JVending 1.3.10a
JVending is a P2P (JXTA) based mobile content provisioning system. more>>
JVending project bridges P2P networks and wireless delivery of content to mobile devices. Due to high latency of wireless connections, it is not practical to directly hook up the mobile devices to the peer network, so I have taken a different approach with JVending.
A user sets up a personal provisioning server on their PC and hooks it into the network. Through the P2P network, we create a federation of provisioning servers. The mobile devices use the federated provisioning servers as content portals.
JVending differs from P2P systems, such as Gnutella or "Project JXTA" reference implementation, in the following ways. JVending provides:
1. Catalog management
2. Device detection, which delivers the appropriate content based upon the type of browser or device
3. Web based browsing of content, so you can share with your friends on a wired or wireless network, after you have already collected the content.
4. The ability to search for and distribute packaged archives on the peer network.
5. Web links tying together the network.
6. PPG integration for pushing content to mobile devices.
For 2005 - 2006, the major goals of JVending (roughly in order of importance) are:
1. Expanding P2P support, including more in the area of wireless messaging (SMS)
2. JSR-124 compliance
3. Performance testing and monitoring capability
4. Multimedia server and J2ME support. This covers full integration between the MMS Client and the provisioning server.
Setting up the Environment
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you have J2SE 1.4.2 JDK installed. If not, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and download and install the JDK (not JRE). I have not tested with J2SE 1.5 JDK, so it may or may not work with that version.
2. Download the jvending-standalone.zip file from the JVending project site.
3. Unzip the file into a directory of your choice, say /jvending
4. Set the JAVA_HOME environmental variable, depending on your OS. In windows, you can do this through the Control Panel/System/Advanced/Environmental Variable: JAVA_HOME =
EXAMPLE: JAVA_HOME=c:Programsj2sdk1.4.2_06
Starting JVending
1. Go to the bin directory and click on the run.bat (for windows) or run.sh for Unix.
2. The first time you start JVending, you will see a JXTA Configurator screen show up. Type in your user name and password/verify password. Click OK.
3. Wait 10 seconds for JVending to finish its startup sequence and then go to http://localhost:80/jvending/login. If you get a 404 error, wait a few more seconds and try again. Login ID/Password: admin/admin. Click "Submit Query" button. You will now see the JVending home page.

EarCandy 0.1.1
EarCandy is a music jukebox. more>>
EarCandy is a music juke-box that presents music collections in the somewhat novel way of artist, album, title regardless of the underlying directory structure.
This is the way that iNoize, a p2p music sharing company, presented music. I worked at iNoize for 18 months and really liked the approach, unfortunately, I do not like web based juke boxes ;-) (I think web uis are too limiting for the user and the developer).
EarCandy is written in Python using (currently) the Gtk toolkit for the user interface. I will eventually switch to AnyGui for the ui once they release a stable version.
EarCandy uses an external player to play tracks. Under Unix/Linux the only player currently supported is xmms. It needs to be running in order to play music, ie EarCandy will no start it for you. And under Windows, winamp is supported.
The main script to run is earcandy.py, cd into the directory and ./earcandy.py to run the application. Windows users, just run earcandy.exe.
The first time it runs, it will ask for the path to youre music files. Enter the path and click on OK. It will then scan that path for mp3 files and add them to an index. It saves the index file, so it only has to this once. You will be able to rescan the directory if you add new tracks to rebuild the index.
The main window consists of 4 list boxes. In order:
* Collections Eventually you will be able to add external collections and reference the music within. They are listed here.
* Artists is the list of all artists in the collection.
* Albums is the list of albums for the selected artist.
* Tracks is the list of tracks for the selected album.
To play an album or track, simple double click on it. There is also a context menu when the right mouse button is pressed on a album or track. For albums, this menu contains items to play the album and enqueue the album. It is similar for tracks.
Enqueing allows a album or track to be added to the list of songs being played in the music player without disturbing what is being played.

Magic Mirror Backup 1.0 beta2
Magic Mirror Backup works by copying the files and folders on your computer to other computers within your office. more>>
Magic Mirror Backup works by copying the files and folders on your computer to other computers within your office. In exchange, these other computers also copy their own files onto your computer.
This sharing of backups has quite a few advantages not the least of which are that it is extremely convenient and cost effective. (This symbiotic mechanism for backing up data is often called peer to peer backup or p2p backup.)
There is also an optional off-site component so that you can additionally backup to a remote server to protect against office-wide failures like fire, theft, or hurricanes.
Main features:
- It works with your existing hardware requiring no new hardware investment and providing greater value for your existing investment.
- It will work in conjunction with your existing backup strategy. If you make regular backups to external media, thats great. Use Magic Mirror Backup to add daily backup protection to your critical or frequently changing data.
- It is automatic - you do not need to worry about swapping tapes, Zip Disks, or CD-Rs.
Here are some of the commonly requested details on how Magic Mirror Backup works:
- Backups are password protected so that, when a password is specified, others in your office will not be able to read your files (without breaking into your account, which would require a great deal of technical expertise and hacking).
- Backups are only sent to computers you select - your backups will not be sent to computers that you have not authorized.
- You select the files and folders for backup. If you want to limit the size of the backups stored on the computers in your office, you can choose to only backup your "My Documents" and email folders, for instance. If, on the other hand, all the computers have plenty of free space, you can expand the backup to cover less critical files as well.

Shezhu Resource Sharing System 1.18
Shezhu Resource Sharing System is an application for scheduling and booking shared resources. more>>
Shezhu Resource Sharing System project is an application for scheduling and booking shared resources such as rooms and equipment.
The client only needs a modern Web browser.
It has a user friendly point and click interface, visual filters for making block/repeat bookings, concurrent users and double booking prevention, allows local site customization, and supports configurable academic term/semester blocks.
Main features:
- Portable - client only needs a modern web browser
- Point and Click - almost no typing required
- Intuitive - simple, obvious, consistent and user friendly
- Innovative - visual filters for making block/repeat bookings
- Powerful - concurrent users and double booking prevention
- Configurable - local site customization supported
- Useful - built in support for configurable academic term, semester and session blocks
- Free!
Requirements
In order to run or build the Shezhu Resource Sharing System you need some third-party software available on your machine.
Client
The client needs a modern web browser and the best browsers for this application are Firefox, Mozilla (including the Netscape branded equivalent and Gecko derivatives such as Galeon) and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The newest versions of all these browsers will work best. This application also works with the Konqueror and Opera browsers but these have some issues which may affect functionality. All browsers need JavaScript enabled. Any of these browsers may not work properly (or at all) depending on the operating system they are running under. Text based browsers (such as Lynx) are not supported.
For a comprehensive list of supported client browsers and operating systems refer to this browser compatibility chart from the most recent release of the application.
Server
The server needs recent versions of the Apache web server and the MySQL database server.
The server has only been tested on Redhat9 and FedoraCore3 Linux/i386 platforms although there is no specific reason why it should not work on other Linux platforms and distributions.
Development
Rebuilding this application from source requires a standard Unix development environment with the sh, make, cc, cpp, sed and awk utilities. Also required are RCS, Perl (5.6+) and the ImageMagick program. Also required is RPM to build a distribution. All these programs would probably come as standard in Linux distributions, other platforms may not have all of them by default.
Enhancements:
- This release adds support for Apache2 and multi-site installations, internal restructuring, a better installation tree, and improved access control management.
