Open CORBA Benchmarking Suite 1.17

Open CORBA Benchmarking Suite 1.17

Open CORBA Benchmarking Suite is a benchmarking suite for CORBA brokers. more>>
The Open CORBA Benchmarking Suite measures several basic performance aspects of various CORBA brokers.
The suite produces an XML output that can be submitted to a searchable database of broker performance data and browsed in a graphical form. The suite is portable to a number of platforms and brokers.
For C++ brokers
Enter the "C++" directory. Then enter the subdirectory of that directory that corresponds to the broker of your choice. Check the README file there for further instructions, usually you will use "make" to compile the benchmark.
For Java brokers
Enter the "Java" and then the "build" directory. Then enter the subdirectory of that directory that corresponds to the broker of your choice. Check the README file there for further instructions, usually you will use "ant" to compile the benchmark "ant run" to execute the benchmark.
Understanding results
The results do not get printed until the benchmark is finished, which can take from 2 to 4 hours depending on the platform. The best way to view the results is to capture them to a file and view them graphically at http://nenya.ms.mff.cuni.cz/~bench.
Enhancements:
- Support for system information on Linux 2.6 kernels.
- Slight extensions to the documentation.
- Support for some recent brokers on Solaris (VisiBroker 6.0, omniORB 4.0.5, JacORB 2.2.1).
- Support for some recent brokers on Linux (omniORB 4.0.5, JacORB 2.2.1, JDK 1.5.0, TAO 1.4.3).

Open Object Rexx 8.0

Open Object Rexx 8.0

Open Object Rexx is a curses widget set for Tcl. more>>
This is an excellent widget set for Tcl which retains much of the Tk syntax, but uses curses to render the widgets in a character-cell terminal instead of X and a graphical display.

Installation

1. Type "./configure". This runs a configuration script made by GNU autoconf, which configures Ck for your system and creates a Makefile. The configure script allows you to customize the configuration to your local needs; for details how to do this, type "./configure --help" or refer to the autoconf documentation (not included here).

The following special switches are supported by "configure":

--enable-shared If this switch is specified Ck will compile itself as a shared library if configure can figure out how to do this on this platform.

--with-tcl Specifies the directory containing the Tcl binaries and Tcls platform-dependent configuration information. By default the Tcl distribution is assumed to be in "../../tcl8.0".

2. Type "make". This will create a library called "libck.a" or "libck8.0.so" and an interpreter application called "cwsh" that allows you to type Tcl commands interactively or execute scripts.

3. Type "make install" to install Cks binaries, script files, and man pages in standard places. Youll need write permission on the install directories to do this. If you plan to install the libraries, executables, and script files whitout documentation, use "make install-binaries" and "make install-libraries".

4. Now you should be able to execute "cwsh". However, if you havent installed Ck then youll need to set the CK_LIBRARY environment variable to hold the full path name of the "library" subdirectory. If Ck has been built as shared library, you have to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include the directory where "libck8.0.so" resides.

So far, Ck8.0 has been successfully tested on various Linux distributions, on FreeBSD 3.3 with manually adapted Makefile, and on Windows NT 4.0 with a modified PDCURSES library. The Ck8.0 source tree should be able to be combined with Tcl7.4, 7.5, 7.6, and 8.0. Older version of Ck (which use Tcl7.4 or Tcl7.5) are in use for several years on HP-UX, AIX, and DEC Unix.

Open Quartz 2004.08.01

Open Quartz 2004.08.01

Open Quartz is a replacement for the Quake 1 game data under the terms of the GNU General Public License. more>>
So what is Open Quartz? Basically, it is a replacement for the Quake 1 game data under the terms of the GNU General Public License. In addition, GPLed tools are developed to support developers of content for the Quake engine.

On 31 May 1996, id Software released the game Quake, which became a huge success. In 1999, the sourcecode for Quake was released under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Thus peolple could improve the engine and use the engine to create their own games. Soon after the source release, the QuakeForge project was startet to create a cross-platform engine that would appeal to many people.

But having only a GPLed engine but non-free data files was unsatisfiyng so the QuakeForge team also startet Open Quartz.

Though being abandoned for many years, the project is going again thanks to new and devoted developers. But your help is still appreciated, there is a lot to do.

Why is having a free engine and non-free data so unsatisfying? Quake can still be easily aquired from the id Store and a Shareware Version is also available.

Yeah, thats true. Quake is a great game and we encourage everyone to buy it. Combined with up-to-date engines like Darkplaces, QuakeForge and Tenebrae its still a great experience. The reasons why OpenQuartz is developed lie not with the availability of Quake nor is Quake a bad game.

Its just that both a free engine and a free data set result in a lot more options and possibilities for developers and the end-user. Its for example not possible to ship Quake with any free Linux distribution like Debian.

But you can do that with OpenQuartz. Also, when you want to create an own game using one of the advanced Quake engines, you have to recreate everything from scratch. With OpenQuartz, you have a lot of free content already availabe which means a lot less work. Also, creating standalone games from existing Quake Mods is now easily possible thanks to Open Quartz.

Open BEAGLE 3.0.1

Open BEAGLE 3.0.1

Open BEAGLE is an evolutionary computation framework in C++. more>>
Open BEAGLE is a C++ Evolutionary Computation (EC) framework. It provides an high-level software environment to do any kind of EC, with support for tree-based genetic programming, bit string and real-valued genetic algorithms, and evolution strategy.
The Open BEAGLE architecture follows strong principles of object oriented programming, where abstractions are represented by loosely coupled objects and where it is common and easy to reuse code.
Open BEAGLE is designed to provide an EC environment that is generic, user friendly, portable, efficient, robust, elegant and free.
With Open BEAGLE, the user can execute any kind of EC, as far as it fulfills some minimum requirements. The only necessary condition is to have a population of individuals to which a sequence of evolving operations is iteratively applied.
So far, Open BEAGLE supports most mainstream EC flavors such genetic programming, bit string and real-values genetic algorithms, and evolution strategy. It also includes support for advanced EC techniques such multiobjective optimization and co-evolution.
The user can take any of these specialized frameworks and modify them further to create his own specialized flavor of evolutionary algorithms.
Main features:
User Friendliness
- Considerable efforts were deployed to make the use of Open BEAGLE as easy and pleasant as possible. Open BEAGLE possesses several mechanisms that offer a user friendly programming interface. For example, the memory management of dynamically allocated objects is greatly simplified by the use of reference counting and automatic garbage collection. The programming style promoted is high-level and allows rapid prototyping of applications.
Portability
- The Open BEAGLE code is compliant with the C++ ANSI/ISO 3 standard. It requires the Standard Template Library (STL). No specific call in the core libraries are made to the operating system nor to the hardware.
Efficiency
- To insure efficient execution, particular attention was given to optimization of critical code sections. Detailed execution profiles of these sections were done. Also, the fact that Open BEAGLE is written in C++ contributes to its overall good performance.
Robustness
- Many verification and validation statements are embedded into the code to ensure correct operation and to inform the user when there is a problem. Robust mechanisms for periodically saving the current evolution state have also been implemented in order to enable automatic restart of interrupted evolutions.
Elegance
- The interface of Open BEAGLE was developed with care. Great energy was invested in designing a coherent software package that follows good OO and generic programming principles. Moreover, strict programming rules were enforced to make the C++ code easy to read, understand and, eventually, modify. The use of XML as file format is also a central aspect of Open BEAGLE, which provide a common ground for tools development to analyze and generate files, and to integrate the framework with other systems.
Free Sourceness
- The source code of Open BEAGLE is free, available under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Thus, it can be distributed and modified without any fee. (See section copyright for further details.
Enhancements:
- Several fixes to allow compilation on Mac OS X
- Fixes in headers inclusion to allow precompiled headers

Open Project Services 0.2

Open Project Services 0.2

Open Project Services (OPS) is a project collaboration platform, integrating server components such as e-mail, calendaring. more>>
Open Project Services (OPS) is a project collaboration platform, integrating server components such as e-mail, calendaring, timesheets, documents, knowledge, etc. with standards complient clients. Open Project Services consists of a project server and a set of client extensions.
We are building a project collaboration platform. It consists of a project server that integrates with services needed within a project, e.g. e-mail, calendaring, timesheets, documents, knowledge, etc.
The project server is a Webservices hub based on Java (J2EE). The persistence layer for project information is LDAP. We use OpenLDAP now, but others should also be possible. The e-mail backend makes use of a standard IMAP server. Our reference implementation uses Courier.
We are building extensions/plugins for clients, making them OPS-enabled. We support e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird (XUL) and Squirrelmail (PHP) for e-mail clients. For the calendaring and timesheet components we have a Mozilla Sunbird extension (XUL).
In short: we are building a project collaboration environment on an OSS stack, enriching services with project information, using COTS clients/servers and open standards.
Enhancements:
- This release includes some changes to the underlying LDAP schema to make it possible to disable tasks when they are completed.
- To make use of this new feature, the Web services and the sunbird timesheet client have to be updated.

Open 4GL WebServices 0.2 Beta

Open 4GL WebServices 0.2 Beta

Open 4GL WebServices is an opensource project to implement a wizard and a framework. more>>
Open 4GL WebServices is an opensource project to implement a wizard and a framework to make it easy to publish PROGRESS procedures as WebServices generating the WSDL and WS code, without requiring the developer to learn XML or the framework itself.
With this tool the developer can select an existing PROGRESS procedure and produce the WSDL file and/or a proxy procedure that handle the SOAP call and translate between SOAP and PROGRESS datatypes. Open 4GL WebServices also can handle the WS-I security recommendation requiring a custom procedure to authenticate the user/password.
Also, the generated proxy procedure is based on procedure templates (skeletons), these templates allow the developer to choose how to deploy the webservice. The developer can choose between webspeed, a batch version to call it from a CGI, a socket based version, or a custom template, etc.
This kind of project had been there for years, i had read some documents about howto build it, but nobody had been released the complete solution as open source by now. Its an alternative to the commercial version distributed by PROGRESS, only that this version doesnt require Sonic MQ or the AppServer to run properly.
Installation:
Put the entire o4glws directory somewhere in the PROPATH and make a copy the
file o4glws.i in any directory in the PROPATH of the deployment machine, because its needed to compile the deployed webservice adapter procedures.
