Puppy Linux 4.2.1

Puppy Linux 4.2.1

Puppy Linux provides you with a perfect and very useful evolutionary operating system which is based on GNU Linux. more>>

Puppy Linux 4.2.1 provides you with a perfect and very useful evolutionary operating system which is based on GNU Linux. Whats different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full featured. Puppy Linux can boot into a 64MB ramdisk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM. Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in its entirety loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly.

Major Features:

  1. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device (flash-Puppy), CDROM (live-Puppy), Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk (zippy-Puppy), floppy disks (floppy-Puppy), internal hard drive (hard-Puppy).
  2. Puppy occupies about 50-60M on my USB Flash drive, CDROM, or whatever is the storage media.
  3. When Puppy boots, everything uncompressed into a RAM area that we call a "ramdisk". The live-CD will bootup on systems with only 32M RAM, but the more RAM you have the more Puppy is able to keep files permanently in ramdisk hence more speed. A PC with 128M RAM is the recommended minimum.
  4. Note that Puppy will automatically use a swap partition if it exists. When booting from a USB Flash device, Puppy tries to load all the Flash files into physical RAM, but if there is not enough RAM then Puppy is able to copy the excess to a swap partition if it exists. This eliminates writes to the Flash memory during a session, greatly extending its life span.
  5. You may need to have a swap partition to run Firefox or Mozilla on PCs with less than 64M RAM. Certainly, for a PC with only 32M RAM, a swap partition is necessary to run most of the large GUI applications.

Enhancements:

  • CUPS-1.3.10 regressed from 1.4b2 to resolve ongoing issues with CUPS printing.
  • Fixed printing from Geany, Leafpad and Gnumeric using CUPS-1.3.10
  • Abiword-2.6.3 with 2.6.6 plugins has been patched for improved .doc & .docx support (Liberation ttf fonts required for some documents)
  • Pwidgets updated to 2.0.8
  • Pcrypt updated to 17 May 2009 release and now requires Ccrypt to function. Bcrypt has been dropped in consequence.
  • Ccrypt-1.7 added as dependency for Pcrypt
  • MIME-types updated in Rox-2.6.1
  • Patches for gtk+ Xinput and b43 broadcom network driver
  • Pmusic updated to 0.6.4
  • Pschedule updated to 0.7
  • Plus previously issued patches for nbtscan, mountcifs, jwm-tray, xsane, network wizard (now at April 4 release), mtpaint-snapshot, gtk+2.12.1-Xinput-fix and pcp (Puppy control panel).

Xpress Linux is a Kubuntu-based distribution developed with a goal of making Linux more accessible to Windows users.

The new theme looks very nice its very brushed and modern looking, its just small things that really impress me, like how when I scroll over to the close button it fades silently into red.

The programs it comes with are very standard but nice nonetheless I really appreciate the Wireless Assistant LAN manager, it works flawlessly. Also I had direct access to all my files on a Windows PC easy through Konqueror, unfortunately we are not finished with the wine setup so the programs didnt work off the bat but you had to install them (Note: this should be fixed in the final version).

There is still no installer, but that will be there soon. So everything is on schedule and expect the November 30th release date (maybe even earlier!)

Pyramid Linux PXE Live CD 12-18-06

Pyramid Linux PXE Live CD 12-18-06

Pyramid is binary linux distro for use on embedded platforms. more>>
Pyramid Linux Projects mission is to build and maintain a high quality, rock solid, entirely open source operating system for wireless networking applications.

Pyramid is binary linux distro for use on embedded platforms. It is primarily focused on wireless applications however people have found many great uses for it. We primarily develop and test Pyramid for Metrix Boxes, but it works well on other x86 based hardware as well. Check the WorkingHardware page for more info or add to it if you find hardware not listed that works with Pyramid.

Pyramid is currently maintained by a few people at Metrix Communication. We are open to bringing more people on board the Pyramid team to move the OS further. We always accept patches and contributions for review. We ship Pyramid on our wireless products, which was the main motivation behind its creation. However we believe in making Pyramid as flexible as possible so it will work on as many x86 embedded platforms as possible. We build Pyramid for ourselves and the community regardless of whose hardware they choose to run it on.

Wireless Tools 27

Wireless Tools 27

The Wireless Tools is a set of tools allowing to manipulate the Linux Wireless Extensions. more>>
The Linux Wireless Extension and the Wireless Tools are an Open Source project sponsored by Hewlett Packard (through my contribution) since 1996, and build with the contribution of many Linux users all over the world.

The Wireless Extension (WE) is a generic API allowing a driver to expose to the user space configuration and statistics specific to common Wireless LANs. The beauty of it is that a single set of tool can support all the variations of Wireless LANs, regardless of their type (as long as the driver support Wireless Extension).

Another advantage is these parameters may be changed on the fly without restarting the driver (or Linux).

The Wireless Tools (WT) is a set of tools allowing to manipulate the Wireless Extensions. They use a textual interface and are rather crude, but aim to support the full Wireless Extension. There are many other tools you can use with Wireless Extensions, however Wireless Tools is the reference implementation.

iwconfig manipulate the basic wireless parameters
iwlist allow to initiate scanning and list frequencies, bit-rates, encryption keys...
iwspy allow to get per node link quality
iwpriv allow to manipulate the Wireless Extensions specific to a driver (private)
ifrename allow to name interfaces based on various static criteria

Most Linux distributions also have integrated Wireless Extensions support in their networking initialisation scripts, for easier boot-time configuration of wireless interfaces. They also include Wireless Tools as part of their standard packages.
Wireless configuration can also be done using the Hotplug scripts and distribution specific support, this enable the proper support of any removable wireless interface (Pcmcia, CardBus, USB...).

Any versions of the Pcmcia package offer the possibility to do wireless configuration of Pcmcia and Cardbus card through thefile wireless.opts. This allow to fully integrate wireless settings in the Pcmcia scheme mechansism. However, this method is now deprecated in favor of distribution specific methods.

Please note that the Wireless Tools (starting with version 19) supports fully IEEE 802.11 parameters and devices, support older style of devices and most proprietary protocols, and are prepared to handle HiperLan as well. More recent versions of course adds more 802.11 support.

But, unfortunately not all drivers support all these features...

ProMEPIS Linux is a Linux OS based on Debian that can be run from your CD drive without installation. more>>
ProMEPIS Linux is a linux distribution based on Debian that can be run from your CD drive without installation.

Where it shines is its easy, 100% "point and click" installation, and automatic detection of not only "normal" computer hardware but also popular webcams, the latest wireless network cards, "Winmodems" that usually work only with Windows, digital cameras, scanners, and other devices.

The difference between SimplyMEPIS and ProMEPIS is that SimplyMEPIS will continue to be a freely available desktop MEPIS bootable CD and ProMEPIS will designate an upcoming multi-CD packaged version of MEPIS.
