Red Hat Linux 9
Red Hat Linux is probably the best-known Linux distribution. more>>
Red Hat Linux is probably the best-known Linux distribution. Red Hat Linux is well-supported by commercial software, and tends to be easy to install and have good hardware support out of the box.
Compaq has taken over the maintenance for Red Hat for their Alpha processor - theres a link to their Alpha Red Hat page below.
Red Hat 9 is the last version of Red Hat Linux per se, and Red Hat will stop supporting it soon. Instead they offer a commercial Linux distribution, "Red Hat Enterprise Edition", and a free distribution, "The Fedora Project".

Fedora Rescue CD for i386
Fedora Rescue CD is a rescue CD for Fedora Core based systems. more>>
Fedora Rescue CD is a rescue CD for Fedora Core based systems.
The Fedora Project is a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source project. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red Hat products. It is not a supported product of Red Hat, Inc.
The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year with a public release schedule.
The Red Hat engineering team will continue to participate in the building of Fedora Core and will invite and encourage more outside participation than was possible in Red Hat Linux.
By using this more open process, we hope to provide an operating system that uses free software development practices and is more appealing to the open source community.

- Document Management for PDF, Word and other Docs.
- As a Webservice to provide search information
- As a command line tool , to give searching power to your scripts.
- Provide a Search facility for your project documentation.
Using
To use Red-Piranha - open your favourite web browser and point it at http://localhost:8080/RP . Within a few seconds , you should see the Red-Piranha start screen. This will have three items of interest
- A Text box , where we enter the information to add or search
- An add information button - to tell Red-Piranha about new information
- A Search button - to carry out a search.
Before we can search , we must tell Red-Piranha we information we are interested in. This is as easy as putting the piece of information we want to add (e.g. the folder c:temp) in the search box and pressing the Add information button. A message will be displayed saying that your information is being added and will be available to search shortly. For more information , look in the logs at TOMCAT_HOMEWebappsRPlogsrp.log
Examples of things we can add to Red-Piranha are
- A folder (e.g. C:Temp). All files in both this folder and *all* its subfolders will be added.
- An individual file. This file can be text , a web page , a word document , or pdf document. For binary files (like word , which are not plain text) , Red-Piranha will scan the file for recognizable text and add that.
- A Web page. Red-Piranha will add this web page , *and* web pages it links to.
- A Google Search (e.g. http://www.google.com/search?q=some+thing?m=100). Red-Piranha will get the results of the google search , and add information on the pages it links to.
- An XML file (including RSS feeds) , either on disk or over the web.
- Favourites / Bookmarks folders - Red-Piranha will index the web pages that these favourites point to.
Adding information can take anything from a few milliseconds , depending on the amount of information being added. Once added, Red-Piranha will check on a regular basis to see if the information added has changed and re-index if required. Your information is now available to be searched.
To do a search , put the item you want to search for into the textbox and press search. Red-Piranha will show the search results on the screen. Clicking on the link beside the search results will show you the original information (as long as you have access to it).
From version 0.3 onwards , Red-Piranha can learn what search results you are interested in an improve your future searches. To give Red-Piranha feedback and help it learn what you are interested in , click on any of the links on the search results page. Red-Piranha makes a note of your choice , which is used to adjust the search results later.

Snoopy vs. the Red Baron 1.0

Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is an open-source one/two player combat game, available for Mac OS X, Linux, BeOS, QNX and Windows.
The original Snoopy was a tiny game for the Apple Macintosh, with black and white graphics, but already almost all the levels of the new Snoopy/SDL were implemented.
Snoopy could be played by two opponents, sharing a single screen and keyboard, and although it had poor graphics and tough controls, we very much liked to play it.
While we learned programming, we constantly sought for simple, yet interesting projects. If you have ever tried to learn a new language or API, you will have recognized that the simplest way in mastering the stuff is simply reprogramming an existing application, without losing much thought on design and originality.
So my friend reprogrammed Snoopy, in Object Pascal, using SAT, the Sprite Animation Toolkit, on his Classic II. That version of Snoopy features a fully functional AI, network play, but only the first level ( weapons drop).
While he was at it, he also implemented a "missing feature", the bombs, for which there where graphics and sounds in the game, but which could not be thrown.
When I discovered SDL, I recognized that it would be ideal for the job. Running on Windows, Linux, MacOS, BeOS and many other platforms, it is my new toolkit of choice for multimedia programming. It took us several weeks to port Snoopy (besides going to school, but now the work is almost done, with only the finishing touches to be made.
I can only encourage everyone to try SDL; it is really easy and portable (if worked right).

FotoFix is a simple image viewer with simple capabilities to take care of freshly downloaded photos from your camera - can walk image lists, rotate images, and remove red eyes (if lucky). The project was inspired by IrfanView for Windows, a great but unfortunately non-portable and closed-source product.
My experience with various image viewers came to a point where I was no longer satisfied with any, so I wrote yet another one.

Quadromania 0.2
Quadromania project is a board game written in C with SDL. more>>
Quadromania project is a board game written in C with SDL.
Your task is to restore the originating board filled with red stones. The computer will pick a named amount of 3x3 tile sets and will flip the colours of the selected tiles.
This means a red tile will become green, a green one the next colour in the amount of colours, red again in the simplest case. You select the amount of colours to use and the amount of initial rotations.
In the running game click on the center point of a 3x3 tile set to exchange that selected set following the rules above. Restore the board full of red stones before you reach the limit of maximum turns.
Quadromania is a work in progress. I currently lack the time to do a decent development on it. However the current alpha release is somewhat playable and working.

libredblack 1.3
libredblack is a library to provide the RedBlack balanced tree searching and sorting algorithm. more>>
libredblack is a library to provide the RedBlack balanced tree searching and sorting algorithm.
The algorithm was taken from the book "Introduction to Algorithms" by Cormen, Leiserson & Rivest. Frankly I never entirely understood it, but it most definately works!
What is the problem with normal binary trees?: A standard binary tree only works well if the original data is provided in a random order (random in terms of the key being sorted on). If however the data is provided in order, then the tree becomes very un-balanced and searches degrade into nothing more than a linked list.
How is the RedBlack tree different?: The RedBlack tree acts in a way to keep the overall tree fairly balanced as new data is loaded in.
How does it work?: The tree is always organised such that it has the following properties:
Every node is either Red or Black.
A leaf node (a dummy empty node at the end of the tree) is always Black.
If a node is Red then its children are Black.
Every path from the root to a leaf contains the same number of Black nodes.
So from 3 & 4 above, we can see that the longest path (alternating Red and Black nodes) is only twice as long as the shortest path (all Black nodes). Thus the tree remains fairly balanced.
Great! How does it maintain those properties?: Ah, well, thats where I get a bit hazy. I know that it does this by adding Red nodes and then rotating the tree elements and changing the colours to sort out times when two Red nodes become parent-child (breaking rule 3).

INN 2.4.3
The InterNetNews package (INN) is a complete Usenet system. more>>
The InterNetNews package (INN) is a complete Usenet system. It includes innd, an NNTP server, and nnrpd, a newsreading server. INN separates hosts that feed you news from those that have users reading news. INN was originally written by Rich Salz (grab the USENIX paper Rich wrote about it here). ISC took over development of INN in 1996 after Rich was unable to continue supporting it and many variants of the software were forming.
If you are interested in receiving notice of future releases of INN, send a subscribe message to inn-announce-request@isc.org to get on the announcements mailing list. At this time, ISC regrets that we do not have the resources to offer support or training on the INN software. As partnerships in this area develop, we will post updated information here.
A news server performs three basic functions: it accepts articles from other servers and stores them on disk, sends articles it has received out to other servers, and offers stored news articles to readers on demand. It additionally has to perform some periodic maintenance tasks, such as deleting older articles to make room for new ones.
Normally a news server just stores all of the news articles it had received in a file system. Users could then read news by reading the article files on disk (or more commonly using news reading software that did this efficiently). These days, news servers are almost always stand-alone systems and news reading is supported via network connections. A user who wants to read a newsgroup opens that newsgroup in their newsreader software, which opens a network connection to the news server d sends requests for articles and related information. The protocol that a newsreader uses to talk to a news server and that a news server uses to talk to another news server over TCP/IP is called NNTP (Network News Transport Protocol).
INN supports accepting articles via either NNTP connections or via UUCP. innd, the heart of INN, handles NNTP feeding connections directly; UUCP newsfeeds use rnews (included in INN) to hand articles off to innd. Other parts of INN handle feeding articles out to other news servers, most commonly innfeed (for real-time outgoing feeds) or nntpsend and innxmit (used to send batches of news created by innd to a remote site via TCP/IP). INN can also handle outgoing UUCP feeds.
The part of INN that handles connections from newsreaders is nnrpd.
Also included in INN are a wide variety of supporting programs to handle periodic maintenance and recovery from crashes, process special control messages, maintain the list of active newsgroups, and generate and record a staggering variety of statistics and summary information on the usage and performance of the server.
INN also supports an extremely powerful filtering system that allows the server administrator to reject unwanted articles (such as spam and other abuses of Usenet).
INN is free software, supported by Internet Systems Consortium and volunteers around the world. See "Supporting the INN Effort" below.
Enhancements:
- nnrpd/group.c: Return the correct 0 0 0 response to LISTGROUP when the group is empty rather than returning no such group.
- authprogs/libauth.c: Set the length of the IPv4 sockets on platforms with a sin_len element in struct sockaddr. Reported by Gea-Suan Lin
- scripts/innreport_inn.pm: Ignore or parse some log messages from newer versions, just for better news.notice parsing when bouncing between versions.
