BeatriX Linux 2005.1
BeatrIX 2005.1 Linux is a free, compact (Less than 200 megabytes), operating system. more>>
BeatrIX 2005.1 Linux is a free, compact (Less than 200 megabytes), operating system aimed at both office and home users who want something simpler, safer and superior to Microsoft Windows, and that will run on just about any IBM-compatible PC made in the past 10 years.
It runs as a live CD or it can be installed to hard drive. As a live CD, it does not touch your hard drive or touch any other operating system you have.
SImply insert the CD, re-boot, and about two minutes later, youre surfing the Internet, writing letters, sending e-mail and instant-chatting. All this from a CD the size of a beer coaster.
BeatrIX is designed differently than any other system. Yes, its Linux, but it doesnt look like Linux. Or Windows. Or Macintosh. It simply looks like a computer desktop. That desktop has only four icons -- all easily recoginsable by anyone whos used a Windows, Mac or Linux computer in the last decade.
So, anyone can use it with little or no help. It took us a year to release our first version because so much time was devoted to usability and stability.

mod_ocaml 0.01
mod_ocaml is an Apache module for the use of OCAML as a Web scripting language. more>>
Generally, mod_ocaml is a flexible module for use with the famous Apache Web Server. Probably you know how to benefit of other modules with unbelievable capabilities, like PHP (mod_php4) or Perl (mod_perl).
One of the advantages of the Apache Server is the possibility to extend its features by adding modules to your configuration. At this point, mod_ocaml comes up.
mod_ocaml is designed to work with the 1.3 family of Apaches all over the world.
OCAML is derived from the CAML language. We include the description from its home at INRIA here:
Caml is a programming language, easy to learn, easy to use, and yet amazingly powerful.
It is developed and distributed by INRIA (the main French research institute for computer science), since 1984. It is freely available for Unix, PC or Macintosh.
Objective Caml (OCAML) is a general purpose programming language that combines
functional, imperative, and object-oriented programming. The language is statically typed; its type system ensures the correct evaluation of programs.
Types are automatically inferred. The language offers powerful constructions such as user-definable data-types, the ability to define functions by pattern-matching, and an exception mechanism. Programming in the large is facilitated by a full-fledge class-based object-oriented layer and an expressive module system.
Installation
Find your installed apxs, usually in /usr/bin, or /usr/local/apache/bin.
Call apxs -c mod_ocaml.c to compile the module
Copy the created file mod_ocaml.so to your apache libexec directory, e. g. /usr/local/apache/libexec.
Make two entries in your httpd.conf configuration file:
LoadModule mod_ocaml mod_ocaml.so
AddHandler ocaml-parsed .ocml
Restart your apache web server. Now it is ready to process your OCML-files.
Usage
You simply write poor old HTML code and save it under your webserver root. Choose the extension you entered at the "AddHandler" directive in httpd.conf (per default, this is .ocml). So you save a file named, e. g. test.ocml.
Until now, you didnt use any of the mod_ocaml benefits. Try to include OCAML code, and it will be displayed "as is". Since you want your OCAML code to be interpreted and evaluated, you have to inform mod_ocaml of this:
< ?ocml
Printf.printf ("This is generated by the OCAML interpreter.");;
? >
As you can see, the init tag for your OCAML parts is "<<less

alloywm 0.4.0
alloywm is the metallic window manager. more>>
As its name implies, alloywm is a quite exquisite, aesthetic little window manager for X11. The premise of this window manager is not to be over-bloated like better known window managers such as KDE, and to keep the interface out of a users way. Also, alloywm maintains to be small, fast, and have a really small memory footprint.
I first decided to adopt this window manager as a testbed for programming in C for X11, because I was mainly a non-graphical programmer for a long time. It is not very configurable, thusly you would have to edit the sourcecode to add any functionality, to bend it to your likings.
The window manager feels like a Macintosh GUI interface, except that you cannot click inside the window to give focus (that will change, soon.) A new window is drawn wherever the mouse happens to be. So, in other words, if I run an rxvt, and the mouse is in the centre, then the top-left hand corner of the window is in the centre.

FreeType 1.3.1
FreeType is a software font engine that is designed to be small, efficient, highly customizable and portable. more>>
FreeType 1 is a portable and highly efficient TrueType rendering engine, that is now successfully used to bring TrueType support to a very large variety of platforms and environments, be they font servers, graphics libraries or embedded systems.
FreeType 1 is a clean-room implementation that is not derived from the original TrueType engine developed by Apple and Microsoft. It has been created with the sole help of the published TrueType specifications, which to our great surprise (and pain) turned out to be extremely poor and misleading in critical areas. Much hard work has been undertaken to solve ambiguities. The end result is a portable and fast renderer.
Note that FreeType 1 is a library. It is not a font server for your favorite platform, even though it was designed to be used in many of them. Note also that it is not a complete text-rendering library. Its purpose is simply to open and manage font files, as well as load, hint and render individual glyphs efficiently. You can also see it as a "TrueType driver" for a higher-level library, though rendering text with it is easy, as demonstrated by the test programs.
Its quality matches these of Windows and the Macintosh, while its memory foot-print and code size (between 48 and 55 kByte of Intel code) remain modest. A thing that cannot be said for most other commercial engines available.
Main features:
- Supports TrueType files (TTF) and collections (TTC). Doesnt support GX or OpenType fonts, but these can be opened and used as normal TTF files by the library. (With the exception of OTF OpenType fonts which really embed a Type 1 font file within a TrueType storage).
- Modular design: Memory and I/O operations can be very easily tailored to your own platform/system (the standard release comes with ANSI libc support).
- Font smoothing, a.k.a. gray-scaling. Just like Win95, the renderer only smoothes the parts of a glyph which need it (i.e., diagonals and curves).
- Support for all character mappings defined in the TrueType specification. The client application can select whichever pleases it.
- A full-featured and efficient TrueType bytecode interpreter. The engine is able to produce excellent output at small point sizes. This component has been extremely difficult to get right, due to the ambiguous and misleadings TrueType specifications. However, we now match Windows and Mac qualities.
- Written in portable ANSI C (and Pascal, for older FreeType 1 versions). Should compile well on all kinds of systems (tested on 16, 32 and 64 bits processors). With full source code available.
- Open Source License. FreeType can be included in all kinds of commercial systems and software.
- Provides test programs to "show-off" the library, runnable on the following platforms: Dos, Unix, OS/2, Win95, and Amiga. Any porters for other systems are welcome and should contact the developers team.
- Support for extensions. These are separately linkable units which can be used to enhance the engines functionalities without recompiling it. They can be written to access additional TrueType tables, or even GX and/or OpenType ones (the latter is already available).
- Kerning support: The TrueType kerning data is available through one of the standard extensions that comes in this release. However, it is up to the application to "interpret" the data, as many different `formats are supported.
- Support for vertical metrics. The engine is able to provide client applications with vertical glyph metrics if they are found in font files (usually in CJKV fonts). If not present, it synthetizes metrics from the horizontal values, ascender, and descender metrics. This means that it is possible to render vertical text correctly.
- Standard extensions are provided to access and load the glyph names in the Postscript table.

Snoopy vs. the Red Baron 1.0
Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is an open-source one/two player combat game, available for Mac OS X, Linux, BeOS, QNX and Windows. more>>
Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is an open-source one/two player combat game, available for Mac OS X, Linux, BeOS, QNX and Windows.
The original Snoopy was a tiny game for the Apple Macintosh, with black and white graphics, but already almost all the levels of the new Snoopy/SDL were implemented.
Snoopy could be played by two opponents, sharing a single screen and keyboard, and although it had poor graphics and tough controls, we very much liked to play it.
While we learned programming, we constantly sought for simple, yet interesting projects. If you have ever tried to learn a new language or API, you will have recognized that the simplest way in mastering the stuff is simply reprogramming an existing application, without losing much thought on design and originality.
So my friend reprogrammed Snoopy, in Object Pascal, using SAT, the Sprite Animation Toolkit, on his Classic II. That version of Snoopy features a fully functional AI, network play, but only the first level ( weapons drop).
While he was at it, he also implemented a "missing feature", the bombs, for which there where graphics and sounds in the game, but which could not be thrown.
When I discovered SDL, I recognized that it would be ideal for the job. Running on Windows, Linux, MacOS, BeOS and many other platforms, it is my new toolkit of choice for multimedia programming. It took us several weeks to port Snoopy (besides going to school, but now the work is almost done, with only the finishing touches to be made.
I can only encourage everyone to try SDL; it is really easy and portable (if worked right).

Polidori 0.1-3
Polidori is a DVD Authoring System for Gnome and Linux. more>>
Polidori is a DVD Authoring System for Gnome and Linux.
Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel in several areas, it instead integrates several excellent tools like dvdauthor, dvdrtools, ogle, etc., already available for Linux, and bundled with most distributions.
At this time, there are no visual DVD authoring tools available for Linux, compared to the vast amount of similar tools available on Windows and Macintosh. The pieces are all available in Linux, they just need to be integrated into something easier to use.
Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel, Polidori will integrate several command-line tools available for Linux into a project-based workflow.
Main features:
- a Gnome-compliant GUI for creating projects
- visual development of navigation menus, sub-titles, backgrouunds, etc.
- integration with Kino for video editing and SMIL data for chapter/scene data
- integration with Ogle for ISO image preview before burning to media
- importing of images for backgrounds
- support for layered images created with the Gimp.
- creation of DVD ISO disk images
- writing disk images to media (DVD-R, DLT, etc)
Polidori is named after Dr. John Polidori, a writer of early 19th Century Gothic fiction. Many scholars feel that Dr. Polidori created the genre of vampire fiction with his short story The Vampyre (1819). This story marks the first time a vampire is portrayed as an aristocratic and romantic character, as seen in later vampire characters like Count Dracula and Lestat de Lioncourt. Why name a software application after this author?
Because the name sounded cool and distinctive.

XDaliClock 2.23
XDaliClock is a digital clock for Mac OS X, the X Window System, and PalmOS devices. more>>
XDaliClock is a digital clock for Mac OS X, the X Window System, and PalmOS devices. When a digit changes, it "melts" into its new shape with color-cycling.
Dali Clock is a digital clock. When a digit changes, it "melts" into its new shape. The date is displayed when the mouse is pressed. The window can be made transparent, and can do funky psychedelic color cycling.
It is available for X11, MacOS X, and PalmOS. There is no Windows version, so dont ask.
It can display in 12 or 24 hour modes, and displays the date when a mouse button is held down. It has two large fonts built into it, but it can animate most other fonts that contain all of the digits. It can also do some funky psychedelic colormap cycling, and can use overlay planes or the `shape extension so that the window is transparent.
In the default configuration, this program is very network-intensive. If it seems sluggish, try the "-memory high" option (see the man page). It will take a little longer to start up, but will then go easy on the bandwidth.
This program was inspired by the Alto/Macintosh programs of the same name, written by Steve Capps some time in the early eighties. This implementation is mine, and if youre looking for another reason to hate the X Windows ``feature of network-transparent graphics, well here you go.
Enhancements:
- The OS X version has a prettier preferences panel
- The PalmOS version has smoother morphing, a bigger "seconds only" font, and does color cycling on color devices.
- The X11 version has smoother morphing, better color-cycling contrast, and three more (larger) built-in fonts.

Sequence Analysis 1.6.0
Sequence Analysis project is a collage of coding projects. more>>
Sequence Analysis project is a collage of coding projects which I have written over the past several years for various clients in my work as a bioinformatics consultant.
These clients have graciously allowed me to release these works into the public domain as freeware for Macintosh OS X in order to promote the platform and to encourage migration from Classic.
The upper window panel can hold several sequences, which are both editable and selectable. The tabs in the lower analysis panel try to keep up with the current sequence selection to provide immediate feedback. The selection is used in some modules as only the portion being analyzed for other modules i.e. Digest is used to determine if enzymes cut in the in or outside of the selection.
Most commonly available sequence formats have been reverse engineered. You can also access a sequences from the NCBI via its GID or UID. This currently cannot be done from behind a firewall.
Most of the analyses are simple enough that they are obvious to use, Composition, pI. Others could stand some documenation i.e. Pairwise and Primer Design. The Publish tab uses a string to control the layout. Click on the Legend button for some help.

GalaxyMage 0.3.0
GalaxyMage is a free, open-source tactical/strategic RPG for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh. more>>
GalaxyMage is a free, open-source tactical/strategic RPG for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh.
The tipical RPG game system is a type of role-playing game where turn-based battles are fought on a 3D map. Examples of commercial tactical RPGs include Final Fantasy Tactics, Vandal Hearts, and Disgaea: Hour of Darkness.
Our goal is to make GalaxyMage a game that is relatively simple to pick up and play -- you can dive right in without getting bogged down in the details of the battle mechanics -- but to also allow for a lot of character development and customization.
We also intend to create a unique, advanced AI system that allows enemy units to work together as a team and employ a wide variety of strategies. And eventually, we plan on adding networked multiplayer support.

Photo Directory 0.7.6 Beta
PhotoDirectory project is a cross platform (Java) application to organize digital images. more>>
PhotoDirectory project is a cross platform (Java) application to organize digital images. Great effort has been given to keeping these pictures in an order accessible without the need for any organization software - no databases are required.
PhotoDirectory was written using Java version 1.5 (commonly called 5.0 for some reason or another). You cannot run it on anything less than this. Depending on your system, you may need to explicitly state which Java VM to use. If you use Macintosh OS X, I include an application package that does everything for you. If you dont use OS X, now is a great time to try.
Main features:
- Multithreaded IO intensive operations
- Functional menus (Import, Move, etc)
- Quick Searching for pictures within the library
- Details view with zoom
- Edit images in external application (currently just for OS X - uses /Applications/GraphicConverter, but soon will be a user configurable option)
