FSlint 2.22

FSlint 2.22

FSlint is a finds lint on a file system. more>>
FSlint project is a toolkit to find redundant/questionable disk usage. The FSlint command invokes the GUI interface. There is also a command line interface to each tool which can be accessed from the /usr/share/FSlint/fslint directory usually.
The command fslint is a wrapper for the various tools which can be called individually. All the tools (including fslint) have the same interface, which is basically:
command [-r] [-f] [path1 [path2]...]
where the paths are files &/or directories If no paths are specified then the current directory is assumed.
-r means do NOT recurse the specified director{y,ies}
-f means output full paths even if only 1 path specified
some tools have their own options. To get help on each tool do:
command --help
Any extra commands are passed to find, so any of filtering commands will work, for e.g the following means process the whole system but do not traverse onto any other mounted filesystems:
fslint / -xdev
Installation
RPM only. The only difference between the RPM and the source tarball is that the tarball has some extra test directories (fslint/tstlnt). To create the RPM just: rpmbuild -ta FSlint-x.xx.tar.gz
Enhancements:
- Added Spanish translation.
- Added a whitespace indenting checker/fixer.
- Added file rename functionality.
- Fixed multibyte encoding issues.
- Fixed rare issue where files could be deleted in error when merging duplicate files.

Solar Visitor 0.2.1

Solar Visitor 0.2.1

Solar Visitor is a space simulator where the user flies around our Solar System in a 3D view. more>>
Solar Visitor is a space simulator where the user flies around our Solar System in a 3D view. The program and source code are offered free, there are builds for Windows and Linux. Solar Visitor uses the Ogre graphics library. The planets and objects were created with the Blender program.
Because Solar Visitor is a 3D program, performance depends on the capabilities of the users video system.
If you wish you may build from source using available tools but be warned this is not an easy task. An addition to Ogre a compiler and IDE (on Windows) are required. The Ogre web site has installation instructions for its use. Those without c/c++ experience will find themselves jumping in the deep end.
With the release of version 0.2.x the user can view planets rendered from textures which is a vast improvement over the painted colours of 0.1.0. There is still realism to add. For instance, the orbits are engineered to showcase shadow effects and not be realistic, where eclipses are rare.
The program code is released under the GPL, the media are generated from downloadable images on the web, details of location are provided. Images remain the property of respective owners.
Enhancements:
- bugfixes
- tilted orbits

shorten 3.6.0

shorten 3.6.0

shorten is a fast, low complexity waveform coder (i.e. audio compressor), originally written by Tony Robinson at SoftSound. more>>
shorten is a fast, low complexity waveform coder (i.e. audio compressor), originally written by Tony Robinson at SoftSound. It can operate in both lossy and lossless modes. More information can be found here.
The last official version released by Tony was 2.3a. In the fall of 2000, I started hacking on the code to add unix support for seek tables, which Wayne Stielau had developed and implemented for the Windows platform. With his help, I was able to release version 3.0 on 9/29/2000, and have maintained the unix 3.x versions ever since. Seek tables allow one to seek through a .shn file in real-time while playing it in various audio players.
Here are some of plugins that support seek tables:
xmms-shn (for XMMS)
ShnAmp (for WinAmp)
foo_shn (for foobar2000)
in_shn (for J River Media Jukebox/Center)
Shorten plugin (for MacAmp Lite X - now defunct)
Enhancements:
- Fixed a seek table bug which, in rare cases, caused seek tables for certain files (e.g. ones that end with silence) to be generated incorrectly. Seek tables created with the -k, -s or -S options are not affected. To help distinguish older, possibly buggy seek tables from newer ones, the seek table revision number has been bumped from 0 to 1. Thanks to Peter Kunath for the report and the fix.
- Updated the -i option to determine whether a file is an external seek table file, a file with seek tables appended, or neither. If seek tables are present, the seek table revision number is now shown.

IrNET for Linux-IrDA 1.0.0

IrNET for Linux-IrDA 1.0.0

IrNET is a protocol allowing to carry TCP/IP traffic between two IrDA peers in an efficient fashion. more>>
IrNET is a protocol allowing to carry TCP/IP traffic between two IrDA peers in an efficient fashion. It is a thin layer, passing PPP packets to IrTTP and vice versa. It uses PPP in synchronous mode, because IrTTP offer a reliable sequenced packet service (as opposed to a byte stream). In fact, you could see IrNET as carrying TCP/IP in a IrDA socket, using PPP to provide the glue.

The main difference with traditional PPP over IrCOMM is that we avoid the framing and serial emulation which are a performance bottleneck. It also allows multipoint communications in a sensible fashion. We can automatically handle incomming connections through irnetd.

The main difference with IrLAN is that we use PPP for the link management, which is more standard, interoperable and flexible than the IrLAN protocol. For example, PPP adds authentication, encryption, compression, header compression and automated routing setup. And, as IrNET let PPP do the hard work, the implementation is much simpler than IrLAN.

IrNET was first introduced by Microsoft in the IrDA stack of Windows 2000, and they decided to remove both IrCOMM and IrLAN in favor of IrNET in their new IrDA stack. IrNET is a great idea (removing IrLAN and IrCOMM, on the other hand...), however IrNET is not an IrDA specification (at least, not yet, but there are rumors of something called IrDial...).

IrNET has been included in Linux kernel 2.4.0-test11, so all subsequent version of the kernel should support it out of the box (provided everything is set up properly). The latest version is in Linux kernel 2.4.15.

ngrep 1.45

ngrep 1.45

ngrep is a network grep. more>>
ngrep project strives to provide most of GNU greps common features, applying them to the network layer. ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will allow you to specify extended regular or hexadecimal expressions to match against data payloads of packets.
It currently recognizes TCP, UDP, ICMP, IGMP and Raw protocols across Ethernet, PPP, SLIP, FDDI, Token Ring, 802.11 and null interfaces, and understands bpf filter logic in the same fashion as more common packet sniffing tools, such as tcpdump and snoop.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes an under-sized snaplen bug resulting in garbage input to the pattern matcher, a bug in the IPv6/TCP packet length calculation, and a double-free race condition during ngrep termination.
- It reworks packet length calculation in the main processing loop (yielding a performance improvement), simplifies the build system logic, and changed "-s 0 to match tcpdump behaviour.
- It adds support for IEEE802_11_RADIO (radiotap).

Jarmor 1.0

Jarmor 1.0

Jarmor is a tiny collection of java filters implementing ASCII armors. more>>
Jarmor is a tiny collection of java filters implementing ASCII armors.
ASCII armors are data converters between binary format and textual format. They are used for example by mailers to handle mail attachements. They can also be used for example to store binary data in an otherwise textual format, for example XML.
Several popular encoding algorithms exists. They all rely on a small subset of ASCII for the textual format and they all increase the size of the encoded data with respect to the raw binary data. Jarmor supports encoding and decoding using the Base64, Base32, Base16, UUCP and ASCII85 encodings.
These classes extends java.io.FilterInputStream for the decoders and java.io.FilterOutputStream for the encoders. This allows to put them simply in data streams and encode/decode binary streams on the fly.
Enhancements:
- An error in ASCII85Decoder was fixed.
- This error occurred for specific rare byte combinations in the last data chunk when it was not complete (i.e. less than four bytes).
- The encoding class was not affected by the error.
- Jarmor is now considered stable and known to be used in critical production environments.

Apache XML Project

Apache XML Project

Apache XML Project provides commercial-quality standards-based XML solutions and more. more>>
Apache XML Projects goals are:
- to provide commercial-quality standards-based XML solutions that are developed in an open and cooperative fashion,
- to provide feedback to standards bodies (such as IETF and W3C) from an implementation perspective, and
- to be a focus for XML-related activities within Apache projects
The Apache XML Project used to be the home for many XML-related subprojects, many of which have moved to top-level project status recently or are currently in migration. The Apache XML Project slowly transforms into an place where you can find pointers to XML-related projects here in the Apache Software Foundation. The remaining subprojects directly under the supervision of the XML PMC are:
- AxKit - XML-based web publishing, in mod_perl
- Crimson - A Java XML parser derived from the Sun Project X Parser.
- Xang - Rapid development of dynamic server pages, in JavaScript
- Xindice - A native XML database.
- XML Commons - focussed on common code and guidelines for XML projects
- XML Security - Java and C++ implementations of the XML signature and encryption standards

juice 0.03h

juice 0.03h

uice is a frontend for mpg123 and other players. more>>
Juice is a frontend for mpg123 and other players. It provides a nifty dialog-based playlist editor.

In order to play audio files, two player interfaces is provided. The mpg123-specfic interface uses the remote protocol of mpg123 (This feature was introduced in version 0.59r in order to accommodate generic frontends.)

The other player frontend is generic and allows for any player to be used. This is useful if you do not want to limit the functionality of juice to MP3s. Please note that this generic frontend is still in early beta phase and can be buggy.

It basically allows you to browse through your files in a "Midnight Commander"-like fashion. The MP3s you select is treated as a playlist which can be shuffled, rearranged, saved, etc.

fping 2.4b2

fping 2.4b2

fping is a ping like program which uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request to determine if a host is up. more>>
fping is a ping like program which uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request to determine if a host is up. fping is different from ping in that you can specify any number of hosts on the command line, or specify a file containing the lists of hosts to ping.

Instead of trying one host until it timeouts or replies, fping will send out a ping packet and move on to the next host in a round-robin fashion.

If a host replies, it is noted and removed from the list of hosts to check. If a host does not respond within a certain time limit and/or retry limit it will be considered unreachable.

Unlike ping, fping is meant to be used in scripts and its output is easy to parse.

Problem and Issues:

With a large a number of IP addresses in use, its becomes more and more time consuming to check on which IP addresses are actively in use, and which critical machines (routers, bridges, servers, etc) are reachable. One example is we have a program which goes through all of our routers arp caches looking for IP addresses that are in use. After finding a list of IP addresses that arent in any arp caches fping can then be used to see if these IP addresses really arent being used, or are just behind the routers. Checking 2500 hosts (99% of which are unreachable) via ping can take hours.

fping was written to solve the problem of pinging N number of hosts in an efficient manner. By sending out pings in a round-robin fashion and checking on responses as they come in at random, a large number of hosts can be checked at once.

Unlike ping, fping is meant to be used in scripts and its output is easy to parse.
