Mandriva Linux 10.2 Limited Edition 2005

Mandriva Linux 10.2 Limited Edition 2005

Mandriva Linux is the operating system of choice for users keen on all things advanced. more>>
Mandriva Linux is the operating system of choice for users keen on all things advanced.
Linux power users will welcome the advanced Web experience, enhanced hardware compatibility and expanded development options brought by Limited Edition 2005, along with significant performance gains. Firefox 1.0.2 offers the most advanced Web browsing experience, with multi-tabbed navigation, pop-up blocking, increased speed, and unmatched security.
Limited Edition also offers the RSS reader Akregator. RSS is a format used to simplify the aggregation and syndication of Web content. RSS feeds contain news and updates from websites and blogs, providing personalized access to information.
Limited Edition 2005 is built to optimize and increase performance. It has been developed with x86-64 technology in mind, which allows for the use of more powerful applications. Support for dual-core technology adds to potential performance, allowing the use of advanced new processors.
Developers and power users running demanding multimedia configurations will appreciate the additional power those features provide. Some special optimizations enhance the overall speed delivered by the system. For instance, KDE 3.3 is 10% faster, thanks to special tuning by Mandriva.
Addressing both the x86 and x86-64 architectures, Limited Edition 2005 is the only Linux system to allow the seamless installation and running of 32-bit applications on 64-bit platforms. This will allow users to benefit from all the power and performance of 64-bit technology while continuing to use vital 32-bit applications.
Developers will welcome the ability to develop 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the same application on the same machine, without the need to use chroot. Finally, Limited Edition allows you to copy the contents of the DVD to the hard disk during installation, removing the need to use the DVD for subsequent software installation, and so saving even more time.
Limited Edition 2005 provides better support for removable devices such as digital cameras, CD-ROM drives and USB keys through immediate detection of devices as they are plugged in, and by allowing you to boot the installation from a USB key.
Also available is DKMS which allows kernel modules to be dynamically built for each kernel on your system in a simplified and organized fashion.
A special feature that will certainly appeal to gamers and enthusiasts is that the new release from Mandriva has support for the Xbox console, empowering users to bridge the divide between gaming and other computer activities.
Additional hardware enhancements include full support for Adaptec Host RAID controllers (RAID, SCSI, SATA) and extended recognition for the most recent flat screen monitors, including widescreen resolutions.

ruby-randbg is a small script to change your computers background wallpaper to a random image in a specified directory.

ruby-randbg project uses a simple cache file to make sure that wallpapers do not repeat. Each time a wallpaper is used, it is added to the cache. Once the cache fills up, it resets, and the wallpapers start over.

TODO:

Create the .randbg file automagically.
Add multiple directory support if requested.

CTWM Themes System 0.2

CTWM Themes System 0.2

CTWM Themes System is a set of CTWM configuration files and shell scripts. more>>
CTWM Themes System in short CTS is a set of CTWM configuration files and shell scripts that adds basic themes-like capabilities to your ctwm window manager.
CTS caracteristics:
- themes are split into look themes and feel themes. Look themes change colors and visual aspect of the window manager, and feel themes change the way you move or place windows, open the menus, etc.
- automatically generated menus allows you to switch look or feel themes. Your choice is saved for your future X sessions.
- you can change the background image used with the current look theme using a menu generated from the images stored in the Backgrounds directory.
- adding a new theme is as easy as unpacking it in the Themes-Look or Themes-Feel directory and restarting ctwm.
How does it work ?
The CTS package provides a .ctwm directory you must place in your home directory.
This directory provides a ctwmrc file that will include other configuration files from the include directory and from the themes directories. Using the m4 preprocessor, the configuration files will read the Themes-Look and Themes-Feel directories and the Backgrounds directory and generate menus allowing you to switch themes and background images.
When you choose a theme in the menus, CTWM calls the "settheme" script that simply change the $HOME/.ctwm/Themes-*/Current link to the new selected theme directory.
The wallpapers are switched using the "setbg" script that change the root windows wallpaper, and place a link to the image in the directory of the current look theme.
The script supports multiple screens, so if you have multiple screens, using the menu will change the wallpaper of the current screen.
Enhancements:
- This version provides many minor enhancements, file name changes, and better themes, but above all, themes are now split into two kinds: "look themes" that change the visual aspects of the window manager, and "feel themes" that change the key bindings, the way windows are raised, etc.
- That way, you can change the colors of the windows while keeping your preferred focus and window raise methods.

KmPg2 MPEG2 Encoder 1.96

KmPg2 MPEG2 Encoder 1.96

KmPg2 is a user friendly MPEG2 encoding wizard that allows the user to create high quality DVD compatible MPEG2 streams. more>>
KmPg2 is a very simple to use MPEG2 encoding wizard that allows the user to create high quality DVD compatible MPEG2 streams, without requiring any technical knowledge.
Creating high quality MPEG2 streams involves a lot more than simply feeding the input video to mpeg2enc/transcode/mencoder/etc.
The input video needs to be carefully prepared by pulling it through a chain of stream processing tools like low-pass filters, color correction filters, static and dynamic chroma and luma noise filters, scalers, and so on.
This processing chain needs to be tuned in such a way that all irrelevant data (like noise) is removed before the video enters the encoder. KmPg2 uses the video processing / encoding tools from the MJPEGTools project to achieve this.
KmPg2 features a profiler that enables the user to interactively create custom pre-processing pipelines that are optimised for a specific type of video material. These preprocessing pipelines (profiles) can be stored and used with the actual encoding wizard.
For example, you could create a profile that is designed especially for restoring a single aging VHS tape, or you could create a profile tuned for your digital camcorder and re-use it for every new recording that needs to be encoded.
At this moment KmPg2 accepts only one format of input video: Raw Sony DV video streams. This is the video format that most people use nowadays for high quality video processing and editing. Support for using AVI files for input is expected in future versions.
Main features:
- Produces DVD compliant MPEG2 streams
- Seperate chroma/luma noise filtering
- Low-Pass filtering support
- Contrast/Brightness/Saturation correction
- White balance correction
- Special black-and-white mode
- Crop image to Widescreen (16:9) or Panavision (2.35:1)
- Output conforms to Rec.601 specifications
- Both constant bitrate and variable bitrate encoding
- Unsharp masking
- Supports progressive and interlaced source material
- Support for removing overscan area
- Provides feedback to user about average/peak bitrates
- Show output on screen while encoding
- Generate encoding shell scripts
- Generate quick preview-encodings of parts of source video
