Red Hat Linux is probably the best-known Linux distribution. Red Hat Linux is well-supported by commercial software, and tends to be easy to install and have good hardware support out of the box.

Red Hat 9 is the last version of Red Hat Linux per se, and Red Hat will stop supporting it soon. Instead they offer a commercial Linux distribution, "Red Hat Enterprise Edition", and a free distribution, "The Fedora Project".

Fedora Linux brings you a powerful Linux operating system which is built from open source software. The Fedora Project is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat, open for general participation, led by a meritocracy, following a set of project objectives.

The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from open source software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year, with a public release schedule.

The Red Hat engineering team will continue to participate in building Fedora Core and will invite and encourage more outside participation than in past releases. Tao Linux (pronounced dow Linux) is a project to build a free Linux distribution from the sources used in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux product line.
The target market is either experienced system administrators who would like freely available binaries of this code, or end users who are interested in experimenting with enterprise functionality.
Besides being mostly compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, it also includes software packages such as Eclipse and clustering tools not found in the base RHEL products.

Scientific Linux is a Linux release put together by various labs and universities around the world. Scientific Linuxs primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimentors.
The base Scientific Linux distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.

Quick setup client guide
1. Acquire and install a recent distribution of Linux.

Quick Client Setup Guide
1. Acquire and install a recent distribution of Linux. To enable NLM lock recovery, ensure your clients host name, as returned by uname -n, matches the host name returned by DNS.
2. The NLM protocol is handled by an in-kernel service in modern kernels, but the user-level rpc.statd program must be running to enable NLM lock recovery. Consult your distributions documentation to determine which /etc/init.d start-up script is used to start it. Start the NSM daemon by invoking this script as root, using the "start" parameter. Consider adding this script to the list of scripts that are automatically run at system start-up. (Red Hat uses the chkconfig command for this purpose).
3. Create the directories on your client where you will mount the NFS shares.
4. Add entries in /etc/fstab corresponding to your mount points (man nfs for details).
5. Use mount -a -t nfs to mount the NFS shares.
6. During system boot-up, most distributions automatically mount NFS shares that are listed in /etc/fstab. If yours doesnt, check your distributions documentation for instructions on how to configure your client to do this.

DeLi Linux stands for "Desktop Light" Linux. It is a Linux Distribution for old computers, from 486 to Pentium MMX 166 or so. Its focused on desktop usage.
DeLi Linux project includes email clients, graphical web browser, an office package with word processor and spreadsheet, and so on. A full install, including XFree and development tools, needs not more than 250 MB of harddisk space.
The trick is, that DeLi Linux uses only "lightweight" alternative software. If you are looking for the newest KDE, GNOME or Mozilla, DeLi Linux will not make you happy. The test computer is a 486 laptop with 16 MB RAM, and all apps which comes with DeLi Linux are running smoothly.
