USF FlashMob RC4

USF FlashMob RC4

USF FlashMob is a Live CD made by FlashMobComputing.org more>>
USF FlashMob is a Live CD made by FlashMobComputing.org
USF FlashMob RC4 contains updates that we made to the server code the night before flashmob day. This will allow power users to run larger flashmobs and configure individual nodes with different processor types. In addition we have released the source code for USF_FlashMob_RC_4 (source).
We have put the source for the FlashMob ISO image into the following directories:
- kernel: The patched and modified kernel Linux kernel (2.4.25) that we use on the CD. Kernel modules added to the CD.
- fmtools: The code that runs the FlashMob (fm_* programs).
- mpi: The source for the implementations of MPI on the CD. These are unmodified versions of LAM-MPI and LAMPI.
- blas: The source we used for the ATLAS BLAS libraries. This is unmodified.
- hpl: The modified versions of HPL we used on the CD.
Documentation to build a FlashMob CD does not exist yet. Take a look at the morphix scripts in fmtools. These will let you "unpack" and "pack" a FlashMob CD.

metisse 0.4.0 RC4

metisse 0.4.0 RC4

metisse is an experimental 3D X desktop. more>>
Metisse is constituted by a virtual X server called Xwnc, a special version of FVWM and an FVWM module FvwmAmetista (after Ametista). The project is a free software developed under the GNU General Public License.

Xwnc is a mix of Xvnc and XDarwin. It draws nothing on your screen, every things is drawn into pixmaps. Similarly as Xvnc, but with a different protocol, Xwnc can send these pixmaps (and others information) to a "viewer". FvwmAmetista is such a viewer, it uses OpenGL (via nucleo) for rendering the X desktop into a window of a "regular" 3D accelerated X server.

Installation

You need the Nucleo library installed on your system. For version 0.3.5 you must use nucleo-0.1-20041216. The compilation and installation of nucleo is easy, the usual sequence

./configure; make; su; make install"

should work. The nucleo-config script should be in your PATH.

It is recommanded to install the wm-icons package and to have xclock and xload.

As usual, for preparing the build type:

./configure --prefix=where_you_want_to_install [other relevant options]

the default Xwnc font path is

/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi

you may change this path with the --font-path option. Similarly, you may have to use the "--with-fontenc-file" option if your font encoding directory file is not at /usr/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir.

To enable GLX support (for OpenGL applications) use --enable-glx or --enable-glx-x86 (for a x86 cpu). The OpenGL rendering is not accelerated. Note that glxgear does not work very well for now. The other mesa demo programs work fine as well as the xlock 3D demo but "invert" which crashes Xwnc.

Type

configure --help=recursive

for the full list of options to configure.

Then:

make
su # if needed
make install

Note that the metisse modified FVWM does not replace your regular FVWM. The fvwm executable is called fvwmi and the modules are under prefix/libexec/fvwm-insitu/X.Y.Z/

KANOTIX 2006-01 RC4

KANOTIX 2006-01 RC4

KANOTIX is a Linux live CD based on Knoppix technology using Debian/sid. more>>
KANOTIX is a Linux live CD based on Knoppix technology using Debian/sid.

The included XFree86 is from Debian/experimental. The main specs are: GRUB based startup from CD, ACPI support, DMA default on, additional support for DSL modems (Fritz!Card DSL and Eagle USB), optimal for HD install (you get a working Debian/sid install in about 10 minutes!), kernel forcedeth (for nForce NIC), device mapper and some other patches.

Simply boot from CD and enjoy Linux. Some tools may request a root password. As none is set, you have to set one using "sudo passwd" or use "su" in konsole.

Whenever you execute something with root permissions, you should know what you are doing! For web surfing over LAN no root access is required. I am sure you can discover many things to do with it :)

Dont try to write to NTFS partitions using the standard NTFS driver included with the kernel, as its support for writing is very lacking - thus it could destroy the partition and the data in it.

There is a new Captive NTFS driver that does a better job at writing to NTFS, so use it instead. For FAT partitions you can enable write-access with the context menu (right mouse button).

You may not have the rights to modify Linux partitions, use the root mode in konsole if needed. Some links are not working in the menu - that is not my fault - the packages from Debian/sid are very new and may have some little bugs, but you can always use new releases.
