dis6502 is a flow-tracing 6502 disassembler. more>>
dis6502 is a flow-tracing disassembler for the 6502, originally written by Robert Bond and supporting Atari binary files. Robert posted dis6502 to the Usenet newsgroup net.sources on 9-Oct-1986, and to comp.sources.unix 7-Jun-1988.

Udi Finkelstein ported dis6502 to the Amiga, added support for Commodore 64 object files, and posted it to comp.sources.amiga on 4-Nov-1988.

This version of dis6502 has been modified in several ways:

* Can read raw binary files.

* Option to specify alternate reset and interrupt vector addresses.

* Line numbers are no longer necessary with equates in definition files.

* If a data reference is made to an address that does not have an
assigned name, but address-1 does, the reference will be disassembled
as name+1. This is convenient for two-byte variables, particularly in
zero page.

* New definition file directives:

< name > .equ < addr > same as .eq

.jtab2 < addr >,< addr >,< count > table of code pointers, split into high and low byte tables
.rtstab < addr >,< addr >,< count > like jtab2, but each entry contains the target address
minus one, for use with RTS

* Rather than using recursive calls to trace every instruction, there is now a trace queue.

* Added a "-7" option to mask off MSB of character data.

* Updated to use ANSI C function prototypes and include files.

* Amiga/Manx changes have been removed.

dis6502 has been tested on Red Hat Linux 9, but should work on other Linux, BSD, and Unix systems.

dis6502 is distributed under the terms of the Free Software Foundations General Public License, Version 2. See the file COPYING for details.

The original release notes from Robert Bond and Udi Finkelstein are in the files README.Bond and README.Finkelstein.

ImageBackup 1.8

ImageBackup 1.8

ImageBackup creates incremental backup CDs of digital pictures. more>>
This is a small Perl script to create backup CDs out of images. I like to organize my digital pictures into a directory structure based on image content and subject. I dont store them by date. This makes it nice to find pictures, but difficult to back them up without using traditional incremental backup software and/or backing up some images more than once.

Although this program is made to work well with AutoScrapbook, it can work with any directory of images. You run the program and specify a base directory. The directory is processed recursively and any images are mirrored into a staging area.

Once enough images are in the staging area, the program will (optionall) run AutoScrapbook to create a set of web pages specifically for that disc of images. It will then create an ISO image that you can burn to CD when convenient. This script is made to work on Linux, but could work on other systems with a bit of modification.

Once a disc has been created, the list of images that were on that disc is stored in a hidden data file in the base directory specified. You can then run ImageBackup on that directory again. Any images not included in any previous backups will be mirrored to the (now empty) staging directory.

If the directory fills, another ISO will be generated. If not, the staging directory will remain partially-filled. You can then run ImageBackup regularly (i.e. from cron even) and new images will be added to the staging directory as they are found. Whenever the disc is full enough, an ISO is generated, and the whole process starts over.
Installation/Use

To use the program, simply download the program below and place it somewhere on your system. If your Perl interpreter is not in /usr/bin/perl, you will have to edit the first line of the file.

Edit the program and change any of the variables near the top that need to be changed.

Then, simply run the program with a directory name as a parameter. You should always enter the same base directory name for good results. If, for example, you run ImageBackup on ~/pictures and created a backup CD, you should always run it on the same directory from then on.

Automatic Runs

You can have this script run automatically -- say once per week. Just run this script from cron (on Red Hat Linux, for example, just place this in /etc/cron.weekly):

#!/bin/bash

email="kirk@kaybee.org"
image_backup="/home/kirk/projects/misc/image_backup.pl"
DIRS="/export/share/pictures"
TEMPDIR="/home/kirk/tmp"

mkdir -p "$TEMPDIR"

for dir in $DIRS ; do
echo "Processing directory $dir"
echo
iso=`$image_backup $dir 2> "$TEMPDIR/image_backup.errors" | grep ^ISO Image Ready:`
if [ $? == 0 ] ; then
echo "$iso"
mail -s "$iso" $email < /dev/null
exit 0
elif [ $? == -1 ] ; then
echo "Not enough images yet..."
exit -1
else
echo "ERROR running image backup!" >&2
mail -s Image backup errors! $email < "$TEMPDIR/image_backup.errors"
exit 1
fi
done

Now you will receive an email whenever a new ISO image is available or if there are any errors.

Note that if you configure ImageBackup to use AutoScrapbook to create an index on the backup CDs, you must have already run AutoScrapbook on the source directories if you are running ImageBackup non-interactively.

If you havent, then picture descriptions will be requested during the cron job, which wont work too well.

Plan-B Linux 1.0

Plan-B Linux 1.0

Plan-B is a bootable Linux environment without the need for a hard drive. more>>
Plan-B is a bootable Linux environment without the need for a hard drive, it runs entirely in ram or from the cd, based on a basic, stripped installation of Red Hat Linux and the fundamental workings of the SuperRescue CD. A list of tools and utilities are also included for projects such as:

* Forensics/Data Recovery
* System/Network Analysis and Security Scanning
* Temporary Network Device/Server
* IDS / NIDS System
* Network Status Report Creation

My reason for its creation came about due to finding other similar projects (SuperRescue CD, Biatchux (F.I.R.E.), Trinux, Knoppix) to be geared toward only a single area of the broad spectrum I was looking for. The first of which (by H. Peter Anvin, the author of Syslinux, Isolinux, and zisofs) was the only one close to the concept I had in mind which is why I chose it as the foundation for this cd. After not finding what I was really looking for, the "All-in-One", I decided the only way to get it was to build one myself.

X/OS Linux 4.0

X/OS Linux 4.0

X/OS Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution for business and enterprise users. more>>
X/OS Linux is derived from the Free/Open Source rpm packages of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) under the requirements set forth by their trademark policy.

X/OS has spent considerable effort to avoid using Red Hats trademarks in any way that would imply an association with or sponsorship by Red Hat.

After some delay, the final release of X/OS Linux 4.0 is now available to the public.

The X/OS Linux team has spent considerable effort to assure the label enterprise-grade Linux for this milestone release. With the simultaneous availability of X/OS Linux 4.0 for x86 and x86_64 processor architectures, it delivers the latest “best-of-breed” Free and Open Source software for both 32- and 64-bit platforms.

Highlights include the 2.6 Linux kernel featuring numerous enhancements over the previous 2.4 version, Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) to apply more granular security policies, improved storage capabilities supporting file systems of up to 8TB and more.

The Global File System (GFS) and Cluster Suite software is included in this release to ease the task of creating and managing advanced cluster configurations, and is available as an extra option during installation. This powerful set of tools provides seamless scalability of applications such as databases, web servers and high-performance computing clusters — with GFS enabling nodes to simultaneously read and write to a single shared filesystem.

Next to providing an advanced server platform, X/OS Linux 4.0 adds various enhancements to the desktop — increasing usability with greatly improved office productivity tools, plug-and-play USB device recognition and power management supporting the ACPI standard.

In addition to compatibility with the de facto distribution for deploying Linux in the enterprise, X/OS Linux strides to include various other useful packages and tools that conform to the standard for mature and robust “enterprise-grade” software. One example is Xfce, an extra option in addition to Gnome and KDE, offering a light-weight desktop environment suited for use on low-end or thin client systems.

liblogging 0.6.0

liblogging 0.6.0

Liblogging is an easy-to-use, cross-platform library for RFC 3195-style logging. more>>
Liblogging is an easy-to-use, cross-platform library for RFC 3195-style logging. It has a very simple API which takes out all complexity of the new BEEP-based RFC 3195 syslog standard. It supports RAW and COOKED profiles as well as initiators and listeners.
Liblogging takes a different approach. It is a library specifcally created to talk syslog, NOT general BEEP. It provides just the bare functionality needed for syslog, nothing else.
Consequently it is very slim. The authors hope that this will enable developers of even low-powered devices to adopt the library and provide reliable syslog logging.
This library has been named liblogging because it may eventually contain code for additional logging methods in the future (like "plain" UDP syslog, 3195 COOKED and syslog-sign).
This library compiles under a variety of platforms. It is originally developed and maintened under Win32. It is frequently ported and tested on Red Hat Linux.
These are the platforms (in this order) we have the most confidience in the library on. Others may (though unlikely) show unexpected behaviour.
This documentation file here is NOT up to date. However, it will provide you a good overview of the overall design and many specifics. To get the totally right details, please see the respective modules documentation.
Please note that the SEQ handling described below for the listener part is NOT YET implemented - but it is still on the list. As such, the server API should be considered unstable.
If you base a server on liblogging, please be prepared to update your server to make it work with future versions of liblogging. Of course we try to keep the impact as low as possible, but thats not a guarantee!
The client side API is stable and changes should not be necessary for future releases (except, of course, you would like to use new features).
Design Goals:
The overall mission of liblogging is to provide a small, easy to use library that will work as an enabler for reliable syslog.
There are a number of design goals:
- self-contained
No additional libraries shall be needed
- low ressource consumption
Memory and CPU usage should be kept to a minimum so that the lib can also be used on low-powered devices
- thread-model agnostic
No specific threading model is needed for this library. Everything can be done from a single thread, BUT the library is thread-safe so that it can be called from multiple threads concurrently.
- extensible
Even though the initial design includes a very limited feature set, liblogging should be able to be extended easily.
- portability
Thats a hard one. liblogging is developed under Win32. While we take reasonable care to make it portable, we only know this once ports have actually been done.
Version restrictions:
- tuning profiles are not supported
- only 2 channels (channel 0 and 1 syslog channel) are supported
- at this time, only the RAW profile is supported
The file architecture.c does NOT contain any code - it is solely used to provide this documentation.

Vacation 1.1.8

Vacation 1.1.8

Vacation is a mail auto-responder (for when you are on vacation and such), written in Perl. more>>
Vacation is a mail auto-responder (for when you are on vacation and such), written in Perl.
Vacation is loosely based on the vacation program by Larry Wall and Tom Christiansen.
I decided to write a new vacation clone since I could not find a version that would work reliably under Red Hat Linux 6.0. I finally found the old Perl version by Larry Wall and Tom Christiansen -- it was the most full-featured, and it almost worked. So, I decided to rewrite it. You may find the original version as "vacation.orig" in this distribution.
Since then, several others have released similar implementations and updates to vacation. While there is no longer a gap to fill, this version still provides a few unique features, flexibility, and portability.
You may also find a simpler auto-responder script in this distribution called mail-responder.pl. This precursor to vacation may be more appropriate at the system level (e.g., called from the aliases file) as compared to vacation which is designed for individual users.
Enhancements:
- Added a Vacation tag to From: addresses
- Added a routine to properly generate date headers (long overdue!) Thanks to Milivoj Ivkovic for the example
- Added a flag to only respond to specified senders Thanks to Jeff Chan for the feature request
- Improved parsing of From: addresses Thanks to Mark Haidl
- Added $RECIPIENT and $SENDER tokens Thanks to Wayne Fathers for the feature request

Openwall GNU/*/Linux 2.0

Openwall GNU/*/Linux 2.0

Openwall GNU/*/Linux is a security-enhanced operating system with Linux and GNU software as its core. more>>
Openwall GNU/*/Linux (or Owl for short) is a security-enhanced operating system with Linux and GNU software as its core, compatible with other major distributions of GNU/*/Linux. Openwall GNU/*/Linux is intended as a server platform. And, of course, it is free.
Main features:
- While we value quality above feature set, Owl does indeed offer a number of features besides just trying to be more secure.
- Most obviously, Owl can be used as a base for installing whatever software is generally available for GNU/*/Linux systems. It offers some compatibility (read below) for software packages found in or developed for other major Linux distributions, such as Red Hat Linux.
- Additionally, being a server platform, Owl will include a growing set of integrated Internet services.
- Owl includes a complete build environment capable to re-build the entire system from source with one simple command ("make buildworld"). (This is explained in more detail below.)
- Owl supports multiple architectures (currently x86, SPARC, and Alpha), as this lets you use it in more cases and helps us catch certain classes of software bugs earlier, thus improving the reliability of Owl packages.
Security:
- Owl combines several approaches to reduce the number and/or impact of flaws in its software components and impact of flaws in third-party software that one might install on the system.
- The primary approach used is proactive source code review for several classes of software vulnerabilities. However, because of the large amount of code, theres a certain level of "importance" for a software component or a part thereof to be audited. - Currently, only pieces of code which are typically run with privileges greater than those of a regular user and/or typically process data obtained over a network are audited before the corresponding software component is included. This covers relevant code paths in many of the system libraries, all SUID/ SGID programs, all daemons and network services. Other software may be audited when it is already a part of Owl. Potential problems found during the audit are fixed or, in some pathological cases, may prevent the software component from being included. In general, code quality and privilege management are always considered when theres a choice between implementations of a feature. As the project evolves, many of the software components will be replaced with ones of our own.
- When packaged for Owl, the software components are configured or, when necessary, modified in order to provide safe defaults, apply the least privilege principle, and introduce privilege separation. The use of safe defaults, where optional and potentially dangerous features need to be turned on explicitly, lets us audit the pieces of code used in in the default configuration in a more thorough way. Extra systems administration facilities ("owl-control") are provided for managing system features such as the optional SUID/SGID binaries independently from installing the corresponding packages. Every Owl package will have its audit status documented to allow for risk assessment.
- While source code review is the preferred way to deal with software vulnerabilities, it cant be applied in all cases. Typically, when insecure third-party software is installed on an otherwise secure system, "the game" is lost. The only thing an operating system can guarantee is that potential unauthorized access would be limited to those privileges granted to the software in question. However, in the recent years, a number of approaches were developed which reduce the likelihood and/or may reduce the impact of successful real-world attacks on insecure third-party software. Owl will use some of those "hardening" approaches in various parts of the system.
- Owl uses "strong" cryptography within its core components, and already includes some security policy enforcement (proactive password checking with "pam_passwdqc", password and account expiration, network address- based access control) and integrity checking ("mtree") capabilities. It is one of our goals to provide a wide range of security tools with Owl, available for use "out of the box".
Enhancements:
- After many Owl-current snapshots, Owl 2.0 release is finally out.
- Owl 2.0 is built around Linux kernel 2.4.32-ow1, glibc 2.3.6 (with our security enhancements), GCC 3.4.5, and recent versions of over 100 other packages.
- It offers binary- and package-level compatibility for most packages intended for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) and Fedora Core 3 (FC3), as well as for many FC4 packages.
- Additionally, Owl 2.0 uses our new installer, making installation a lot easier than it used to be for Owl 1.1 and below.
