BeleniX ISO Remastering Toolkit Alpha1

BeleniX ISO Remastering Toolkit Alpha1

BeleniX ISO Remastering Toolkit consists of a set of shell scripts, utilities and config files to customize a Belenix ISO image. more>>
BeleniX ISO Remastering Toolkit software consists of a set of shell scripts, utilities and config files that allows one to customize the BeleniX ISO image and generate modified LiveCDs also called remastering.
Remastering BeleniX requires a bit of work. Though the scripts automate most of the process, this is the initial version of this software so some enhancements are still in the TODO stage.
Enhancements:
- This is the first release of the ISO Remastering Tookit for BeleniX.
- It allows one to create customized LiveCDs based on BeleniX.
- The HOWTO describes the process in detail.

Crystality Plugin 0.92

Crystality Plugin 0.92

Crystality Plugin consists of XMMS plugin and stdin/stdout plugin. more>>
Crystality Plugin consists of XMMS plugin and stdin/stdout plugin. It was written for realtime remastering of sound from mp3 files.
You will need a reasonably good stereo and a good ear to notice quality
improvement, otherwise this is not for you.

This plugin tries to patch mp3 format flaws, not a poor audio hardware! Yes, you should be able to hear well enough (sorry) - for some of my friends plugin is a cool thing, while the others does not hear nothing but echo and stereo expander (well, you will hear every effect if you set it to the maximum, but it will not sound nice).

Crystality was written for 16bit 44.1kHz stereo sound and may give strange results
with other sound formats.

Damian Hodgkiss sent me a quick port for Winamp 2.x. I have not tried it yet, but you can get it (cr-quick-winamp-port.zip).

This plugin does mainly four things (and some minor tricks):

1. Adds some sounds in very high frequency range. Most of the mp3s in The Net are flawed with a 16(15?) kHz cutoff. Even these ones compressed at high bitrates. This spectrum hole is audible and very unpleasant. This plugin helps a bit. Old mp3s made from the vinyl or the magnetic tape may also sound better with these "steroids". For old mp3s youll probably need to set filter to 0.1.

2. Adds some even harmonic distortions (actually nonlinearity), that sounds nice. Valve amps introduce even harmonic distortions (although differnt way) Look at audiophile pages for more info (well, mp3 format is not an audiophile stuff at all, but... welcome to the real world...).

3. Adds simple, but nice 3D echo (concert hall or church like). Most of echo plugins sounds too hard and aggresively for me. This one does not.

4. Extends stereo.

USING:

There are currently two versions of plugin - XMMS plugin and stdin/stdout. Stdin/out plugin is completly independent of XMMS plugin. It even stores its configuration in a separate file (~/.crystalityrc). Stdin/out plugin is alpha code, so some features are missed. You cannot reopen configuration dialog after closing without restarting plugin, there are no "save config", "load config" buttons. Configuration is loaded automatically on startup and saved on exit, either on normal finish or ^C. You can disable GUI with -g option (useful in scripts).

Because this plugin adds some sounds at high frequencies, you will probably need to decrease treble level on your amplifier. Plugin does not perform normalization, so you should slightly decrease signal level in XMMS equalizer (NOT volume slider on the main panel). Setting sliders to the maximum is generally a bad idea (well, except the filter, where that setting is useful).

PERFORMANCE:

It eats about 15% of CPU on my AMD K6-2/400 and optimization is still possible, this is not highly optimized code.

INSTALLATION:

Distribution contains binary version of XMMS plugin library and stdin/stdout plugin executable (Linux i586, glibc 2.1.3). You may copy plugin library file (libcrystality.so) into XMMSs Effect directory and executable (crystality-stdio) to /usr/local/bin or any location you prefer. For default locations simply type:

make install

and thats it.
You may also build crystality from the source.

make buildinstall

typed as root in the source directory should be all you have to do.

This plugin was my first small step in gtk programming, so dont expect any wonders, GUI is actually a quick hack to hardcoded settings. I am not a GUI programmer.

WANem 1.1

WANem 1.1

WANem is a WAN Emulator, meant to provide real experience of Internet, during development and test on a LAN environment. more>>
WANem is a WAN Emulator, meant to provide real experience of Internet, during development and test on a LAN environment. Typically application developers develop applications on a LAN while the intended purpose for the same could be the client is accessing the application by WAN or even the internet.

WANem allows for the application development team to setup a transparent application gateway which can be made use to simulate WAN characteristics like Network delay, Packet loss, Packet corruption, Disconnections, Packet re-ordering, Jitter, etc.

WANem allows for WAN network characteristic emulation and thus allowing for applications to be tested in a realistic WAN environment before they are moved into production.

WANem is a combined development strategy where it hooks into the Linux kernel for performing network emulations and provides GUI to make it simple to use. Remastering of Knoppix Live CD makes it even more effective as it becomes platform independant.

distccKNOPPIX 0.1.3

distccKNOPPIX 0.1.3

distccKNOPPIX is a directly bootable and self-configuring Linux system on a small (55MB) iso running a distccd daemon. more>>
distccKNOPPIX is a directly bootable and self-configuring Linux system on a small (55MB) iso running a distccd daemon. distccKNOPPIX is a simple remastering of Knoppix running a distccd daemon and some general cleaning up/removal of unneeded packages/apps.
Its obvious target is for those who have other machines at their hands, and for some reason or an other can not get a distccd daemon running on it.
Attention Gentoo Users: The distccKNOPPIX (Debian) version of gcc is not patched with pie or protector support like the Gentoo version is. Im working on fixing this, but you will probably have problems compiling glibc, grub and perhaps other programs until this issue is remedied.
All versions are identical except for the default gcc. All downloads have all 4 versions of gcc. You can also change the default gcc at the boot prompt by typing knoppix gcc-3.4 for example. Or you can change the gcc version at the command line with update-alternatives --config gcc. If you are unsure which version to download, try the gcc-3.3 one.
Main features:
- Kernel 2.4.26
- distcc 2.16 (port 3632)
- gcc 2.95.4, 3.2.3, 3.3.4, 3.4.1
- cpp 2.95.4, 3.2.3, 3.3.4, 3.4.1
- g++ 2.95.4, 3.2.3, 3.3.4, 3.4.1
Enhancements:
- added c++ link to g++
- more cleanups
- created a mailing list

DistccPPCKnoppix 0.0.9

DistccPPCKnoppix 0.0.9

DistccPPCKnoppix is a Knoppix distribution that contains distcc servers for both Linux x86 and OSX ppc compiling. more>>
DistccPPCKnoppix is a Knoppix distribution which contains distcc servers for both Linux x86 and OSX ppc compiling. With it you can utilize your extra x86 computers to build Linux x86 and OSX PPC binaries.

After running across "Building a Darwin cross compiler for use with distcc and fink" and "HOWTO: Use Gentoo Distcc Host to cross-compile for OSX" I quickly set out and build my own cross compiler to speed up my Apple OSX development. Like most people I have more x86 hardware then I do ppc. It didnt take long to get it build and a test distccd server up to show that it was working.

When I compile for Linux x86 I use distccKnoppix to utilize all my spare x86 computers I have lying around. Using the Knoppix Remastering Howto I quickly added the ppc cross compiler to distccKnoppix. Now when it boots two distccd demons start on separate ports. The default port (3632) has the x86 compiler and the ppc compiler is on port 3633.

Now Apple developers finally have a use for their x86 hardware (that they can admit to). This is also a nice cheap way to speed up OSX compiling and development.
