katalog: gtktalog and CdCat, So I changed my plans and I write a brand-new Katalog fully integrated in KDE.
