hbuild53 Feb112005

hbuild53 Feb112005

hbuild53 is an automated post-build for FreeBSD 5 servers. more>>
hbuild53 (hastek build for FreeBSD 5.3 onward) is a script package to help build FreeBSD base systems. It makes sense if you have multiple systems to build.

hbuild53 will work on FreeBSD 4.x - however the base kernel configuration file will not - as of 5.2.1 the base kernel configuration file is too different.

hbuild53 provides automation for some of the things you might typically do after a base FreeBSD installation. This is relatively simple stuff but has saved me time when building/rebuilding/upgrading multiple systems.

This idea will probably make sense to those who build multiple machines, and will not make sense if you work with one or two systems only..

This package is intended to help start a server build (not to be installed over existing systems, though it probably wont hurt anything to do so), assuming you will be building
other applications later as you build your final platform.

This package is specific to FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE onward. It will upgrade your ports tree, install ports, create some customizations, and provide some sysadmin packages, such as log archivers, a chrooted BIND builder, a heirarchichal unix platform backup system, shows how to set up serial console, a new kernel, and ipf for packet filtering.

Each hbuild subdirectory has bits you might be able to adapt into your own system administration.

You will need a reasonably fast internet connection for the ports. Why install ports rather than packages? You dont have to, but I always thought its better to build the software on the particular system, although it takes longer.

Beehive 0.6.0

Beehive 0.6.0

Beehive Linux is a distribution made by system administrators, for system administrors. more>>
Beehive Linux is a distribution made by system administrators, for system administrors.
Its intent is to provide fast and clean setup of workhorse servers and workstations.
Not for the inexperienced, Beehive includes native Reiserfs support.
Enhancements:
- Mostly a lot of updates, check the 0.6.0/allfiles.lst for specifics. Seems noticeably faster than 0.5.0 for some reason.
- Gnome was removed because, well, nobody wanted to hassle with it. Its a major PITA to build, and It doesnt really add anything that KDE doesnt, so....

libview 0.5.6

libview 0.5.6

libview is VMwares Incredibly Exciting Widgets, a collection of GTK+ widgets used within VMware products. more>>
libview library is a collection of widgets under the MIT license that we developed at VMware while working on Workstation 5. We felt they were general purpose enough to have value to the community. We have benefitted a lot from open source, and felt it was time to make a genuine effort to give back.
Our intention is for the libview SourceForge project to be the one place where these widgets will be developed and maintained. We will not be developing them in-house and pushing them out to the CVS repository. What you see on SourceForge CVS is what were using at VMware. We will be adding more widgets over time to libview as we write them.
Most of the widgets are written in C++ for gtkmm. While this does limit the usefulness to many projects, the projects are free to rewrite them in C and use them.
libview 0.5.1 has been released. This version includes two new widgets, the DeadEntry (a Gtk::Entry that is greyed out when no longer editable) and UndoableTextView (a Gtk::TextView with built-in undo/redo support).
There were some additional bug fixes, and a few test programs have been added.
Enhancements:
- An annoying yet amusing bug in view::FieldEntry was just discovered and fixed.
- Depending on the delimiter used in fields, certain keys may were not allowed to be inputted.
- In the case of our test, where "-" was used as a field delimiter, the character "6" wasnt considered a valid character.

KANOTIX 64 2005-04 LITE Final

KANOTIX 64 2005-04 LITE Final

KANOTIX 64 is a Linux live CD based on Knoppix technology using Debian/sid for 64-bit architecture. more>>
KANOTIX 64 is a Linux live CD based on Knoppix technology using Debian/sid for 64-bit architecture.

The included XFree86 is from Debian/experimental. The main specs are: GRUB based startup from CD, ACPI support, DMA default on, additional support for DSL modems (Fritz!Card DSL and Eagle USB), optimal for HD install (you get a working Debian/sid install in about 10 minutes!), kernel forcedeth (for nForce NIC), device mapper and some other patches.

Simply boot from CD and enjoy Linux. Some tools may request a root password. As none is set, you have to set one using "sudo passwd" or use "su" in konsole.

Whenever you execute something with root permissions, you should know what you are doing! For web surfing over LAN no root access is required. I am sure you can discover many things to do with it :)

Dont try to write to NTFS partitions using the standard NTFS driver included with the kernel, as its support for writing is very lacking - thus it could destroy the partition and the data in it.

There is a new Captive NTFS driver that does a better job at writing to NTFS, so use it instead. For FAT partitions you can enable write-access with the context menu (right mouse button).

You may not have the rights to modify Linux partitions, use the root mode in konsole if needed. Some links are not working in the menu - that is not my fault - the packages from Debian/sid are very new and may have some little bugs, but you can always use new releases.

Program Guard 0.7.0

Program Guard 0.7.0

Program Guard allows the user of a Linux workstation to specify which application programs that are allowed TCP/IP connections. more>>
Program Guard allows the user of a Linux workstation to specify which application programs that are allowed TCP/IP connections to the Internet (Internet addresses are defined as any IP address not in the range of 10.0.0.0/24 or 192.168.0.0/16).

The application program names can be specified by listing them in a file (Static Mode) by querying the user (Query Mode). In Query Mode, when a program that is unknown to Program Guard attempts to access an Internet IP address, Program Guard displays the Program Guard Dialog Box.

In addition to providing connection information, this dialog box gives the workstation user the option of allowing the program to access the Internet or to be blocked from accessing the Internet. This can be done either for the current instance of the program or for this and all future instances of the program (Make Persistent checkbox).

Currently, the program names that are allowed or denied Internet access apply to all users of the workstation rather than on a per user basis. For example, if Program Guard is running in Query Mode and user A invokes a program previously blocked from Internet access by user B, the program will be blocked from Internet access for User A as well.

Connections blocked by Program Guard are logged to the Program Guard log file pgrd.log. It is located in the /var/log/pgrd directory. If desired, Program Guard can be configured to log all Internet connection attempts rather than just those that have been blocked.

Program Guard was tested on Fedora Core 1 and Fedora Core 3 on single processor 32 bit X86 Intel processors. It has not been tested on other distributions or on multi-processor machines. While it works on Fedora Core 1, it will not build on a standard Linux 2.4.x kernel due to task_struct definitions that were not made until Linux 2.6. If there is enough interest, a version that runs under a standard Linux 2.4 kernel may be made available.

To run in Query Mode, Gnome 2.x and Glade 2.x are required. There are no prerequisites for Static Mode.

Installation:

Program Guard consists of three components: a kernel module; a daemon; and a Gnome GUI user interface component. All files needed to build the components are in the pgrd.tgz file. An installation shell script install-pgrd is provided for Fedora distributions.

It will build/install (or remove) the kernel module and daemon as well as configure them to be started automatically when the system is booted. To invoke it, type install-pgrd < install | remove >. This script may or may not be useable as is for other Linux distributions.

If you modify the install script, please note that the module, daemon and various support files must be installed in the /opt/pgrd directory for Program Guard to work properly (this is already handled when using the install script as provided). To run in Query Mode, each user must be configured by invoking the install-pgrd_user < username > script. And by going to the Preferences->More Preferences->Sessions selection in the Fedora Main Menu and adding pgrdgui to the Startup Programs tab.

Program Guard will be started the next time the machine is rebooted. If you do not wish to reboot, you may start Program Guard manually as described below in Manual Starting And Stopping. Note: If starting manually and using Query Mode, once the daemon and kernel module are started, make sure that you log out and log back in.

Magnificent Gunbright Final

Magnificent Gunbright Final

Magnificent Gunbright is an abstract shooter; destroy the black ball. more>>
Magnificent Gunbright is an abstract shooter; destroy the black ball. An Abstract Shooter Developed For Ludum Dare in 48 Hours.

You are the flashy white blob at the bottom, with the clump of other white blobs following you around.

You have the ability to fire the blobs from your cloud at the flashy blob surrounded by a cloud of black blobs at the top of the screen.

If a black blob and white blob collide, both are destroyed. The object is to hit the evil flashy blob at the top of the screen to destroy it.

Falling from the top of the screen like rain is a steady supply of more blobs. If one of the blobs in your cloud touches a white blob that fell from the sky, even while shooting, the blob joins your cluster.

Falling from the bottom of the screen is black blobs, that your enemy can use to bulk himself up, as well. Blob rain does no damage to either party; you can tell that its rain and not bullets because rain travels away from you.

Use the arrow keys to move, and the space bar to shoot.

Once youve destroyed one evil black blob, you will face another, more powerful one! And so on forever until you eventually die.

Destroy the evil black blobs and save the League of Confederated Planets!

pyhtmloo is a library that allows python developers to use HTML code like any other python objects. more>>
pyhtmloo is a library that allows python developers to use HTML code like any other python objects. My final goal of this work is to have a library of HTML widgets. This will allow us to no re-invent the wheel when we build HTML pages.
An another interesting aspect of pyhtmloo is to split the work between web page desingers and python developers. This is an another idea of split between web layout and web content.
In the same area you can also look at HTMLGen and pyweb.
Main features:
- any HTML tag is a python object
- pyhtmloo objects can be inherited to have additional methods (for example addrow for Table obect).
- simple widgets are available.
Installation:
Simply untar the the tar file and execute setup.py.
You can test the code with given widgets.
Enhancements:
- Several bugfixes and new features were implemented.
- A bug in textarea was fixed. .addrow was added to table. .render(), .setattr(), .getattr(), .setparams(), and .getparams() were added.
- Generated HTML is now XHTML compliant.
