LPQ Control 1.0

LPQ Control 1.0

LPQ Control is a PHP script that parses the output of the lpq command. more>>
Anyone who has spent enough time in Linux probably believes that you can never have enough control.

LPQ Control PHP script is a tool that parses the output of the lpq command and provides a web interface that allows you to remove print jobs from a printer.

You need to make sure that Apache can execute the lprm command. For a
default Apache installation, you will need to add the following line to
your /etc/sudoers file:

apache ALL=(root) NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/lprm

This allows the PHP program to remove *ANY* specified print job.

Crystality Plugin 0.92

Crystality Plugin 0.92

Crystality Plugin consists of XMMS plugin and stdin/stdout plugin. more>>
Crystality Plugin consists of XMMS plugin and stdin/stdout plugin. It was written for realtime remastering of sound from mp3 files.
You will need a reasonably good stereo and a good ear to notice quality
improvement, otherwise this is not for you.

This plugin tries to patch mp3 format flaws, not a poor audio hardware! Yes, you should be able to hear well enough (sorry) - for some of my friends plugin is a cool thing, while the others does not hear nothing but echo and stereo expander (well, you will hear every effect if you set it to the maximum, but it will not sound nice).

Crystality was written for 16bit 44.1kHz stereo sound and may give strange results
with other sound formats.

Damian Hodgkiss sent me a quick port for Winamp 2.x. I have not tried it yet, but you can get it (cr-quick-winamp-port.zip).

This plugin does mainly four things (and some minor tricks):

1. Adds some sounds in very high frequency range. Most of the mp3s in The Net are flawed with a 16(15?) kHz cutoff. Even these ones compressed at high bitrates. This spectrum hole is audible and very unpleasant. This plugin helps a bit. Old mp3s made from the vinyl or the magnetic tape may also sound better with these "steroids". For old mp3s youll probably need to set filter to 0.1.

2. Adds some even harmonic distortions (actually nonlinearity), that sounds nice. Valve amps introduce even harmonic distortions (although differnt way) Look at audiophile pages for more info (well, mp3 format is not an audiophile stuff at all, but... welcome to the real world...).

3. Adds simple, but nice 3D echo (concert hall or church like). Most of echo plugins sounds too hard and aggresively for me. This one does not.

4. Extends stereo.

USING:

There are currently two versions of plugin - XMMS plugin and stdin/stdout. Stdin/out plugin is completly independent of XMMS plugin. It even stores its configuration in a separate file (~/.crystalityrc). Stdin/out plugin is alpha code, so some features are missed. You cannot reopen configuration dialog after closing without restarting plugin, there are no "save config", "load config" buttons. Configuration is loaded automatically on startup and saved on exit, either on normal finish or ^C. You can disable GUI with -g option (useful in scripts).

Because this plugin adds some sounds at high frequencies, you will probably need to decrease treble level on your amplifier. Plugin does not perform normalization, so you should slightly decrease signal level in XMMS equalizer (NOT volume slider on the main panel). Setting sliders to the maximum is generally a bad idea (well, except the filter, where that setting is useful).

PERFORMANCE:

It eats about 15% of CPU on my AMD K6-2/400 and optimization is still possible, this is not highly optimized code.

INSTALLATION:

Distribution contains binary version of XMMS plugin library and stdin/stdout plugin executable (Linux i586, glibc 2.1.3). You may copy plugin library file (libcrystality.so) into XMMSs Effect directory and executable (crystality-stdio) to /usr/local/bin or any location you prefer. For default locations simply type:

make install

and thats it.
You may also build crystality from the source.

make buildinstall

typed as root in the source directory should be all you have to do.

This plugin was my first small step in gtk programming, so dont expect any wonders, GUI is actually a quick hack to hardcoded settings. I am not a GUI programmer.

scrssfeed is a simple filter to use in mail programs to grab URLs from the messages that state that spamcop "has accepted X mails for processing" and convert them to RSS so they can be used as a "live bookmark" in a browser.

scrssfeed is a very simple script that does one thing: convert the spamcop links in a has accepted X e-mails for processing mail to urls in an RSS feed.

You can then use this feed as a live bookmark in Firefox (and probably in other browsers) using for example the open in tabs option to follow all urls at once.

The scripts expects the mail on stdin and looks for the right urls.

The output is saved to spamcop.rdf, you will probably need to adjust the path to something that fits your web installation.

Cool Blue 1.0

Cool Blue is a desktop widget for SuperKaramba for system monitoring.

It has cool blue translucent background (which I made with help of Karbon14, Krita and the mighty Gimp) and displays everything I need (and probably what you need too).

It can interact with XMMS. Well, its a matter of personal taste, but I still like XMMS more than AmaroK...

Anyway, if you want, it should be easy changing it to use amaroK. Maybe even Ill do this if I have free time and appropriate mood.

Virtual Console init 2.0.1

Virtual Console init 2.0.1

Virtual Console init is an /sbin/init clone for virtual consoles. more>>
Virtual Console init is an /sbin/init clone for virtual consoles. It is very easy to set up and use because it has no configuration files.
It is very small and has builtin getty, login, klogd, and slogd. Virtual Console init is suitable for embedded systems and home Linux boxes.
This is a new kind of "init" that only works for the virtual console, so dont try it to login from a serial line. The idea is having a very simple init for home Linux systems (although it could work on other systems as well, who knows...), allowing for a simpler and cleaner configuration. It is useful too in embedded systems or tiny boot disks (maybe as a complement for "busybox"). In other words: it works for me, I use it and Im releasing it in the hope of it being useful for others.
The binary itself doesnt accept parameters, so lets go directly to the behaviour... It must be run by "root" and have PID 1, so dont try to run it yourself, it wont work... You should install it under "/sbin/init", and the kernel will run it automatically at boot.
Take into account that this "init" has both the "getty" and "login" parts built-in, not as separate binaries. This means that if you have a server or another binary which needs "/bin/login", it probably WONT WORK. The sysklog system (kernel logger and system logger, "klogd" and "slogd") are built-in, too. You dont need sysklogd or equivalent, unless you want some feature of them... In that case, you can disable the builtin system.
Enhancements:
- vcinit is now licensed under the GPLv2 only, and not necessarily any later version of the GPL.

DailyTasks 0.1

DailyTasks 0.1

DailyTasks project is a program for reminding you of daily tasks. more>>
DailyTasks project is a program for reminding you of daily tasks.
I, basically, created DailyTasks to fulfill a need of my own. I am much too disorganized to use "standard" task managemenet programs: every time I tried, I seemed to spend more time setting up and updating tasks than I actually spent doing the tasks themselves... On the other hand, a simple way of reminding me of them would be useful.
Also, most tasks seem to be of the repeating kind. That is, its something you have to do every day. What I needed, then, was a way to remind me -- or simply to show me -- that, today, I still had this, that and that to do.
I looked around for some already existing software to do exactly this... and found only one: frequent-task-reminder. Its based on the concept of "work units"; that is, after you set up a task, it increases by one remaining work unit each day. It was mostly what I wanted, but, after trying it out, I quickly found that there were a couple of features I wanted it to have, and it didnt. The main one was this: there should be an option to stop increasing the work units above 1. Some tasks simply dont accumulate. Oh, and I wanted a web interface, too.
The web interface, I even ended up writing myself. :) But frequent-task-reminder is written in Python, a language I have about zero experience with. While this would be a good excuse to learn it, :), I decided, instead, to start from scratch, and write DailyTasks, in PHP.
Main features:
- Web interface included as an alternative to command line mode
- Tasks file is a simple, easy to edit text file, instead of XML
- 3 task modes: normal (increases one work unit per day), max 1 (doesnt increase beyond 1 remaining work unit), and standby (doesnt increase at all)
- Ability to manually set the remaining work units for a task
- Doesnt keep track of dates; requires a special invocation (usually by cron) to increase work units
- Written in PHP instead of Python.
Installation
Command line
First, you need PHP. I only tested DailyTasks on PHP 5.x, but the 4.x versions should work as well.
If you compiled PHP by hand, you probably have everything you need already. If youre using a precompiled package, note that many distributions separate PHP in two packages: the "web" version and the "command line" version. You need the latter (and any dependencies it may have). On Ubuntu, for instance, its called php5-cli.
After you have PHP, simply put the dailytasks file somewhere in your path. Edit it and, if needed, change the first line to point to where you have php installed (it may be in /usr/bin/php, /usr/local/bin/php, or, in rare cases, something else).
Web interface
Requirements: a web server (probably Apache) with PHP support.
You need to install the command line version first, of course (see above). Warning: if youre using a chrooted Apache, you need to put dailytasks somewhere inside the chroot.
Finally, just put all the DailyTasks *.php and *.css files on an accessible web directory. Add some kind of authentication, possibly using a .htaccess file, if needed.
Usage
Command line
Simply run dailytasks without any parameters, and youll get this help:
Available options:
-x : increase each tasks work units by one. Typically used by cron.
-a task : add a new task called task. Use quotes if the name has more
than one word.
-l : list all tasks
-c : list all tasks with 1 or more pending work units.
-w tasknumber : work -- reduce tasks pending units by 1.
-r tasknumber : set remaining work units for that task to zero.
-m tasknumber mode: set the tasks type to the listed mode.
available modes are:
0: stand-by -- work units dont increase automatically.
1: max 1 -- work units increase up to 1 (i.e. no accumulation).
2: normal -- work units increase by 1 each day, with no limit.
-s tasknumber units: set remaining work units to the supplied value.
-d tasknumber: delete the task completely. Task numbers change after this operation.
You should probably add:
0 0 * * * path/to/dailytasks -x
to your crontab.
Web interface
The web interface is (hopefully) self-explanatory, as long as you are aware of the command line options (see above). I may attempt to make any future versions more user friendly.

Katakana Table

Katakana Table

Katakana Table is a katakana table karamba theme. more>>
Katakana Table is a katakana table karamba theme. Useful for learning katakana. When one clicks on a character a passive popup will come up with the romaji and hiragana for that katakana.

If you middle click a character it will copy it to the clipboard. This theme uses unicode so your local probably needs to be utf8.

I havent tested that, im just speculating. works well with my hirgana table (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33568) which is due for a major reworking.

moltiblock is a user-space plugin to netfilter for blocking lots of nets. No need to recompile kernel or patch other sources.
To install just type make. Then copy the binary to /usr/local/sbin or wherever.
Put one CIDR per line in /etc/moltiblock/cidr.deny, like so:
-- snip --
207.46.0.0/16
207.68.128.0/18
207.68.192.0/20
-- snip --
You can probably put comments in there, anything that doesnt look like CIDR till be ignored.
And then, run the daemon.
An deeeeeen, run something like
iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp --dport 6880:6999 -j QUEUE

Tag Guesser script implements a tag guesser, such as the one found in JuK, for amaroK. Tag Guesser can guess what mp3s tags are based on user supplied formats of the filenames.

This script is not needed for amarok >= 1.4 because the feature is now builtin.

This is the first release, so please send any bug reports or patches to me.

This script probably will work on other versions of software. If you have a patch to make it work on another version, please send it to me.

migratedata 0.1

migratedata 0.1

migratedata project allows you to write a simple XML file to define how to copy data from one database to another. more>>
migratedata project allows you to write a simple XML file to define how to copy data from one database to another, and perform very simple transformations on the way.
Currently, it is immediately able to help you migrate a PostNuke web site to a WordPress one, but to perform any other transformations you will need to create your own XML spec file (which is reasonably simple).
Migrating from PostNuke to WordPress
Download the migratedata tarball from the Download page, and unzip it somewhere.
Copy the file database_details_sample.xml and name it database_details.xml.
Edit the database_details.xml file to contain the hosts, usernames, passwords and database names of your databases.
If you have remote access to the MySQL databases for both your source and your target databases, the process is relatively simple. Open a terminal and cd into the directory containing migratedata.py, and run this command:
./migratedata.py database_details.xml postnuke0.75_to_wordpress2.2.xml
If you dont have remote access to the target database, run this command instead:
./migratedata.py --dump-insert database_details.xml postnuke0.75_to_wordpress2.2.xml > insert.sql
and execute the insert.sql script on the database server of your target database (probably through your hosting providers web interface).
If you cant run queries remotely against your source database either, do this:
./migratedata.py --dump-select database_details.xml postnuke0.75_to_wordpress2.2.xml > select.sql
This will create the file select.sql which you need to run on your source database (probably through your hosting providers web interface). The output of running this query will be some more SQL, which you will need to copy and run on your target database, again probably through your new hosting providers web interface.
Enhancements:
- PostNuke to WordPress migration support was implemented.

Packetflow Firewall Generator 1.0

Packetflow Firewall Generator 1.0

PacketFlow Firewall Generator is an XML based firewall generator. more>>
PacketFlow Firewall Generator is an XML based firewall generator. It takes an XML configuration file that defines the firewall policy and generates a list of iptables commands to implement this policy. It is primarily intended for use on dedicated firewalls, but it can be used in other scenarios. It makes dealing with many interfaces easy.
PacketFlow works on the concept of interface "security levels." New connections are allowed to flow down hill from interfaces with a high security level to interfaces with a low security level. This approach tends to make rule sets much shorter, even with many interfaces.
Access lists allow you to override the default behavior of the security levels. Access lists are defined between interfaces. There is also support for incoming, outgoing, and wildcard access lists. Wildcard access lists allow you to easily allow new connections to a particular service from any interface. Access lists are applied only to "new" connections, and once a connection has been established, you no longer need to deal with it specifically.
The first thing to do is evaluate what you need your firewall to do. This is probably the most important part. Once you know what you are trying to accomplish, study the samples in the samples directory of this distribution. There are many configurations for this software, and one is likely to give you a place to start.
Once you have a configuration, you need to generate the rules from it. This is done by running the packetflow program with the file name as its argument. For now, it sends the rules to STDOUT, so probably want to redirect them into a file.
Enhancements:
- This version no longer uses the unclean match, because it isnt available in kernel 2.6.
- The Debian packages have been updated to work correctly with newer releases, and the version has been updated to 1.0.
