How Fast Is It?
Short answer:Much faster than any other Java implementation that I have tested and (surprisingly) even faster than the native, non-Java MD5 implementation on some systems.
Long answer:First of all, it is important to note that the term "fast" is used here in relative terms. The implementation of the MD5 message digest algorithm available on this page is written in Java and is fast compared with other implementations written in Java, both because it is heavily optimized by itself and because there is an optional native method that makes it even faster when the platform supports it. How it compares to a sensible implementation written in a language, such as C, that is compiled directly to machine code, is heavily dependent upon how good of a job the JIT compiler in your JVM does in compiling the code or whether you are able to use the optional native method.
Enhancements:
- Martin West contributed a bug fix and some code refactoring to make all targets work out of the box in the Ant build file. Previously, the "dist" target did not work if the "docs" directory was not present.

The Hecl Programming Language is a high-level scripting language implemented in Java. Hecl Programming Language is intended to be small, extensible, extremely flexible, and easy to learn and use.

Hecl is intended as a complement to the Java programming language, not a replacement. As such, it tries to do well what Java doesnt, and leaves those tasks to Java for which it is best suited.

Hecl aims to be a very immediate language - you can pick it up and start doing useful things with it quickly. It is also meant to be easy to learn. Where Java is verbose and rigid, Hecl is forgiving and quick to write. For instance, System.out.println("Hello World"); vs puts "Hello World" - 41 keystrokes (shifted letters count double) versus 22. Hecl is built to "scale down".

This makes Hecl ideal for large applications written in Java that would like to provide a user friendly scripting interface, rather than, say, a clunky XML based configuration system.

Hecl is also a small language with a minimal core. The idea is to provide only whats necessary in the language itself, and as needed, add in extensions for specific tasks.

Core Hecl is small enough to run on my Nokia 3100 cell phone as a J2ME application, presenting the interesting possibility of writing scripts, or at some point, maybe even scripting entire applications, for devices running embedded Java. As an example, you can try this MIDlet: Hecl.jar Hecl.jad

SCALAR

Any primitive or encapsulated primitive: int, or Integer, or String, etc.

PRIMITIVE

Only primitive types like int, float, double, byte, etc.

STRING

An incarnation of java.lang.String.

A java.util.Vector.

The boolean tag just exports the constants TRUE as 1 and FALSE as 0.

Ganymed SSH2 for Java is a library which implements the SSH-2 protocol in pure Java (tested on J2SE 1.4.2 and 5.0).
Ganymed SSH2 for Java allows one to connect to SSH servers from within Java programs. It supports SSH sessions (remote command execution and shell access), local and remote port forwarding, local stream forwarding, X11 forwarding and SCP.
There are no dependencies on any JCE provider, as all crypto functionality is included.
Ganymed SSH2 for Java is used in the Ganymed replication project and a couple of other projects here at the IKS group.
Main features:
- 100% Java implementation of the SSH-2 protocol (tested on J2SE 1.4.2 and 5.0)
- No dependency on any JCE provider, all crypto functionality is included in the Ganymed SSH2 for Java library.

- Thread safe, multiple threads can concurrently execute commands, open shells etc. on the same SSH connection.

Enhancements:
- This release has support for SFTP v3, HTTP proxies, connection monitoring, improved port forwarding, better compatibility for the Diffie-Hellman group exchange, and enhancements in the SCP code.

PhotoDirectory project is a cross platform (Java) application to organize digital images. Great effort has been given to keeping these pictures in an order accessible without the need for any organization software - no databases are required.
PhotoDirectory was written using Java version 1.5 (commonly called 5.0 for some reason or another). You cannot run it on anything less than this. Depending on your system, you may need to explicitly state which Java VM to use. If you use Macintosh OS X, I include an application package that does everything for you. If you dont use OS X, now is a great time to try.

Java + information flow (Jif in short) is a security-typed programming language that extends Java with support for information flow control and access control, both at compile time and at run time.

The source code for the Jif compiler and run-time system is now available for download. Jif is written in Java and is built using the Polyglot extensible Java compiler framework.

Static information flow control can protect the confidentiality and integrity of information manipulated by computing systems. The compiler tracks the correspondence between information the policies that restrict its use, enforcing security properties end-to-end within the system. After checking information flow within Jif programs, the Jif compiler translates them to Java programs and uses an ordinary Java compiler to produce secure executable programs.

Jif extends Java by adding labels that express restrictions on how information may be used. For example, the following variable declaration declares not only that the variable x is an int, but also that the information in x is governed by a security policy:

int {Alice→Bob} x;

In this case, the security policy says that the information in x is controlled by the principal Alice, and that Alice permits this information to be seen by the principal Bob. The policy {Alice←Bob} means that information is owned by Alice, and that Alice permits it to be affected by Bob. Based on label annotations like these, the Jif compiler analyzes information flows within programs, to determines whether they enforce the confidentiality and integrity of information.

The Java Exorcist projects aim is to create a small and easy to use tool, that can be used to extend the Java language syntactically. Why would you do that? There are basically two reasons:
First, you just might want to fix your pet-peeve in the language itself. For example, create new keywords like unless, foreach, new operators, or generate setter getters automatically for a bean property.

Secondly, you might tune the language itself for a specific project, so the project code may look more clean and thought out. For example: specific logger keyword, which automatically checks (if statement) whether the logger should be invoked or not, or even ommits the whole logging compile-time, when its disabled! Or create a method modifier transaction to enclose the whole method in a project specific transaction.

How it works on the outside

Exorcist is a compiler of extended Java code. The compiler can be used in command-line mode, or through Ant. Basically, with no extensions configured, Exorcist only compiles the standard java code. To extend the language, you can plug in classes, which extend a single interface of the exorcist framework, and implement a single (and simple) method. Thats it.

How it works inside

Exorcist works like a pre-processor. It translates the extended language into plain Java code, and then compiles it using the standard Java compiler (javac).

To analyze a language, there are two steps involved. The first is a Lexical analysis, the second is the Parsing of the lexical tokens. Lexical tokens are strings, numbers, operators, dots, semicolons, etc. These are also called terminal symbols, because they can not be analyzed further. During parsing, lexical tokens are read, and non-terminal symbols may be produced.

These include things like: expression, method body, declaration, if-statement, etc. The Exorcists tranformation engine works basically with lexical token lists. Each extension first matches itself to the start of the received token list, using terminal and non-terminal symbols freely. If the match is detected, the extension is free to modify the input token list as it pleases, and with it modify the output clean Java source code.

The Ogg for Java library is a (from scratch) Java implementation of the Ogg protocol, compatible with Java 1.1 or higher.

The Ogg protocol itself is a media stream container, which can hold any type of media (for example a video stream format, audio stream format). It is also capable of multiplexing these streams (it can hold both an audio and video stream at the same time, making it possible to play back audio and video simultaniously), and also to chain (concatenate) streams. A main advantage is, that it is freely available (as a protocol), and to this date it is also patent-free.

NetMinds implementation follows the idea of free software, and is licensed under the LGPL, which basically means, You can use the software, incorporate it in commercial software unmodified. Or you can modify it and use parts of it as long as You release it back to the world under the same license.

Please note, that the Ogg protocol itself is NOT an audio or video codec, so it cannot compress video or audio data, it is only a container. If you are searching for the latter, you might want to visit Xiph.org which hosts/sponsors/advertises many open mulimedia related projects, such as Theora (an open video codec), or Vorbis (an open audio codec).

The aim of this project is to produce an easy-to-use interface to the Ogg protocol in the Java language, hiding as much internal mechanisms as possible, preserving all features on the interface. This may or may not be the philosophy you are searching for. If not, you may want to check out JOrbis which is also an implementation of the Ogg protocol (and more).
