Running Unix Memory Test 0.2

Running Unix Memory Test 0.2

Running Unix Memory Test is a tool to check the memory without interrupting the service. more>>
The goal of RUMT is to check the memory of a computer over a long period of time and almost-real load conditions without having to interrupt the services.

RUMT exploits the possibility of some Unix kernels to selectivly disable some memory areas while still accessing them through the /dev/mem device. The principle of RUMT is to write pseudo-random data in these disabled memory areas, and later check them. This principle and the original code for the deterministic pseudo-random generator are from David Madore.

This distribution contains another variant on the same theme: URUMT allocates a large chunk of memory, locks it in memory using the mlock(2) system call, and scans /dev/mem to find where in physical memory the allocated area is. Then it continuously runs the same tests in that memory.

URUMT can not be used to test a particular area of memory: the kernel will give it whatever physical memory it feels like. But URUMT can be restarted now and then, hopefully getting different physical memory each time.

This is perfect if you suspect you have bad bits, but do not know at all where they are. Once you have sighted the bad bits, you can use a plain RUMT to test more extensively the neighborhood.

The UNIX Man Slak Paks 0.5

The UNIX Man Slak Paks 0.5

The UNIX Man Slak Paks is a Slackware package creation framework. more>>
This is a collection of scripts which is used to manage the creation of Slackware packages. This framework is designed to make it easy to add packages to the collection and to easily tweak package parameters for testing and deployment.
The framework currently has a lot of parameters, and also has basic frameworks for CPAN packages. It is possible to add more frameworks and tweaks for other package networks as well, such as the PHP and Python archives, and these are in the works currently.
Enhancements:
- This marks the start of the new style of build scripts. These are much more modular, and have a consistent set of shell functions and variables which work in their defaults for most situations, and can be redefined by a package file to do special setup or other functions
- which some packages may require.

X-Files is a graphical file management program. more>>
X-Files is a graphical file management program for Unix/X-Window environment. It was inspired by the Amiga program DirWork.

This application differs slightly from the main stream file managers in that it has always only one window. On top (or bottom) of the window you have ActionbuttonsTM -area. Other main areas are the two directory listings for file related actions. You can use quick pop-up menu for basic operations. File extensions can be configured to launch any program you desire for that file.
The appearance and functionality can be fully configured according to your taste using the built-in editors.

Tested on: Intel Linux, DEC Alpha, SGI, HP-UX, Solaris
(Should work on any Unix-machine running Tcl/Tk.)

KMameleon 1.0pl2

KMameleon 1.0pl2

KMameleon is a slick and easy to use KDE XMame. more>>
KMameleon is a slick and easy to use KDE XMame. An UNIX/Linux/*BSD version of MAME, Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator wrapper.

It supports a vast section of options provided by the emulator, and it supports X11, SDL and XGL versions of it.

KMameleon is not really "just another XMame wrapper". It has really simple interface for game selection with a really powerful backend, which it makes it user-friendly for anyone. For newbies there can be just a couple of clickable options, which are stated "fullscreen" for the mode and "rompath" in "paths" module.

As in the very same time you have whole lots of options for the advanced user and (new in KMameleon 1.0) a module to write your own switches in, so if there are some new switches, or you feel better to keep all "under control", you can use that.

Actually... I havent seen any other _good_ XMame wrappers for KDE. There are 2, that I can name at this very moment: KMameRun (last release for KDE 1.1) and QtMAME, which is not that bad, but 1) natively is written in Spanish and 2) paths are fixed, and it doesnt honour the $HOME directory, and its written purely in Qt.

Thats not bad, but as KMameleon is natively written for KDE, it uses some of the KDEs nifty gadgets, like DCOP for having unique application and lots more.

Amiga Research Operating System 20060207

Amiga Research Operating System 20060207

Amiga Research Operating System (AROS) is a portable and free desktop operating system. more>>
Amiga Research Operating System (AROS) is a portable and free desktop operating system aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS 3.1, while improving on it in many areas. The source code is available under an open source license, which allows anyone to freely improve upon it.

Goals

The goals of the AROS project is it to create an OS which:

1. Is as compatible as possible with AmigaOS 3.1.
2. Can be ported to different kinds of hardware architectures and processors, such as x86, PowerPC, Alpha, Sparc, HPPA and other.
3. Should be binary compatible on Amiga and source compatible on any other hardware.
4. Can run as a standalone version which boots directly from hard disk and as an emulation which opens a window on an existing OS to develop software and run Amiga and native applications at the same time.
5. Improves upon the functionality of AmigaOS.

To reach this goal, we use a number of techniques. First of all, we make heavy use of the Internet. You can participate in our project even if you can write only one single OS function. The most current version of the source is accessible 24 hours per day and patches can be merged into it at any time. A small database with open tasks makes sure work is not duplicated.

History

Some time back in the year 1993, the situation for the Amiga looked somewhat worse than usual and some Amiga fans got together and discussed what should be done to increase the acceptance of our beloved machine. Immediately the main reason for the missing success of the Amiga became clear: it was propagation, or rather the lack thereof. The Amiga should get a more widespread basis to make it more attractive for everyone to use and to develop for. So plans were made to reach this goal. One of the plans was to fix the bugs of the AmigaOS, another was to make it an modern operating system. The AOS project was born.

But exactly what was a bug? And how should the bugs be fixed? What are the features a so-called modern OS must have? And how should they be implemented into the AmigaOS?

Two years later, people were still arguing about this and not even one line of code had been written (or at least no one had ever seen that code). Discussions were still of the pattern where someone stated that "we must have ..." and someone answered "read the old mails" or "this is impossible to do, because ..." which was shortly followed by "youre wrong because ..." and so on.

In the winter of 1995, Aaron Digulla got fed up with this situation and posted an RFC (request for comments) to the AOS mailing list in which I asked what the minimal common ground might be. Several options were given and the conclusion was that almost everyone would like to see an open OS which is compatible to AmigaOS 3.1 (kickstart 40.68) on which further discussions could be based upon to see what is possible and what is not.

So the work began and AROS was born.

Building and installation (*):
for build using GNU C (GCC - unix, mingw/cygwin - Win32, DJGPP - DOS(**)),
type gmake. static and shared libraries will appear in "./lib".
also you may do "gmake static" for building only static library,
or "gmake shared" for only shared library.
after successful build, issue "gmake install" as superuser.
default install prefix is /usr/local, which can be changed in Makefile.
*)
support for non-GNU build methods isnt included at the moment,
feel free to contribute :)
**)
when building with DJGPP, use "gmake static" -- DOS doesnt support
shared libraries
Usage:
include < z80ex.h > in your sources,
and link with "libz80ex" (-lz80ex).
no API documentation written yet, see comments in "z80ex.h".
