Red Hat Linux 9

Red Hat Linux is probably the best-known Linux distribution. more>>
Red Hat Linux is probably the best-known Linux distribution. Red Hat Linux is well-supported by commercial software, and tends to be easy to install and have good hardware support out of the box.

Compaq has taken over the maintenance for Red Hat for their Alpha processor - theres a link to their Alpha Red Hat page below.

Red Hat 9 is the last version of Red Hat Linux per se, and Red Hat will stop supporting it soon. Instead they offer a commercial Linux distribution, "Red Hat Enterprise Edition", and a free distribution, "The Fedora Project".

CDlinux 0.4.9 / 0.5.9 Alpha

CDlinux is a CD based mini Linux distribution, which runs from a CDROM. more>>
CDlinux is a CD based mini Linux distribution, which runs from a CDROM. It aims to be a handy administration/rescue tool for system administrators as well as general users.
CDlinux is highly user configurable, supports a wide range of hardware (PCMCIA, SCSI, USB, etc.) and many networking protocols (FTP, SSH, NFS, SMB, DHCP, etc.).
CDlinux also has good support for CJK, especially Simplified Chinese.
These are some useful gadgets from CDlinux. Note, you do not need to download them, if you have downloaded CDlinux. They are already included. They are listed here just in case you may want to use them in a normal Linux installation, and dont want to download the whole CDlinux bundle. And they are also as examples on how works are done under Linux, in a better and more decent way comparing with other platforms.
file-opt (~1k) This shell script finds identical files in the CURRENT directory, and hard link them to save space. Its useful when building so called "N in 1" CD images like "Win2k 3in1" in Linux .
mkisofs-CJK (~380k) This is a patched version of mkisofs-2.0.3, it supports CJK joliet filenames. The original GB (Simplified Chinese) Code Page was derived from the official Linux kernel, and has some errors. I fixed this bug according to the correct cp936 file (~160k). This version can handle GB joliet filenames correctly now.
It also supports the new "joliet-long" parameter, and supports joliet filenames as long as 103 unicode characters (207 bytes). So you can even use it to build "WinPE" CD images in Linux.
The source of the CJK patch is available here (~390k). Note that, this patch is only a quick and dirty hack, I only tested it in Slackware-8.1.
ren2upper (~2k) When being invoked as "ren2upper", this script will change file/folder names in the CURRENT directory to upper case. And, if being invoked as "ren2lower", it will change them to lower case. Its useful when exchanging data between Unix and Windows hosts.
These gadgets are either shell scripts or compiled with gcc-2.95.3 and linked against glibc-2.2.5, so they should run happily on most recent Linux distributions.
Whats New in 0.5.9 Alpha Development Release:
- This release added support for auto-detecting the boot device, support for CDL_DEV=LABEL=xxx, CDL_DEV=UUID=xxx, and CDL_WAIT=n, and support for auto-detecting local partitions.
- The number of supported RAM disks and loop devices was increased to 255.
- Support for locales was improved.
- A ctrl-alt-del problem was fixed and some pkg upgrades were made.

Scientific Linux 5.0 Live CD/DVD

Scientific Linux 5.0 Live CD/DVD

Scientific Linux is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. more>>
Scientific Linux is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters.
The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.
Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. An example of of items that were added are Pine, and OpenAFS.
Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a users wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.
The Scientific Linux project, which rebuilds source packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) into a complete RHEL clone, has released a live CD/DVD edition of their latest version for the i386 and x86_64 architectures:
"The Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD is a bootable CD/DVD that runs Linux directly from CD/DVD without installing. It is based on Scientific Linux 4 It uses Unification File System (Unionfs), allowing read-only file system to behave as a writable one and SquashFS providing on-the-fly decompression that allows to store 2GB of software on a normal CD-ROM. The Live CD/DVD was built using modified scripts from Linux-Live."
Enhancements:
- Scientific Linux Live CD 5.0 has been released for i386 and x86_64 architectures. The Scientific Linux Live CD is a bootable CD that runs Scientific Linux directly from CD without installing. New feature: Live CD can be installed to local hard disk. Major software updates compared to Scientific Linux 4 Live CD: Linux kernel 2.6.18, OpenAFS client 1.4.4, X.Org 7.1, 3D desktop with Compiz and AIGLX, GNOME 2.16.0, OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, Firefox 1.5. Additional features: can be installed on USB key; can be mounted over NFS (as diskless client).

Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.096

Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.096

Lineox Enterprise Linux is based on source RPM packages from which Red Hat Enterprise Linux is compiled. more>>
Lineox Enterprise Linux distribution is based on source RPM packages from which Red Hat Enterprise Linux is compiled. Lineox Enterprise Linux contains all programs included in various Red Hat Enterprise Linux variations (Advanced Server (AS), Entry/Mid Server (ES), and Workstation (WS)).
It also contains programs included in separately sold Red Hat Cluster Suite and Red Hat Developer Suite. Lineox has removed and replaced all files of Red Hat Enterprise Linux which have restrictive copyright by Red Hat, Inc. Lineox has also tried to remove all user-visible references to Red Hat in Lineox Enterprise Linux.
The most notable difference between Lineox Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the support options provided by Red Hat, Inc. Lineox, Inc. does not provide any support for Lineox Enterprise Linux with the base product.
Lineox, Inc. however plans to provide binary package updates for Lineox Enterprise Linux as long as Red Hat, Inc. provides updates for Red Hat Enterprise Linux in source package format.
Lineox has an automated system running on a cluster which builds new binary rpm packages as soon as new source code is available. New rpm packages are usually available in less than 12 hours after source code release.
After that Lineox builds Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux disks automatically, but because of the time it takes to transfer the disk images to our web server, they are available from 2 to 12 hours after we release new packages.
Isnt Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux untested or unreliable if it is released so often? Not really. We dont rebuild the installation environment, we just replace the installable packages with new ones.
You can even use same boot floppies or other boot media created for Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 to boot Always Current series Lineox Enterprise Linux. So Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux is as tested and reliable as a system installed from "base release" and updated later. The only difference really is the work and time saved and the higher security right from the start.
Enhancements:
- Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.096 with Update 4 available. In the version 4.096 the installation environment is rebuilt, so it offers better hardware support during the installation. See the release notes for full information. The x86_64 release requires either AMD Opteron or Athlon64 CPU based computer. Some new Intel Xeon and Pentium IV processors with EM64T (Extended Memory 64 Technology) will also be able to run this version.
