Kopete is a flexible and extendable multiple protocol instant messaging system designed as a plugin-based system. more>>
Kopete is an instant messenger supporting AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus SameTime, and more. Kopete is designed to be a flexible and extensible multi-protocol system suitable for personal and enterprise use.

The goal of Kopete is to provide users with a single easy-to-use way to access all of their instant messaging systems. The interface puts people first, and is integrated with the system address book to let you access your contacts from other KDE applications.

IM can be intrusive, but Kopetes notification system can be tuned so that only important contacts interrupt you. Kopete also features tools to enhance your IM, such as message encryption, archiving, and many other fun and useful effects.

Kopete supports all commonly used instant messaging protocols, and the Kopete team provides templates for developers to base new plugins on. Our API provides developers with many features to ease supporting a new protocol. All protocols are plugins and allow modular installation, configuration, and usage.

LibFloyd 0.12.2

LibFloyd 0.12.2

Floyd is an advanced 3D scene graph library, exploiting Gtk+, OpenGL and other advanced techniques.
I was very impressed both of the ease of use and power of Gtk+ toolkit and especially the superb 2D graphics library GnomeCanvas. Looking around for something similar in 3D world, left me in complete disappointment. All existing toolkits had the following disadvantages:
Were proprietary
Were written in C++ or Java
Were overcomplicated
Lacked essential features
I completely admit, that C++ is good language for program development, but it is not, in any means, suitable for libraries. The main problem is, that C++ classes can be extended only in C++. With C/Gtk+ classes, in contrary, it is possible to derive new classes runtime, using scripting languages or user interface. Gtk+ flexibility has been proven by more than dozen different language bindings available to it.
Main features:
- extremely flexible object-oriented structure
- 3DNow! accelerated library of 2D/3D primitives
- state preserving OpenGL objects with on-demand execution
- tree of virtual world objects with asynchronous rendering
- asynchronous collision detection
- vision rays and ray collision
- exact and preferred-time timers

Absolute Linux 12.2.5 / 13.0 RC2

Absolute Linux 12.2.5 / 13.0 RC2

Absolute Linux is a lightweight modification of Slackware. more>>

Absolute Linux 12.2.5 / 13.0 RC2 is an excellent software which functions as a lightweight modification of Slackware. Makes configuration and maintenance much easier, has common applications installed and configured. Plays audio CDs, DVDs and movies "out of the box", easy to configure and simple to use.

Major Features:

  1. Uses icewm/rox-filer for window/file managers.
  2. Has backup of fluxbox/fox pathfinder.
  3. Installer is same setup as Slackware, with a couple changes.
  4. Automatically installs all packages that weight in at 1.7Gb when complete.
  5. Is a modification of Slackware
  6. Fast, stay-out-of-your-way desktop. No Gnome or KDE. Uses well integrated collection of the best lightweight software to give you most of the things the "big desktops" give you, only at at much, much faster pace.
  7. The software folks use on a desktop: Firefox, OpenOffice, Pidgin chat, GIMP image editor, WPClipart, Thunderbird mail, K3B CD/DVD burning, Frostwire P2P, Deluge BitTorrent, 2 dictionaries, a bunch of games -- basically any of the latest, most popular Open Source software.
  8. Many script utilities (with friendly little GUIs) to make configuration and maintenance of system easier and still allows manual (text-file based) configuration, if desired.
  9. Package compatible with Slackware minor versions. (ex. Absolute 12.2 -> Slackware-12.2), with a few exceptions: kernel packages, KDE-libs, madwifi, ndiswrapper, svga-helper, a/etc.
  10. Root user can install software or set system configurations. That's it. Perfect for parents and IT guys. If you want to do something root user is allowed to do, log in as root. That's what the account is for.

Enhancements:

  • Interface updated along with kernel, python, packaging system which is now txz-based and due to higher compression the main release contains much more than previously: OpenOffice and Java, as well as many other applications now fit on a single CD.
  • Pcmanfm and rox have both been modified to seamlessly work with the TXZ package archives as well as the new "Add/Remove Programs" item in root menu.
  • New volume control (now in system tray, sleeker.)
  • New theme, more complete file type handling.
  • Midori installed from main ISO, option to change to default in control panel.
  • New KDE libs (in support of new K3B), a large number of interface tweaks, mostly to do with filetype handling.
  • Seems pretty stable, looking for bug reports.

re2c 0.12.2 / 0.13.0

re2c is a tool for writing fast and flexible lexers. more>>
re2c is a tool for writing flexible and fast lexers. Unlike other such tools, it concentrates solely on generating efficient code for matching regular expressions.
This make it suitable for a wide variety of applications. The generated scanners approach hand-crafted ones in terms of size and speed.
Whats New in 0.13.0 Development Release:
- his brand new development version of re2c comes with initial support for (f)lex like conditions. That is, this version is the first step towards full condition support where re2c checks for a condition and based on that switches to a specific sub block handling only rules for that specific condition.
- This verison is fully compatible with older versions and in fact you need the new switches -c and -t to get condition support. Also a lot of new inplace configurations have been added.
- Check out the manual or man page for new stuff.
Whats New in 0.12.2 Stable Release:
- This new stable version of re2c fixes issue on Mac OS X. (See issue #1743180 fwrite with 0 length crashes on OS X).

Send with Kopete 0.11

Send with Kopete 0.11

Send with Kopete is a servicemenu for sending files with Kopete application. more>>
Send with Kopete is a servicemenu for sending files with Kopete application. It shows a dialog containing all contacts in Kopete which are able to receive files and after selecting one of them, the file is sent to that contact.
Ive tested it only with jabber protocol (the only one I can use for sending files). Servicemenu was tested with KDE 3.5.4 and Kopete 0.12.2.
Although the script used by this servicemenu is very simple, Im sure there are some bugs, so feedback is very welcome.
Installation:
After decompressing the archive, you should put the swk.sh script somwhere in your PATH directory and eventually change its owner and acces permissions to be executable. The other file, send_with_kopete.desktop, should be placed in your servicemenus directory (in my case it is ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus).
Enhancements:
- Fixed bug in script, which caused wrong handling of files containing spaces

Cone 0.71

Cone 0.71

Cone is a text-based email client. more>>
Cone project is a text-based mail client. Cone seamlessly handles multiple POP3, IMAP accounts, and local mail folders.
Cone is also a simple newsreader. Cones interface is foolproof enough to be used by inexperienced users, but it also offers advanced features for power users.
Main features:
- An online tutorial provides a quick overview of Cones main features.
- A built-in text editor for editing new messages, with search/replace and spell checking (requires aspell or pspell).
- Shortcuts - assign frequently used text to a function key, or to an abbreviation. Insert the text by pressing the function key or typing its abbreviation.
- Supports UTF-8 consoles (requires the wide-character version of the curses library).
- Displays HTML mail, with automatic de-moronization ("smart quotes", and similar clutter, is replaced by plain garden-variety punctuation).
- Displays attached images, if invoked from an X terminal, by running Gnomes eog, or KDEs kview image viewer. Displays PDF attachments by running xpdf. Other, or alternative, helper applications will be added as time permits.
- After attachments are downloaded, they can be optionally removed from the message.
- Handles local mail folders, maildirs, IMAP and POP3 accounts, and Usenet newsgroups. All folders are shown in a hierarchical tree-like display.
- Supports access to servers through a Socks 5 proxy, using the Courier Socks 5 API toolkit.
- Sends mail using an external SMTP server (with/without authentication), or the local sendmail command.
- All network protocols support SSL/TLS and SASL (CRAM-MD5, CRAM-SHA1, and LOGIN).
- Address books (which can be stored in an IMAP folder).
- Remote configuration (share a common configuration between different instances of Cone).
- An optional "single sign-on". Use a single master password for multiple remote mail server accounts.
- PGP/GPG based encryption, and digital signatures. Sent messages are automatically signed. Different signing keys may be selected for different mail accounts, and the appropriate key is automatically selected when replying to a message from an account. Selecting a message for an encryption automatically looks up keys that match the recipients E-mail addresses.
- Import, export, forward and receive PGP/GPG keys as MIME attachments.
- When a single sign-on master password is installed, the master password also handles access to passphrase-protected keys.
- Cone shares a lot of its code base with the Courier mail server, which is why they share the same web site together.
- Cone also serves as a platform for development of a new experimental network mail access protocol, SMAP, that offers additional functionality not available with IMAP or POP3.
- Cone owes its versatility in handling a large variety of mail protocols to the fact that its based on LibMAIL, a generic C++ library that provides a high-level mail-handling API. Using the --with-devel configuration setting installs the LibMAIL toolkit, which allows for development of independent E-mail software.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes a bug in GPG signing of multi-part messages whose main content contains 8-bit text.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.12 / 2.0.0.6

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.12 / 2.0.0.6

Mozilla Thunderbird is a total redesign of the Mozilla mail component. more>>
Mozilla Thunderbird is a full-featured email, RSS and newsgroup client that makes emailing safer, faster and easier than ever before.
It offers some advantages over other mail clients, including junk mail classification. Built from Mozilla code, Mozilla Thunderbird uses Gecko, the most standards-compliant rendering engine in existence.
In addition to the feature set found in Mozilla Mail, Thunderbird has several new features and improvements to make your mail and new experience better.
Main features:
- Adaptive Junk Mail Controls
- RSS Integration
- Saved Search Folders
- Saved Search Folders display messages based on previously set search criteria. For example, instead of filtering messages into a new folder, you can create a Saved Search Folder that lists all the messages received from a certain person over the past 30 days, even if those messages are stored in different folders and subfolders.
- Global Inbox Support
- POP3 users can now combine all of their POP3 accounts into a single global inbox under local folders.
- Message Grouping
- You can now group messages in a folder by attributes such as date, sender, priority or a custom label. For instance, a folder grouped by date will group messages from today, yesterday, last week, etc. into self-contained groups in the message list pane. (View > Sort By > Grouped By Sort)
- Privacy Protection
- In order to help protect your privacy, Thunderbird now automatically blocks remote image requests in emails from senders you dont know.
- Comprehensive Mail Migration from other Mail Clients
- Switching to Thunderbird has never been easier since Thunderbird can now migrate all of your email data including settings, mail folders and address book data from common mail applications such as the Mozilla 1.x Suite, Outlook Express, Outlook and Eudora.
Enhancements:
- Unescaped URIs passed to external programs
- Privilege escalation through chrome-loaded about:blank windows

Anti-censorship Tools (proxyTools) 2004.12.2

Anti-censorship Tools (proxyTools) 2004.12.2

ProxyTools is a package of Perl network utilities designed mainly to assist those whose Internet access is censored, unreliable. more>>
ProxyTools is a package of Perl network utilities designed mainly to assist those whose Internet access is censored, unreliable, or otherwise damaged. Uncensored access is provided to any outside service required (Usenet News, Web browsing, IRC, Socks etc.). Setup requires installation of Perl and some modules; this is doable by even a novice MS Windows user with email instruction, allowing help to be provided to those inside these countries from expert users outside.

In pursuit of this rather non-specific goal, some interesting network utilities are already produced. We think the code is interesting in itself, useful in other areas, and would welcome contributions to the overall sum of ideas, concepts and ideals expressed in these tools.

The project is of interest to the following groups of people:

those who live in Internet censoring countries (or corporations, schools, universities) such as the Middle East (United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Syria), China, Burma, etc.
those who would wish to assist those in the group above.
those who are interested in Perl code dealing with many aspects of networks at the socket level, and transactions using HTTP proxies. One tool in this project offers a failover capability, and intelligent choice, between various censor-bypassing strategies and network paths, offering the user a robust, uncensored connection even in a low bandwidth, unreliable, packet filtered and proxy-poor environment.
those who administer the firewalls which do the censoring, and those who might be considering this.
those who are just curious about the current techniques used by the first group above.

Gentoo Linux 2007.0 LiveCD

Gentoo Linux 2007.0 LiveCD

Gentoo Linux uses an enhanced BSD ports-style package system. more>>
The Gentoo Release Engineering team proudly announces the release of Gentoo Linux 2006.0. Gentoo Linux 2006.0, the first release in the 2006 series, represents improvements across many architectures since the 2005.1 release.

Major highlights in the release include KDE 3.4.3, GNOME 2.12.2, XFCE 4.2.2, GCC 3.4.4 and a 2.6.15 kernel. This is also the first release with the Gentoo Linux Installer officially debuting on the x86 LiveCD, which will fully replace the Universal and PackageCD set. The LiveCD also features a fully-fledged Gnome environment. Later releases will include KDE support as well as a new LiveDVD.

The PPC64 team has made significant improvements in its release media. IBMs hardware donation to the team greatly helped this and ensured a smooth release. The CDs feature 64-bit kernels and 32-bit userlands rather than the previous pure 64-bit environment. Optimized stages are available for the G5 and POWER5 processors, making Gentoo the first distribution optimized for POWER5 out-of-the-box. The new release includes an experimental CD with full framebuffer support for dual-core G5 machines along with thermal management features. This makes Gentoo the first to market with release media with this level of support.

PPC and PPC64 profiles received further reorganization. They now match those of other 32/64-bit architectures such as SPARC and MIPS, unifying the look of the tree and allowing easier creation of specific profiles (for example, for server use) in the future. The PPC discs improve support for newer Apple laptops such as the last series of PowerBooks, which 2005.1 did not support, and feature improved OldWorld support with BootX on the universal CDs. The PPC team now produces the PackageCDs in a G4 and a ppc-generic configuration, especially useful for older and slower machines.

The Hardened team is pleased to release both 2.4 and 2.6 kernel targeted stages for the x86 platform. The previously experimental non-multilib AMD64 stages are now part of the 2006.0 release, while Hardened Gentoo with multilib on AMD64 has become possible and the team is releasing experimental stages.

The 2006.0 AMD64 release moves EM64T support out of the experimental realm. The InstallCDs feature support for NVIDIA SATA and for SysKonnect Yukon2 network cards as well as the inclusion of 32-bit Java Support. An experimental LiveCD is also available, featuring the Gentoo Linux Installer.

The Alpha team now provides split NPTL profiles as part of the 2006.0 release -- NPTL must use a 2.6 kernel, and those who require a 2.4 kernel or do not wish to enable NPTL can use the no-nptl subprofile instead to not take advantage of the new threading model. Stage tarballs are now provided for both variants, and the InstallCD provides both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.

SPARC has moved to GCC 3.4.5 from the older 3.3 series and also to glibc 2.3.5 from 2.3.3 -- the profile features a 2.6 kernel and headers. However, this feature remains experimental and the SPARC team built the release media with the 2.4 subprofile. Testing from SGI Quality Assurance allowed the IA64 team to update its InstallCD to boot on SGI Prism machines.

Gentoo Linux is a community-driven project committed to producing a high-quality open source distribution; more information regarding this release, such as detailed release notes will be available on the Gentoo Release Engineering teams project page.

Gentoo Linux uses an enhanced BSD ports-style package system.
